Approximately 150 proud, smiling faces filled the Brookhaven Town Hall auditorium on Friday, May 6th, for the 36th Annual Brookhaven Youth Volunteer Awards.

The awards recognize volunteers from each council district who work with and assist young people, whether they are individual adults, service

groups, or young people themselves. The event was organized by the Brookhaven Youth Board and Brookhaven Youth Bureau. The Youth Board serves as an advisory board to the Youth Bureau.

The Youth Bureau is responsible for planning and coordinating activities and services for young people up to 21 years

of age. It also monitors and provides oversight for youth agencies and programs that receive funding from Brookhaven Town.

Volunteers Honored

Rocky Point High School Student Council together with the Be a Nicer Neighbor club cosponsored the annual Senior Citizen Prom for area residents this spring.

More than 200 guests were invited from the

Rocky Point and Sound Beach community and surrounding areas. The event has been an annual Rocky Point tradition for many years, and Rocky Point students always enjoy intermingling with the community’s senior

citizens.

During the event, the students served a sit-down dinner to all of the guests and attendees had the chance to gamble for candy in the casino and dance the afternoon away.

Heart Ball a Success

Hundreds of attendees from the Long Island medical and corporate community came out to Oheka Castle in Huntington on Thursday, May 5th, to attend the American Heart Association’s 53rd Annual Long Island Heart Ball. The Long Island Heart Ball is an annual social event held to recognize outstanding accomplishments of individuals and companies in the area of cardiovascular science and leadership.

Special Delivery By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Several weeks ago, shortly after the passing of my “Pal,” my Grandpa, we discovered what appeared to be a small bird’s nest nestled under the awning in the backyard. Assuming it was just a collection of twigsin-progress, I gingerly climbed on top of a chair to peek inside, only to find three beautiful blue eggs, clearly from the likes of a robin.

No one was certain how long it had been there, though obviously enough time for the mama bird to lay these eggs.

Not wanting to disturb the carefully orchestrated set-up, we left everything as it was and waited – from a safe distance – to see if the mother would return.

Well, return she did and, within a few days, a fourth egg appeared in the nest, as she guarded her stash, fleeing only briefly upon any human sightings.

Now, you may be wondering, what’s the big deal? It’s spring, ‘tis the season for the birds and the bees and all of nature to frolic and procreate. While this is true, it must be noted that, in the 55 years my grandparents resided in this house, there were most likely exactly zero nests successful built by any birds.

This was due to the fact that my Grandpa, lovable as he was, did not care for the messy remnants of twigs and leaves that the birds tended to leave while in the “construction” stage of things. At the first sign of a nest-in-progress, out would come the broom, sweeping all of their hard work away in one fell swoop.

But now, here they were – four, tiny, perfect Easter-looking eggs, ready to hatch at any moment with brand new life.

We kept a watchful eye on them for weeks, until one day, out popped a baby, all pink and naked, flopped on the other three eggs, which were now

showing signs of beginning to crack as well. A few days later, four fuzzy little hatchlings resided in the nest, napping in a pile of soft, pulsating fur, eyes not quite open, occasionally opening their beaks in case food happened to be lurking nearby.

As of this writing, the four are still happily cohabitating, the fuzz gradually beginning to be filled in with soft gray feathers, the eyes fully open and alert, the beaks ready and waiting for mama’s next meal delivery.

According to most references, it may be as little as a week before these little chicks are ready to fly off on their own.

And such is the circle of life…

How wonderful to be able to witness it right in Grandma and Grandpa’s backyard, especially at this time. There are those who believe in signs – for those, I don’t think you could ask for a clearer indication that this special delivery was intended just for us, right here, right now.

In commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the construction of Stony Brook Village, the Ward Melville Heritage Organization will host a special exhibit from May 21st through September 7th at their Educational & Cultural Center offering a display of memorabilia spanning seven decades.

Visitors are sure to enjoy this walk through history as they experience the story told through original blueprints and documents, photos, sketches, memorabilia, letters penned by Ward Melville and much more. Shops will also have historic photos on display in their

windows of what their store looked like “back in the day.” Completed in 1941, Stony Brook Village is recognized as the first planned business center in the United States. It is the product of Ward Melville’s vision for a “living Williamsburg,” a place where history and culture would blend with natural beauty as a part of everyday life.

This “walking” Village is visited by thousands for its special charm and beauty, 30 specialty shops and seven restaurants, year round events and exhibits and a cultural center that hosts musical theatre and education programs.

It is also home to the impressive “mechanical eagle” atop the Stony Brook Post Office, which still flaps its wings today every hour on the hour from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Sponsored by Suffolk Federal, the exhibit will be open May 21st to June 19th; Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. then June 20th through September 7th it will be open 7 days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will be closed Memorial Day and July 4th. Butterfly Garden Rocky Point Middle School’s eighth-grade science research class helped to create a butterfly garden in the building’s courtyard for retiring math and science teacher Anne Kalinowski.

The class, which is taught my Jennifer Madigan, learned about the lifecycle of butterflies, their habitats and diets

before working to hatch several for the garden. In the coming weeks, they plan to plant milkweed and parsley, because those are believed to foster butterfly development and growth.

Ms. Madigan, who was taught chemistry by Ms. Kalinowski when she was in 11th grade, was inspired to introduce the project to the class as both

a character building and educational experience.

“As a teacher and colleague, Ms. Kalinowski taught me about butterflies and I thought this would be a beautiful tribute to commemorate the service of an outstanding and dedicated teacher,” said Ms. Madigan.

Leading the Way Ward Melville High School seniors Jeffrey Michel and Ariel Leong have been named the Class of 2016 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.

At Ward Melville, both students regularly shine in the classroom as dedicated scholars and are active members of the school community.

Jeffrey is the swim

captain for Ward Melville’s swimming and diving team and is a member of the National Honor Society and National German Honor Society as well as president of the Model U.N. team. He also plays trumpet in the school’s wind ensemble.

Ariel is a member of the school’s awardwinning Science Olympiad

team, math team and environmental club. She plays on the building’s tennis team and plays violin in the school’s chamber orchestra.

Jeffrey will be studying engineering and German at Rice University and Ariel will be attending Stanford University.

Inventive Crafts On Saturday, May 7th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined the Mount Sinai Volunteer Fire Department at their annual installation dinner at Majestic Gardens in Rocky Point. Firefighters were given service recognition awards for the many years they have dedicated to protecting and ensuring the safety of the Mount Sinai Community.

Recognition awards were given to the following: Stephen Kennedy and Vincent Tambone for 20 years of service; Nicholas Casamassa for 25 years of service; Stephen Applebaum, Daniel Desmond, Gerard Marino, and Christopher Venezia for 30 years of service; James Stravino for 35 years; William Cassenaar

and James Trappen for 40 years of service; Elliot Perry for 45 years; and Ed Florsz for 60 years of service.

In addition, Andrew Samour was awarded a proclamation from Legislator Anker for his skills and bravery that saved a fellow firefighter while he was on duty as an air traffic control specialist.

“I would like to extend a warm thank you to the Mount Sinai Fire Department volunteers.

Their tireless efforts and dedication to the community provides a sense of safety and security that we can all appreciate,” said Legislator Anker.

Along with the firefighters that received service recognition awards, Legislator Anker had the

W.S. Mount Elementary School third-grade students put their creativity to the test when they invented a variety of projects using recycled materials.

From paper towel rolls, plastic water bottles, discarded wood and a

slew of other materials, the students created such projects as a floatation device, birdhouse, desk organizer and even a knock hockey board.

The classes proudly displayed their completed projects in a hallway museum and embarked on

a recycled scavenger hunt.

During the hunt, they located projects based on the materials used and described which craft was their favorite and the supplies used to create the piece.

Drug-Free Forum The auditorium at Rocky Point High School was standing-room only during the district’s spring “Drug Free” community forum, an event that supported the schools’ ongoing, pro-active approach to integrating health and substance abuse programs into the K-12 curriculum.

Shocking statistics, including that over the course of the two-hour forum 10 people in the nation will have died of a drug overdose, opened the agenda and immediately captivated the audience.

Keynote speaker John Venza, the vice president of adolescent services OUTREACH, provided an eye-opening presentation about drug use across Long

Island, signs to watch for, where to get help and so much more. Following his comprehensive overview, the audience heard the results of a recent youth development survey taken by Rocky Point students and how those self-reported answers compared to responses nationwide. Additionally, Hope House Overdose Prevention’s board certified psychiatrist Dr. Jennifer Serrentino spoke about the importance of Narcan training.

“This is a war that we are fighting and we are in the trenches as parents, educators and members of the community,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael F. Ring.

“This is a battle that isn’t necessarily in the streets as many think it is…it is in your living room, the rec room in your basement or your child’s bedroom.”

Dr. Ring encouraged parents to be vigilant in their efforts and urged each to take home the drug testing kits provided by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department.

To further support the evening’s message, several groups were on hand in the high school lobby. Displays featured information from such places as Alcoholics Anonymous, North Shore Youth Council and the Suffolk County Prevention Resource Center.

Zoning In As a result of displaying outstanding leadership and character in physical education classes, three Port Jefferson Middle School eighth-graders were recognized with awards from the Suffolk Zone of the New York Association for Health, Physical Education,

Recreation and Dance.

The Port Jefferson students, Michael Brown, Farrell Johnston and Aiden Kaminska, earned their awards based upon recommendations from their physical education teachers.

“These students have proven themselves with

exceptional physical performance, scholastic ability and leadership qualities,” said Edward Cinelli, interim director of physical education, health & athletics. “They are each well-deserving of this recognition.”

DRUG-FREE FORUM - Members of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office were on hand to speak with community members during the Rocky Point School District “Drug Free” Community Forum.

To educate fourth- and fifth-graders about a variety of career paths, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School held its second annual Career Day

on May 6th.

During the event, organized by teachers Paige Lohmann and Kristi Krieg, 14 community volunteers spoke to the students

about their professions.

Careers represented included those related to education, medicine, law enforcement, science and carpentry.

Business Wise award along with his three Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology teammates for a business plan they created for a mock restaurant, called Melted.

Camoglino, who has been studying culinary arts at the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology since his junior year, plans to attend Johnson & Wales University in the fall. He intends to major in human resource management.

Special Recognition Good Shepherd Hospice, a member of Catholic Health Services, has been recognized by the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) for its vigil volunteer program, which offers an innovative approach to caring for the dying.

Vigil volunteers, dubbed Compassionate Shepherds, are specially trained to comfort the dying at Good Shepherd’s inpatient center in Port Jefferson.

This program enables family members and friends to leave the bedside for a respite, knowing their loved ones are not alone.

“The feedback we’ve received since the program began three years ago has been extremely positive,” said Chief Administrative Officer Mary Ellen Polit.

“Our Compassionate Shepherds have added another level of support that Good Shepherd is able to provide to dying

people and their families and allows us to fulfill and extend our mission of compassionate care.”

The recognition from HANYS is part of its “NYS Triple Aim” campaign, which focuses on how New York hospitals and health systems are finding new ways to improve population health, enhance the quality of patient care and reduce the cost of health care, despite fiscal restraints.

For the Bugs Setauket Elementary School first-graders in Eileen Biamonte recently took to the stage to perform the comical show “Goin’ Buggy.”

During the show, each student took on the role of a different insect or bug

and implored the audience to understand why they were underappreciated in the world. Ladybugs, bumblebees and lightning bugs joined forces and marched to Washington, D.C. to fight for their rights. The show ended

with insects earning a holiday in their name.

The student’s participation in the performance enabled them to gain a deeper understanding of civil rights and strengthen their public speaking skills.

Table of Learning As part of a chemistry unit of study, Setauket Elementary School sixthgraders had the chance to closely study the 118 elements found on the Periodic Table of Elements.

During the project, each student selected a different element and completed a

fact sheet on the item. They took note of the element’s atomic number, atomic weight and the number of protons, electrons and neutrons as well as its valance shell. The completed information sheets were placed on display in the shape of the

periodic table in the sixthgrade hallway.

In addition, each student created a 3-D model of the element they had studied.

As a fitting tribute to the school that will soon become their alma mater, Setauket Elementary School sixth-graders lent their artistic talents to create a large mural in one of the hallways of the building.

With the help of art teacher Maria Maritato and visiting artist and

retired Three Village art teacher Frank Marangiello, the grade level created a mural based on Vincent van Gogh’s famous painting “Starry Night.”

For their piece, which was called “Starry Night, the Mural Awakens,” the students added personal touches to the original, including incorporating

hidden characters from the Star Wars franchises in camouflaged locations.

The sixth-grade mural project has become a tradition at the school and annually every sixthgrader has the chance to paint a part of the artistic creation.
