Catholic Health Services Offers Tips On Talking To Kids About Coronavirus As part of the effort to contain the spread of coronavirus, local schools have been ordered to close for several weeks. This change in routine leads to many questions from children who want to know why they can’t attend school or spend time with their friends.

Providing answers to inquisitive youngsters can be challenging for parents,

trying to balance sharing information without unnecessarily alarming their kids.

“With schools closed and many parents working at home temporarily, children will want to know what is causing the changes to what they perceive as normal life,” said Catholic Health Services Chairman of Behavior Health Ronald

Brenner, MD. “Also, mobile technology gives many young people access to news and information, which could overwhelm them and cause anxiety.”

The New York State Office of Mental Health offers several suggestions for parents speaking to their kids about coronavirus.

- Think about and rehearse scripts for

discussing coronavirus with their children. Kids take cues from caregivers about how anxious they should be about a topic.

- Discuss the situation openly. Avoiding the topic or providing blanket responses may fuel anxiety.

- Don’t give more information then is requested.

Check to make sure your children understand your response

by asking them to repeat back what they have heard and let them know you are open to more questions.

- Help your school-aged child and adolescents set boundaries on their information flow in the same way you are setting your own boundaries.

Help them identify factual sources of information and set appropriate intervals to check-in.

- Keep as many routines intact as possible. For children who are out of school, it is important to maintain other familiar routines such as mealtimes and bedtimes.

- Use technology to keep children in touch with a friend or older family members. This allows them to maintain connections

PSEG Long Island and the PSEG Foundation are supporting the Island Harvest Food Bank in its response to critical community needs throughout Long Island as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The mission of Island Harvest Food Bank is to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island. The PSEG Foundation provided the Island Harvest Food Bank a grant of $45,000 to address rising food

Easter Sunday dinners are a tradition for many families, and a great number of those families enjoy lamb on Easter Sunday. Lamb is a significant symbol of Easter because Jesus is often referred to as the “Lamb of God.” Additionally, lamb was sacrificed during the Jewish Passover and subsequently became symbolic of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross.

This year it may be possible to combine a love for lamb with a love for grilling. This recipe for “Grilled Rosemary Lamb Chops” from Peggy Knickerbocker’s “Simple Soirées: Seasonal Menus for Sensational Dinner Parties” (Stewart, Tabori & Chang) gives Easter dinner hosts the opportunity to prepare the meal over an open flame, adding

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students had a stimulating learning experience when they welcomed Long Island University professor and motivational speaker Perry Williams to talk about his life experiences and career path.

A retired NFL player who was with the New York Giants for more than a decade, Williams holds NCAA records for track and field from North Carolina State University

and is now the director of the sports management program at LIU. Williams shared encouraging stories about teambuilding, leadership and mentoring with teacher Linda Moran’s sports marketing and accounting classes. Aside from his trajectory from high school student to college athlete to professional football player with two Super Bowl championships, he

highlighted how he has used his real-world experiences to enhance his work as a college professor.

“He spoke to the students about creating opportunities for themselves and the three Ds: don’t quit, don’t get outworked and don’t be intimidated,” Moran said. “The students really enjoyed listening to his stories and how he came to be a professor at LIU.”

For the broth: 1 leftover chicken carcass, all skin and fat removed 2 Spanish onions, 1 whole and unpeeled, the other peeled and chopped 1 leek, coarsely chopped 3 celery stalks, with leaves if possible, coarsely chopped 4 bay leaves

Chicken With Matzo Dumplings - This delicious recipe for “Chicken With Matzo Dumplings” can be enjoyed during Passover or throughout the year.

Note: You can use goodquality, low-salt kosher chicken stock cubes or bouillon powder, but the recipe above for homemade broth is recommended.

For the dumplings: 7 ounces medium matzo meal (about 8 matzo sheets, ground up) 3 eggs 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon finely chopped flat-leaf parsley 3 grindings of black pepper 2 pinches of salt First, make the broth.

Put the carcass in a large pot and cover with about 21⁄2 quarts of water. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Add the vegetables, herbs and peppercorns, return to a boil, cover and simmer for 1 hour. Strain, reserving the broth.

Make the dumplings by

mixing all the dumpling ingredients together, then knead until you have a smooth dough, adding a little water if necessary.

Cover and let rest for at least 3 hours.

Using your hands, form the mixture into balls the size of apricots.

To put it all together, bring the chicken broth up to simmering point.

Drop in the dumplings and continue simmering, covered, for 30 minutes.

If you don’t have a chicken carcass, boil a whole chicken for the soup and use the meat in other dishes. Traditionally, a boiling fowl from a kosher butcher would be used.

Health note: This is the famous “Jewish penicillin” beloved of every mother and grandmother. It’s not an old wives’ tale; there’s good scientific evidence that it contains vitamins, minerals and other natural chemicals that are antibacterial and immune-boosting.

In addition, nutrients and valuable plant chemicals are extracted from the vegetables and herbs during the cooking process, most of which end up as active ingredients in the finished soup.

Passover is a Jewish festival that commemorates the story of Exodus. In that story, ancient Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt, and men, women and children of Jewish heritage celebrated that liberation during Passover, a seven or eight day festival that is one of the more widely observed Jewish holidays.

On Easter Sunday, four women, including Mary Magdalene, went to Christ’s tomb to anoint his body with spices and oils. They found the tomb was empty and were met with an angel who told them that Jesus had been raised from the dead. A biblical account in John 20:14-16 indicates that Mary Magdalene was the first to speak with the risen Jesus. She mistakes Jesus for a gardener and says to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.”

Suffolk County Council (BSA)’s representatives participated at the annual New York State of the State in Albany on February 24, 2020. The youth members and their adult volunteer leaders of the Scouts BSA Troops participated in this event and were given a tour of the NYS Capitol.

The scouts presented the legislature with an update on how well scouting is serving the Suffolk County community and each of the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Explorers had a chance to speak to the NYS representatives as they shared this information.

The 19 youth members and their ten adult Scouting leaders (among others scouts from NY State) had a lunch in the Legislative Building and took a photo with Senator Martinez following a tour of the Capitol Building.

The Scouts and Adult leaders listened to New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, as well as Senator John Flanagan and Senator Monica Martinez speak about their support for the Scouting

movement and the impact that Scouting has had on their various jurisdictions over the years.

During the ceremonies at the NYS Assembly, the scouts were recognized when they presented the State of the Boy Scouts in Suffolk County Council (BSA). They presented on the state of Scouting in all of New York - youth members served, community hours given, and projects completed for community organizations. In addition, youth heard from leaders about the importance of of community service and how being actively involved will serve them throughout their lives.

Youth had a chance to meet and greet and take photos with various leaders.

Explained Eagle Scout Michael VanLoon of Troop 125 (Commack), “I did not speak to the assembly, but the people that did get the opportunity to speak spoke about the opportunities that Scouting has provided them, such as camping and developing citizenship in a way that many of their peers had never

been able to experience.

Additionally, one young lady that spoke was able to do the same activities that her brother had been able to do through his own troop, once Scouting had recently opened up to girls across the country.”

The teens included members of the Girlonly and Boy-only Scout Troops, Cub Scout Packs, and the Middle Island Fire Department’s Co-Ed Explorer Post 9515. In addition to the presentation to the State Legislature, Eagle Scout Aiden Donnelly of Troop 362 (Centereach) was presented with the Silver Badge Hornaday Award.

Eagle Scout Michael VanLoon of Troop 125 (Commack), representing the Order of the Arrow (the National BSA Honor Society), additionally said “It’s great to see that our state officials continue to show their support for Scouting as we keep the Scouting program alive and strong in Suffolk County.”

Port Jefferson Students Learn Real-Life Applications Of Nuclear Energy Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students heard about real-world applications of what they are learning in the classroom when they welcomed guest speaker U.S. Navy nuclear machinist mate Travis Coots to speak about nuclear energy.

After sharing his Navy work experiences and travels all over the world – including Australia, Japan and Scotland – the Advanced Placement Environmental Science students and teacher Jonathan Maletta listened

to Coot’s presentation and insights about the science behind nuclear power and renewable energy, which are topics covered in the laboratory-based course.

His talking points included Pascal’s Law, the steps to nuclear power and the process of nuclear fission that occur in a nuclear energy plant.

Maletta thanked Coots for sharing his knowledge and expertise with his students, stating that the visit was a great complement to the AP Environmental Science curriculum, in which

students learn the scientific principles, concepts and methodologies required in understanding interrelationships in the natural world, as well as identifying and analyzing environmental problems and examining alternative solutions to prevent or resolve them. Through Coots’ presentation students also gained an understanding of potential job opportunities related to nuclear energy within the military and private sectors.

BRUSHING UP ON DENTAL HYGIENE - In honor of National Children’s Dental Health month, Arrowhead Elementary School prekindergarten classes brushed up on proper dental hygiene techniques with the help of a visiting hygienist from KIDDSMILES Pediatric Dentistry. During the workshop, the students discussed the importance of steering clear of sugary drinks and candy, as well as ensuring that individuals brush for two minutes, two times a day and floss regularly. Tammy, the hygienist, also used an oversized puppet to further demonstrate the technique as well as demonstrate what a traditional visit to the dentist includes. North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only.

Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption.

The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time.

We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes.

As always, the animals on the NSALA Port Washington campus are being well-cared for by our devoted staff.

In addition to finding homes for more than 110 canines, some of whom were from our recent Mill Dog rescue (we saved 100 dogs and puppies from deplorable

conditions with some going to our area shelter partners,) we have also placed more than 30 animals into foster homes.

During this time, the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center will remain open to see sick patients and emergency cases only.

While we are doing adoptions by appointment, NSALA’s Adoption Center is temporarily closed to the general public in accordance with New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s statewide directives and to control the number of people in the Adoption Center at any one time.

How Does The New Coronavirus Affect You And Your Pets?

Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19.

This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak.

To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even

your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? The CDC recommends that you restrict contact with pets and other animals just as you would with people. Ask another member of your

household to care for your pets while you are sick. If you must do it yourself, wash your hands before and after you interact and wear a facemask. The toughest part for pet lovers is that you must remember that you really should not be petting, snuggling, or sharing kisses or food with your pet!
