Together they decided on a week and Cody and his teammates collected food throughout the school. Some students and families learned of the food drive and dropped off food at Cody’s home as well. The school’s Athletes Helping Athletes also ran a diaper donation the same week to further support these

(The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.)

The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The

scholarship is administered by the Hospital Council’s Communications Committee.

Hope for Youth is an Amityville-based, notfor-profit organization that works to facilitate positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families.

In this article we focus on their vital role in promoting foster care across Long Island.

As next month is quickly approaching, it is appropriate to mention that May is National Foster Care Month, an initiative conducted through the US Department of Health and Human Services. The month is devoted to “ensuring a bright future for more than 407,000 children and youth in foster care.” The average age is 8 years old for those children, and there is just about an event split between how many of them are boys and how many are girls.

The month acknowledges foster parents, family members, volunteers, policymakers and others who help children and youth in foster care find permanent homes and connections.

Nationwide, 45 percent of foster children reside in a foster family home with a nonrelative, while 34 percent are with a foster family home with a relative. For 54 percent of foster children, the goal is to reunite the child with a parent or primary caretaker.

The goal is adoption for 28 percent.

On Long Island, Hope For Youth is a central player in the identification and training of foster families. All Hope For Youth foster families receive multiple certifications in parenting skills.

Foster parents take part in mandated educational workshops throughout the course of the year.

By providing the best opportunity for successful placement, Hope For Youth also prevents multiple placements. They also emphasize the role that relative and kinship caregivers

play in the child welfare system and helps children and youth stay connected to their family, their community and their cultural roots if they are unable to safely remain at home.

The team members at Hope For Youth are keenly aware of the unique role that kinship caregivers play in working to achieve reunification for children and youth in foster care. This focus helps to keep moving the system toward one that truly supports families.

The organization also participates in “Wendy’s Wonderful Kids,” part of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.

Under this program, Hope For Youth has two adoption recruiters who bring children waiting to be adopted from foster care closer to safe, loving and permanent homes. The Foundation’s adoption recruitment model has proven effective nationwide in serving children who’ve been in foster care the longest.

Hope For Youth is always looking for new foster parents. They also welcome volunteer and charitable donations to help advance its foster care work, and to advance all of its programming in support of children Island-wide who deserve more stable and fulfilling lives.

As all Rocky Point School District clubs have a purpose, the newest addition, the Rocky Point Fishing Club, will incorporate skills including math, science and language arts and an opportunity to sharpen these elements while exploring local fishing spots.

Headed by science

teacher Joseph Gabrinowitz, the club, in its initial stages this year, received a donation of fishing poles from the Long Island Beach Buggy Association.

Klaus Roudinella, president of the association, recently visited the school and presented the 16 Fluke Combo poles to the club members.

“We are grateful for these gifts that will go a long way in benefiting this new club,” Rocky Point High School Principal Jonathan Hart said. “This is a great addition that has been met with much enthusiasm from students, and we look forward to witnessing the multiple lessons they will learn about our Long Island coastal communities.”

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10.

Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985.

“We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by

volunteers – lets families pick out the things they need, at no cost to them.

State Honors For Port Jefferson Science Olympiad Team The Port Jefferson Middle School Science Olympiad team finished with a rank of eighth overall in the New York State Science Olympiad competition.

The competition was held at East Syracuse Minoa Central High School in Syracuse on April 8 and 9.

“The students were successful through their hard work in studying scientific principles and engineering devices to complete various tasks,” science teacher and coach Adam Bouchard said.

The team earned 10 medals and each team member was able to earn a medal in at least one event. Congratulations goes out to all team members and medal winners.

The War On Ukraine And The Legacy Of World War II The Museum Of American Armor Will Field An Education Day For Long Island’s High School Students That Connects History To Headlines field tactics, and mock small arms in open woods reminiscent of World War II France.

Lawrence Kadish, president and founder of the museum, said, “There has been a deliberate reduction in class time assigned to teaching history, and World War II in particular. As a result, many students have no context for what the world is seeing in Ukraine and how Putin is repeating Hitler’s playbook almost to the letter. We need to appreciate that today’s headlines were written by history and this program seeks to address that.”

Gloria Sesso, the Armor Museum’s education coordinator and copresident of the Long Island Council for the Social Studies, explained, “This program creates an immersion program for
