Drug Take-Back Day Nine Northwell Health facilities will be participating in this year’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 28th, which is an opportunity for people to take unused and expired prescriptions and safely remove them from their homes.

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition ~ Massapequa

With the support of Senator John Brooks and Assemblywoman Christine Pellegrino, MTAC invites all residents to dispose of their unused or expired medications at this Take Back Day. Parents and residents are encouraged to be a part of the solution as 71% of young adults in the Massapequas who misuse prescription drugs get them from the medicine cabinets of friends and family. Instructions: keep all medications in the original containers; block out name for anonymity; do not cross out medication information; syringes and sharps will also be accepted.

Of Weddings & Wandering Just last weekend, I was able to satisfy my urge for a little springtime strolling in the city when the opportunity arose to accompany a friend from college to several New York Bridal Fashion Week runway shows. While I was initially far more interested in the aimless wandering aspect of the day, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the experience of attending these avant-garde displays.

Never having heard of the featured designers prior to seeing their latest collections in person, they proved to be quite impressive. Sure, I could have done without the crowns of flowers as accent, and I’m fairly certain I will not be accessorizing any future bridal gowns with high-top sneakers; but, quirks aside, some of the styles were quite stunning when viewed more as works of art rather than practical fashion.

At the close of one of the shows, the audience was caught

off guard by an impromptu wedding proposal, orchestrated by the boyfriend of one of the featured models. As she stood aghast, he expressed his love and desire to spend the rest of his life with the woman before him, saying he could think of no more appropriate venue to pop the question than on a runway in the midst of bridal week.

Judging by the standing ovation delivered by the crowd - among them, the family of the blushing bride-to-be - it seemed he couldn’t have picked a more opportune moment, one they will surely treasure forever.

Bridal business aside, we managed to squeeze in some sightseeing on what happened to be one of the warmest days we have been graced with so far this season. From the Flatiron District over to the West Village, we traversed a solid six miles or so of the downtown area, taking in the nuances of each neighborhood and - of

course - finding time to snap some photos along the way.

It was during an ill-fated “selfie” attempt in front of the Flatiron Building that a kind woman took pity on us and offered to take the photo, saying, “I know it’s probably taboo to walk up to random strangers and volunteer to take their picture, but you two seemed like you could use a little help.” Why yes, we could indeed. Score one for acts of kindness from fellow tourists.

In all, it was a day short on the sort of haphazard adventure which has become the norm with most New York City day trips I have ventured on; actually, quite seamless. It’s funny, the tendency to almost miss the chaos when things go according to plan.

I’ll have to remind myself of that irony the next time I’m traipsing 50 blocks out of the way to make a reservation at the third restaurant on the list, while carrying my shoes.

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families.

This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area.

In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team.

Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.

Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to cross the finish line knowing they’re making a

Drug Take-Back Day Continued From 2 October. The latest event is organized by the Drug Enforcement Association.

“It was so gratifying to see the large quantity of unneeded and expired drugs brought to Northwell Health facilities last drug take back day in October,” said Peg Butler, Northwell Health’s assistant vice president of marketing and external relations who helped organize last year’s efforts in Manhattan as well as this year’s receptacles.

“We’ll dispose of a lot more this year as we double

the number of Northwell facilities participating.

We want to do everything we can to keep these drugs from falling in to the wrong hands. This is a hugely important community service we’re proud to provide.”

Unused prescription medications can be a temptation for curious teenagers and others to experiment with opiates or other drugs. Northwell Health has made one of its missions to help curb the opioid epidemic in New York State through its Northwell Health Opioid

There were 2,726 deaths related to opioids in New York State in 2015, according to the New York State Department of Health, up from 2,256 the prior year. New York City saw 893 of those deaths; there were 463 more on Long Island.

“Hearing these staggering numbers each year breaks my heart and has prompted us at Northwell Health to aggressively work in a

variety of ways to try to lessen the amount of opiate and prescription drug abuse in our area,” said Jonathan Morgenstern, PhD, assistant vice president of addiction services at Northwell Health. “People bringing their unused prescriptions to these sites can help us make an impact on the opioid epidemic.”

In addition to removing unused prescriptions drugs from the community, Northwell Health is working on several initiatives to target opioid abuse from screening and life-saving

Clinical Nurse Assisting (CNA) students from the Academy at Milliken Technical Center in Oakdale recently visited a sophisticated nursing simulation lab to learn and practice industry skills such as wound care, patient assessment, and managing medical equipment. Students did so with high-fidelity, life-size mannequins while under the guidance of other students and instructors in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Program. The lab and LPN Program are based in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Adult Education

Center in Brentwood.

The CNA students are part of the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, the Career and Technical Education Program at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES).

Collaboration across the numerous ESBOCES programs provides students with in-depth, real-life perspectives and opportunities to utilize valuable hands-on applications.

Working together, students used four mannequins to learn how to care for a burn patient, remove a urinary drainage bag, conduct proper patient

assessment, and change the dressing on a patient after a tracheotomy. This included taking a culture, venting the area with a suction tube, and donning isolation protection gear to prevent microorganism contamination.

Said Gina Marie Martin, Nurse Assisting teacher, “The goal here is to see if my students want to continue their education by applying for the LPN program. Our sim lab is the closest they will get to doing the level of work LPNs do. Therefore, there is no better place for them to make that determination than here.”

Opening Day

On April 14th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Jane Bonner attended the North Shore Little League (NSLL) Opening Day ceremonies. The league, which was established in 1963, offers boys and girls, ages six through sixteen,

the opportunity to play organized baseball and softball with their peers at fields on Route 25A in Rocky Point.

7-Eleven is a long-time sponsor of Dress for Success and has donated food and refreshments at many their events.

Founded in New York City in 1997, Dress for Success is an international not-for-profit organization offering services designed to help clients find jobs and remain employed. Each Dress for Success client receives one suit when she

has a job interview and can return for a second suit or separates when she finds work. In 1999, Brookhaven was the first affiliate to be established as part of the worldwide nonprofit organization. The women served by Dress for Success Brookhaven come from across Long Island.

They are job ready women who have been referred by over 250 local non-profit organizations; including domestic violence agencies, veteran’s organizations, homeless shelters and job training programs. Dress for Success Brookhaven is sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven Department of Housing and Human Services, Division of

In addition to the student’s exhibits in the gym, this year’s event included something called the ‘Mercy Contraption’, a Rube Goldberg type of device that was conceived, created and demonstrated by the students from Our Lady of Mercy elementary school in Hicksville.

While each project demonstrated at the STEM Fair qualified to be part of the event by winning their respective local events, there were a number of projects identified and recognized at the STEM Fair for their outstanding effort.

Projects were broken out into two levels; level one was for students from the 5th and 6th grades and level 2 was for 7th and 8th grade students.

Because the focus is on helping students develop problem-solving skills, the students’ instructions were to pick a problem, identify a proposed solution, then create a prototype that demonstrates your

solution. The winning projects included the level 1 winner by Matthew Zaromatidis from Notre Dame School in New Hyde Park. Matthew’s project explored the design for earthquake-proof buildings. Of the level 2 competitors, the judges liked David Solan’s app for day-planning best. David is a student at St. Patrick School in Huntington.

Each level recognized the top three projects and the winners took home gift cards of $75, 50 and 25 dollars respectively acknowledging their first, second or third place finishes. “Of course, each student who gets to this level is a winner” Stated Diocesan Schools Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Walsh, “and each was recognized with a certificate in an award ceremony that followed the fair.” Walsh and Biscione personally handed out the awards and congratulated all of the participating students and their rightfully proud parents.

Local Artist Chosen Elaine Faith Thompson, a Long Island native from Bohemia, is back at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. The United States Golf Association has chosen her as one of several artists who will paint a limitededition, fine-art print commemorating the 2018 U.S. Open Championship.

The 118th U.S. Open will be contested June 14th17th, at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton.

Thompson felt honored to receive the phone call on December 6th and to have been commissioned

to paint the golf course for the 118th U.S. Open Championship.

She spent the following two days photographing the magnificent golf course and clubhouse.

Given her roots, Thompson has worked on many paintings for USGA championships in Long Island and the New York Metropolitan area.

Her first golf painting was of Bethpage State Park’s Black Course for the 2002 U.S. Open. She also worked with the USGA on posters for the 2004 U.S. Open at

Shinnecock Hills, the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club, the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black and the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open at Sebonack Golf Club. Limited edition prints will be available soon.

Thompson is also well known for her New York and Long Island scenic works, including: lighthouses; The Big Duck; Theodore Roosevelt’s home at Sagamore Hill; Fire Island; Riverhead Raceway and the Peconic River; Aqueduct and Roosevelt

Raceways; Smithtown Bull; Downtown Sayville and Schoolhouse; Mount Sinai Garden; Lady Golfer at Timber Point Timber; and the Statue of Liberty.

Her portraits include “Pope Francis in America,” Derek Jeter, John Heisman, and George Washington at Valley Forge. Her other portraits are of pets, houses, cars, boats, motorcycles and planes, all painted in selected scenes.

At the reception Thompson will also be displaying other art including very affordable prints which

make great personalized gifts for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. The most famous commission that Thompson received was from President Ronald Reagan for the official poster design of the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial Statue in Washington, D.C. Unveiling of the U.S. Open Top Secret painting will be on Sunday, April 29th at the Bellport Community Center, 4 Bell Street, Bellport at 3 p.m. An artist reception

After 13 years of dedication and perseverance to academics, extracurricular activities and community outreach, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School seniors Ibuki Iwasaki and Eli Doyle have been designated valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, of the Class of 2018.

“I’m extremely honored,” Ibuki said, “especially because some of the valedictorians and salutations in the past were people whom I really looked up to both in and outside of school.

I’ve always aimed for good grades…becoming valedictorian was definitely a goal of mine.”

Ibuki has earned a 101.40 GPA. She is president of the high school National Honor Society, a member of the Mathletes team, Science Olympiad and Latin Club. She has been on the varsity tennis team since eighth grade and was undefeated individually in the league this year.

Her list of awards is comprehensive and include being a National Merit Scholarship recipient, AP Scholar with Distinction, a gold medalist for three years and a silver medalist for one year on the National Latin Exam, and a first-place and thirdplace winner in Science Olympiad individual events.

Her musical talents include having a perfect

score for three years at the Level VI New York State School Music Association Festival and being selected for All-County, Long Island String Festival and Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association festivals.

Ibuki’s community involvement revolve around playing violin; she has been a concert mistress in a youth orchestra and the school orchestra; has performed chamber music at the precollege program at Stony Brook University and has volunteered to perform at the village library and local daycare and nursing home. She is also tutors Japanese-speaking people the English language.

Last summer, Ibuki interned at Brookhaven National Laboratory in her first official research experience. Before that, she spent time at a laboratory at Stony Brook University where her mother is a research scientist.

As the salutatorian of Earl L. Vandermeulen High School, Eli will graduate with a 100.85 GPA. Like Ibuki, he challenged himself by enrolling in many Advanced Placement, college-level and honors courses.

Beyond the classroom, he excelled on the field, playing tennis since ninth grade and participating as part of the stage crew for school plays, musical and concerts.

“One of the perks of being in a small school is that

there is a very cooperative attitude, even among the most competitive of the students,” Eli said. “This is something we all take for granted, but I wouldn’t have achieved this honor without help and support of my awesome classmates and dedicated teachers.”

Eli has been a member of Science Olympiad since sixth grade, on the Mathletes team, the Academic Team, and a member and officer of the Student Organization for all four years of his high school career. He also had the unique opportunity to take part in the prestigious Simons Summer Research Program at Stony Brook University where he studied ferroelectric materialism the physics lab.

Eli has received honors from the Suffolk County Junior Tennis League, a Coach’s Award for Team Sportsmanship and the American Math Competition Level 10 in 2015. He was also a recipient of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award in 2015 and The Robert A. Belfer Family Fellowship Award for Travel and Study in Israel in 2016.

“Ibuki and Eli are two exceptional students,” Principal Christine Austen said. “In addition to being at the top of their class, they are both well-rounded, very involved in extracurricular activities and each of them has received numerous accolades to date. They are on to great things in the future and I wish them continued success.”

Although she is awaiting word from several colleges and looks to major in physics, Ibuki has been accepted to MIT, where she is considering attending.

Her post college plans include working in a STEMrelated career. Eli plans to major in Applied Physics at Brown University and is already considering graduate school.

Math League Port Jefferson Middle School students had an educationally enriching experience when they participated for the first time in the New York Mathematics League.

Sixth-graders Emily Ambrozy, Eric Chen, Viviane Kim, Nicholas Smirnov and Carman Stanton worked as a team

and ranked 20 out of 71 schools in the state on the academically oriented competition, which consisted of a variety of math topics, including algebra, geometry and problem-solving.

According to math teacher Megan Ryan, the students were excited to participate

and be recognized for their mathematical achievements.

“They enjoyed the challenge and are encouraged to continue to develop their exploration of mathematical ideas,” Ryan said. “It was a positive experience for them to decipher some of the difficult math solutions.”

Best in Show Four students from the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology received “Best in Show” distinctions at the recent Long Island Media Arts Show held in Dix Hills at the Five Towns College campus.

The Academy is the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES and has schools in Oakdale, Bellport, and Riverhead.

One Academy student was recognized for his work in the videography category and three were recognized for their art in the photography division.

The Long Island Media Arts Show provides a forum for high school students across the region to showcase their graphic arts, photography, and videography in an environment where they receive evaluations

from experienced judges who work in these fields. Students receive feedback from industry professionals and view the work of their peers from across Long Island. The show has been produced by the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Arts-in-Education Department, a program that integrates the arts into K-12 curriculum to enhance learning, for the past 28 years.

Printmaking Exhibition From May 11th through September 3rd, the Long Island Museum will present Revolution in Printmaking: Larry Rivers and Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE).

In 1957, at a small printmaking workshop based inside a cottage in West Islip, Long Island, artist Larry Rivers (1923-2002) and poet Frank O’Hara (19261966) began their famed lithographic project Stones, a groundbreaking but playfully approachable convergence of words and imagery.

Stones was published two years later as a thirteenpage portfolio by Tatyana Grosman (1904-1982), a Russian immigrant, who was able to get Universal Limited Art Editions printing concern off the ground. This was ULAE’s

first of many solicited projects with artists in years to come and, for Rivers, an initial voyage into printmaking.

As Rivers’ worldwide prominence as an artist grew by the early 1960s, his connections and support within a world of up-andcoming artists also helped build ULAE into a highlysuccessful and influential operation. Revolution in Printmaking: Larry Rivers and Universal Limited Art Editions focuses on the vital influence of Rivers and the growth and continued sustainability of ULAE, still based in Suffolk County, Long Island.

Over the decades, first through the efforts of Grosman and later under the expert guidance of Bill Goldston, ULAE has worked with a wide range and style of young,

ambitious, talented, and internationallyfamed artists that have included Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Helen Frankenthaler, Marisol and Jim Dine. The exhibition features nearly 70 works of art – paintings, lithographs, intaglios, monoprints – from these artists and many more.

This exhibition is sponsored by Bank of America, Empire National Bank, The Peter & Barbara Ferentinos Family Endowment, New York Community Bank Foundation, New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and Robert W. Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together.

Knowing that “Et tu, Brute?” were Julius Caesar’s famous last words in Latin was helpful to the Port Jefferson students who recently took part in the Latin Certamen at Stony Brook University.

Port Jefferson competed against students from 14 schools across Nassau and Suffolk counties in the fastpaced, academic contest that poses questions about Latin grammar, vocabulary, word derivations, Roman life, history, mythology and literature.

Students compete on the level of Latin in which they

are enrolled. Two eighthgrade teams competed on Level I, two ninth-grade teams competed on Level II, one 10th-grade team competed on Level III and three teams – made up of juniors and seniors – competed on the Advanced Level.

On April 13th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright announced the dedication of a 46acre parcel in Setauket as the Dr. Lee Koppelman Nature Preserve. The parcel is heavily wooded with a variety of tree and shrub species and understory, providing an excellent example of a North Shore deciduous forest. The property was acquired approximately 45 years ago as passive open space, and the Town is in the beginning stages of pursuing an additional 11 acres in the area to add to its Nature Preserve portfolio. Currently, the Town has dedicated 13 other properties to the Nature Preserve system, including the nearby Laurel Ridge-Setauket Woods Nature Preserve along Belle Meade Road in Setauket. Dr. Lee Koppelman was the first Suffolk County Planner, hired by the first County Executive, H. Lee Dennison. Dr. Koppelman served for twenty-eight years as county planner and forty-one years as regional planner for Nassau and Suffolk. Today, Dr. Koppelman heads the Center for Regional Policy Studies at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He is regarded as the father of sustainability on Long

Island, for he was the first of the power players to conceptualize the idea of preserving space in the interest of health and future generations.

Dr. Koppelman has played a leading role in preserving open space, particularly in the parklands purchased by Suffolk County in the early 1970s. He was an early supporter for the preservation of open space and protecting farmland in Suffolk County, leading to Suffolk County being the first local government in the nation to establish a formal program to preserve farmland through the purchase of development rights. His concern for the natural environment was reflected by a strong interest regarding Long Island’s fragile and vulnerable sole source aquifer, which comprises Long Island’s drinking water supply. Dr. Koppelman served with distinction as Chair of the Town of Brookhaven’s Open Space Committee from 1999 to 2016, during which time hundreds of farmland and open space properties were identified and approved for public acquisition. Today, Dr. Koppelman continues to head the Center for Regional Policy Studies at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

The annual event raises funds for breast cancer organizations and research programs on Long Island.

Jenn and Rachel are on the Adelphi Team and they have raised funds for the LI2Day Walk. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, located in Garden City, is

There is a registration fee of $75 and each walker is encouraged to raise a minimum of $500. To raise the funds to participate Rachel and Jen did a charitable 50/50 super bowl pool. There is also an opportunity for those who can’t walk, but still would like to participate by raising money to register as a “virtual walkers.” There is no registration fee or fundraising requirement for virtual walkers. Weekly training walks are held in Eisenhower Park as well as in Heckscher State Park.

Suffolk School Recycling Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today launched the first of its kind Suffolk School Recycling Program, a partnership between Suffolk County and six school districts that will help schools meet their New York State recycling mandate, save taxpayer dollars and teach students, faculty and the community to become stewards of the environment.

Suffolk County will deploy approximately 1,000 recycle bins to 11 schools, enabling nearly 6,000 students to participate in the program.

“The School Recycling Pilot Program is the latest innovation for how municipalities can work together to reduce their carbon footprint,” said County Executive Bellone. “I want to thank our school district superintendents and Winter Brothers for their willingness to participate in this groundbreaking program and bring these best practices into the classroom.”

Under the program,

schools will be able to reduce the frequency of trash pickup and dumpster volume while diverting more recyclables from entering into the trash.

With the potential of thousands of students learning the importance of recycling and engaging in the process themselves, this will prevent vast amounts of paper and plastic that are generated from schools from ending up in waste streams. Based on its own analysis, Suffolk County will initially tap into 5,798 students with the launch of the pilot program, utilizing them as a resource to recycle in the classroom.

Suffolk County anticipates working with more school districts in the near future to rollout the recycling program on a full scale. Those who participate will be required to sign an intermunicipal agreement that clarifies the respective roles and responsibilities of the various municipal partners. The initial school districts participating in the pilot include:

• Elwood School District • Brentwood School District • Hampton Bays School District • Remsenburg-Speonk School District • Middle Country School District • Quogue School District Program Supplies Each school will receive two recycling bins in each classroom, office, cafeteria, and athletic field, along with scales that will allow the students to measure recycled materials and report on environmental impact.

Elementary and Middle Schools Every classroom, shared space and office will receive two recycling bins with specialized lids, with one for paper and one for comingles such as empty plastic, glass and aluminum.

Each building will be supplied with one industrial scale to participation the “Weigh to Recycle Program and measure the results of their success.

High Schools

Every classroom, shared space and office will receive on recycle bin with a specialized lid for all mixed recyclables including paper, plastic, glass and aluminum.

All Buildings The custodial staff of each building will receive 50 gallon rolling bins to collect the recyclables.

Each cafeteria will receive a recycling center, outdoor bins will be supplied for athletic fields, and an additional dumpster will be supplied for each school by the carter.

School Recycling Manual Suffolk County will provide participating school districts with a School Recycling Manual, which will serve as a guide for the schools in understanding the various aspects of the program including the process of recycling, the program implementation, items that are considered recyclable and nonrecyclable, program supplies and many more.

The manual will contain a voluntary curriculum of

educational components that are related to reallife application, including math, science and civics lessons.

The program also includes a Weigh to Recycle component that offers students the opportunity to perform much of the recycling themselves and allow them to measure their results.

Each week, students will be encouraged to help empty their classroom paper bin and bring the materials to a designated area where it can be weighed on an industrial scale.

The students will be able to keep track of the amount of paper that is recycled in the building, log the data, and at the end of the month announce the amount of paper that was recycled and the environmental benefit in quantifiable terms.

The New York State Shared Services Initiative signed into law by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo allows participating municipalities and school districts to be eligible for state matching funds for savings achieved through

cooperative efforts. Suffolk County is currently working on a number of programs with towns, villages and school districts in a plan that was approved unanimously by municipal leaders last year. Matching funds will be applied for in conjunction with the Shared Services Initiative as well as efforts to obtain recycling grants from New York State.

The Suffolk School Recycling Program is modeled off of the awardwinning Town of North Hempstead School Recycling Partnership Program. The initiative was launched in 2008 under then-North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman, in which the Town distributed recycling bins to every single classroom and office in each of its participating 11 school districts. To date, more than 46,000 students have participated in the program. The Town was the recipient of the New York State Environmental Excellence Award in 2009 in recognition of the program’s success.

the Scenes Tour Saturday, June 9th, at 9 a.m.

Follow one of the presentday Lighthouse Keepers on his rounds. This bottom to top tour takes you from the auxiliary generator and the Light Keepers workshop in the basement of the Keeper’s Quarters to the beacon in the lantern room of the lighthouse tower. Includes a tour of the Lens Building, which houses the original first order Fresnel Lens, and the Boat House. Tour takes approximately 2-1/2 hours.

Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers.

The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers.

The goal is to improve children’s literacy, strengthen communities,

develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers.

It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America.

Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year.

AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service.

IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer questions and prepare tax returns. In addition

to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest, dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have less than $25,000 in annual expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits.

Get a dilated eye exam.

Getting a comprehensive

dilated eye exam is the only way to know if your eyes are healthy and you are seeing your best. Talk to your eye care professional about how often you should have one.

Live a healthy lifestyle.

Eating healthy foods, maintaining a healthy weight, managing chronic conditions, and not smoking can lower your

risk of eye disease.

Know your family history. Talk to your family members about their eye health history.

It’s important to know if anyone has been diagnosed with an eye disease, since many are hereditary.

Use protective eyewear.
