Pets bring much joy to the lives they touch. So it should come as no surprise that the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey, which was conducted by the American Pet Products Association, found that about 85 million families in the United States own a pet. In Canada, 7.5 million households are home to companion animals, states the PetBacker blog.

Pets offer companionship and unconditional love. While they are fitting for any family, seniors may find that having a pet is especially beneficial.

The organization A Place for Mom, which helps match families with senior living residences, says pets provide a comfort system that produces measurable health results. Caring for pets and being around them can produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that may help to lower stress hormones while also increasing production of the feelgood hormone serotonin.

This is not the only health benefit pets may provide. A recent study from the Mayo Clinic, which looked at 1,800 people between the ages of 25 and 64 who had healthy hearts, found that almost half owned a dog. Having a dog was likely to spur heart-healthy behaviors, like exercising with the pet, eating well and having ideal blood sugar levels.

Pets also provide emotional support and companionship that can help seniors — including those who may be divorced or widowed — feel more secure and happy.

The National Poll on Healthy Aging found that, among respondents who had pets, 88 percent said their pets helped them enjoy life, and 86 percent said their pets made them feel loved.

Seniors considering getting a pet can explore the many benefits to doing so.

• Reduce pain: A 2012 study published in Pain Magazine found therapy dogs provided “significant reduction in pain and emotional distress for chronic pain patients.”

• Feeling of purpose: Caring for an animal not only stimulates physical activity, but it also can give seniors a reason to get up and go, which equates to a feeling of purpose.

• Altered focus: Having a pet can help seniors focus on something other than physical or mental health issues and preoccupations about loss or aging, according to New York-based psychologist Penny B. Donnenfeld.

• Increased physical activity: Pets require care, and that interaction can get seniors moving more than if they didn’t have a pet.

• Improved health: Ongoing research from Harvard Medical School has found dog owners have lower blood pressure, healthier cholesterol levels and lower risk of heart disease than those who don’t own a dog.

• Stick to routine: Caring for pets helps seniors maintain a routine. Having structure after retirement can be important to ward off risk of depression. Staying on top of feeding, grooming and other pet needs also can help prevent cognitive decline.

Pets bring many benefits to their owners’ lives, and they may be the perfect remedy for seniors looking for a friend and purpose.

Signs You May Have A Thyroid Problem The thyroid gland plays an essential role in the human body. According to the online healthcare publishing company Medicine.net, the thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck that produces the hormones that regulate metabolism.

When the thyroid gland’s ability to do its job is compromised, the effects can be serious and lead to a host of symptoms that don’t go away.

Thyroid conditions vary, and as a result, that can produce their own distinct symptoms. The Harvard Medical School notes that the thyroid can be overactive (hyperthyroidism) or underactive (hypothyroidism). An overactive thyroid will produce too much hormones, while an underactive thyroid won’t produce enough. Symptoms of both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can overlap, but each condition has its

own unique symptoms as well.

What are the symptoms of hyperthyroidism?

• Fatigue • Fast heartbeat • Trouble concentrating • Increased appetite • Sweating • Nervousness, restlessness • Unintentional weight loss What are the symptoms of hypothyroidism?

• Fatigue • Increased sensitivity to cold • Muscle weakness • Brittle nails and hair • Hoarse voice • Unintentional weight gain The online medical resource Healthline notes that most cases of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism cannot be prevented. For example, hyperthyroidism is often caused by Graves’ disease,

an immune system disorder that’s most common among women. Some peoples’ thyroids have become overactive because they consumed too many foods that contained iodine, such as table salt, fish and seaweed. However, Healthline notes that such instances are rare.

While people may not be able to prevent thyroid conditions from developing, they can keep a watchful eye out for any of the aforementioned symptoms of overactive or underactive thyroids. Any such symptoms should be reported to a physician immediately.

Medicine.net notes that, in most cases, thyroid disorders can be managed with treatment and are not life-threatening. However, the outlook for people with thyroid conditions is always better when symptoms are reported early.

Elementary schools across the Three Village Central School District recently took part in a spirited Soup-er Bowl of Caring competition that supported the Blessings in a Backpack, a charity that sends meals home to school-age children in need of food during

weekends while not able to receive lunch at school.

During the course of a week, students and staff donated cans and packages of soup, each working to be the building that collected the greatest number of donations.

Together all five schools collected 7,500 donations

and Nassakeag was crowned the competition winner, having collected 3,215 items alone. As the winning school, Nassakeag was awarded a “soup-er” trophy which they will display in the lobby of the building.

To stay safe, remember the mantra, “When thunder roars, go indoors.” In addition, the following precautionary measures can help people stay safe when lightning strikes.

•Postpone outdoor activities if the weather forecast calls for thunder-storms. You also can use the 30-30 rule.

After you see lightning, start counting to 30. If you hear thunder before you reach 30, go indoors. Suspend activities for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder, offers the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

•The human body does not store electricity, says the Insurance Information Institute. Therefore, if a person is struck, you can safely offer first aid.

New Bowling Team Emerges Victorious

In its inaugural year, two members of the newly formed Comsewogue/ Ward Melville combined boys varsity bowling team, 10th grader Steven Orland and P.J. Gelinas Junior

High School seventh grader Bradyn Brogan, have raised the bar in the athletic world and earned top honors.

Bradyn won the doubles Section XI singles/

double tournament and Steven won the singles tournament. By winning, Steven has automatically qualified for the state AllStar Team.

Robotics Teams Win With Character And Skill The Stony Brook School’s Middle School Robotics Team competed in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League Qualifier on Feb. 1. This competition, held annually, challenges students to research issues such as energy efficiency and

recycling and then develop a solution and present it to the community.

Additionally teams of students are required to design, build, and program a robot using LEGOs to compete against other teams from across Long Island.

At the qualifier, Team

11362 (the “Urban Ursulas”) won the Core Values Gracious Professionalism Award, and Team 11363 (the “HydroBears)” won the Alliance Award, Robot Design Programming Award, and will be moving on to the Championship round at Longwood High School on March 1.

Daylight Saving Time March 8 Most parts of North America will begin Daylight Saving Time on March 8, 2020, at 2:00 a.m., respective to their time zones. In the European Union, “Summer Time” begins at 1:00 a.m. on the last Sunday in March, which this year will be March 29. The change is made at the same absolute time across all time zones respective to Greenwich Mean Time, which also is known as Universal Time.

One reason DST is still practiced in many areas of the world is to push an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening and make better use of this daylight. There are various origin stories linked to DST, including one that involves Benjamin Franklin. DST also has been touted as a way to save resources during times of war or as a means to helping farmers be more prosperous.

However, despite the many

proclaimed benefits of DST, there are many detractors who insist that there are no perceived benefits. Some of these DST naysayers say switching the clocks twice a year can negatively affect the body’s natural circadian rhythm. Various efforts both domestically and abroad have been instituted to abolish DST, but as of 2020, it remains on the calendar.

Minnesauke Elementary School students worked to bridge the distance between East Setauket and Australia this winter as they conducted several community service projects to aid the country deeply affected by the harsh wildfires.

Third graders worked to help the Australian animals by participating in a charity read-a-thon.

Collectively, the grade level raised $1,662.45 as part of the project.

In a project dubbed “Operation Hope for Australia,” fifth graders in Kate Hunter’s class completed extra chores around their house to raise funds for a startup action plan. The students used the collected funds to purchase supplies to make friendship bracelets in red, white and blue – the national colors of both the United States and Australia.

Supporting Australia Each bracelet included a 3D printed charm, designed and printed using the Tinkercad software in the school’s STEM lab with the help of teacher Sean Dowling. Ms. Hunter’s class marketed the bracelets in the cafeteria and sold them to friends and teachers. The class collected more than $1,159 for the Australian Red Cross, which they sent overseas along with several of the completed bracelets to show their support.

Port Jefferson Kindergarten Class Share 100 Days Of Learning Students at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School marked a milestone when they celebrated 100 days of school before the winter break.

Kindergarten teacher Miegan Rowett’s students welcomed their family members into

the classroom for some engaging activities that involved the number 100. “We all had a lot of fun celebrating the 100th day,�

Rowett said of the daily reading, writing, science, art, physical education and math lessons that led up to
