Student Stars The Smartest Culinary Students In The Northeast Are From Suffolk County Community College according to the American Culinary Federation (ACF).

The students represented the ACF Eastern Long Island Chefs Chapter team and won overall in the ACF Northeast Region Baron H. Galand Culinary Knowledge

Bowl, held during ChefConnect: Baltimore, ACF’s Northeast/Southeast Regional Conference in February.

This is the second regional win for the ACF Eastern Long Island Chefs Chapter.

This year’s team is Leonardo Figueredo, Samuel Keymel (Shirley), Jennifer Scherer (West Hampton

“It’s important to speak up for yourself and we learn that,” said Peter Hathaway, regarding Magnificent Voices. “It’s

good to help other people out and it’s important.”

By holding this clothing drive, Magnificent Voices has helped BBBSLI to further their mission of helping children who face adversity through mentoring.

The 45 members of Magnificent Voices have made helping others a priority, it is one of their main goals; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island helped them achieve that goal.

“The members of the Magnificent Voices were an absolute pleasure to work with,” said Joanne Kassebaum, Community Relations Manager of BBBSLI Donation Center.

“Their enthusiasm and unwavering drive to meet their goal to make an impact on a child’s life on Long Island was commendable!

Magnificent Voices, a self-advocacy group at AHRC Suffolk comprised of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, made the decision to become more involved in their community by making a difference in the life of a child. What better way to do this than to partner with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Long Island (BBBSLI) for a clothing drive?

BBBSLI set Magnificent Voices’ goal at 200 bags of clothing; if they reached that goal it would provide BBBSLI with the funding needed to match an “at risk” child facing adversity with a caring, screened adult mentor.

The group exceeded their goal by collecting over 240 bags of clothing from all of AHRC Suffolk’s day programs across the Suffolk County, making them the first

HOW TO BE A HERO going through. I just never knew that person would be my best friend.

She had some problems. She lives about thirty to forty-five minutes away from me. We didn’t go to the same school, nor have any mutual friends. We met through our parents. I never knew how close I could grow to someone who lived so far. We can talk for hours.

Well, when talking for hours, you run out of things to say.

When I asked how school was, I knew it was the worst and best thing I could ask. She admitted she constantly felt uncomfortable in school. She was jealous of all her peers’ happiness. Her parents were fighting a lot, she was bullied, and there was also the secret. This secret was one I knew for a long time and promised to keep to this day. Let’s just say it got to her. She became depressed and cut herself.

I, being the friend I am, did what

I needed to do. I told. I told my mom to tell her mom to get her to a therapist. What I didn’t do is tell her secret. I never break my promises. I just told her she was getting bullied and cutting. But this, to any parent, is traumatizing.

Long story short, it took three years, but I got her through it.

But what does this have to do with heroes? Well, now I consider myself a hero. So does my friend.

I’ll never forget the day I got the text: thanks for saving my life.

Not to be selfish, but what I did took guts and time. I selflessly got my friend through, by far, the roughest time of her life. I think I am a hero.

What I’m trying to say is that even the stupidest thing can keep someone from self-harm. Even the happiest of people go through depression. Please be kind to others, and be a hero by simply listening.

The Mattituck Club is mentioned as marching in that parade.

While the banner survived mostly intact over the years, it does require preservation work to ensure its long term survival. “Conservation is quite expensive,” stated Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Society, “but this object is so important and so rare – not another example is known from Long Island – that it merits being fully preserved so that it can be shown to the public once more in all its glory.”

That Old Familiar Feeling By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. That’s what they say anyway.

Hence, my newfound appreciation for the art of yoga. It forces you to breathe, to meditate, to clear your mind of all unwanted stresses. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat.

It all started when, after 20 years of dancing, I decided that I needed something else to fill my time, to bring me back to that place where I felt like I was in shape, in control and in sync with my surroundings. After long days at work on deadline,

I settled into somewhat of a routine, using the classes to de-stress and unwind.

Then came the winter, that vast, endless stretch of bitter cold, spurring the urge to hibernate until the first flowers decided to bloom. Unfortunately, stress doesn’t wait until spring, and so, come March, back to yoga I went.

The first few weeks were a bit rough, what with the creaking bones and stiff muscles and, well, just a general laziness and lack of motivation. But, like magic, after getting back into a bit of a routine, there it was – that old familiar feeling of inner peace. For a few minutes anyway.

The key, I suppose, it to find a way to bottle that feeling and be able to call upon it when needed, to apply it to the world beyond my yoga mat. Perhaps that comes with practice. More practice than the once-aweek, sporadic schedule I have assembled for myself.

One can only assume.

One day at a time. One class at a time. One deep breath at a time. That’s all any of us can focus on in our infinite quest to find that deep, soul-searching sense of meaning to it all.

No stress, no judgment, no pressure. Just you, alone with your thoughts.

Breathe in, breathe out.

And repeat.

Teams Advance P.J. Gelinas and R.C. Murphy junior high school’s Science Olympiad teams had qualified to compete at the New York State competition based on their first and second place wins, respectively, at the Eastern Suffolk Regional

contest this winter.

Both schools were represented by three teams at the regional contest, all of which placed in the top 10 at the event.

Now one team from each school will start preparations for the New

York State tournament, which will be held in Syracuse on April 17th18th. Congratulations to both schools and to all of the coaches who worked so hard to achieve such success.

Leisure Village Board of Director’s President Carole Leonard has been nominated for Suffolk County’s “Senior Citizen of the Year” Award by Legislator Sarah Anker.

Being an active member of the Leisure Village community for seventeen years, Ms. Leonard continues to advocate and has work tirelessly for the wellbeing of the residents within her community of over 2,000 residents.

Currently, Ms. Leonard is serving her fourth year as President of the Leisure Village Board of Directors and her seventh year as a

member on the board.

Ms. Leonard’s dedication to the Leisure Village community is evidenced through her achievements in maintaining and enhancing the neighborhood.

Her accomplishments include facilitating the replacement of a dilapidated bus shelter at the entrance to Leisure Village, and spearheading the “Memorial Bench” program. She is currently supervising a major retaining wall replacement project within the community. In addition, Ms. Leonard is helping her neighbors on a fixed

income save money on their high cost of electricity, by initiating an energy efficiency program to better insulate homes.

“Having worked with Carole, I know she is a tireless advocate for the senior community. She knows how to get things done, and works well with both community members and government,” said Legislator Anker.

“Through her volunteer efforts, Carole has greatly enhanced one of Suffolk County’s largest and most active senior communities.”

Saving Lives Rocky Point Middle School’s community service club members donned blue scrubs and worked as Little Doctors when they volunteered during the school’s March blood drive.

During the event, the students helped register donors, give them snacks post donations and aid

members of the New York Blood Center with basic administrative tasks. The drive drew tremendous support from the local community, as more than 30 donors were accepted.

As the topic tied to the school’s science curriculum, sixth-grade classes attended workshops with representatives from

Long Island’s Got Talent the New York Blood Center prior to the event. During the initiative the students learned about blood, the importance of donating and how this life-saving resource is utilized. They also received donor forms to share with those in the community who met the qualifications to become a donor.

If so, get your audition DVD or YouTube video submitted now for Long Island’s Got Talent 2015, hosted by the Ward Melville Heritage Organization.

Created by WMHO’s Youth Corps, the event gives Long Island students the opportunity to show off their talents this spring.

It’s open to students 10-17

years of age in Nassau or Suffolk County who must still be in high school at the time awards are given in October 2015. Talent must be non-professional vocal or musical instrument performances. The entry deadline is March 27th and there is a $25 entry fee.

A total of $25,000 in scholarships will be awarded from Five Towns College. Those contacted after submitting their DVD or video will be asked to

perform at the first round on April 17th at WMHO’s Educational & Cultural Center, 97P Main Street, Stony Brook Village Center.

Finalists chosen will then perform at WMHO’s Sunday Summer Concerts series and the finals will take place in October 2015 when the winners will be chosen.

Rocky Point High School’s talented studentactors and musicians took to the stage this March to present the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel.

Attendees were entertained as the cast comically and enthusiastically told the

story of a traveling carnival man Billy (played by junior Thomas Loomis) and his love, a local factory worker Julie (played by senior Erin Damers). A colorful cast of characters provided supportive story lines throughout the production and kept audiences engaged during the two-

act show.

The students rehearsed for months on the guidance of dramatic and vocal director Mary Donovan Cerasuola and orchestra director Amy Schecher to ensure this year’s production was a show-stopping hit.

the Parrish Art Museum Student Exhibition.

The Student Exhibition is a 60-year tradition at Parrish Art Museum offering students an opportunity to explore traditional and nontraditional approaches to art-making.

Center at ESBOCES, said, “The students were honored with Awards of Excellence in the areas of photography, 3-D sculpture, and “Ones to Watch” awards for underclassmen.”

In 1940, his vision began to take shape, and the Stony Brook Village rehabilitation project was completed in 1941.

Now, 75 years later, The

Ward Melville Heritage Organization (WMHO) wants to celebrate the individuals who brought Mr. Melville’s vision to life through an exhibit of photos, artifacts, and anecdotes of all those who worked on the project.

From carpenters and electricians to landscapers

and plumbers, these are the stories that made the dream come true.

Three Village Central School District’s secondary orchestra students had the chance of a lifetime – they learned how to put a rock spin on several classical pieces during a two-day workshop with electronic violinist and international recording artist Mark Wood.

More than 400 students from Ward Melville High School, R.C. Murphy Junior High School and P.J. Gelinas Junior High School

covered the auditorium stage and surrounding pit as they participated in the event. During which, they learned new techniques, received tips on how to get the most out of their music and how to amp up their performance of such songs as Anyway You Want It and Inferno.

In preparation for the event, the students learned the repertoire of music provided by the former Trans-Siberian Orchestra

performer.

The workshop culminated in an evening concert for the community, featuring the students and Wood.

This event was held as part of Wood’s Electric Your Strings “Velocity” tour.

Masters Teachers Recognized As the result of a challenging application process, Three Village Central School District educators Pam O’Brien, Peter Schuchman and Gary Vorwald have been named New York State Master Teachers. These three teachers bring the district’s total number of Master Teachers to five, the second highest amount on Long Island.

The program encourages educators to mentor their peers and deepen their own scholastic and professional development. They will join a network of more than 500 outstanding educators who demonstrate a deep understanding of their

content area, pedagogy and communities.

Ms. O’Brien has been teaching for 26 years, the last 14 of which have been at Ward Melville High School. During her time in the district she has taught a range of courses but most recently the majority of her schedule has been Advanced Placement statistics.

Mr. Schuchman has taught for 12 years at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School and has a total of 13 years of educational experience. At Gelinas he teaches Regents/honors level Earth Science and the Earth SMART courses.

Mr. Vorwald has taught

in the district since 1998 and been an educator for 28 years. During his time in Three Village, he has taught nearly every science course offered at P.J. Gelinas, is the school’s current department chairperson and the lead coach of its award-winning Science Olympiad team.

For the prestigious honor, the teachers were required to demonstrate their success in the classroom and model teaching practices. They had to provide transcripts, recommendation letters, and complete a teaching demonstration, writing sample, personal essay and interview.

Five members of the Islanders team visited the children in the various pediatric units of the Nassau University Medical Center. They were welcomed by Dr. Politi and hospital officials, who took them to the various floors

History Comes Alive

Silence fell over the auditorium at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School as the eighth-grade class listened to Warner Reich recall his experience living through one of the world’s darkest times - the Holocaust.

The students have spent the past several weeks studying the time period as part of their English curriculum and were captivated by Mr. Reich’s message encouraging all to stand up for others. Throughout his presentation he recalled the Nazi movement, their influences throughout Europe and his own escape

from Germany before being captured and placed one of the camps. Equating the passive behaviors of what transpired that time to bullying, Mr. Reich urged the students to stand up for others and not to tolerate any negative actions.

In their classes, the students have been learning about the subject through such texts as The Diary of Anne Frank, Cage and Night as well as activities and research projects on the historical context of the Holocaust.

Mr. Reich’s first hand account of the period

enabled the students to further understand the atrocities of war during this time.

To help preserve Mr. Reich’s compelling presentation for future generations, Gelinas art teacher Mike Sacco and technology teacher Dean Kostis recorded the morning’s event. They will be editing the vocal recordings to pair with Mr. Reich’s Power Point presentation. The final project will be used to continue to share this historical recollection of the Holocaust.

The visit was organized by the Child Life Program at Stony Brook Children’s and the New York

Islanders.

Celebrating Child Life Awareness Month, the program has been sponsoring daily activities and visits which highlight what the Child Life Specialists do every day -- provide therapeutic, educational, and recreational activities to meet the unique emotional and developmental needs of hospitalized children.

These activities include medical play therapy, games, arts and crafts, as well as specialized programs such as animal assisted therapy, music therapy, and birthday and holiday parties.
