Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps Yunis started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. A complementary program to the organization’s already existing trust and financial services, the Life’s WORC Planned Giving Program will enable donors to create a lasting legacy that benefits Life’s WORC and those it serves, while also giving donors significant financial benefits. According to Life’s WORC’s CEO Janet Koch, “Our donors are vital to our ability to fulfill our mission. It is a natural extension of our other financial services and will enable Life’s WORC to be a better resource to both individuals with disabilities and their families, as well as a broader cross-section of the community.” The Life’s WORC Planned Giving Program offers donors various options. These include: gifts that use appreciated assets as a substitute for cash, gifts that return income or other financial benefits to the donor in return for his/ her contribution, and gifts payable upon the donor’s demise through his/her estate planning. SUFFOLK ZONE 6 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY MARCH 2, 2022 - MARCH 15, 2022 • WWW.LONGISLANDMEDIAGROUP.COM

The Rocky Point School District varsity cheerleaders, led by coaches Anna Spallina and Arianna Scanlon, performed two flawless, zero deduction hit routines, winning them second place at the 2022 National High School Cheerleading Championship this past weekend. This was the first time all season the routine was performed with the original

16 athletes on the mat, due to injuries and COVID protocols. According to Spallina, their level of difficulty and execution is unmatched. Seniors Marisa Coniglione, Cassidy Gerace, Giovana Improta and Amber Sanchez led the team through one of the most chaotic seasons imaginable. These incredible athletes have accomplished so much together and are looking

forward to competing together again this weekend at the Suffolk County Championship. “To say that we are proud of this team would be an understatement,” Spallina said. “Coaching these young, focused, committed athletes was an honor, and we will always remember you as our 2022 champions!”

To help shed those extra pounds and improve your overall health, doctors recommend establishing a plan that includes choosing the right foods. Catholic Health Physician Partners primary care physician Bianca Garcia, MD, suggests a visit with your doctor to discuss goals and develop a plan that will have a positive impact on your life for years to come.

Honor Roll Status For Rocky Point Students

A commitment to academics was at the top of the list for eight Rocky Point High School students when they were honored by the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology. Alexa Downs, Ryan

Fryer, Harrison Giordano, Ethan Kraebel, Annalisse Negron, Leanna Pavlicko, Sarah Shackelford and Matthew Wolcson, students at the Edward J. Milliken Technical Center, were named to the firstquarter Honor Roll for

maintaining an average of 90 or above. The Rocky Point School District congratulates these students for serving as role models among their peers.

National Recognition For Rocky Point Freshman Rocky Point High School freshman Fiona Vu is a high 90s student and is now adding three athletic achievements to her high school career. Fiona has been named to Lacrosse Magazine’s top 31 girls national lacrosse watchlist and was

one of only two freshmen named to the High School National Cup All-District team. She was chosen to represent the Class of 2025 at the Under Armour 150, an opportunity to compete with the top players in the country and an application-based

recruiting showcase event for the most advanced girls lacrosse athletes in the 2024 and 2025 classes. The school district congratulates one of Rocky Point’s dedicated and hardworking studentathletes.

According to Gallup’s 2021 Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents

indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many

working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.

The All Kids Fair is pleased to announce that this year’s children’s expo will be taking place in person at a terrific new venue. The 11th annual All Kids Fair will be on Sunday, April 3, from 10-4:30, at Samanea New York Mall, formerly The Source Mall, at 1504 Old Country Road in Westbury. Since 2011, the All Kids Fair has been known for being a fun day for kids and their families to spend time together while also learning about opportunities for Long Island-based companies and organizations of interest to them. In 2020, this was run as a virtual event, complete with exhibitors, many interactive classes, and even a virtual petting zoo, with kids “interacting” with the animals over a Zoom-like interface. According to Barbara Kaplan, director of the expo, “every year, this fabulous children’s expo has many draws for Long Island families, and this year will be no different.” The All Kids Fair will have over 60 vendors plus many kidcentered activities, including “cornhole” (beanbag toss) and soccer. Families can interact in person with exhibitors in a huge space, with vendors set further apart and with the activity areas in designated open areas rather than in breakout rooms. Attendee Kitty Chung raved, “You organized a wonderful event for families.

of qualified volunteers who can pitch in when natural disasters or other emergencies occur. • Donate blood. Blood donations are uniquely valuable to the Red Cross at any time, but the organization noted in early 2022 that it was experiencing its worst blood shortage in more than a decade. The Red Cross notes that the pandemic contributed to a 62 percent decline in college and high school blood drives. So while student donors made up roughly 25 percent of all donors in 2019, they now make up just 10 percent of the donor population. Eligible adults, including students, can contribute to the Red Cross by donating as often as possible. Students back on campus can work with school officials and local Red

Cross chapters to organize blood drives in their school communities. • Pitch in with disaster relief. The American Red Cross notes that it responds to an emergency every eight minutes. Perhaps most remarkable is that 95 percent of the organization’s disaster relief workers are volunteers. The American Red Cross and the Canadian Red Cross rely on volunteers from all walks of

The Red Cross offers an array of courses, including lifeguarding, caregiving and babysitting, swimming and water safety, that train individuals about how to effectively prepare to respond to emergencies. Enrolling in these courses contributes to the mission of the Red Cross by building its potential base

The Impact Of Volunteers Strong communities are able to thrive thanks to the efforts of their residents, including those who give up their free time to volunteer with local charitable organizations. Though the impact of volunteers is often seen through the lens of the projects they help to initiate and complete, there’s no denying just how valuable volunteers are from an economic standpoint. In its 2018 “Volunteering in America Report,” AmeriCorps, an organization dedicated to strengthening communities and fostering civic engagement through service and volunteering, reported that Americans volunteered nearly 6.9 billion hours worth an estimated $167 billion in 2017. Volunteering figures to be even more valuable in the months and years ahead as towns, cities and countries look to recover from a global pandemic that claimed millions of lives and devastated economies big and small. As the world attempts to rebuild itself once the pandemic has ended, volunteers can play vital roles in reestablishing their communities. In fact, many people have already made that recognition. According to data from the professional social networking site LinkedIn, the site’s users had added more than 110,00 volunteer activities to their profiles between the early stages of the pandemic in 2020 and the end of summer 2020.

Paws Of War Provides Long Island Veterans With Free Wellness Care Checkups For Their Service Animals

n support of their mission of giving back to veterans and first responders, nonprofit Paws of War recently hosted their “Hearts and Heroes” event at their headquarters in Nesconset, where they provided 27 service animals with free veterinary care, which included wellness checks, flea and tick medications, vaccinations, bags of dog food and microchipping service.

The pandemic has brought financial challenges to veterans and first responders Many disabled veterans live on low or fixed incomes and their service animal’s medical care is essential so they can provide the level of support and comfort upon which the veterans depend. “As a former veteran, I know how critical and expensive it is to take care of these service animals. They are more than just pets; these animals provide emotional support and tasks for these heroes when it is needed most,” said Kelli

Porti, Veteran & Community Outreach Liaison for Paws of War. Dr. Marissa Altieri, DVM, volunteered her expert veterinary care to the popup clinic and its patients, donating her time to assist Paws of War as a way to give back to the community and support the nonprofit’s mission.   “Veterinarians enable animals of all kinds to live their best life and to be as happy and healthy as possible. Service animals are responsible for their health and well-being and in many cases the lives of their owners. Volunteering my time and medical knowledge for Paws of War and their mobile clinic is my way to honor these veterans for all they have done for our country,” said Dr. Altieri. Hearts and Heroes is part of a continual program, Vets for Vets, hosted by Paws of War that gives back to service men and women by providing free veterinary care for their service animals; their
