.S. Mount Elementary School third-grade students in Robert Rotunno’s class turned a simple writing exercise into a creative awareness project for a cause near and dear to at least one classmate’s heart – ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The writing project called for the students to explain what they would do with $100, and several noted they would gift it to charity. The class then moved to turn the creative writing initiative into reality.

Pre-College Programs fields, many professionals cannot reach their highest levels of performance.

The Art League aims to put the STEAM in these programs by developing and encouraging Artistic skill.

With Art Education Program Director Elizabeth Kisseleff’s arrival at the Art League from Pratt Institute in early 2015, under her direction the Architecture and Fashion Programs were fully designed and developed to serve the needs of the Long Island Community. With her extensive experience in Pre-College programs Kisseleff understood the need for not only a high quality program in Architecture and Fashion, but the added need for proximity and affordability for Long Island residents.

On Long Island there are no summer architectural programs for high school students and few options for fashion students.

The Art League’s programs offer certificates of completion for students who attend the threeweek program of their choice, totaling 60 contact hours. The Art League’s Pre-College Program is comparable to the amount of instructional time spent at colleges and universities in New York City and outside of New York but at a much lower price when factoring in tuition and commute. Imagine getting a first-class summer design intensive so close to home you can almost see it from

your own backyard!

Architecture and Fashion programs run July 11th through July 28th. In addition to the two Design Programs, the Pre-College program also offers the Art League’s well-established Portfolio Development running in two three-week sessions starting July 11th and August 1st respectively.

A public exhibit featuring works by students in the Pre-College programs will take place in the League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery August 13th to August 21st.

Scholarships have been made possible by small business and corporate partnerships, private donations and Art League supporters. Scholarships will be awarded based on financial need or merit.

The deadline to submit the scholarship application is May 16th.

The Art League of Long Island is a not-for-profit visual arts organization providing a full schedule of classes, workshops, exhibits, and events for Long Islanders since 1955.

Run for Hope 5K Hope For Youth is hosting its Annual Run For Hope 5K in Heckscher State Park on May 14th beginning at 9 a.m.

Proceeds from the run support Hope For Youth’s mission of facilitating positive change in youth and families on Long Island through residential, out-patient and preventive services.

Last year, the event was attended by over 200 participants who walked, jogged, and ran to help bring awareness to the agency mission and the programs offered to families in need. Since then, the organization has

grown with new programs underway including a drug and alcohol prevention program run in conjunction with the Town of Babylon and a runaway youth shelter meant to give teens in need a safe haven from abusive home life. “It’s an exciting time for Hope For Youth,” says Director of Program Development, Kate Travers. “Our Youth Shelter Program is almost ready to open. We’ve spent the last few months renovating the house with fresh paint, new appliances, and donated furniture. The hope is that teens living in neglectful or abusive

homes will hear about the home and contact us over Facebook or through a trusted adult to get help.

That’s why we reach out to the community with our run every year. We need to get the word out to these kids that they have an organization looking out for them!”

Like last year’s successful event, the run will include music, refreshments and a Zumba warm up.

In the summer of 2016 the Art League of Long Island is launching PreCollege Programs for students interested in learning what it takes to become and Architect or Fashion Designer.

Taught by established and practicing Architects and Fashion Designers, teens ages 13 to 18 will gain deeper knowledge of these design professions through hands-on contact in their chosen medium, improve their creative design skills, and learn about the industry as a whole.

Art League of Long Island Executive Director Charlee Miller knows well that Long Island’s economy depends on the next generation of professionals and business owners to sustain and grow the economy. As a financial services executive for 37 years prior to joining the Art League, Miller has encountered families working hard to achieve and sustain the American Dream. Having seen many young people leave Long Island for jobs, careers and housing elsewhere, it is important now to provide early Pre-College education that will inspire and stimulate growth in the sciences, technology, engineering and math (STEM) that are crucial to the future economy of Long Island.

Rosie Rosemarie Kupencow – “Rosie,” as I always affectionately called her – was the very first friend I made when I started working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, just about 11 years ago.

The resident proofreader, she introduced herself to me right away, and made sure I felt welcome in this new, unfamiliar setting, showing me the ins and outs of the newspaper she had come to call home for close to a decade at that point.

In addition to being hired as an editorial assistant, I was brought on to help Rose, my new friend, with some of the weekly proofreading duties.

Armed with her magnifying glass and a stash of green pens – “only green,” she would say, “NEVER make corrections with anything else” – she quickly took me under her wing, and we became close companions, often taking breaks together outside in whatever patches of sun we could find, and occasionally heading out for lunch outings at Nathan’s, one of our favorite destinations.

She would always order the fish and chips from Arthur Treacher’s, then laugh hysterically as I looked on in horror, marveling at why someone would go to Nathan’s for anything other than a hotdog.

After a short time, we realized that not only had I attended high school with her daughter, Jennifer, but we now lived just a few short blocks away from each other, and we began to carpool frequently to and from work.

On one memorable return trip, during a rather heavy rainstorm, I infamously “drowned” my car during an ill-fated attempt to navigate down

her flooded street, despite her repeated warnings that it probably wasn’t going to end well.

She never did let me live that one down, deservedly so.

But that was Rose, always dispensing advice – some solicited, some not so much – and serving as the unofficial “work mother” to many of the younger employees.

In that capacity, a coworker and I took her along as a “chaperone” of sorts on my very first trip to Adventureland not so many years ago. As we made our way from one ride to another, taking care not to miss any, the air was filled with the sounds of screaming – not ours, but of our beloved Rosie, yelling, “Get me OFF this thing!!!” and “Why did I let you two talk me into this???”

I don’t think I have ever laughed so hysterically in my life.

Needless to say, that was our first and last trip to any amusement park. But the memories, well, those last a lifetime. (As does the framed photo of the three of us plummeting over “Adventure Falls” at the moment of impact, a priceless reminder of all the fun that was had that day.)

Just last week, Rose lost her battle with cancer, leaving a giant void here at South Bay – and in my heart. Her selfless determination to continue on over the past year was a perfect example of the type of person she was, always putting others first while forging ahead.

What an incredible person, one that is dearly missed by so many.

I’ll miss her sitting in the “friend” chair on the other side of my desk, coming to chat about life and work and family and friends and everything in between.

I’ll miss our goodnatured teasing back and forth... her imitations of my ballet positions... her self-deprecating analysis of her “fashion” sense – “don’t have a hair clip, use a paper clip!”... our phone conversations – in spite of her staunch refusal to ever get a cell phone, and her insistence on keeping important phone numbers on a crumbled piece of paper in her pocketbook… just seeing her smiling face every day at the office.

But mostly, I’ll miss my special friend.

This past December, in celebration of her birthday, Rose and I went out to dinner. She may not have been feeling like her old self, but it was truly like old times.

For over three hours, we sat and talked, just the two of us, reminiscing about the highlights and lowlights of our decade working together, chatting about the latest happenings in our lives… and we laughed, hysterically, about many of the same stories recounted here – and countless others, some not suitable for publication in a family newspaper!

We could have continued talking for three more hours, easily; it seemed that neither of us wanted that night, that moment, to end.

I will always treasure it.

How lucky I was to have her in my life – there to guide the way as I began this new chapter all those years ago… and there to see me through the journey every step of the way since.

Rose, you will never be forgotten – not by me, and not by those who had the wonderful pleasure of knowing you, of loving you, of having you touch their lives.

May you be at peace now.

The Art League of Long Island, located in the heart of Long Island, offers artists and would-be artists many opportunities to gain knowledge and expertise across a large variety of visual arts mediums.

In addition to providing beginner to advanced instruction and skill-building for art professionals, the Art League also offers artists opportunities to display and sell their work in gallery exhibitions and fine art and craft fairs.

2016 promises to be a busy year for artists at the Art League. Of the thirteen exhibits scheduled for 2016, there are still four more juried competitions and shows open to local artists who wish to show their work and, depending on the situation, sell their work.

“Long Island Life” asks photographers from Brooklyn to Montauk: what does living on Long Island mean to you? The exhibit will be on view July 2nd through July 24th.

Deadline for submissions is June 1st. Exhibition juror is Neil Scholl.

At the close of the year, the Art League’s Annual Members’ Exhibition

invites its members to submit one work of art to show in the gallery. In 2015, 233 2-D and 3-D works were on display.

Due to the large number of submissions, the exhibit is broken into two parts.

Part One will be on display November 12th through December 1st and Part Two will be on display December 10th, 2016 through January 8th, 2017.

Entry into the exhibit is not juried, all members who follow the guidelines are accepted. However, awards of excellence and honorable mentions will be determined by a guest juror.

The Art League’s Fine Art & Craft Fairs select only artists and craftspeople who submit sample photos indicating handcrafted works of superior quality.

Of those selected to participate, care is taken to ensure a balanced representation of artistic mediums.

Prizes are awarded to participating artists and craftspeople with the most innovative designs. The fairs run from 10am to 5pm on select weekends.

The Art League’s 49th Annual Art in the Park Fine Art & Craft Fair will

take place June 4th & 5th at Heckscher Park in Huntington. Deadline for artists and craftspeople to submit application is May 20th. About 75 exhibitors participated in last year’s event, with thousands in attendance.

The 53rd Annual Holiday Fine Art & Craft Fair will take place December 3rd and 4th. Deadline to submit applications for this well-attended event is November 24th.

SPRING CLEAN-UP - On Saturday, April 16th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended the Noah Hallock Cemetery spring clean-up, hosted by the Rocky Point Historical Society. Historical Society members and local boy scouts all pitched in to rake away the leaves and winter debris at the cemetery on Hallock Lane in Rocky Point. The cemetery is the resting place of 40 members of the Hallock Family, and the oldest tombstone dates back to 1766.

Arrowhead Elementary School students have a new way to make friends during recess thanks to alumna Emma Stevens, who created three buddy benches for the school as part of a Girl Scout Silver Award project.

Buddy benches are a growing movement in schools across the nation and are placed around playground areas. The concept aims to promote inclusion and kindness by

allowing those looking for a friend to play with a place to sit. Students who see a peer sitting upon these benches are encouraged to invite the individual to join their activity.

“I can recall times from my early elementary years when I would have liked to have a buddy bench to use – I think anyone can,” said Emma. “It feels good to give back to my old school, I have great memories from my time here.”

Emma, a current eighthgrader at R.C. Murphy Junior High School, presented the bright yellow painted benches during three grade-level ribboncutting ceremonies.

During the first ceremony, Brookhaven Supervisor Edward Romaine and Councilwoman Valerie Cartright declared the occasion Emma Stevens’ Day in the town.

Global Learning R.C. Murphy Junior High School students in John Strub’s classes shared a piece of their family’s heritage and culture with peers through an alternative learning project.

The students in Mr. Strub’s global history and Advanced Placement world history classes

made connections to their personal ethnicity or culture through song, dance or performance art.

For example, a quartet of string musicians performed an excerpt from Vivaldi’s “Gloria,” a student played the national anthem from the Republic of Ireland on the tin whistle, a guitarist performed a

The project is an enrichment opportunity for the classes to understand various regions studied beyond the academic component discussed through the courses.

Be a Hero Girl Scout Troop 1133 of Rocky Point hosted their “Be a Hero” blood drive and bone marrow registry event on Saturday, April 16th at the Rocky Point Fire House as a part of their efforts to earn their Silver Award, the second highest award of the Girl

Scouts.

The troop organized the event in partnership with the New York Blood Center, DKMS Bone Marrow Registry and the Live on NY - New York Organ Donor’s network.

Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker

presented the troop with a certificate for their efforts and also signed-up for the DKMS registry by swabbing the inside of her cheek to add her tissue type to the bone marrow donor list.

After reading “A Long Walk to Water,” by Linda Sue Park, seventh-graders in Port Jefferson Middle School were inspired to raise money to supply clean water to those in need.

With the assistance of their teachers, Monica Consalvo and Deirdre Filippi, the students sold MudLOVE hope bracelets through the Water For Good organization. They

raised enough money to supply two years of clean water to individuals living in the Central Republic of Africa.

A Seed for Charity W.S. Mount Elementary School third-grade students in Robert Rotunno’s class turned a simple writing exercise into a creative awareness project for a cause near and dear to at least one classmate’s heart – ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

The writing project called for the students to explain what they would

do with $100 and several noted they would gift it to charity. Patrick Scali, the grandson of ALS advocate and Ride for Life creator Chris Pendergast, educated his peers about ALS and the class moved to turn the creative writing initiative into reality.

Each student contributed to raising $100 for ALS research

and helped to plant a tulip garden dedicated to spreading awareness of the cause in the school’s bus circle.

“It feels really good to support and help those in the community affected by this disease,” said Patrick.

“I hope when people see the garden they are inspired to learn more and find their own ways to help.”

Taste of Long Island The Rocky Point Lions Club ninth annual Taste of Long Island was recently held to honor Mark Baisch and Natalie Auricci Stiefel for their service to the community.

Mr. Baisch was recognized for his work to build affordable homes

for returning veterans and Mrs. Stiefel for her efforts on behalf of the Rocky Point Historical Society.

The event, held at East Wind Inn and Spa in Wading River, was a benefit for the Marty Lyons Foundation, the Rocky Point Historical Society

and the Rocky Point Lions Club.

Also on hand were Rocky Point VFW Post 6249 Commander Joe Cognitore, Rocky Point Lions Club Immediate Past President William Johnson and members of the Rocky Point VFW.

Making History W.S. Mount Elementary School sixth-graders Neal Carpino and Matthew Chen have qualified to compete in the National History Bee National Finals being held this June in Chicago.

The students earned a bid to this final level based on their performance at

the National History Bee regional competition.

During the final stage of the contest, the students will compete for the title of National History Bee Champion as they answer questions about U.S. history and world geography. In addition, they

will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of side events, such as the Great History Hunt, National Citizenship Bee, Pop Culture Challenge, Family Quiz Night and ACE HistoryWorld.
