The Week That Was By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let’s try something different for a change. Instead of waiting until the eleventh hour to compose my thoughts for the week, I’ve decided to jot down a bit each day, with hopes that these random ramblings will gel into a somewhat coherent theme.

Sounds just abstract enough to work.

Monday…

The weekly “fresh start” we all seek, yet are often disappointed by about 10 minutes into. For me, the perfect opportunity to catch up on the avalanche of e-mails that have surely accumulated over the weekend, while methodically trying to plan the remainder of the week’s activities. A quick scan of social media says everyone is still buzzing about last night’s

highly anticipated season premiere of Game of Thrones.

Me, I’m still working my way through the series of five larger-than-life books.

Tuesday…

Into the fray again, trying to keep pace with the workflow in preparation for my day off on Friday, yet another reason to get a jump on that column.

Nothing but rain and clouds outside, which makes for a decidedly dreary disposition.

But, I suppose such an atmosphere is far more conducive to accomplishing tasks on the endless To Do list.

Better not to be tempted by the sun’s rays, beckoning you to take an extended lunch.

Wednesday…

Yet another lovely day in the neighborhood, or so I briefly glimpsed on my way into the office. Word is it’s 66º and sunny. One of these days, this

kind of weather will coincide with a weekend. Maybe. But alas, here I sit at my keyboard, typing away at the local community news and events.

Summer fun in the sun can’t come soon enough.

Thursday…

The eleventh hour. One day short of a deadline; for me, tomorrow will be spent helping to run the Society of Professional Journalists’ Annual Region I Conference, this year hosted by Hofstra University and sponsored by our very own Press Club of Long Island. A full schedule of panels and lectures by some of the region’s finest journalists is on tap, a muchneeded reminder of why it was I became involved in this field to begin with.

And so, I’m off. Stay tuned for a full recap of the conference next week!

Together they decided to motivate employees to sign up to help raise funds and awareness for Friends of Karen and for the past three years many of their employees trained together to do the 10K event.

“Each year, post-event, there was not only a sense of accomplishment in helping the families of Friends of Karen but a significant positive shift in how our staff were relating to one another.” This year, soon after the employees starting mapping out their training course, one of them shared that a colleague had a child diagnosed with cancer and sent them directly to Friends of Karen for assistance. “We witnessed first-hand how they respond so earnestly to families in need,” said Ms.

A genuine camaraderie among employees, moraleboosting and team building are some of the terms heard from representatives of several companies who have joined the annual Walk-Run for Friends of Karen at the Long Island Marathon. This year’s events, 5K Walk-Run on Saturday, May 2nd, at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, and 10K, half and full marathons scheduled for Sunday, May 3rd, at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, will again be filled with the enthusiasm of hundreds of Friends of Karen supporters – among the thousands of Marathon participants – being able to help families who turn to the tri-state organization for assistance when a child is diagnosed with cancer or another life-threatening illness.

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, will be dancing for a cause-Autism.

Adults served by DDI are partnering up with students of Vic D’Amore’s American Studio of Performing Arts for the fourth year to produce Dancing for Autism on Friday, May 15th at the Kings Park High School Auditorium. Tickets will be sold at $10 general admission or $5 for senior

citizens and children under 12 to benefit DDI’s Adult Day Program. Raffles will also be available.

Dancers will take to the stage with numerous acts including tap dancing, freestyle dance and Irish step pieces. The dance program originated with two devoted DDI staff members whose determination and passion to bring the arts to the adults served by DDI culminated with this very special collaboration with Vic’s studio.

by DDI with education, personal skills development, recreation and job training services to help prepare each individual to become productive members of the community in which they reside.

Good old spring.

Crocheting For The Community

Although July is not exactly sweater weather, numerous residents of Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community are busily crocheting so that come July, five trees on the grounds of the Long Island Museum at Stony Brook will be sporting brightly colored knitwear. The Jefferson’s Ferry residents are part of team contributing to a crowd-sourced, crowd-pleasing yarn art installation, The Crocheted Tree Project. Developed by nationally known artist Carol Hummel, the Crocheted Tree Project will be installed in July for a two week display, with a dedication July 19th.

Recently, volunteers from the Three Village community, including the Jefferson’s Ferry group, gathered at the Long Island Museum for an informal workshop in which Hummel teaches the crochet technique for this project. Between now and early July, the volunteers will produce the many yards of crochet needed for the installation.

“We take our commitment to the larger community very seriously,” said Jefferson’s Ferry resident Claire Donohue. “We’ve got the energy, enthusiasm and skills to lend a hand to just about any project that could use some help. We’re very proud of

our volunteerism and the impact we can make in the lives of our neighbors.” Joining Claire at the workshop were Jefferson’s Ferry residents Audrey Ansel, June Athanasian, Carol Babcock, Marilyn McKeon, Rosemarie Thompson, Thora Wagner and Margaret Wisniewski.

sales. They then use the money raised to buy supplies and make donations to support community based not for profits that provide shelter, food and supplies for those in need. Residents also work with local students and other youth on joint projects. Jefferson’s Ferry will often provide transportation and other means of support to help them accomplish their objectives.

Anniversary Event On April 13th, Supervisor Ed Romaine was joined by five former Brookhaven Town Supervisors to celebrate the 360th Anniversary of Brookhaven Town.

The event was open to the public and drew hundreds of residents, elected officials and other guests including the Brookhaven Town Council, New York State Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul as well as former Suffolk County Executive and current Suffolk County Historian Peter F. Cohalan.

Preschool and high school students from the Academy at Ward Tech didn’t have to take a bus, train, or car to see chinchillas, ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, a tortoise, corn snakes, a leopard gecko and guppies. They walked across the campus in Riverhead and visited the Animal Science Program.

Autism Awareness

Rocky Point School District students and staff worked to increase awareness and promote understanding of a developmental disability that has risen rapidly in the past few decades as they marked Autism Awareness month this April.

The middle and high

school coordinated several creative campaigns and fundraisers as they marked the day on April 10th.

Informational announcements were made over the loud speakers, staff members donated funds to wear jeans to school as part of a “Jeans/Genes” for Autism fundraiser and

students and staff had the chance to purchase Autism Awareness bracelets. Proceeds from both fundraisers were donated to Autism Speaks, an organization dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and cure for autism.

OUTREACH DONATION - Students from Eastern Suffolk BOCES Outreach House donated a planter to Good Samaritan Hospital’s Nutrition and Food Services Department. Fresh herbs will be planted by the students and used to enhance the flavor and presentation of the more than 1,200 meals prepared daily for patients, visitors and staff at the hospital. Outreach House provides education designed to empower students through academic and social growth. A group of 12 students worked together as a team in the design and construction of a teak planter that will grow organic fresh herbs year round.

PROMOTION CEREMONY - Suffolk County Legislator Tom Barraga recently attended the Promotion Ceremony for the Suffolk County Police Department. Over 50 officers were awarded promotions. Among them was Joseph Busweiler a 22-year veteran of the Suffolk County Police Department who was promoted from Lieutenant to Captain.Suffolk Det. Sgt. John Busweiler, Joseph’s brother, proudly pinned the captain’s shield on his younger brother as Joseph’s wife and sons looked on.

Dangers Of Bullying As part of Miller Place School District’s ongoing commitment to educate students and parents about the dangers of bullying, North Country Road Middle School and Miller Place High School recently invited John Halligan to speak about student confrontation and youth depression. “Ryan’s Story” encompassed Halligan’s recount of his son’s suicide and included a question and answer session with students.

“One of our jobs as educators is to inform students about the dangers

of bullying and to teach them how to handle dangerous situations when they present themselves.” said Superintendent of the Miller Place School District Dr. Marianne Higuera. “Ryan’s Story’ demonstrated a powerful and emotional message that our students will take with them and use to make positive change.”

Students learned how online and in-person bullying from Ryan’s peers played a significant role in his suicide. Mr. Halligan presented tips to students about the online world and

how certain situations can be avoided. Students were encouraged to speak up against bullying and not be a bystander.

Mr. Halligan also addressed parents about bullying and how technology has become a major factor. He defined the terms bullying and cyber bullying, shared some issues with social media and named some common teen issues.

Parents received bullying statistics and recommendations for handling the situation should their child fall victim to bullying.

DANGERS OF BULLYING - Miller Place School District’s North Country Road Middle School students shared their thoughts and questions with John Halligan after he gave a presentation on the dangers of bullying. He later spoke with Miller Place High School students and district parents to define bullying and recommendations for handling a bullying situation.

From Alaska to Florida, and from Maine to Hawaii, on Saturday, May 9th, U.S. Postal Service letter carriers across the country will visit homes and businesses in every city, suburb and town in America to collect food for what is the nation’s largest food drive.

Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, feeding and supporting 316,000 Long Islanders annually, is proud to announce that it has been chosen by the National Association of Letter Carriers and the U.S. Postal Service to be the Long Island region’s sole recipient of its “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive taking place on Long Island, and nationally, on Saturday May 9th.

Here’s how it works.

Long Islanders are being asked to set out non-perishable food by their mailboxes on May 9th, which will then be picked up by their letter carriers while delivering the day’s mail. The letter carriers will then deliver their collected food to an Island Harvest “Stamp Out Hunger” warehouse – where an army of volunteers will sort food, to be distributed immediately to Island Harvest’s network of 570 member agencies, including food pantries and soup kitchens throughout Long Island.

“While the letter carriers do all of the day’s heavy lifting, Stamp Out Hunger makes donating easy. All people have to do is leave their donation by their mailbox,” asserts Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO, Island Harvest.

“Our goal is for every family to donate something, and let their letter carriers do the rest. It’s that simple.”

“The harsh winter weather this year presented Long Islanders experiencing hunger with many challenges, including pay loss due to the weather, making it an even more difficult time to put food on the table,” explained Dresner. “This, coupled with the usual springtime need for food following the depletion of our holiday donations, makes this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive essential.”

Since the inception of Stamp Out Hunger in 1992, over 1.3 billion pounds of food have been collected by letter carriers in the United States. Locally, last year Long Islanders donated more than 326,000 pounds of food and this year, Island Harvest expects a similar amount to be collected by letter carriers on 2,219 carrier routes across Long Island.
