Comsewogue Spanish Honor Society Gives Back To The Community
The Comsewogue High School Spanish Honor Society members recently gave back to their community by donating 105 Progresso Soup Toppers to Pax Christi Hospitality Center in Port Jefferson. The members, under the guidance of Advisor Patricia Trypaluk, have been collecting, bagging and transporting soup and crackers to the Pax Christi Hospitality
Center for three years. Each year, they have exceeded their annual goal of collecting 100 soup toppers. Through their efforts, they have helped feed over 300 people. The Pax Christi Hospitality Center provides shelter, food, counseling, advocacy, and networking services to members of the community.

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization, which encompasses New York State’s Nassau, Su olk, Queens, and Kings (Brooklyn) Counties, was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. LIMEHOF, located in Stony Brook, is heavily engrossed in our local communities and o ers Long Islanders many ways to get involved.
As like any non-profit, their volunteers play a large role in their e orts. Each and every person who gives their time as a volunteer is dedicated to help support their mission. If you have a passion for music and would like to volunteer, please visit www. limusichallo ame.org/volunteer and fill out an application form.
Additionally, donations of any size are accepted and appreciated. Your donation will help preserve our rich musical heritage and assist in providing music education programs for children and adults, including scholarships to deserving high school students. Specific donation amounts will allow you to get your name/ information in their Hall of Fame, engraved on either a Quarter Note ($250), Half Note ($500) or Whole Note ($1000).
The Hall of Fame is now accepting applications for their 2023 Student Scholarship program, where they will award $500 scholarships to graduating students. These scholarships will provide funding for eligible graduating high school students from Nassau, Su olk, Brooklyn, Queens, or Kings (Brooklyn) Counties who have shown an interest in pursuing a career in music.

Senator Mattera And Long Island Cares
New York State Senator Mario R. Mattera (2nd Senate District) is proud to join with Long Island Cares to help protect pets throughout our region. To assist the organization’s 12th Annual Legislative Pet Food Drive Challenge, Senator Mattera’s district office will serve as a collection point for pet supplies to help the charity restock Baxter’s Pet Pantry to help ensure that Long Island families in need
are able to care for their pets.
Long Island Cares, in partnership with the Animal Relief Fund Inc. (ARF), created Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 to help pet-owning families throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties get the supplies they need. In addition to providing pet food, the Pet Pantry offers toys, pet clothes and other pet necessities. From now until Wednesday, May 31st,
Senator Mattera’s Office will be collecting pet supplies for cats, hamsters, dogs, fish, birds, ferrets and others.
To make it convenient, a donation box will be at Senator Mattera’s District Office located at 180 East Main Street, Suite 210, Smithtown, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Long Island Cares has stated that its most needed

Jerry Corbett Nominated For Suffolk County Champion Of Diversity Award
Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker recognized Jerry Corbett as her first annual nominee for the Suffolk County Champion of Diversity Award. As established by Resolution 844-22, designating April as “Champions of Diversity Month” in Suffolk County to recognize individuals who exhibit excellence in demonstrating the appreciation of diversity, inclusion, and cultural competence in our communities.
“It was an honor to nominate Jerry Corbett for the Champion of Diversity Award in recognition of his ability to overcome adversity after experiencing a life changing disability,
becoming blind due to Giant Cell Arteritis,” said Legislator Anker. “Jerry is an inspiration in our community.”
Jerry was very active before he lost his sight. He was a member of the singing group Happy Wanderers that performed in Leisure Village and nursing homes in the area. Jerry was a long-time member of the Art Group, Wet Paints. Jerry and his wife enjoyed going to plays, exploring Long Island, and filling their golden years with all the possibilities offered to them.
In August of 2022, he was diagnosed with the disease called GCA (Giant Cell Arteritis), which rendered him completely
blind within one week.
“I am adjusting to my loss of sight by having a positive attitude. I thank God that this happened when I was 78 yrs. old, and not before,” Jerry says. “I am able to remember what nature looks like. I know my friends faces and my wife’s - she is my Rock. I remember the faces of my children and grandchildren from their whole lives.”
Jerry is dedicated to taking every opportunity to help community members who have similar experiences.

Comsewogue School District Rallies Behind A Student Battling Cancer
The Comsewogue School District celebrated a St. Baldrick’s Day this year that was more personal than ever. Staff and students raised over $10,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation through a Disrict-wide fundraiser at JFK Middle School dedicated to Tenzin Tanaka, an 8-year old Terryville Road Elementary School student who was
diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic (T-ALL) leukemia in June 2022. The fundraiser was one of several the District dedicated to Tenzin to support him and his family through his battle with cancer.
“When we heard about what Tenzin and his family has been going through, we wanted to do anything we could to help and
support them through this difficult time,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Quinn. “Tenzin is a beam of sunshine and such a strong fighter who embodies what it means to be a warrior. We are so proud of him and everyone in the community working to support the Tanaka family.”
Students participated in the St. Baldrick’s Day
celebration by setting a fundraising goal and pledging to shave their heads if they reached it. JFK Middle School Assistant Principal James Hilbert also participated and had his head shaved by student Declan McQuire, who collected over $2,200.
The St. Baldrick’s Day fundraiser aimed to raise awareness and funds for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a nonprofit at the forefront of fighting childhood cancer that has been a major resource for Tenzin and his family.
Tenzin, his brother Paxton and his mother Colleen joined the Comsewogue School
District this September. Tenzin is currently undergoing chemotherapy, which he will be receiving until October 2024. His mother Colleen is a single parent who had to leave her job after Tenzin’s diagnosis to take care of him.
The St. Baldrick’s Day fundraiser was one of the many ways the community has come together to support Tenzin and his family. Two days after the fundraiser, the District held a successful blood drive in partnership with Stony Brook University and dedicated it to Tenzin and all children fighting cancer. The Terryville Road Elementary School
PTA also hosted a comedy fundraiser dedicated to Tenzin at the Moose Lodge in Mount Sinai. The event, for adults only, featured four comedians and included raffle baskets, a 50/50 raffle, food and a cash bar.
Tenzin’s favorite superhero is The Flash, who, Tenzin explains, is not only known for having super speed abilities, but is also capable of super healing. The District captured that sentiment in “Tenzin’s Fan Club” t-shirts and bracelets they are selling imprinted with “Team Tenzin” and The Flash’s signature lightning bolt.

Board Honors Winter Athletes, Physical Education And Health Staff
At a recent meeting of the Three Village Central School District Board of Education, several winter season student-athletes were honored for their respective post-season awards and achievements. Athletes representing the
cheerleading team, boys swimming, girls basketball, girls fencing, boys track and wrestling were all recognized by the board, central administration and Director of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics Kevin Finnerty.
Mr. Finnerty then introduced Minnesauke Elementary School physical education teachers Alaina Maletta and Jillian Damis for leading the building’s efforts in the American Heart Association’s Kids Heart
Challenge. Minnesauke Elementary School raised $20,285, making it one of the top fundraising schools on Long Island and in New York. Throughout fundraising, students were engaged in learning about heart healthy habits.
The final recognition of the evening acknowledged Minnesauke Elementary School health teacher Kerry Diana and Nassakeag Elementary School physical education teacher
Jeanne LaLima. Ms. Diana was named the Elementary
Health Teacher of the Year by the Suffolk Zone of the NY State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance whereas Ms. LaLima was named the Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year.
