Winning Essay P.J. Gelinas Junior High School eighthgrade student Joshua George was awarded honorable mention for his submission to the DuPont Challenge science Essay Competition.

Considered by many to be the nation’s premier scientific essay competition, The DuPont Challenge Essay has over 10,000 student applicants annually from all 50 states.

All of the students enrolled in the Earth SMART classes

at Gelinas submitted essays to this science competition in fulfillment of a course requirement. Josh was one of only 20 students selected out of the thousands of applicants from the Junior Division for the Honorable Mention status and will receive a $200 US savings bond.

For his essay, Humidity Save Lives, Josh described how water vapor in the air could potentially be a source of drinking water for areas of the world that

are facing shortages. In his paper, he described a machine that would run off of solar power and collect the water from the atmosphere where it wasn’t present on the ground (essentially a solar powered dehumidifier and filter).

His writing displayed a high level of understanding of the problem parts of our planet face with regards to water supply (today and in the future), as well as a unique solution that may be feasible in certain areas.

Olympiad Winners

After competing against schools across 11 regions at the New York State Science Olympiad competition on April 17th and 18th, Port Jefferson Middle School’s team returned home with two top ten medals and ranking 18th overall.

“The students worked

hard and learned scientific concepts on a high school and college level. Everyone enjoyed being in Syracuse and we hope to return next year and build upon our team’s successes,” said coach Adam Bouchard.

Open Rehearsal As part of the Port Jefferson School District’s partnership with Stony Brook University’s Staller Center, student musicians and their families had the opportunity to attend the Emerson String quartet’s open rehearsal on April 14th.

During the rehearsal,

the critically acclaimed quartet interacted with the music students while they practiced two pieces - Lowell Liebermann’s String Quartet No. 5 and Shostakovich Op. 108 No. 7 - prior to their last concert hosted at the Staller Center.

The golden sun shining on my face, the breeze gently blowing across my face like a tornado.

I take a sip of sweet ice tea.

Dogs barking, birds chirping all day.

Children running faster than cheetahs.

Bikes on roads, children playing basketball on the street.

Kid yelling, “Whoooooh, no more cold!”

No more jackets, no more boots, now it’s time for shorts.

The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School chapter of the Tri-M Music Society inducted six new members at its eighth annual honors recital and induction ceremony on April 15th.

Inducted were musicians Shannon Christ, Rachel Collins, Parris Garant, Danielle Goldstein, Tammy Serabian and Marianna Spentzos. Membership to the Tri-M Music Society

was based on five points of distinction: scholarship, character, cooperation, leadership and service.

“A Tri-M Member is one who sets a good example, is always willing to assist those students who are striving to better themselves in the music department and is always one who remembers that it is a real honor to carry these responsibilities,” said Tri-M advisor Christine

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Students and staff members throughout the Three Village Central School District marked this year’s Earth Day by participating in a variety of hands-on activities centered on the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling materials.

Minnesauke Elementary School kindergarten students in Cassie Sheridan’s and Allison Babb’s classed helped upcycled milk cartons to

create planters for small seeds. The students painted cartons discarded in the cafeteria and used the colorful creations to plant seeds of their choosing.

Each student received a plant journal to track their plant’s growth and will share their documented findings with their classmates each week.

Keeping with the school’s tradition, Nassakeag Elementary School’s student council members participated

in the building’s annual Earth Day Clean Up and sixth-graders in Robyn Weinstein’s class coordinated a Waste Free Lunch Week. During the clean up, the students worked to remove any debris located on the school’s grounds and planted two trees in the building’s courtyard that were donated by the PTA and head custodian John Moran.

Data, facts and key information about the Elizabethan Era were on display in a visual manner when Rocky Point High School ninthgrade English students in Christine Blume’s class participated in an interactive student gallery project.

Using information they gathered from such online resources as NoodleTools, a platform promoting authentic research and original writing, the students generated infographics on the Elizabethan Era. Working individually or collaboratively, they selected a topic, formulated an essential

research question and worked to gather reliable, reputable and sufficient sources to support their question. Their findings were organized into a comprehensive outline, sourced on MLA works cited pages and then used to create the graphical representation of their research. Topics included “The Social Impact of the Black Plague on the Elizabethan Family” and “Shakespeare’s Globe Theater.”

In order to enhance the students’ understanding of all topics covered, they had the chance to view and talk with peers about their research during an in-class gallery walk. They each

I’m sorry, this seat is taken. We’ve all done it. In a crowded movie theatre, a packed-to-capacity train… sometimes, our desire for personal space wins out over common courtesy. I’m not proud of it, but, well, I’m not entirely ashamed of it either.

Case in point: Just last week, my cousin and I ventured out to one of several opening night screenings of The Avengers, Marvel’s latest in a long line of comic-inspired blockbusters.

Like most others in attendance, we arrived at the theatre a full 45 minutes before show time in order to avoid sitting in the front row, straining to

see the top of the screen.

After scoring two relatively centered seats in the last row, I strategically placed my jacket and pocketbook on the neighboring chair. Fortyfive minutes elapsed. The theatre filled in quickly, but there were still plenty of other options aside from the one single seat I had “saved.”

About 20 minutes into the previews, there it was – two stragglers wandered in, loudly discussing where to sit, with one pointing out several suitable options as the other continued to climb up to the last row, our row.

“Is that seat taken?” the one, more irritating individual bellowed, while literally standing in front of

me, I might add. I glanced at my jacket and pocketbook, briefly considered moving it aside, then decided against it. “No, sorry, someone is coming,” I replied blandly.

Even later than you, if that’s possible, I mentally added.

He looked at me doubtfully, then did an about face and headed back to another seat further down the aisle.

I glanced at my cousin and whispered, “So much for that theory – now he’s going to see no one’s coming. Whoops. Perhaps if he didn’t arrive after the opening credits…”

And with that, I settled back into my seat with my popcorn, my personal space preserved.

Obnoxious? Sure.

Worth it? You bet.

New Start Time For Air Show For the first time, the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, one of New York State’s largest public events, will take place starting at 12 noon and run until 5 p.m. – a new time for the show, which traditionally ran from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for the best parking opportunities.

The Bethpage Air show at Jones Beach takes place on Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday, May 23rd and Sunday, May 24th. The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, which will be headlining this year’s show, will be the final act and make their appearance in the sky above Jones Beach at approximately 4:00 p.m.

This will be the legendary demonstration squadron’s fourth appearance at the show, having last headlined the show in 2009. Their performance

will include approximately 40 maneuvers, featuring formation flying and solo routines.

The show will also feature veteran Bethpage Air Show performers including the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, , Sean D. Tucker – Team Oracle, Lt. Col. John Klatt – Air National Guard, the John Klatt Airshows – Screamin’ Sasquatch Jet Waco Aerobatic Team, GEICO Skytypers, Miss GEICO Speedboat, American Airpower Warbirds, and David Windmiller.

New to the show this year is the Breitling Jet Team, the world’s largest professional civilian flight team performing on jets. With its fast and powerful aircraft piloted by “flying aces,” this unique aerobatics team performs a meticulously coordinated ballet, sometimes flying

within 3 meters of each other at speeds of over 435 miles per hour.

The Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach is free of charge, but a standard $10 vehicle use fee will be collected. Bethpage Air Show announcers and Air Boss Wayne Boggs will lead air show activities from the Jones Beach State Park Central Mall Boardwalk area where food, beverages and ground activities will be available for fans.

Stamping Out Hunger Saturday, May 9th, marks the 23rd anniversary of America’s largestsingle day of giving - the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive in Partnership with the U.S. Postal Service, Feeding America, United Way and other partners.

Currently, 49 million Americans - 1 in 6 - are unsure where their next meal is coming from. Sixteen million are children who feel hunger’s impact on their overall health and ability to perform in school. And nearly 5 million seniors over age 60 are food insecure, with many who live on fixed incomes often too embarrassed to ask for help.

In 2014, over 72 million pounds of food was collected by Postal carriers nationally, feeding an estimated 30 million people. Over the course of the 22-year history, the

Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has collected well over one billion pounds of food.

The food drive’s timing is crucial. Food banks and pantries often receive the majority of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. By springtime, many pantries are depleted, entering the summer low on supplies at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs are not available to children in need.

How The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Works Just leave a nonperishable food donation in a bag by the mailbox on Saturday, May 9th, and the Postal carrier will do the rest. It’s that simple and millions of Americans will be helped.

Summer Scholarship Program This summer, high school and college students can win a scholarship by hosting an American Red Cross blood drive through the Leaders Save Lives program.

Registration is now open to host a participating blood drive between June 1st and August 31st, 2015.

The Leaders Save Lives program encourages community-minded 16- to 24 year-olds to host blood drives to help maintain the blood supply over the summer months. Students who participate as a

blood drive coordinator are eligible to win a scholarship up to $2,500 for higher education and to earn a gift card.

“The Leaders Save Lives program is a great way for students to learn valuable leadership skills while helping hospital patients in need of lifesaving blood transfusions,” said Red Cross spokesperson, Stefanie Arcangelo.

“Summer can be a challenging time to maintain a sufficient blood supply. With this program, students are helping the

community by recruiting their friends and family to donate during this crucial season.”

A total of 10 scholarships will be awarded via drawing to students who achieve 100 percent of their blood drive collections goal.
