The Memory Project
R
ocky Point High School art students in Greg Armine’s drawing and painting class helped to create lasting keepsakes for children halfway around the world through an initiative called The Memory Project. Twenty-two students from the class volunteered for the project, which called for them to create a self-portrait of a child from Madagascar based on a submitted photograph. They each donated $15 toward the project.

Random Rambles By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been a rough year. Less than four months in and, well, I know many people who are already looking for a do-over. Sure, every period of time has its ups and downs, highs and lows. But honestly, since the moment the ball dropped in Times Square this past New Year’s Eve, it seems that everything began falling right along with it. At least it’s Spring. There is something uplifting about sunshine-filled afternoons and flower blossoms that does bring a smile to the face, however fleeting it may be. And of course, those sunworshippers among us have to be looking forward to
summer and beach outings and barbeques. But until then… It’s April. April 15th, to be exact, as I write these words. Tax Day (although, technically speaking, we were graced with a few extra days tacked on to the filing deadline this year). The Easter Bunny has come and gone. Baseball diamonds are abuzz with activity. Pretty soon, school will be out of session and the parks and pools will be flooded with families having fun. And so it goes. From dawn until dusk, one season into the next, day after day, week after week, month after month; until, before you know it, a decade has passed in the blink of an eye. In just a couple of
weeks, I will be celebrating my 11th year as editor and columnist at this very paper. How much has changed in that span of time… The best thing we can do – the only thing, really – is to embrace each day, with all its nuances, and appreciate whatever it may bring into our respective lives. The list of things beyond our control is endless; the key to happiness lies in how we react to them, what we learn from them, and how we use them to better ourselves as individuals. I’m no philosopher, but that much I’ve picked up in my 33 years roaming this planet. Here’s wishing everyone a brighter tomorrow… and the day after… and the day after…

Miller Place School District’s North Country Road Middle School (NCRMS) team recently placed in the Middle School Science Bowl hosted by Brookhaven National Laboratory. The Science Bowl is an academic competition
where middle school students answer questions on topics including earth science, physical science, life science, math and general science. The team of five students from North Country Road Middle School won the first round of the
competition, and proudly took home certificates for their participation. Students and faculty at NCRMS greatly enjoyed the experience and plan to send two teams to the Science Bowl next year.
SCIENCE BOWL - Five students from North Country Road Middle School recently competed in the Middle School Science Bowl at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The students learned a great deal about earth science, physical science, life science, math and general science.

I remember angles lots of angles shoulders, elbows, jaw and Old Spice. I remember a voice like gravel angular, uneven, an instantly soothing like water spilling over rocks. I remember a well worn Yankee cap and sudsy beer, lots of it the ensuing brawl with Tess always capped with laughter. I remember that laughter honest boundless and everywhere the sly stealthy humor the genial ready wink. I remember licorice and Santa Clauses sundaes and Church stained glass and collection baskets lots of those. I remember the end with countless living tears I remember a man like a blanket embracing, healing channeling life. I remember love I remember my grandfather.

Students enrolled in the Academy at Bixhorn Technical Center Plumbing and Heating Program learn the basics of installing, servicing, and repairing domestic sanitation systems, water heaters, and home heating units. Teacher Frank Esposito says that handson applications allow for practical learning experiences. As the students build their skills and train on the latest technology, they look to secure employment.
Recently, Esposito took the students to the Plumbers Local #200 of the United Association in Bohemia. They were given a tour and explored career opportunities available through the union. Esposito said, “The Plumbers Union offers apprenticeship and journeymen training programs. Students graduating from my class will have an advantage because they are learning fundamental skills. If they get accepted into an
apprenticeship program, their skills will increase because they will be working with and learning from the best trained contractors.” Students in the Plumbing and Heating Program have the option of taking the National Center for Construction Education Research (NCCER) exam and are placed on the NCCER’s National Registry. The registry provides valuable industry credentials.

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office has created two Safe Transaction Zones designed to help protect citizens from various crimes associated with online transactions including robberies, thefts and assaults. Future planning will expand this initiative to additional locations. The safe transaction zones are located at the Sheriff’s Office, 100 Center Drive in Riverhead and at our Yaphank Facility, (address). Both are clearly marked with red and white signs and are in full view of on duty Deputy Sheriffs. Over time these areas will be enhanced with video cameras. Citizens are encouraged to use the marked areas as a place to meet and conduct transactions that require in-person exchanges of online purchases. Sheriff’s deputies will not participate in the exchanges or act as official witnesses in transactions. Most purchase agreements and transactions are civil matters. However with deputies nearby, the area will be safer for buyers and sellers and will deter criminals who want commit crimes against others. Citizens are encouraged to use the area during daylight hours and will not have to schedule an appointment with the Sheriff’s Office. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind when conducting such transactions: • Do not go to a transaction alone • Make sure a friend or family member is aware of the transaction details • Insist on meeting in Big Bird The largest living bird is the ostrich, which can weigh 330 pounds.

R.C. Murphy Junior High School eighthgrade students in Michael Flanagan’s class shared their love of literacy with peers in a unique way this spring – by creating intricate and interactive board games. As part of an independent reading project, the
students selected a fantasy or science fiction book and created board games based on the story’s plotline. Each game featured key characters from the novels that were challenged to complete a quest or journey. Students created individual playing pieces and cards referencing what

Boards of Learning happened to the characters in the books. Peers enjoyed learning about their classmates chosen books by taking turns playing the different board games, which highlighted such stories as “Woven,” “Doomspell” and “Stranger in a Strange Land.”
On April 11th, Supervisor Romaine and the Town Board hosted the fourth annual Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service event in Brookhaven Town Hall. At the event, volunteers from throughout the Town who are Foster Grandparents and Senior
Citizen Companions were honored with Certificates of Appreciation. The annual Mayors Day of Recognition highlights the impact of volunteer service on the community. In Brookhaven Town, 54 Foster Grandparent volunteers serve in 15 schools. There are

Newest Inductees During a ‘tapping ceremony,’ on April 12th, 59 Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students learned they have been accepted into the National Honor Society and were invited to take part in a formal, candlelighting ceremony on April 21st.
As part of the annual ritual, each student was ‘tapped’ on the shoulder by a current National Honor Society member and led to the multipurpose room, where they were greeted by family and friends for a celebration. During the ceremony
later this month, the new inductees will officially be inducted after they each pledge to uphold the purpose and principles of the society, including scholarship, leadership, service and character.

The Gillespie Meeting Room, located on the upper level of the Carriage Museum at the Long Island Museum is commemorated in memory of Doris and Kingsley Gillespie. It includes a stage and seating for approximately 125 people. The room provides space for lectures, music concerts, seminars, exhibits and other special events, a lasting tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Gillespie’s interests and the family’s professional ties to the field of communication. Doris Kenyon was born in 1900 in Brooklyn, but as a child spent her summers in Old Field. In the 1930s, Old Field became her yearround home. She had a lifelong affection for the Three Village area and it is appropriate that a part of the Carriage Museum is commemorated in her name. She was married to Kingsley Gillespie, a graduate of the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who had begun his career as plant manager and research director of the Stamford Rubber Supply Company. In 1941 he made a career change, becoming publisher of a Connecticut newspaper, The Advocate of Stamford. In 1957 he also became publisher of the Greenwich Time. Mr. Gillespie was a former owner of Stamford radio station WSTC. The Gillespies maintained homes in Stamford and Old Field and were involved in community activities in both areas. They were generous benefactors. In retirement years, they were able to spend more time at their Naples, Florida home. Mrs. Gillespie is remembered fondly for her love of animals and her interest in riding. Neighbors saw her often on the roads of Old Field as she rode horses, a pony, and even a dog cart. Mr. and Mrs. Gillespie both died at their Florida residence, he in 1984 and she in 1986. A daughter, Joan, a United States Foreign Service officer, died in Tunisia in 1959. Their son Kenyon died in March of 2015.

Increasing Awareness In recognition of April being National Autism Awareness Month, Rocky Point Schools participated in an awareness campaign to promote understanding of the condition. Students and staff members districtwide
kicked off the campaign on April 1st by wearing “genes” and the color blue to school. Additionally, Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School students in Gina Fabian and Jamie Behringer’s class worked diligently
during their free time to create pins for Autism awareness month. They distributed them to all the staff members at JAE, who are proudly wearing them for the duration of the month.
Painting Memories Rocky Point High School art students in Greg Armine’s drawing and painting class helped to create lasting keepsakes for children halfway around the world through an initiative called The Memory Project. Twenty-two students from the class volunteered for the project, which called for them to create a self-portrait of a child from Madagascar based on a submitted photograph. They each donated $15 toward the project, which was used to cover the
supplies for the portrait and its delivery to the recipients. “This was my first time participating and I felt this was a great opportunity for students to give back to our global community through their love of making art,” said Mr. Armine. “What a wonderful thought that a portrait that you have created has traveled halfway around the world and is now a keepsake for a child who has very little.” According to their website, The Memory Project is a nonprofit
organization that collaborates with art teachers and students to create portraits for youth around the world who have faced substantial challenges, such as neglect, abuse, loss and extreme poverty. Their intent is to help the children feel valued and important, to know that many people care about their well-being, and that the portraits will act as meaningful pieces of personal history in the future.

A sea of green and gold blanketed the gymnasium at Ward Melville High School when Nassakeag Elementary School hosted their second annual Sports Spectacular, which raised $4,500 to support Contractors for Kids. During the event,
members of the school’s staff participated in fun sporting events in a gold versus green format while more than 400 spectators cheered on. Nassakeag sixth-grade teacher Sue Safranek once again organized the night. It not only aimed to

FORUM SPEAKER - On April 5th, Councilwoman Jane Bonner was a guest speaker at the Rocky Point Drug Free Community Forum held in the Rocky Point High School auditorium. The “standing room only” crowd heard a discussion on how the use of drugs in our suburban communities is skyrocketing and emphasized that parents need to recognize the problem, be aware of the warning signs, and most importantly, communicate with their children.

Art Honors Star is of outstanding character and has given back to the world at large. This year the group chose legendary film actress and humanitarian, Audrey Hepburn. They honored Ms. Hepburn by creating individual artistic pieces that when placed together silhouetted her well-known face.
Gelinas’ NJAHS has 28 members and each had a hand in creating this. The completed mural is currently being displayed in the art department hallway and will be placed on permanent display within the school over the summer.

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION - Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker was honored to introduce the Barbershop Harmony Society as they recently celebrated their 78th Anniversary at the Rose Caracappa Senior Center in Mount Sinai. Founded in 1938 by Owen C. Cash, the society promotes and preserves barbershop-style a capella music. The North Brookhaven chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, affectionately known as the Harbormen Chorus, provides chorus and quartet performance throughout Suffolk County.

Seeking New Volunteers Long Island volunteer firefighters, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY), fire officers, public safety officials, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and other elected officials will clang the bell for new recruits Thursday, April 21st, at 11 a.m. at the Nassau County Firefighters Museum & Education Center, on Museum Row in Garden City. FASNY President Robert McConville will kick off Nassau and Suffolk Counties’ sixth annual RecruitNY campaign designed to help increase volunteer membership. The event, to which area firefighters have been invited to attend in dress uniform, and which will showcase fire rigs and apparatus from area departments, is a public service outreach to highlight the need for more volunteer firefighters. Over the last few years, due to various factors
including the state of the economy, family and financial responsibilities and current volunteers aging, retiring, and moving out of state, there has been a reduction in volunteer first-responder numbers. During the RecruitNY 2016 Open House Weekend, Saturday, April 23rd, and Sunday, April 24th, volunteer fire departments across New York State will open their doors and fire truck bays to local residents as part of the statewide volunteer firefighter recruitment effort. Fire departments will conduct tours of their firehouses and fire apparatus, allow visitors to try on turnout gear, and provide visitor activities throughout the firehouse. Members will discuss the rewards and responsibilities that come with being a volunteer firefighter, as well as conduct demonstrations, answer questions, and let visitors know how to go about joining their fire
department.
