Are you all enjoying your one extra hour of daylight?

Feels more springy already, doesn’t it?

Me, I’ve always looked to St. Patrick’s Day as the transitional date when winter finally – and hopefully thoroughly – gives way to spring. After that, it’s only a matter of time ‘til we’re dying Easter eggs, breaking out the pastels and looking to plant our gardens.

After journeying to Ireland this past summer, it was fascinating to see how little the homeland pays attention to this

“holiday.” It is a uniquely American celebration of… well, in theory, Irish pride.

In reality… let’s just say, Irish heritage seems to be optional in the grand parade of drunkenness and debauchery that descends upon the entire month of March here in New York.

But back to the dawn of spring and sunshine and butterflies and flowers… there’s something very exciting about this rebirth of Mother Nature, isn’t there? The time for hibernation is over. Get out the cleaning supplies, put away any lingering remnants of winter, and start redecorating for this

new season of rebirth.

So, take solace. It’s been one long, tedious winter, to be sure. But spring is ready to be sprung upon us all. Open the windows, let the light in, stop and smell the flowers – once they’ve begun to bloom, of course.

Pretty soon, the snowcovered landscape will be a distant memory.

We’ve all claimed we’re going to enjoy this upcoming spring and summer that much more after the last several months of bone-chilling cold.

School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) is announcing that March is Expanding Girls’ Horizons in Science and Engineering Month and is urging girls to get involved in robotics as a way to become interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Expanding Girls’ Horizons in Science and Engineering Month was created by the Expanding

Your Horizons (EYH) Network, a not-forprofit organization that encourages young women to pursue careers in STEM. According to the EYH Network, girls become most interested in these areas of study when they are in middle school.

This season, SBPLI had 110 elementary and middle school teams compete in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO

League (FLL) Qualifying Tournaments; of those teams, 13 teams were fully comprised of Girl Scouts from Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

“It is encouraging to see girls and young women take part in our robotics programs, especially those who start early in our Junior FIRST LEGO League program,” said Joani Madarash, Executive Director, SBPLI. “Many of these young women

Reminder: You should buckle up properly on every trip—no matter the distance—especially since most crashes occur close to home.

Shortcut: “I’m picking up several kids after soccer practice and I’m going to put my 8-year-old daughter in the front seat so all the children can fit into the car.”

Reminder: All children under age 13 are safest when riding in the backseat and properly restrained in a car seat, booster seat or seat belt.

Shortcut: “We will be driving more people in our car than we have seat belts.

Since it’s a short trip, it’s not a big deal for someone to ride on another person’s lap.”

Reminder: It’s never safe to ride on another person’s lap. Each passenger should be properly restrained on every trip.

Shortcut: “My son is 10 years old and 4’6” tall. He’s big enough to use a seat belt now.”

Reminder: The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends children continue to use beltpositioning booster seats until they are 4’9” and the seat belt fits properly.

Spring Is In The Air The Arbor Day Foundation is making it easy for everyone to celebrate the arrival of spring by planting trees.

Making The Most Of Each Season

As the weather gets warmer, it is easy to let seasonal moments pass us by. For instance, the glory associated with St. John the Baptist’s High School Rowing is heightened going into spring season.

Getting on the water is a long-awaited break from the monotony of winter training.

Thankfully, our team is bigger and better than ever. With a handful of standouts, backed up by a strong base of rowers, SJB is certainly in the hunt for a State Championship win this year.

Although we have not been the most competitive team in recent years, a newfound drive and

revamped training staff seem to be the key to a winning season.

For those who don’t know, Rowing is an historic sport that tests both the mind and the body. As a four year Varsity rower, I know as well as any of my teammates just how dedicated one has to be to excel in this sport.

Although I am far from elite, Rowing is becoming increasingly competitive.

With an abundance of college scholarship money available for top rowers, the race for supremacy is grueling. Long workouts on the rowing machine give rowers the edge that they crave when spring season rolls around.

It is no secret that the basis for a winning team is proper training during the winter. For rowers, this season functions as the offseason. An old adage states that “races are won in the winter.”

Essentially, the better prepared group will come out on top. There is no feeling comparable to passing another boat. In that moment, it becomes evident that the faster team simply wants it more.

Without preparation, that win could not be possible.

As we barrel into Spring, don’t let moments like this pass you by. Make the most out of the season, and life as a whole.

The Problem Automobile crashes remain a leading cause of death for children and it’s important that parents consistently and correctly use the appropriate car seat to keep their child passengers safe.

Many parents may be unknowingly endangering their children as three out of four car seats are not used correctly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

To help residents quit smoking, the Town of Brookhaven will conduct a six-week smoking cessation program starting Tuesday, April 1st and continuing every Tuesday through May 20th.

Meetings will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Youth Bureau conference room on the second floor

of Brookhaven Town Hall, located at One Independence Hill in Farmingville.

Attendees will learn the skills needed to be tobacco free, including techniques in stress management, behavioral modification and relaxation. Medication to help smokers kick the habit will be provided for a

nominal fee.

For the past 27 years, students of Comsewogue High School have showcased their eclectic talents with the community at A Night for Jason, slated for Friday, March 21st, at 7 p.m. A diverse mix of talents - from pop songs, dance acts, martial arts displays and some goodold fashioned rock-nroll guitar playing - have graced the stage and this year is no exception.

A Night for Jason is a student-run variety show produced in honor of Jason Mariano, a child in the school district who

succumbed to leukemia in 1987. The money raised from the event benefits Friends of Karen, a tri-state children’s charity with an office in Port Jefferson, that offers emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families in order to keep them stable, functioning and able to cope.

“This is always such a great way to keep our students involved in caring for our community,” said Ms. Dana Urbinati, a teacher at the High

School and coordinator of the event. “Along with the talents and energy of everyone involved, we want people to know that the funds raised are going to help some very special families in our communities.”

(NAPSI)—There are steps parents and others can take to drive down the dreadful rate of traffic injuries and fatalities. An estimated 6,000 people are killed and 500,000 people are injured annually because someone was texting, e-mailing or talking on a mobile phone while driving.

The Facts Dr. Joel Haber, a clinical psychologist and LG Text Ed council member, explains that for teens, texting and driving is an even bigger problem than it is for adults.

First, kids text more.

Texting is their preferred mode of communication.

According to a recent LG Text Ed survey conducted

by LG Mobile phones, while half of all teens admit to texting while driving, only 4 percent of parents are aware of this.

Second, teens are inherently novices when it comes to driving. They especially need to focus on the road to compensate for any lack of driving skill or experience.

The Mathematical Association of America has recognized Earl L. Vandermeulen High School junior and mathletes team captain Ryan Burke for his achievement in the American Math Competition 12.

The exam, which was given to students nationwide in grades 11 and 12 on February

4th, consisted of 25 multiple-choice precalculus questions to be answered in 75 minutes.

The main purpose of the AMC 12 is to spur interest in mathematics and develop talent through the excitement of solving challenging problems.

Ryan’s high score on the exam was in the top 5 percent of AMC 12

participants nationwide.

It also qualifies him to take the American Invitational Mathematics Exam in March. The three-hour exam consists of 15 questions and is intended to provide further challenge and recognition to the highest performing mathematics students in North America.

Ward Melville High School’s Science Olympiad Team has once again captured top honors at this year’s regional competition and secured their bid to the state contest. During the regional event, the team took first, second and fourth place.

During the contests, the Ward Melville teams compete in many of the program’s 24 events, which

span topics such as physics, chemistry, earth science, biology and technology.

The focus of the Science Olympiads is to promote excitement and enthusiasm in science through annual regional, state and national competitions.

Frequently, preparation for these events provides enrichment well beyond the traditional science curriculum.

Students

work cooperatively with their peers while learning science technology skills.

Since 2009, the team has advanced to the state contest and qualified to compete in the national competition. Last year, the team had their best performance at the national contest, as they secured a fifth-place win.

(NAPSI)—The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports.

The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report.

According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added.

Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com.

The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports.

“Many people get annual medical checkups.

We encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.

“Our acquisition of the observatory validates that the County, our sponsor, has confidence in our programs and in turn demonstrates our commitment to the scientific community,” Breeden explained. “The County and College’s commitment will now enable us to apply for grants from organizations such as The National Science Foundation,” Breeden said.

The research conducted will result in a greater understanding of astronomy and provide

inch Meade RCX400 Ritchey-Chretien telescope has a resolving power of 0.45 arc seconds, which is equivalent to being able to see a dime a little more than five miles away, and is housed under a 20 ½ foot rotating dome atop the Smithtown Sciences Building and equipped with networked computer controls allowing partial operation from remote locations. Full networking and remote operation are planned in the near future.

The instrument can also be operated via electronic hand controls and is equipped with software that accesses a catalog of coordinates for 145,000 celestial objects that make viewing and moving from one object to another easier. The telescope’s primary mirror also has ultra-high transmission coatings to help increase light transmission by 20 percent, making objects brighter, and is mounted

to a 12 foot-tall cylindrical metal pier that is filled with sand to dampen vibrations.

There is an additional vibration dampening system on top of the pier that was designed and installed by Suffolk County Community College Science Department faculty, consisting of metal plates with rubber spacers.

Astronomers using the new telescope can also record what they are seeing through the college’s CCD Camera equipped with filters that meet astronomical research standards.

The college is working to open the Observatory, by appointment, to small groups from the public on Friday nights later this spring.

College President McKay said an announcement will be made to the media, via the college’s social media channels and on its web site when the program’s details are established.

The stars are shining a bit brighter on the Suffolk County Community College Ammerman Campus with the opening of the college’s new stateof-the-art observatory where star gazers can peer into the sky and look more than a billion years back in time. Suffolk County Community College now has one of only four observatories in our county − Stony Brook University, Custer in Southold, the Vanderbilt Museum and Montauk are the other four – and Suffolk Community’s is among the largest.

In astronomy, first light is the first use of a telescope (or, in general, a new instrument) to take an astronomical image after it has been constructed. This is often not the first viewing using the telescope; optical tests have been performed to adjust the components.

Despite this, a first light is always a moment of tremendous excitement, both for those who design and build the telescope and for the astronomical community at large.

“This is a fantastic new addition to our College,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay, “that will provide research opportunities for faculty and astronomy majors, as well as enhance our college’s reputation in the scientific community while educating the public about astronomy through public outreach.”

Students first went to

“la banque” where they traded American currency for euros, using current conversion rates. They then began shopping at a variety of shops including a boulangerie, chocolatier and even a creperie.

“All of the shops were run by students who, with

the help of their parents, created the menu items,” said Marshak.

“Using vocabulary learned on numbers and shopping, students engaged in salerelated conversations entirely in French.”

Preparing For The Future

Working in concert with Stony Brook University, Setauket and Arrowhead elementary school students had the chance to participate in authentic and engaging learning opportunities centered on the topic of college and career readiness.

Athletes and admissions representatives spoke with the third- through sixth-grade students about leadership, sportsmanship, academics and healthy living, while members of the university band provided a pep rally for the younger students. The program was called Kids Day at both schools.

“It is our hope that these connections across

learning institutions allow our elementary students to experience the many possibilities open to them as they move through their academic career,” said Dr. Nathalie Lilavois, who coordinated the effort in the district with the assistance of Arrowhead Assistant Principal Jim Williams and Matt Ivins and Chris Murray from the Stony Brook University Athletics Department.

“These opportunities with an internationally recognized institution such as Stony Brook University provide meaningful, authentic and engaging college and career-ready experiences that exemplify what learning is all about.”

During his discussion with the fifth- and sixthgraders at Setauket, Stony Brook University assistant director of undergraduate admissions Chris D’Orso reminded the students that it is never too early to begin thinking about their futures. He urged them to keep their options open and to begin to ask family and friends about their careers to learn about the various choices they have for their futures.

Following the morning workshops, third- through sixth-grade students from both buildings attended a Seawolves basketball game.

Helping Your Pets Take A Bite Out Of Poor Health (NAPSI)—Dog owners who think a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s are barking up the wrong tree—and they are not alone.

In fact, according to a recent survey, many pet owners have beliefs about their pet’s health that are not accurate or grounded in science.

For example, the study— commissioned by the Greenies brand, the maker of dental chews and treats for pets-found that almost half of pet owners believe that dogs’ mouths are cleaner than humans’ and that any type of chewing is good for a dog’s teeth.

It also found that about 40 percent thought it was normal for their pets to have stinky breath. About one-third of pet owners believed that a dog’s saliva was capable of curing human wounds.

“There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding a pet’s oral health,” said veterinary dental expert Dr. Jan

Bellows, incoming president of the American Veterinary Dental College.

“Dogs’ mouths are certainly not cleaner than a human’s. Dogs often carry a variety of germs and bacteria in their mouths that stem from buildup of plaque and tartar that can potentially make humans sick through contact with saliva.”

The Right Kind of Chewing “Many pet owners also believe that any type of chewing is good for their dogs, but tooth fractures are a common occurrence in pets because teeth can only withstand a certain amount of pressure from hard objects before they break. When pets chew on inflexible items, such as bones, ice cubes or nylon toys, it can put them at risk for breaking a tooth.

And while smelly breath in pets is common, pet owners who believe this is normal may be missing the signs of poor oral health or potential dental disease,”

Dr. Bellows said.

A Healthy Mouth Is Key A healthy mouth is essential to the overall well-being of pets, but misguided information about pet oral health can affect more than just your pet’s mouth. For proper pet oral health, veterinarians advise daily brushing or giving of Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC)?approved dental treats, and at least annual oral exams by a veterinarian with professional cleanings as recommended.

“Pet owners who are knowledgeable about their furry companions’ oral health will avoid the pitfalls of commonly held myths and enable the best care for everyone’s wellbeing,” said Dr. Bellows.

(NAPSI)—Teens are more optimistic about their financial future but may depend longer on their parents, according to a major new survey. Teens also expressed concern over paying for higher education.

Among the Teens and Personal Finance Survey’s key findings, conducted

by Junior Achievement USA® and The Allstate Foundation: • More than half of teens think students are borrowing too much to pay for college, yet only 9 percent report they are currently saving money for college.

• Nearly 30 percent have not talked with their parents about paying for college.

their ability to budget (23 percent), use credit cards (20 percent) or invest money (34 percent).

• The majority of teens (76 percent) still report the best time to learn about money management is in kindergarten through high school, but only 29 percent reported programs currently in place.

• Of the 33 percent of teens who say they do not use a budget, 42 percent are “not interested” and more than a quarter (26 percent) think “budgets are for adults.”

• More than one-third of teens are either unsure or think their parents do not talk with them enough about money and budgeting.

“From our findings, we can infer that teens expect to live with their parents longer. It is interesting to see this shift in teens thinking they will remain financially dependent

on their parents,” said Jack E. Kosakowski, president and chief executive officer of Junior Achievement USA. Since 2005, the organization, in partnership with The Allstate Foundation, has helped more than 1.2 million students set personal goals about money and make wise financial choices.

The program, JA Economics for Success®, also empowers students to develop, plan and set goals to help protect themselves from unexpected financial pitfalls.

According to Don Civgin, president and chief executive officer of Allstate Financial, there is an urgent need for parents and children to broach the subject. “Parents continue to be the No. 1 influence on teens when it comes to money,” he said, “so there is tremendous opportunity for family conversation.”

On March 3rd, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School students in kindergarten through fifth grade joined with millions of their peers across the country to celebrate the 16th Annual National Education Association’s Read Across America Day, which celebrates Dr. Seuss’ birthday and the joys of

reading.

The event, coordinated by elementary school librarian Selinda Moore, welcomed Port Jefferson Village Mayor Margot Garant, who read to students her favorite Dr. Seuss book, Green Eggs and Ham. In honor of Seuss, students sang “Happy

Birthday,” dressed in stripes to represent the Cat in the Hat’s stovepipe hat, and were even treated to a special guest visit by the cat. Also in attendance was Joann Muscardin, head of children’s services at the Port Jefferson Free Library, who gave attendees themed bookmarks.

Recognition Awards There were 37 Scouts, Scouters and family members in attendance at the annual JCOS of Suffolk County Council’s Awards and Recognitions Breakfast on March 2nd, hosted by Temple Beth Chai located in Hauppauge.

A hearty bagel, cream cheese and lox breakfast was served. They were even treated to some pickled herring. Elliot Klugman of the SCC JCOS and the National/NE Region JCOS gave the invocation, opening prayers, blessing over the bread and the closing prayer. Welcome was made by JCOS Chair Barry Kopeloff.

Bruce Streger, JCOS Breakfast Chair led the participants in the opening ceremony, the singing of God Bless America, Hatikvah and introduced the distinguished guests.

The blessing after the meal was given by Rabbi Rhonda Nebel of Temple Beth Chai

of Hauppauge, the JCOS Religious Adviser.

Dirk Smith, the Suffolk County Council (BSA) Executive and CEO, addressed the attendees and praised the involvement and commitment of the Jewish Committee. In addition, JCOS member and SCC Assistant Council Commissioner Andy Calev collected funds as a Friends of Scouting donation by the Jewish Committee and to help with repairs to the Jewish Chapel at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp.

Keynote Speaker was JCOS Chairperson Emeritus Bruce Streger, who spoke about the chapel at Baiting Hollow Boy Scout camp, the 2013 National Scout Jamboree, the upcoming Jewish Conclave (June 6th through 8th) and the North East Regional Jewish Committee Conference on March 23rd.

During special

ceremonies, presentations of medals and certificates were made by JCOS Chairman Emeritus Bruce Streger and Cub Scout Religious Emblems Coordinator Jan Rose of the Jewish Committee on Scouting of Suffolk County Council to those scouts who had recently earned their recognitions. The scouts’ parents assisted in the ceremonies by pinning the emblems onto the youth’s uniforms. Presentations were the Aleph Emblem to Cub Scout Maxwell A. of Pack 120 (Port Jefferson Station) and Ner Tamid Emblem to Boy Scout Matthew Finkelstein of Smithtown of Boy Scout Troop 360 (Greenlawn).

Each scout was given comic books and scouting patches to take home. All in attendance received a special JCOS Annual Awards and Recognitions Breakfast commemorative patch.

Emblem Presentation

The first eleven points of the Boy Scout Law must be demonstrated in order to go from one rank to the next, including Eagle.

The 12th point - “A Scout Is Reverent” - can be demonstrated in a variety of ways including the earning of the religious award of the Scout’s individual faith.

As with all the religious emblems, this is not an award for Scouting skills,

but rather an emblem authorized by the Boy Scouts of America to be worn on the Scout’s uniform after satisfactory completion of the necessary requirements.

For the 8 to 11 year-old Cub Scouts, the Aleph Emblem requires seven areas of study, including Torah, prayers, religious holidays, the synagogue or temple, Bible heroes, famous American Jews and

the land of Israel.

In observance of the 12th point of the Scout Law, Port Jefferson Station’s Maxwell Aron of Cub Scout Pack 120 (Port Jefferson Station) was presented with the Aleph Emblem on March 2nd at the Suffolk County Council’s Jewish Committee on Scouting’s annual Awards and Recognition Breakfast, held at Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge, by JCOS member Jan Rose.

Bear Cub Scout Maxwell Aron was presented with a medal, certificate, a purple and silver “scouting religious emblem knot” (to be sewn onto his uniform) and a special Jewish Committee on Scouting kippah (skullcap).

Cub Scout Maxwell Aron of Cub Scout Pack 120 (Port Jefferson Station) is the son of Stacey and Howard Aron, older brother to Spencer Aron, and grandson of Randy Spier (Port Jefferson Station).

On February 22nd, two tiny pygmy goats were born on the grounds of Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. They are expected to be a highlight throughout many of the camp’s sessions this summer, due to their irresistible cuteness.

The goats’ sexes are yet to be determined and therefore, they do not have names. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck employees are considering initiating a naming contest to enhance the fun. It has been noted that since they were born on February 22nd, the day we honor George Washington, one may be named George or, if appropriate, Georgie Girl!
