Minnesauke Students Display Big Hearts During Annual Fundraiser

Minnesauke Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District raised $20,285 in this year’s Kids Heart Challenge sponsored by the American Heart Association. This makes Minnesauke one of the top donor schools on Long Island and in New York State.

During physical education class, students learned the importance of heart health and the things they can do to keep their hearts, bodies and muscles healthy. They participated

in several activities encouraging healthy heart habits. The fundraiser was led by physical education teacher Alaina Maletta, who has a close connection to the cause.

“The American Heart Association is important to me because I was born with congenital heart disease and have undergone two open heart surgery procedures,” she said. “I was overwhelmed with the amount of support for this year’s fundraiser and how after hearing my

story, the students were so passionate and eager to raise money to help other children born with congenital heart disease to get the care and resources that they need.”

More than 180 Minnesauke Elementary School students took part in the fundraiser. In the five years the building has participated in the Kids Heart Challenge, this was the most money that has ever been raised.

Port Jefferson School District Offers Summer Music Camp

The Summer Music Camp at Port Jefferson is now open for registration. This exceptional program provides an enjoyable and positive opportunity for beginning and advanced students to enhance their musical studies while meeting new friends and playing music together and offers several levels of musical training classes, including beginning band

and string. There are also more advanced classes for current elementary and middle school band and string instrumentalists.

The camp will take place from July 31-Aug. 10 at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School with times varying depending on experience levels.

Offered by the Port Jefferson School District music and fine arts

department, this year the camp offers beginner instrumental classes for current grade 2 and grade 3 students. There are also a number of scholarships available.

The majority of renovations on Remodeling Magazine’s list of the best investments are exterior renovations, making this area of a home a particular point of interest for homeowners. The only interior project that cracked the Top 10 ROI for projects was a minor midrange kitchen

remodel.

Exterior renovations perhaps add the most bang for your buck because they’re not only functional but also because they add immediate curb appeal. Much in the way it has been said people eat with their eyes first — which is why chefs spend so much time on elaborate plating — buyers will judge a property by how it looks when they arrive, even before they’ve stepped inside a home. In essence, home buyers often judge a book by its cover. A worn exterior may indicate to potential buyers that the home was not maintained, however false that assumption may be.

It’s important for homeowners to consider all factors before beginning a renovation. Certain projects offer a stronger return on investment than others, and that’s a significant consideration for homeowners thinking of selling their homes.

Homeowners have many options at their disposal if they want to improve their homes. A focus on the exterior can be a promising and rewarding way to direct renovation dollars.

Curb appeal has a significant impact on how a home is viewed. Manicured landscapes, updated windows and doors, and well-lit landscapes can improve the value of a home and ensure it sells quickly and above market rate.

When homeowners assess items, they may want to change, shutters can be an area of consideration. Shutters can help windows look a little less plain. In most modern residential properties, shutters are purely decorative. However, their roots lie in home protection. Originally, shutters were used in lieu of windows, so they were the only way to safeguard a home’s interior from the elements. Some shutters still offer that protection, but those typically are installed on homes in hurricane-prone areas.

Window shutters lend a finished and distinctive look to a home. When shopping for shutters, individuals can choose among various styles.

• Louvered: A louvered shutter features several wood slats that overlap each other on the same frame. A typical louvered shutter features two sets of slats separated by a center rail. Some functional louvered shutters are operational, meaning the slats

can be tilted to allow airflow. But this is something typically reserved for indoor shutters. Decorative ones have fixed slats.

• Panel: Panel shutters come in different styles. Raised panel shutters present a boxed design where rectangular features will stand out from the rest of the frame. Flat panel shutters (sometimes referred to

as shaker) have a boxed design, but those rectangles are not raised. Recessed panels are the opposite of raised panels. As their name suggests, recessed panels are set back from the rest of the frame.

• Board and batten: Board and batten shutters are formed from grouped single boards joined together with shorter

crosspieces of wood called battens. Battens are positioned horizontally or at an angle. These shutters have a more informal, rural feel.

• Bahama / Bermuda: These tropicalinspired shutters are of the louvered variety, but they’re installed from the top of the window rather than on the sides.

• Scandinavian: Scand-inavian series shutters are very decorative board and batten shutters. They feature a series of cutouts and designs.

• Combination: Some shutters offer the best of both worlds, with louvered on top and a solid panel on the bottom, or vice versa. This gives homeowners infinite options.

Shutters are available in various materials. The most common include wood, vinyl, and composite. Cedar, mahogany, and pine are commonly used woods for exterior shutters. Vinyl is more economical and lightweight, but it can be challenging to clean and does not offer the longevity of other materials. Composite shutters are durable and cost less than wood in most cases.

Color is another consideration when replacing shutters. Shutters can stand out or blend in with the siding and other architectural accents. Shutters also can flank a front door to fully complete an exterior look.

The Port Jefferson School District Board of Education approved a resolution for proposed capital bond projects at its March 14 board of education meeting. A community vote on the projects will take place as a separate proposition with the annual budget vote and trustee election on May 16.

“Cynthia Pascal: A Retrospective” Opens April 15, 2023

The Art League of Long Island announces the retrospective exhibit of Cynthia Pascal in the Jeanne Tengelsen Gallery. The opening reception takes place on Saturday, April 15, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. A celebratory remembrance introduction will be held from 6:00 –6:30, followed by light refreshments and the opportunity to enjoy the exhibition in the Gallery. The exhibition is on view through April 23, 2023

Cynthia Pascal was an American Artist, born and raised in New York. She achieved her Bachelor

of Arts, MSW, and PHD in Social Work and managed a practice as a psychotherapist for over 40 years.

Ms. Pascal studied painting with Arthur Sternberg in Old Westbury College and at the New School for Social Research in New York City. Her formal training provided a beginning structure that she soon broke from to create her own unique statement. She does not start out with a preconceived narrative when she paints and is always open to discover meaning in the process.

Her work includes abstract, expressionistic, and impressionistic styles; all of which explore the depth and complexity of human emotion using women as her primary subjects. Acrylics are her primary medium, along with oils, pastels, and clay.

Ms. Pascal’s earlier work was comprised of hardedged expressionistic paintings which made strong statements about the female in crisis;

often fearful, resigned, tremulous, but always teeming with life. Her later works depict women in control, passionate, assured and living with conviction and joy. Almost all of her paintings portray women who appear to have a reservoir of personal experience within.

Many of Ms. Pascal’s works hang in private collections. She has exhibited at The Blue Door

Gallery, The Whitman Art Gallery, The Eclectic Gallery, The North Shore County Gallery, The Universalist Church Gallery in Manhasset, and at The Bleeker and Terra Galleries.

Ms. Pascal continued to work and produce fine art which celebrated the human spirit until 2022, at the age of 92.

Established in 1955, the Art League is not-for-profit visual arts center whose mission is to provide a forum and showcase for artists of all ages and ability levels, whether through art

education in the studios, open studio time, or exhibition opportunities in the gallery and art fairs. Artwork on display in the gallery may be available for purchase. Port Jefferson Science Olympiad Team Qualifies For State Competition

The Port Jefferson Middle School Science Olympiad Team came in second place at the Suffolk County Regional Division B Science Olympiad Competition, held at Murphy Junior High School on March 11. Students from grades 6-9 competed against 28 teams in events which tested the students’ study

skills in earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, engineering and scientific problemsolving. The students did extremely well, receiving a total of 27 medals between the A, B and C teams. The Science Olympiad team will be competing on April 14 and 15 in the state competition at East Syracuse Minoa High School in

South Shore Audubon Offers Scholarships

The South Shore Audubon Society has begun accepting applications for two $1000 Environmental Scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to college juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or environmental science, or sustainable and renewable energy .

For the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of

one of the areas listed at www.ssaudubon. org/areas-we-serve.asp and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

For the Jay Koolpix, Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of Nassau County and/ or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

May 31,2023 is the deadline for submission of applications. Completed applications include a brief explanation of the

reason for applying for the scholarship and the plan to use the money, a copy of the most recent transcript of grades, and at least one letter of recommendation. Applicants may apply for both scholarships but cannot be awarded more than one.
