People know to protect their skin and eyes from the sun. Sun exposure can be dangerous for the body, but the sun’s rays also can damage automobiles.

Leaving a vehicle exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time increases the risk of damage to its interior and exterior. It’s important that car and truck owners recognize this so they can mitigate the potential problems sun and heat may cause.

Testing conducted at the State Farm® Vehicle Research Facility found interior vehicle air temperatures have been recorded well in excess of 145 F. Interior surfaces exposed to direct sunlight have been recorded at temperatures in excess of 195 F.

The automotive repair service Fix Auto says the sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause the vehicle’s paint to peel and fade over time.

UV rays break down the molecules in the paint and make it appear dull. The company says red paint is particularly susceptible because red paint molecules deteriorate faster in the sun than other paint colors.

To prevent potential sun-related damage, take these precautions.

• Avoid direct sunlight.

Park in the shade as much as possible.

• Crack a window. If it is safe to do so, lower interior air temperature and equalize air pressure by opening up car windows a little.

• Use a windshield

protector. Reflect sunlight away and keep the vehicle cool with a windshield sun protector that unfolds and slides into place.

• Use a protectant wax. A layer of wax can

offer another layer of protection against the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

• Wash the car frequently. Washing and hand-drying the vehicle helps to remove dirt and

other debris which can cause micro-scratches in the paint.

• Install seat covers.

Seat covers can protect leather and fabric upholstery. A leather

conditioner can help prevent cracks and tears from sunlight and heat.

These steps are simple preventative measures that protect vehicles against sun damage.

• Air filter: The air filter on a car or truck prevents debris, dirt and other contaminants from getting into the engine.

And The Design Award Goes To… Rocky Point High School The Rocky Point High School Robotics Club recently competed in the FIRST Tech Challenge Long Island Qualifier #2, and Team Tesseract won the Design Award.

Touted as industrial design at its best by FIRST, the award recognizes design elements of the robot that are both functional and aesthetic.

The Design Award is presented to teams that incorporate industrial design elements into their solution. These design

elements could simplify the robot’s appearance by giving it a clean look, be decorative in nature or otherwise express the creativity of the team. The winning design should not compromise the practical operation of the robot but complement its purpose.

According to coach Mark Moorman, above all other robots, the judges only had eyes for this machine.

“As we all know, this year presented many challenges, to say the least,” said Mr. Moorman, who coaches

along with assistant coach Mrs. Dorothy Burns. “After spending the first four months fully virtual, the team rose to overcome many obstacles,” he said, including assembling their robot virtually.

Congratulations to students Jacob Bazata, James Carmody, Eve Hald, Nick O’Shea, Leila Riedl, Misha Zaslavsky and Sasha Zaslavsky for understanding the value of hard work, innovation and working as a team.

SPECIAL AUTOMOBILE ISSUE How To Lower The Cost Of Auto Insurance Auto insurance is a must-have for drivers. While it might seem hard to believe, as of 2019 there are still some places in the United States where auto insurance is not mandatory. Auto insurance is mandatory in Canada, though each province has its own requirements in terms of the minimum amount of coverage allowable by law.

Many people, even those in places where auto insurance is not mandatory, recognize the importance of being insured before they get behind the wheel. However, that doesn’t mean those same drivers would not like to cut the cost of their auto insurance policies. A 2019 analysis from the online financial resource NerdWallet found that the average cost of car insurance in the United States is $1,621 per year. Average insurance costs vary significantly in Canada, where data from the General Insurance Statistical Agency found that, in 2019, the average annual insurance premium in British Columbia exceeded $1,800, while drivers in Quebec paid slightly more than $700 annually.

No matter where drivers live, chances

are they would love to lower their auto insurance costs. While there’s no onesize-fits-all solution to cut auto insurance premiums, drivers can try various strategies to save money on their policies.

• Raise your policy’s deductibles. Higher deductibles may sound scary to drivers, but raising the deductibles is a great way to lower the cost of auto insurance. The

auto insurance provider Progressive notes that deductibles typically range from $100 to $2,000. A driver whose policy has a $100 deductible will pay considerably more on his policy per month than a driver with a higher deductible. In fact, the Insurance Information Institute notes that drivers who increase their deductibles from $200 to $1,000 can save 40 percent or more on

One $2,000 scholarship will be offered to a high school senior; another $2,000 scholarship is available to eligible Jefferson’s Ferry employees and their dependent children.

To qualify for the scholarship, the applicant must be a new, full time student who is enrolled or intends to enroll in a nursing program. A high school GPA of 75 or 2.0 is required, along with a letter of recommendation and an essay describing the applicant’s interest in nursing. Applicants must be a resident of Coram, Centereach, Setauket (including East and South Setauket), Port Jefferson, Port Jefferson Station or Selden.

Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child.

They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders.

CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done.

Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids.

Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help.

Since 2005, CFK has given out more than 3 MILLION DOLLARS to help local Long Islanders. Here are some of the areas they’ve helped others financially: Rent, Mortgage Payments, Oil Deliveries, Utility Bills, Food, Transportation To & From Hospitals, Co-Payments, Medications & Funeral Expenses.

Contractors For Kids is local to the core. They know our Island well and they love to help locals. Their office is located in Holbrook and they have no plans of going anywhere. The

pandemic took its toll on CFK, as it did on many, but they stayed afloat and are thankful for the opportunity to continue to make a difference.

Recently, CFK helped a 12 year old boy who suffered from a traumatic brain injury. He is now blind and he has a history of Wilm’s tumor and craniotomy, among many other complications. This little boy was put into the foster system and was adopted by the nurse that fostered him. CFK was able to provide them with a special chair to hold him, car payments and rent!

Additionally, they assisted a 6 year old girl with Fibromatosis soft tissue sarcoma who lives in Holbrook. Due to intensive Chemo treatments, her mom had to stay home with her. CFK helped with several month’s mortgage payments, water and electric bills, as well as car payments to help keep this family afloat during difficult times!

So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have filled out their Application For Assistance, they will get in touch with you to see how they can be of help!

Want to help make a difference? You can do so by learning their mission, spreading awareness, referring families to CFK, distributing handouts/electronic materials and representing CFK at health fairs, open enrollment or employee meetings.

How To Get A Wi-Fi Enabled Car

Why Is Tire Rotation So Important?

Wi-Fi capabilities. This means you will not need an extra device to access the internet. However, you will probably need to sign up for an additional data plan through whatever service the car manufacturer uses to offer Wi-Fi capability or through your mobile phone carrier.

AllConnect. com says Wi-Fi plans for vehicles start as low as $10 per month and may include unlimited data. Furthermore, car Wi-Fi is often different from a mobile hotspot because it is likely to offer better connection and more security while preserving mobile

data and phone battery life. Cars that are not equipped with Wi-Fi can have it as an add-on with an installed wireless vehicle router. These routers range from $200 to $600 and are professionally installed.

Having Wi-Fi in a vehicle is handy when taking road trips or when work requires internet connectivity. Dedicated vehicle internet can help save on mobile phone data plans and battery life. Plus, people increasingly staying at home can rely on a vehicle’s Wi-Fi system as a back-up should their home internet go down.

The Benefits Of Wearing Seat Belts The importance of wearing seat belts in vehicles has resonated with drivers and passengers across the globe. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the national seat belt use rate in passenger vehicles in 2019 was 90.7 percent. And despite their simplicity, particularly when compared to

the various other technologies available in modern vehicles, seat belts remain an incredibly effective device against injury and even death, though only when drivers and their passengers remember to engage them. For example, the NHTSA notes that seat belts saved an estimated 14,955 lives in 2017 alone.

Unfortunately,

the NHTSA also reports that 47 percent of the 37,133 people killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2017 were not wearing seat belts. Studies have indicated that front seat riders in cars who wear their seat belts can reduce their risk of fatal injury by 45 percent, while front seat riders in trucks can reduce their risk for fatal injury by 60 percent.

Vehicle owners need to keep maintenance on the mind to ensure their cars and trucks are operating at peak capacity. Various components should be checked and serviced at key intervals. Oil changes and fluid topoffs are part of routine maintenance, but it can be easy to forget about other important parts of the vehicle, including tires.

Rotating tires is vital to their upkeep.

Bridgestone Tires advises that tire rotation involves routinely repositioning a vehicle’s tires in specific patterns from front to back and side to side.

According to Big O Tires, the front tires tend to wear on the outside edges because the tire leans over when a driver turns a corner. The rear tires just follow the front ones, so they usually wear more evenly. By leaving tires in place, the outside edges on the front tires will wear

down much faster than the rest and those tires will need to be replaced sooner. Rotation may be required by tire warranties. Rotation also keeps the tires working properly.

Experts generally advise tire rotation every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, even if they do not show any signs of wear. It is challenging to determine if weather treads are uneven or how much wear has been sustained just by looking at them. Rotating tires can prolong the life of tires and decrease how frequently they need to be replaced.

Rotating tires keeps the tread depth uniform and helps maintain traction and consistent handling across all four tires.

Bridgestone says the tire rotation pattern that is best for a particular vehicle depends on the type of tire being used. Patterns are recommended by the standardizing body of the tire industry, called The Tire and Rim Association,

Inc. Individuals can consult with professional mechanics about the proper way to rotate tires.

Many tire manufacturers or automotive stores that have sold customers tires also will do tire rotations — some free of charge.

In addition to proper traction, minimizing uneven tire treads causes the vehicle to be more balanced, advises Wrench, a mobile auto repair and maintenance company.

This enables the driver to have more control even when roads are slippery.

Many auto service centers will then align and balance tires after they have been rotated. At this time the mechanic will likely check brakes as well, since it is easy to see and reach them when the tires are off.

Tire rotation is an important component of vehicle maintenance.

Check with a qualified automotive professional to see if it’s time to have your vehicle’s tires rotated.

Connecting to Wi-Fi is typically easy at home, but what about when you’re in the car?

Wi-Fi-enabled vehicles are becoming hot commodities for drivers.

There are various ways to access the internet in a car. Drivers can buy an add-on device.

Even mobile gadgets that aren’t specifically designed for vehicle applications can be easily connected. The devices plug into the 12-volt accessory outlet. OBD II devices connect to a car’s OBD II port. This is most often located below the steering wheel.

Mechanics use this port to run digital vehicle diagnostics. However, it also can be used to create a Wi-Fi hot spot with an OBD device.

Another option is to use a smartphone to create a mobile hotspot through a cellular data plan. Anyone in the car can then tether their phones or other devices to the smartphone to access the internet.

April 14th marks the 366th anniversary of Brookhaven Town Founder’s Day. It is also the day Anna Smith Strong, Culper Spy Ring participant and wife of Selah Strong, was born two hundred and eight-one years ago.

In May of 1780, while British forces were still in control of Long Island, Selah Strong was elected President of the Trustees of the Town of Brookhaven, a position equal to today’s Brookhaven Town Supervisor. He continued to be elected president through 1797. He also served as first judge of Suffolk County. In 1790, President George Washington made a brief tour of Long Island.

Applications Are Now Open for Suffolk Legislature’s 2021 Page Program Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer Rob Calarco has announced that applications are being accepted for the 2021 Page Program.

Approaching its seventh year, the legislature’s Page Program is an immersive summer internship program that gives college students the opportunity to learn about county government and public service. The 2021 program will run for 12 weeks, beginning with an orientation on May 21 and culminating in a graduation ceremony on Aug. 6.

Nearly 30 students participated in last year’s program, which went fully remote as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year’s program will be remote as well, offering students the ability to participate virtually via Zoom.

“This summer program has been designed to provide the guidance and training students need to become the next generation of leaders,” said Presiding Officer Calarco. “They will see firsthand what it is like to work in government and develop leadership skills that build confidence. Last year’s remote program was tremendously successful, and we look forward to once again providing a meaningful experience for our Pages.”

Participants will connect with legislators, elected officials, and policymakers from throughout Suffolk County, participate in an online mock legislature, and attend weekly virtual workshops on leadership and personal development.

Students will also be tasked with developing service projects that address one of the many issues presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Page Program was created by the Suffolk County Legislature Office of the Presiding Officer in 2015 to provide students with a rewarding and educational experience in local government. Several

former Pages return to serve as “Senior Pages” who help organize activities and guide the new class.

Logan Mazer, of Coram, who served as a Page in last year’s class and was elected by his peers to serve as the Page Presiding Officer during the mock legislative meetings, described being in the program as an “invaluable experience.”

“Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, we were able to come together and experience some of the ins-and-outs of county government through hands-on experience,” Mazer said. “I highly encourage anyone who is interested in the policy process, government, or bettering their community to apply for this program.

The people you will meet and lessons you will learn are sure to stick with you for years to come.”

Ever wonder about an artist’s creative process?

You can watch first hand over the next several weeks as local artist Kevin McEvoy paints Jazz Loft founder Tom Manuel’s portrait via a series of livestream events.

McEvoy was recently awarded a grant from New York State, through the @ Hntington Arts Council for the project. Viewers can tune into McEvoy’s Facebook page to hear McEvoy explain the portrait painting process from beginning to end and hear some music and conversation.

“Musicians and artists share so much in common when it comes to the creative process,” said Manuel. “It’s

no wonder that throughout history artists cross pollinated with musicians, writers and the likes. It is so exciting to be collaborating with Kevin McEvoy on this project and to be engaging in conversation regarding our creative processes, what we share in common, as well as being inspired in the moment, learning from each other and reaching together for new levels.”

Tom will also be taking viewers on a mini tour of the Loft and talking about some key moments in Jazz history. The painting will be on display at the Jazz Loft when it is finished.

Livestream will be available for viewing both on

Instagram and Facebook, link going live at five on Fridays.

Rocky Point Middle School continues to engage in activities to keep students feeling connected and share positive energy throughout the building. They recently held a Spirit Week and adopted the theme of “Chasing the Bright Side” as a way to show the school’s commitment to embrace the good that is often overlooked in these challenging times. Art teacher Cara Buonconsiglio shared the idea with students and dozens of them participated in a T-shirt design contest to highlight the theme. Sixth grader Torianna Guisti’s design was chosen as the winner.

Torianna designed

and created a motto, “Always|Shine|Bright,” which surrounds a bright, shining light bulb, capturing the essence of “Chasing the Bright Side.” Torianna’s design will be featured on T-shirts and masks that are being sold through the Rocky Point PTA. “It is sometimes hard to choose only one winner for a visual arts contest since there is so much amazing talent to choose from at Rocky Point Middle School,” Ms. Buonconsiglio said. “While we had many logo entries to choose from, Torianna set herself apart from the rest with her amazing, oneof-a-kind piece. Her talent, creativity and hard work

that she always puts into her artwork is evident.”

According to Principal James Moeller, the Rocky Point Middle School Student Council and Shared Decision-Making team have prioritized the importance of making the school even more inviting and collegial.

“Torianna demonstrated extraordinary creativity and has inspired us all with her efforts to try to stay positive,” he added.

Torianna, who counts spending time with her family and friends among what makes her most happy, added that, “Covid has made this a tough year and I wanted to help make people feel happy.”

After a number of virtual meetings and after only practicing in person since February, the Rocky Point Middle School robotics team has qualified for the Long Island championship to be held remotely on April 17. The theme of the competition this year is “Replay,” in which teams were tasked with ways to keep people active. The team’s research project, while working with the Middle School coding club, was creating an app that would interface with exercise equipment at Planet Fitness to confirm achievement goals to earn

rewards – thus helping to maintain members’ New Year’s resolutions throughout the year.

The Port Jefferson Middle School Science Olympiad Team placed first at the Suffolk County Regional Division B Science Olympiad Competition, held as a virtual competition this year. Students in grades 6-9 competed against 22 teams in events which tested their study skills in the categories of biology, chemistry, earth science, engineering, physics and scientific problem-solving.

The students had a dominant performance and received medals in every single event. The team will compete on April 17 in the virtual state competition.

The team is coached

by Mr. Adam Bouchard, the Middle School Earth Science and Science 8 teacher.

“Every student was highly motivated and showed a lot of hard work in preparing for their events despite the circumstances and hardships to overcome,” Mr. Bouchard said. “I applaud their efforts and cannot wait to see how they do at the state level.”
