o get students thinking about college choices, the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School guidance department held a Spring Mini-College Fair on March 10th for sophomores and juniors. This year, the annual fair was expanded to accommodate more than 90 college representatives who set up information booths in the high school gym and answered questions. For her hard work as a studious student, Port Jefferson Middle School seventh-grader Kyra Sommerstad was recognized by the Rotary Club of Port Jefferson as its Most Motivated Student for the month of March.

During its March 10th meeting, the Rotary presented Sommerstad

with a certificate as her father, Ray, Principal Antonio Santana and teacher Phil Giannusa stood by her side.

“Kyra possesses an internal drive that persists in seeking to do things better,” said Giannusa.

Santana added that Sommerstad is a “fantastic student” who teachers

often speak positively of.

“She strives to keep her grades up and to learn as much as she can,” said Santana.

Aside from her academic successes, Sommerstad is an avid swimmer with the Ward Melville team and has broken team records.

She also plays basketball.

Celebration Of Languages P.J. Gelinas Junior High School students and staff celebrated foreign language week during the second week of March.

Hallways were decorated to promote the importance of learning a second language and daily announcements

highlighted the languages offered at the school.

Members of the Global Language Honor Society wore special T-shirts to mark the occasion and had the chance to create posters based on the week’s theme “Language Learning: Bridge To The

Department Of Energy sponsors this contest in an effort to encourage young Americans to pursue careers in Science and Engineering.

What began as a challenge between friends in 2000, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation head shaving event has grown into the world’s largest volunteerdriven and donor-centered fundraising program for childhood cancer research.

Since 2000, the foundation has raised more than $186 million.

There’s fun to be had this spring break with unique indoor and outdoor events for kids from 6 to 14, hosted by the Ward Melville Heritage Organization, Tuesday, April 7th through Thursday, April 9th.

“Wing Into Spring,” for 6 to 9 year olds, is an interactive program exploring birds, butterflies and insects and takes place from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at WMHO’s Educational & Cultural Center, 97P Main Street, Stony Brook Village

Center as well as outdoors within the Village. Guided by experienced naturalist, participants engage in educational activities, do fun crafts and more!

The cost is $65 pp for all three days and includes all materials.

“Nature Journaling for Kids” for 10 to 14 year olds takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at WMHO’s Ernst Marine Conservation Center located on an 88acre wetlands preserve, Trustees Road, West Meadow Creek, Stony

Brook. Day 1 will include outdoor exploration and designing their own journal; Day 2 will offer leaf, plant and color study with use of watercolors; Day 3 is all about animal investigation and drawing.

This year, the annual fair was expanded to accommodate more than 90 college representatives,

who set up information booths in the high school gym and answered questions.

Prior to meeting the college representatives, students were prepped by the guidance department on questions they should ask and how to make a good impression.

“This is a great

opportunity for students to meet representatives and discover what types of colleges are out there,” said Kerry Fallon, school counselor.

Sophomore Jackie Brown said the fair was especially helpful to her since all of the colleges, which she is interested in, were represented.

Master Class Conducted Sixth-grade Port Jefferson Middle School orchestra students honed in on their string-playing skills through a Master Class conducted by the Calidore Quartet, currently the quartet-in-residence at

Stony Brook University.

During the master class, which was held at the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School on March 9th, three members of the quartet worked with the students to fine tune to

their current music piece, Air and Caprice by Larry Clark.

The Master Class was made possible through the district’s partnership with the Staller Center and Stony Brook University.

Boat Building Tradition

Painting Memories painted a whimsical mural inspired by the children’s book “Where the Wild Things Are.” The completed piece runs alongside the kindergarten wing and features such icon scenes as young Max swinging from vines and the “wild things” he encountered after sailing to a mysterious jungle

island.

The initiative is designed to afford soon to be graduating students the chance to leave a lasting, positive mark on their school to be enjoyed by future generations. The walls of the school are filled with similar projects completed over the years.

Every Wednesday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, come see small wooden boats being built

by LISEC volunteers. You have an opportunity to see traditional and modern boat building skills in action.

On January 22nd, as part of a kickoff event to the “Great Kindness Challenge,” the school held a special ceremony announcing the grand opening of its onsite food pantry. On its first day, the pantry assisted 15 families and 71 people. The pantry is currently open every second and fourth Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

“We are proud to provide this donation to the Phillips Avenue Food Pantry and applaud the generous efforts of the school’s students, parents and staff in assisting those families in need here in Riverhead,” Mr. Gershowitz said.

At its meeting on February 25th at The BrickHouse Brewery in Patchogue, the Patchogue Rotary Club presented Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck with a check in the amount of $125,000.

The money was raised from the 45th annual Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival, which was held September 18, 2014 at the Bellport Country Club.

The event’s honoree was Bridgehampton National Bank, which was a major sponsor of the event.

Since its inception, the golf tournament has raised nearly $1.5 million for the camp. The camp

has special meaning to the Fuoco family as Beth Ann Fuoco, who has Spina Bifida, enjoyed the camp for many years. As a result, in 1969, Buddy Fuoco and the Brookhaven Italian American Club began donating all proceeds from the Fuoco Memorial exclusively to Camp PaQua-Tuck. Years later, the Rotary Club became the sponsor, and continues the tradition today, along with the Fuoco family.

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp designed for young people ages 6-21 with special needs. Its mission is to help children and young

adults achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education in a summertime environment, even offering an alumni week for campers who have aged out Throughout the program, campers participate in typical summer camp activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating.

Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) announced that they have received a grant from the Office of Mental Health (OMH) for the development of a suicide prevention program aimed at supporting young adults between the ages of 15 and 25 who are at high risk for suicide.

Through collaborations with youth agency staff and youth groups, the suicide prevention program will reach high risk subpopulations, such as youth aging out of foster care, youth with disabilities, GLBT youth and youth living in high risk communities on Long Island. In addition, the project will use a referral service to connect youth to mental health providers, thus increasing

access to services. FREE will launch an anti-stigma marketing campaign, an online support group to help youth in distress, a website, and publications of resources. The project aims to create a safe and supportive environment where youth and young adults watch out for each other and get help if needed.

At the event, families can watch the robots compete, as well as check out the demonstrations from some of the Junior FIRST® LEGO League, FIRST® LEGO League and FIRST® Tech Challenge teams, visit the FESTO traveling exhibit about engineering and try out the da Vinci® Surgical System robot.

“We are extremely excited to bring back the FIRST Robotics Competition this year,” said Debra Winter, FRC Co-Director, SBPLI. “This event is an important stepping stone for those students. For some, it’s a chance to take part in making a vision become a reality. For others, it opens the door

to possibilities that are few and far between these days, like scholarships or job opportunities. Both SBPLI and FIRST are showing that, through the Long Island Regional, they are stepping up to the challenge of increasing awareness of STEM on Long Island.”

This season, students participating in FIRST robotics are eligible to apply for more than $20 million in scholarships from 150 providers. Over a sixweek timeframe, students work with professional engineering mentors to design a robot that solves a problem using a “kit of parts” and a standard set of rules. Once these young inventors create the robot, their teams participate in regional competitions that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration, and the determination of students.

will compete for honors and recognition that reward design excellence, competitive play, sportsmanship, and high-impact partnerships between schools, businesses, and communities.

Now in its 26th season, the FIRST Robotics Competition anticipates close to 2,548 teams from every state in the U.S. and 16 countries worldwide to compete in 58 Regional Events and 17 District Competitions.

More than 2,000 students will compete at the Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition to be eligible to earn a spot at the Championship, to be held April 22nd-25th at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri.

This year’s challenge, RECYCLE RUSHSM, is a recycling-themed competition played by two alliances of three robots each. Robots score points by stacking totes on scoring platforms,

The 34th Annual Catholic School Honor Band performance was held Saturday, March 7th at St. Anthony’s High School in Huntington. The Honor Band, which is made up of outstanding musicians from Catholic schools all across Nassau and Suffolk counties performed for audiences of nearly 3,000 people, including family, friends, school principals, and administrators.

The Honor Band is split into two units, the Red Band and the Blue Band in order to accommodate the number of qualifying students and to be able to seat all of the proud parents and relatives in the auditorium. Each is made up of 3 performing groups; Junior Honor Band – members are mostly in their 2nd and 3rd years of playing, Senior Honor Band – members mostly in their 4th, 5th and 6th years of playing and the Wind Ensemble – members mostly in their 5th and 6th years of playing who are also part of the Senior Honor Band. The Wind Ensemble group performs music that is the most complex of all three groups. Music genres performed by all groups range from original band compositions, classical transcriptions, marches, patriotic, movies and pop arrangements.

The Honor Band, which first performed together as a group of 100 musicians in 1982 has grown to represent over 700 musicians from dozens of schools today. Many graduates, who participated in the honor band when they

attended the elementary schools, are invited and accept to participate in the festival as alumni. The band is led today by Mr. Allan Fisher, an accomplished educator and Educational Manager with Paul Effman Music. Mr.

Honor Band Concert A Success Fisher accepted the baton from Paul Effman in 2007. Mr. Effman still devotes his life to Music Education as well as musical performance. He oversees Paul Effman Music Service and performs with members of his talented staff at each Honor Band Festival. “There is a wealth of expression in every child,” stated Effman. “It is our duty to seek out and nurture the music and art in each and every student we educate.”

Participants in the concert included 42 of the 43 Catholic Elementary Schools operated by the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Music education, academic excellence and faith formation are all important when your goal is to ‘educate the whole child mind, body and spirit’ as is the goal of Long Island’s Catholic elementary schools. Featuring highly developed music and performing arts programs, the schools offer experienced teachers, creative classrooms, computer instruction and innovative reading programs to accelerate achievement.

In addition to the band programs, the schools, working with Paul Effman Music, has recently added orchestral study and string programs giving students the additional opportunity to learn violin, viola and cello, and guitar.

Spring Family Fishing Festival casting contest and other fun activities.”

Festival activities begin at 10 a.m. and are provided free of charge. Activities will include open fishing, fishing instruction, fly casting demonstrations and fish cleaning services. Additionally, a display area will be set up by state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and local fishing clubs.

Participants are urged to try their hands at fly casting, as demonstrations will be on-going. Loaner rods and free bait will be available to participants throughout the day. As the supply of loaner rods is limited, participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing tackle if they have it.

Children’s activities also begin at 10 a.m. and will include an inflatable slide (weather dependent), the “Spring Fling” casting contest, as well as handson educational displays by the DEC’s Education Unit.

Children participating in the casting contest will

have a chance to win some great prizes, which will be supplied by DEC’s I FISH NY Program, OPRHP, the Fisherman Magazine and The Natural Heritage Trust.

Governor Cuomo’s NY Open for Hunting and Fishing Initiative is an effort to improve recreational opportunities for sportsmen and women and to boost tourism activities throughout the state. This includes streamlining fishing and hunting licenses, reducing license fees, improving access for fishing and increasing hunting opportunities in New York State. In support of this initiative, $10 million in NY Works funding has been dedicated to fish hatchery repairs and 50 new land and water access projects such as boat launches, hunting blinds, trails and parking areas.

Under the initiative, the 2015-2016 Executive Budget proposes to establish an additional $8 million for state land access projects and an

additional $4 million for the state’s hatcheries in NY Works funding. The Budget also proposes to create a new capital account which along with federal Pittman-Robertson funds will be used to manage, protect and restore fish and wildlife habitat, and to improve and develop public access for fish and wildlife-related recreation.

The Spring Fishing Festival has been designated a Free Fishing Event, so the freshwater fishing license requirement for anglers age 16 and older has been suspended for this event.

The festival highlights DEC’s spring trout stocking program in Nassau and Suffolk counties conducted in March and April. Prior to the festival, Belmont Lake will be stocked with close to 4,000 brown, brook and rainbow trout by DEC and OPRHP. Upper Twin Pond in Wantagh, Oyster Bay Mill Pond, Massapequa Creek and Reservoir, as well as 17 other Long Island lakes will also be stocked with trout by

DEC, providing excellent prospects for spring fishing in both Nassau and Suffolk counties.

To further encourage fishing in New York State, Governor Cuomo signed legislation in 2012 expanding the opportunity for free fishing clinics, allowing more New Yorkers to experience fishing for the first time by enabling DEC to increase the number of free clinics that can be held throughout the state. The Free Fishing Days program began in 1991 to allow all people the opportunity to sample the incredible fishing New York State has to offer.

Bus Safety Demo Day

The New York School Bus Contractors Association announced today that the Association will host a School Bus Safety Demonstration Day in collaboration with Suffolk Region PTA on Wednesday, March 25th at Suffolk Transportation Service’s Safety and Training Center located on 50 Saxon Avenue in Bay Shore.

The event will help parents and school officials better understand the safety features on today’s modern school bus, as well as, the safety training procedures and requirements that school bus drivers must undergo before getting behind the wheel of a school bus. The event is a collaboration between the New York School Bus Contractors Association and Suffolk Region PTA and is part of an ongoing statewide safety initiative to educate people about school bus

safety.

“Our top priority as private pupil transportation providers is to ensure the safest ride possible to and from school each day for over one million children in New York,” said New York School Bus Contractors Association President, Bob Pape. “The safety demonstrations event will bring New York’s premier School Bus safety experts together to share their knowledge and skills, along with our industries best practices, with parents and school officials from across the region.”

There will be two sessions containing the same program, one from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and another from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Each demonstration session will start with an introduction on how school bus drivers are screened and selected,

along with driver training and qualification requirements.

Participants will then get to experience the actual school bus driver training by going through five separate school bus safety stations, each focusing on a different aspect of safe pupil transportation.

The safety aspects covered will include school bus stop arms, on-board video cameras and student management on and off the bus, child check safety procedures and motion detectors, school bus evacuation procedures and a drivers physical performance test. There will also be information discussions regarding school bus safety legislation and advocacy.

Without the Mesopotamians, many of the things we use on a daily basis would not exist.

One of the many inventions of the Mesopotamians was the creation of the wheel. The wheel was invented around 3500 B.C.E. The Sumerians used the wheels so that they could construct wheeled carts. By doing so, they were able to create extremely efficient ways of transporting goods. Clearly, the wheel plays a significant role in our society today. Without the wheel, cars, trains and even airplanes could not function. The wheel helped the Sumerians tremendously thousands of years ago, and it continues to help us today.

Another major invention of the Mesopotamians was the creation of iron metallurgy. By 3000 B.C.E., the Mesopotamians attempted

to create iron. When they first started, the iron was too weak to be used for anything beneficial.

However, this all changed when one group of people fixed the problem. The Hittites, a group of people who lived in modernday Turkey, created extremely durable iron weapons and tools.

The iron they used quickly spread throughout the Middle East. Not only was iron durable, but it was also inexpensive. It is evident that iron has a tremendous influence on our society today. Iron can be found in fences and buildings.

Additionally, the Mesopotamians are responsible for shipbuilding.

Shipbuilding enabled them to have long-distance trade. The group of people in Mesopotamia who were responsible for shipbuilding was the Phoenicians. One place they went to for trading was Harappa, which is located by the Indus River, Egypt, Lebanon and Persia, which was

located in modern-day Iran, Arabia and Anatolia, which is located in modern-day Turkey. In our society, we clearly use ships to facilitate trade as well. Shipbuilding is still a very important part of our society today.

One major invention of the Mesopotamians was alphabetic writing. The Phoenicians, by approximately 1500 B.C.E, created alphabetic writing. The Phoenician alphabet consisted of 22 consonants. Their system of writing was much more efficient than the earlier cuneiform writing because it was difficult to remember many different symbols. With the Phoenician alphabet, you could build words with letters, which made it much easier for the population to learn how to write. Many of the languages spoken today have Phoenician roots, including English.

Of Snow & Spring & Savoring It All By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Spring has arrived. Sort of.

As I write this column, snow is accumulating at quite a pace, ushering in the start of the new season in much the same manner as the last one began.

I suppose it’s fitting that Long Island should be blanketed by white once more before finally (hopefully) giving way to the first blossoms.

It’s funny, no matter how many seasons we are fortunate to enjoy here in the northeast, there are always those detractors who seem dissatisfied with the variety of weather. The seasons are too long, too hot, too cold, whatever. Imagine if we all lived in an area of extreme

fluctuations, from 100º days to 8 feet of snow at a clip. I think I speak for everyone when I say, no thank you.

Of the four seasons, I would have to say spring is my favorite. It’s the perfect combination of sun and flowers and that lovely light breeze that keeps everything just right. Summer is still right over the horizon, winter is firmly in the rearview mirror and nature is in full flourishing mode. What more could you ask for? Well, other than a few more feet of snow to play in – but I assume even the biggest fans of winter outdoor activities have probably had their fill by now.

Plus, for those of us interested in the “spring cleaning” aspect of things, it’s

the ideal time to reorganize – closets, junk drawers, piles of paperwork, life as a whole… to take stock and give everything a good, old-fashioned refresh.

It’s amazing the cobwebs you find when you take a moment to stop and take inventory, mentally and otherwise.

So, to all, enjoy the season.

All of them. Each one is only three months long, just enough to savor the nuances without becoming too encumbered by the flaws.

Sure, April will most likely bring the usual array of showers; but remember, May, in all its glory, is just around the corner.

Everyone has a preference.

Regardless, we should all make a point of enjoying each and every day.

Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts (PTPA) is proud to present celebrated Irish tenor Ronan Tynan in a special gala performance, The Tenor On Main, at Patchogue Theatre on Saturday, April 25th, at 7 p.m. The gala will benefit the nonprofit by raising funds for future programming at the theatre.

“This is the second time the Board is holding a gala to support the performing arts at Patchogue Theatre and bring the community together to celebrate the theatre’s success,” said Mary Pontieri, vice chair of the PTPA board and co-chair of the gala committee. “We are excited to continue to bring extraordinary acts like Ronan Tynan, Patti LuPone and The Bacon Brothers to Patchogue each year. The theatre has been the heart

of Patchogue’s flourishing music scene.”

The evening will begin with a sound check performed by Ronan Tynan at 3:30 p.m. with an opportunity to meet Tynan.

Following the sound check, guests will proceed on stage where they will enjoy an hour long cocktail reception with hors d’oeuvres and light piano music. At 7 p.m., guests will experience a special gala performance by Ronan Tynan. A silent auction with special packages organized by PTPA board members will take place throughout the evening in the theatre lobby. The gala will conclude with a dessert reception in the lobby and a chance to mingle with Tynan.

Irish tenor, recording artist, physician and champion disabled athlete, Ronan Tynan moves audiences like few

others can. His stirring performances and personal story of triumph have brought him international acclaim.

The New York Times called Tynan, “the closest thing this country has to an official Meistersinger.”

Profiled by ABC’s 20/20, CBS’ Sunday Morning and People Magazine, Ronan Tynan was born with a lower limb disability and had his legs amputated at age 20. Within a year, he was competing in the Paralympic Games, both in track and field and as an equestrian. He won 18 gold medals and set 14 world records, nine of which are still in place today.

In 1992, less than one year after he began studying music, Tynan won the John McCormack Cup for Tenor Voice. He shot to stardom two years later after winning the BBC talent show, Go For

The Tenor On Main It. His success on BBC’s Go For It landed Tynan a recording contract with Sony Music and soldout concerts around the world. His debut album, My Life Belongs To You, was released in 1998 and soared to number five on the charts. That same year, Tynan joined Anthony Kearns and John McDermott as The Irish Tenors, which was an instant worldwide sensation.

Tynan’s self-titled album, “Ronan,” debuted at number two on Billboard’s Classical Crossover chart.

He released Sing Me An Irish Song, a collection of Irish favorites in 2009 and his latest album, All Kinds of Everything, features classic performances from his music career. Tynan captivates audiences with humor, lively spirit and the inspirational message about overcoming

obstacles and living life to the fullest.

Proceeds from the gala ticket sales directly benefit programming at Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts. Tickets for the performance portion of the evening only are available and range from $38 to $58 plus fee. The event is black tie optional.
