A Love of Music Melville student was pared with a William Floyd student during the event and shared a music stand while rehearsing. The two groups, which included a total of 62 studentmusicians, studied four different pieces of music during the workshop.

Throughout the event, the pairs enjoyed learning

about each other’s shared passion for music, the types of pieces they have performed and different techniques for performance.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone released the following statement in response to the FDA releasing the agency’s proposed regulations restricting e-cigarette sales.

“New enforcement actions are needed immediately to curb the vaping epidemic that has taken our youth by storm.

While we have taken swift action in Suffolk to crack down on the illegal sale of e-cigarettes to minors by increasing penalties and continue to implement new educational programs, the time has come for the FDA to step in and regulate these sweet, fruit flavored e-cigarettes that are targeting our young ones and causing serious damage to their health.”

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for!

If you would like to be a part of their mission and volunteer with this organization, you can! The following volunteer positions are available: Boat Crew Members, Boat Captains, Boat Maintence and Repair, Office Assistants, Building and Grounds Maintenance and Repair and Festival Booth Volunteers.

Also, if you are interested in donating to their organization, you can safely and securly donate on their website when you click the ‘donate’ tab.

This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, OceanBay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more.

They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season.

They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years!

Your Thoughts Are Making You Stressed “Start by doing what’s necessary. Then, do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” - St. Francis of Assisi Your life isn’t making you stressed. Your thoughts are making you stressed. If I had a dollar for every time I heard a friend, family member, business associate or a co-worker tell me they are stressed, I’d probably be retired.

When a lot of tasks are on your plate at once, the human mind will fall in line with the perceived chaos of multiple deadlines or obligations, and will begin to scramble and spin around kind of like a dog frantically chasing its own tail. Have you ever witnessed a dog spin in circles chasing its own tail and going nowhere?

It’s amusing and pity-inducing all at once, as you muse about what a futile effort it is. The dog is moving quickly, expending a great deal of energy and yet going nowhere.

That is exactly what we do when we allow the mind to rapidly

spin in circles with stress. We are expending a great deal of energy and going nowhere.

It is not the ten deadlines or laundry list of errands or looming term paper or sales quota that is making you stressed. It is your thoughts about said events that are making you stressed. Things, events and responsibilites are neither good nor bad; they just are. It is how we frame them within our emotional landscape and nervous system that determines how they make us feel.

Many an afternoon, my son comes home from school declaring that he has too much to get done and it simply isn’t possible. It is true that he typically has some math homework, language arts homework, reading and guitar practice to juggle. When he does become overwhelmed, I let him know that it takes far more energy to “be overwhelmed” than it does to simply complete his tasks. Let that sink in.

The truth is, the human mind has a tendency to underestimate the amount of time we have

and overestimate the amount of things that need to be done. We typically have more time than we perceive, more competency and stamina than we give ourselves credit for and less to actually do than our imagination would have us believe.

When there is a storm of activity whirling around me, I keep it exactly there - around me, but not within me. The wind may blow my leaves around, but my trunk remains still. I know that nothing can be accomplished with chaotic energy, nor can it be accomplished by attempting to tackle everything at once. I make a mental note of what needs to get done, take each task one at a time, and work briskly yet attentively. I mentally pat myself on the back as each task is completed and crossed off my list. When others bring their frenetic energy into my sphere and express their own sense urgency, I let them know that I hear them and I understand the importance it has to them.

I know that as I complete my tasks, one by one, all will get done and all will be well.

Turkey Meatloaf Your Family Will Love

This week we're sharing a recipe for turkey meatloaf that requires only a handful of ingredients and is sure to please the entire family.

Preparation In a large mixing bowl, combine ground turkey, Lipton onion soup mix, eggs, water, ketchup and bread crumbs.

Use 2 lbs. of chopped turkey meat for a larger gathering of four or more people, or 1 lb. for three or less people.

The below is the full recipe for 2 lbs. of turkey meat. For 1 lb. simply cut all ingredients in half.

Fold, knead and mix together using your hands (don't forget to wash hands after handling raw turkey meat). With a large serving spoon, scoop mixture into baking pan and evenly spread out, shaping into a loaf shape.

What You Will Need 2 lbs. of Ground Turkey 1 packet of Lipton Onion Recipe Soup & Dip Mix 2 Whole Eggs 3/4 Cup Water 1/3 Cup Ketchup 3/4 Cup Plain Dry Bread Crumbs

Place pan onto center rack of oven and bake for one hour. Let stand for ten minutes and serve with your favorite sides. Enjoy!

During the state contest, Ward Melville’s talented team of students received top 10 placements in 17 out of 23 events, with notable performances in Fossils, Wright Stuff, Forensics, Astronomy, Code Busters and Disease Detectives.

“Qualifying for the Science Olympiad National Tournament is always Ward Melville’s primary objective and driving motivation,” said coach Jenny Serigano.

“In the past several years, our team has experienced a tumultuous mix of

stunning victories and heart-wrenching defeats.

After two years in a row of coming in third place and narrowly missing our goal of qualifying for Nationals, our Ward Melville team achieved a second-place victory and beat out long-time rivals from Fayetteville-Manlius.”

Ward Melville’s team will be making a triumphant return to the National Tournament for the first time in three years and will be competing against the best 60 teams in the nation on May 31 at Cornell University.

After winning the Eastern Long Island Regional Tournament in January and breaking a regional record for best overall score, Ward Melville High School’s Science Olympiad team competed against the top 55 teams in New York at the 2019 New York State Science Olympiad Tournament, where they clinched second place and earned a bid to the national competition.

Humanitarian Organization Students in the Port Jefferson School District International Club set out to raise funds for the humanitarian organization Plan International. Along with advisers, English as a Second Language teacher Jennifer Walling and French teacher Heather Marshak, the students

came up with a fun way to help a child while also promoting school spirit.

Club members encouraged classmates to purchase a strip of tape that was to be used to help tape middle school guidance counselor Keith Buehler to a wall.

They raised $125 and

will sponsor a child from Haiti. They will be writing to the child in French and are planning to send gifts and cards throughout the school year.

“The event truly created some great school spirit,” Walling said.

Science Olympiad Team The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Science Olympiad team competed in the New York State Science Olympiad against the best teams across the state at Le Moyne College in Syracuse on March 15 and 16. They were one of only six teams from Long Island in the competition.

Accompanied by advisers and science teachers Amanda Brideson and Adam Bouchard and chaperones Danny Holland and Nicole Sklar, the team came in 25th place out of a total of 56 teams and came

home with three medals.

Sinan Ates, Chloe Andriani and Peggy Yin placed third in the Protein Modeling category; Grant Samara and Aaron Held placed fifth in the Fossils category and Reid Biondo and Aaron Held also placed fifth in the Water Quality category.

“We are extremely proud and impressed with all of the hard work our entire team has put in this year in our STEM science events,” said Brideson. “Their hard work and dedication to the Science Olympiad team shows through their

awards and standings,” added Bouchard.

A ‘Fair Lady’ Takes the Stage After months of practice and preparation, Rocky Point High School students took to the stage this March to perform the bellowed Broadway classic “My Fair Lady.”

The show depicts the journey of a poor flower seller named Eliza Doolittle as she works with a phonetics professor

to learn to speak “proper” English and become a presentable member of the high society of Edwardian London. The school’s performance was the perfect combination of comedic relief and exquisite talent, as the student-actors impressed audiences throughout each performance, including a

complimentary preview show for district’s senior citizens.

In addition to the actors on stage, the showstopping performance was supported by studentmusicians in the show’s pit orchestra as well as a dedicated team of stage crew members.

An educationally enriching experience took place for Port Jefferson Middle School students when they participated in the 2018-19 annual sixth-grade New York Mathematics League contest.

Sixth-graders Thales Cheng, Sofia Freitas, Evan Monaghan, Emily

Snyder and Colin Veit worked together on the academically oriented competition, which consisted of a variety of math topics, including algebra, geometry and problem-solving.

According to sixth-grade math teacher Megan Ryan, they enjoyed the challenge and are on a positive

path in exploring further mathematical ideas.

“This is an exceptional achievement and the students definitely benefit from the challenge by learning how to think about and solve complex problems,” Ryan said.

Blue Ocean Entrepreneur Ward Melville High School’s Business Department landed a $1,000 prize for being one of the top three schools internationally that brought in the most submissions for the 2018-19 Blue Ocean Entrepreneurship Competition. There were more than 550 student participants with 250 submissions from over 90 high schools in 26 states including nine countries.

The school’s participation in this competition was facilitated by business teacher Ilene Littman, who incorporated the contest into Ward Melville’s Marketing H classes and provided the opportunity for interested

DECA members to enter as well. In addition to their prize for most submissions, three of Ward Melville’s Blue Ocean Entrepreneurship team submissions also made it into the semi-finals/top 50 list: The AnglerPack – Grace Lin, Juri Nagata, Nancy Zhong and Julia Zhu The Perfect Gift – Courtney Lerner and Lexi Ward Crescendo – Akshay Malhotra, George Kuhen and Adeena Shahzadi The Blue Ocean competition is an international, virtual and student-founded and supported pitch competition for high school entrepreneurs. It is the

largest entrepreneurship competition in the United States based on Blue Ocean Strategy concepts, including creating new products that are first to the market and free of competition. Individuals or teams pitch their innovative business concepts via a video to experienced entrepreneurs and businesspeople.

Blue Ocean Strategy and Blue Ocean Shift are two of the most popular business books of the century and are often required reading at the country’s top colleges and universities.

One of the authors, Dr. Renée Mauborgne, will personally be visiting Ward Melville to deliver the school’s prize.
