Moriches Field Brewing Company received $18,750 to revitalize an empty downtown space.

(Cheers to that.)

Revitalization grants are just one of the ways we help businesses on Long Island and in the Rockaways. For Moriches Field Brewing Company, a grant from our economic development program was a perfect fit to help them renovate a previously vacant property. A discount through our Vacant Space Revival Program saved them more than $4,000 on their electric bills, and rebates for upgrading to LED lighting are keeping them saving month after month.

Helping revitalize our Island, one business at a time, is something we’re proud to be part of and something definitely worth celebrating.

National Merit Finalists

All 11 students from Ward Melville High School who were named semifinalists in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship program have advanced in the competition and were designated as finalists. Congratulations to Adam Bear, Alexander Dong, Luke Hou, Benjamin Proothi, Riya Sangwan,

Peter Sloniewsky, Serene Stoller, Kate Sun, Isabel Xu, Dorian Zhou and Mikaeel Zohair.

Approximately 15,000 academically talented high school seniors are named finalists. These students will go on to compete for Merit Scholarship awards, which are based on one’s abilities, skills

and accomplishments. The Merit Scholar title is given to nearly half of the students who achieved finalist standing.

The district congratulates these students and wishes them the best as they advance in the National Merit Scholarship program.

Eighth graders at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School are making maple syrup from trees in their own backyard. In the farm to school elective, students work on growing food using various methods throughout the year. They learn how to harvest their

crops and ultimately cook and eat them.

Each fall, students head out to the small patches of woods surrounding the school building and mark any maple trees they find. Come February, they return to the marked trees and apply the proper

techniques for maple tapping. The eighth graders collect sap for a few weeks before boiling it down into pure maple syrup. The culmination of the project is a waffle breakfast, eaten with their own syrup.

Students Read Across The District

Read Across America was a moment to read across the district when 34 Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students trekked to Edna Louise Spear Elementary School to share their own love of reading. The event, spearheaded by elementary librarian Meg Hoon, was co-coordinated by Middle School/High School librarian Eva Grasso.

“We know that reading has enumerable benefits –from improving vocabulary,

to helping us develop critical thinking, imagination, empathy and a simple love of literature. This field trip was a wonderful way to model all of that,” Ms. Grasso said. “It also gave our older students an opportunity to push themselves out of their comfort zones, navigate those ‘I’m-about-to-readto-a-classroom-full-of-littlepeople butterflies,’ catch up with former teachers, and feel connected to their community in a really

special way.”

High school service clubs and National Honor Society members participated in the event. Each student chose a book they wanted to read, took it home to practice and came prepared to share it with the elementary school students. One student even read in Spanish to the younger ENL students, and they also created some bookmarks for Mrs. Hoon to give to her library students.

Special Olympics New York And Jersey Mike’s Team Up For Second Consecutive Day Of Giving On March 29th

Special Olympics New York is pleased to announce that 41 Jersey Mike’s Subs locations around the state will participate in the Day and Month of Giving campaigns for the second consecutive year.

During March, customers can donate to Special Olympics NY at participating Jersey Mike’s restaurants. The campaign culminates with a Day of Giving on Wednesday,

March 29, when local Jersey Mike’s restaurants will give 100 percent of the day’s sales to the athletes of Special Olympics NY.

“I would like to extend a personal invitation to you and your family to visit Jersey Mike’s Subs throughout the month of March, and especially on Day of Giving when 100 percent of sales – every penny – goes to help a great local cause,” said

Peter Cancro, Jersey Mike’s founder and CEO.

“Jersey Mike’s is a true champion of champions. Every dollar donated during the Month of Giving – and every dollar spent at partner locations March 29 – will help change lives for people with intellectual differences,” said Special Olympics New York President & CEO Stacey Hengsterman. “Our athletes, families, and

Advance Care Plans

The United States population is rapidly aging. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), by 2030, the number of Americans aged 65 and older will more than double to 71 million older Americans, comprising

NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS SERVICE DIRECTORY

roughly 20 percent of the U.S. population.

With age comes the added burden of dealing with illnesses such as heart failure, dementia and cancer, any one of which can leave you unable to make decisions involving

your care. Unless you have a plan in place, the burden will fall on your family. Protect your loved ones from having to make life and death decisions on your behalf by developing an advance care plan today.
