appreciation of the process of music making –parents dancing with their children and all involved in the sharing of wonderful community spirit,” Knapp said. “It’s a real social and

neighborly event, and it is the ‘together’ that matters. Parents and schools are partners and when we can play together, we build the trust needed to work together.”

Rebuilding Together

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

The beneficiaries of RTLI’s work, lowincome homeowners struggling to get by, are so appreciative of the repairs and modifications that this organization does to keep them safe and improve their quality of life. “I was desperate,” said a widow of a Navy veteran who welcomed RTLI’s helping hand. “Now I have so much less stress and a more comfortable and safer house.”

The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Science Olympiad team participated in the 2023 New York state competition at Le Moyne College in Syracuse on March 17 and 18. The team placed 28th overall out of 60 teams from all over New York State.

Their small o ce in Farmingdale has only one employee, so their volunteers are really a significant part of what they do. “Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization,” said Stella Hendrickson, President of RTLI. “Almost all are retired. They give their time, their talents, their expertise and their hearts

to those who need a helping hand.”

The volunteer teams work tirelessly to help our neighbors, traveling throughout Long Island, using their own cars and tools. They come from all walks of life and professions, from teachers to principals, business owners, social workers, administrative assistants, accountants and truck drivers. The list goes on and on, but they all have one thing in common; their commitment to do the right thing, give back, lend a hand and be there for someone in need.

LaLota Announces Hundreds Of Defense Jobs Coming To Suffolk County

Rep. Nick LaLota (NY-01) announced that hundreds of new jobs would be coming to Suffolk County after Raytheon Technologies Corporation was awarded a contract by the federal government totaling $113,628,201. The contract will cover costs for Raytheon to develop MK 15 closein weapon system (CIWS) upgrades and conversions, system overhauls, and

associated hardware. One of the manufacturing facilities Raytheon will use for this contract is located in Hauppauge, N.Y.

“I am thrilled that hundreds of high-paying defense manufacturing jobs will be coming to Suffolk County. As the son of a former Grumman Secretary and a Navy Veteran, I understand how important the defense industrial base

is to local families and Long Island’s economy,” said LaLota. “Now, as a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, I understand the strategic role Long Island’s defense manufacturing base plays in ensuring America’s military can deter the next conflict, or if needed, win it. I will always work to make sure that Suffolk County maintains our important role in our nation’s defense.”

Little Free Library Brings Free Books To Three Village Historical Society

Three Village Historical Society has a new Little Free Library, thanks to

Eagle Scout candidate Connor Klug of Troop 1776, a Mount Sinai

resident and senior at Mount Sinai High School. Like all Scouts aiming

to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America

program, 17-year-old Klug needed to complete a service project. When it came time to choose one, he thought immediately of his love of history and knew that TVHS was extremely active within the community. Klug got the ball rolling on his project last fall, when he contacted TVHS director Mari Irizarry. She suggested the community could use a Little Free Library like the ones at West Meadow Beach and along Main Street at Three Village Community Trust HQ. “We welcome hundreds of guests to our property each month for events and exhibit tours. The response I’ve heard on social media about Connor’s library has been overwhelmingly positive,” Irizarry said. “The addition of the Little Free Library adds great value to our community, and a special touch to the Society.”

Once Klug got the OK from TVHS, he began the six-month long process of designing the library to look like the BaylesSwezey house, all the while being mindful of durability and weather proofing. Klug then hit the streets asking for materials to be donated for the project with an approximate cost of $500. He certainly had help to complete the project from family, friends, and Troop 1776. “I learned that being a leader isn’t all about telling people what to do. You need to be confident, moral, and decisive, especially when things don’t go as planned” said Klug.

The public is invited to drop off books about history-related topics to be included in the library — and is free to take ones too. The Three Village Historical Society is located at 93 N. Country Road in Setauket, NY.

Board Of Education Meeting Room Dedicated To Late Trustee

William F. Connors Jr. served the Three Village Central School District for 21 years. In this time, he was a board trustee, the vice president of the board and the president of the board. Above all, he was a parent to three Three Village Central School District alumni.

“We honor the legacy of the person who dedicated a large portion of his life to the Three Village Central School District,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kevin Scanlon said. “It is fitting that we acknowledge his commitment to Three Village by dedicating this board room in his memory.”

The board room will feature a plaque with a picture of Mr. Connors that reads in part, “What truly distinguished Mr. Connors was the pure altruism with which he led our district. His unselfish commitment

to the students, staff and school community identified him as a most remarkable educator and board trustee who has made an indelible mark and lasting impact on the Three Village Central School District.”

Mr. Connors’ family joined the board of education and central administration for the dedication of the room.

“The dedication of this board room would have made him proud, but he would have received it with a humble and grateful heart,” Corinne Keane, Mr. Connors’ daughter and P.J. Gelinas Junior High School principal, said. “May his legacy of service, kindness toward others and love of Three Village live on in all that have had the pleasure to know him in his lifetime and in those who will serve this community within the walls of this room.”

Ward Melville High School Science Olympiad Team Heads To Nationals

The Ward Melville Science Olympiad team has qualified for the national tournament due to its outstanding performance at the New York State tournament held last month.

Science Olympiad tournaments are competitions focused on scientific knowledge and engineering innovations. Team members compete by building devices in advance to perform a task and by taking exams in various disciplines of science.

Ward Melville High School won second place overall at the state tournament which

gave them the opportunity to advance. The team had its best overall score in ten years. Additionally, team members won top ten medals in 18 out of 23 events, with first place medals in Wi-Fi Lab and Detector Building – two engineering events that required team members to build their own Wi-Fi routers and digital scales. The team also won first place in Anatomy and Physiology and had notable placements in the Forensics, It’s About Time, Astronomy and Bridge categories.

“We are so excited for this cohort of team members

to experience their first inperson national tournament. It is an honor for us to share our passion for Science Olympiad with the best teams in the nation and it is sure to be an unforgettable weekend for everyone involved,” said coaches Jenny Serigano and Mark Suesser.

The national tourna-ment will be held in-person for the first time in four years and will be hosted by Wichita State University in Kansas from May 19-20. This marks the second year in a row Ward Melville has qualified for the national tournament.
