“New enforcement actions are needed immediately to curb the vaping epidemic that has taken our youth by storm.

While we have taken swift action in Suffolk to crack down on the illegal sale of e-cigarettes to minors by increasing penalties and continue to implement new educational programs, the time has come for the FDA to step in and regulate these sweet, fruit flavored e-cigarettes that are targeting our young ones and causing serious damage to their health.”

How Do I Top That?

After my last column expressing how much my late friend Brenna meant to me, I received an outpouring, not just from regular readers, but from Brenna’s family and friends, letting me know that the column I wrote about her touched them tremendously. Now, how do I top that?

Have you ever felt that way?

You deliver a tour de force, whatever that may be in your life or career, and now you are left with tackling your next act, only to think, “How do I top that?”

Perhaps we are not meant to compete with our last great feat, but rather to integrate it into the intricate tapestry of who we are, and trust in what comes forth from there.

Generally speaking, with an accomplishment of any kind, comes an unspoken promise of more and better accomplishments to come. Expectations rise and, with it, so does anxiety and selfconsciousness in its most literal term; an acute consciousness of the self. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard people

confess in their most candid moments that they are afraid of being exposed as a fraud, a sham, an imposter in their own life. I hear it from friends all the time.

It all comes down to, “What do I do for my next trick?” I remember a magazine interview that actress Michelle Pfeiffer gave many years back, in which she confessed that every time she stepped onto a new movie set, she was convinced that would be the time she would finally be exposed as a bad actress and she would be fired on the spot.

It’s funny, but these very human feelings can even extend to something as simple as planning your child’s birthday party. How do you top last year’s birthday party? Or will it even be on par with last year’s party? Will the apple pie you made at last year’s family gathering meet everyone’s expectations this year? Maybe you just signed a new client, and you’re wondering if your work will live up to their expectations?

So, how do we defuse this common human ailment of the fear of living up to our own

expectations, and the expectations of others? Self-judgement is born in the mind. Turn down the volume of the mind and turn up the volume of the heart. The gut should always run interference.

Some of what I write may be pure platinum, while other entries are gold, silver or even rust, depending on who you ask.

I’ve certainly gotten a few rusty emails over these months. I’ve also gotten emails of appreciation and gratitude that have touched me deeply. One thing I will always serve up is my truth. That I know I can deliver every time, without exception. Having the courage to say, “This is who I am, and this is how I feel,” is the antidote to, “How do I top that?” syndrome.

The next time you’re about to give your next presentation, create your next piece of art, cook your next meal, plan your next party or draw up your next big plans, if it feels right and it feels real, and it resonates with your heart and your gut, it’s a meaningful and worthy pursuit.

How it will be received by others is anyone’s guess.

Port Jefferson Middle School students in Janelle Bellotti sixthgrade science class had a hands-on opportunity to learn about Long Island’s watershed and non-point source pollution when Tracy Marcus, a marine youth education specialist from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, visited them.

Funded by Port Jefferson Village as part of the storm water management program, the goal was to teach the class about the local watershed, what a storm drain is and its importance, and how water pollution affects local marine life. The students discovered ways to help prevent pollution from entering the local watershed by building a small model of a storm drain to demonstrate where water goes during a rainstorm, creating pollution using water and food coloring. They

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Tianna Couch was selected as a Dr. JongPil Lee Scholarship recipient from the Long Island Mathematics Conference Board. She will be presented with a $1,500 scholarship at the introductory ceremonies for the Long Island Mathematics Conference on March 15 at the SUNY College at Old Westbury.

Citing math and statistics as favorite subjects to study, Tianna’s successful high school career is varied and interesting. She has taken numerous A d v a n c e d Placement courses, is a member of both the cross-country and track teams, is involved in student government, the Environmental Club and numerous STEM initiatives, and is a member of the National Honor Society. In addition, Tianna took a Python programming course through the Institute for Advanced Computational Science at Stony Brook University and attended the University of Connecticut precollege summer program. She is involved in Girl Scouts, held a position as an intern in a Port Jefferson Village law

office, babysits, works in a local shop as a cashier and takes part in community service activities through the high school’s Student Organization.

Tianna describes lessons she has learned from high school math teachers Christine Morgan and Dennis Christofor that have set her on a path to study statistics or data science in college.

“I learned from Mr. Christofor that you need to work hard to do well in math. This helped me gain confidence in my abilities,” she said. In Morgan’s class, she realized that there is more than one way to look at even the easiest problem. “I also learned that if you love something and work hard, success will follow.”

SUNY Educators Visit When students in Kari Costanzo’s fifth-grade class at Port Jefferson’s Edna Louise Spear Elementary School started their Living Systems science curriculum, the opportunity to investigate starlet sea anemones came to life when they worked with two scientific educators who also happen to be parents to a student in the class.

Dr. Gerald Thomsen, a professor in Stony Brook University’s Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, and Julia Tudorov-Thomsen, a

biologist and marine scientist, conducted a lab experiment with the students, in which they observed the anemones eat marine life and then cut a piece of them to investigate the regeneration process.

The students recorded their observations in a sketch pad, and Dr. Thomsen returned a week later to check out their investigative findings.

As Costanzo guided the students in what they could record, how the anemones changed shapes during the experiment and asked each of them to present

and explain their findings, she recognized that their curiosity was peeked and their enthusiasm for the unit was compounded by the professional visits.

“They all had great questions about how anemones can regenerate while other organisms cannot,” Costanzo said and as Dr. Thomsen pointed out, for scientific investigation, there are no right or wrong answers.

“As we document our work and share our research, it’s just a cool thing to show off,” he said.

Otherwise, you may waste your time and money planting flowers or vegetables only to have them zapped away by another frosty day.

Amend the soil so that it is the right consistency — just crumbling when lifting it. Soil that is too muddy after spring thaw can harden, making it difficult for plants to flourish later on in the season. Speak with representatives at a local lawn and garden center about which types of amendments you can add to your soil in your particular area, in order to enrich your soil.

Lawn and garden experts at The Home Depot suggest filling in bare patches of lawn now by mixing a few shovelfuls of soil with grass seed. Then apply this patch to the bare areas, water it, and continue to care for the entire area until the spot fills in.

Spend a day in the garage or shed tending to the lawn mower and other gardening equipment. Clean all of your tools and ensure that everything works, repairing parts as needed.

Give outdoor entertaining spaces a good scrubbing, clearing away dirt and grime that may have accumulated over winter months. Use a leaf blower to blow away any leftover leaves.

Check if your front porch, railings or decking need painting and/or staining. Tackle these projects when the weather is cooler

so everything will be ready for those peak spring days.

Think about any annuals you might want to plant in the landscape this year that will complement your existing shrubbery or perennials. Come up with a theme so that

the entire yard is cohesive.

Before homeowners know it, winter is gone and it is time to once again enjoy long days spent outdoors. Get a jump start on spring lawn prep as soon as you can.

The Charity of the Month for March is: Birthday Wishes!

Birthday Wishes is an organization whose mission is to provide birthday parties to children experiencing homelessness. There are unforunatelty 2,000 homeless children right here on Long Island, but thankfully Birthday Wishes works with 80 shelters/ transitional housing programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties to give more than 120 children a birthday celebration each month!

The Mercy Inn ~ Wyandanch The Mercy Inn is an amazing soup kitchen, located at 17 South 20th Street in Wyandanch. Learning to Be Upstanders With a powerful message to be upstanders and not bystanders, Port Jefferson middle school and high school students took part in Sandy Hook Promise’s national Call-to-Action Week from Feb. 25 – March 1.

Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr. and two deputy sheriffs visited the school for “Say Something,” two assemblies that provided students with information on how they can help the school and community by being aware of warning signs and threats, especially in social media, of individuals who may intend harm to themselves or others and to say

something to a trusted adult to get help.

With actual quotes taken from social media accounts and video re-enactments of possible tragedies, the students learned some key skills to prevent them.

They then joined together to read aloud a pledge projected on the screen to help create healthier schools, homes and communities.

Deputy Sheriff Brian Butler addressed the high school students and Deputy Sherriff Keith Hoffman addressed the middle school students and both reiterated the fact that each student has more power to prevent lifethreatening incidents than

either of them do, as many people learn about threats via social media.

“We definitely learned that we have the power to help,” said sixth-grader Braden Snow.

The two assemblies were followed by questionand-answer sessions, an additional way to engage the students with the importance of law enforcement.

Since 2000, Long Islanders Aida and Kevin Mann have worked to provide a future for some of the world’s most vulnerable children in Meru, Kenya. They volunteer much of their time with Hope Children’s Fund, a nonprofit organization that provides safety, food, clothing, health care and education to children and

young adults in Africa.

The Manns helped find and build the Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Children’s Home, which opened in Kenya in 2005. They have also been to Kenya nine times to work with the children.

On February 18th 2019, Aida and Kevin along with Linda Patterson and Kyle and Laura Spillane, traveled to Meru

to volunteer with the orphans. During their trip (on February 28th) they celebrated the birthday of their “daughter” Risper Mwendwa who turned 24. Risper was orphaned and came to their Children’s Home in 2005 and the Manns have been mentoring her since 2006. She graduated from Meru National Polytechnic with a degree

in Business Relations and now lives and works in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital!

Hope Children’s Fund is a 100% volunteer ran organization, with no employees, office or significant overhead stateside. However, they do employ individuals in Kenya to care for the children they serve.

Long Island’s Global Citizens partially by selling Kenya crafts. H.C.F. started the Meru Women’s Cooperative in 2007 and today 29 women in this cooperative are providing for their families through craft sales. Aida and Kevin sell crafts at local fairs and also do private craft parties.
