Rocky Point Duo Participate In

NYSPHSAA Girls Wrestling Invitational

Rocky Point High School Eagles Ava Capogna and Alexandra Viera each claimed All-State honors while competing in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s inaugural New York State Girls

Wrestling Invitational held on Jan. 27. The two student-athletes were selected to participate out of more than 500 female wrestlers from across New York State in the event that took place at the SRC Arena in Syracuse.

Ava reached All-State status with a fourth place finish at 120 lbs. and Alexandra pinned her way to a New York State Championship, becoming Rocky Point’s seventh state wrestling champion in the process.

Miller Place Debuts Book Vending Machines To Promote Literacy

The Miller Place School District recently unveiled three new vending machines at its schools, but instead of dispensing candy or snacks, these machines are full of brand-new books.

The Miller Place Parent Teacher Organization donated the book vending machines as part of its commitment to increasing literacy and generating excitement around reading. PTO representatives and District officials recently

held a commemorative ribbon cutting ceremony welcoming the vending machines to North Country Road Middle School, Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School and Andrew Muller Primary School.

“Students are already excited about our book vending machines and eager for a chance to use them and get their next favorite book,” said Superintendent of Schools Mr. Seth Lipshie. “Thank

you to our PTO for bringing these to our District and putting in place an amazing plan to boost literacy, reward good behavior and get children enthusiastic about reading.”

Each book costs one token, which students earn by displaying good behavior and performing acts of kindness. Earning tokens is built into the District’s existing character education programs, which reward exemplary students

each month.

Miller Place is one of the first school districts on Long Island to bring book vending machines to its schools. The Miller Place PTO launched the book vending machine program as part of its Literacy Initiative to engage students in learning. One of their goals was to keep children reading and ensure they could always have books at home and not just in school or at the

library. Their research led them to Inchy, the only book vending machine company in the country.

The PTO funded the initiative through the District’s Read-a-Thon, to purchase the Book Vending Machines. The PTO also purchased the books and fully stocked the vending machines. PTO will continue purchasing books for the vending machines in the future.

board includes Kristin Hennig, Suzanne Cloke, Jackie Maloney, Monique Caccavale, Sharda Soohkdeo, Gayle Mancini and Dawn McCarthy.

Town of Brookhaven Councilwoman Jane Bonner presented the District and PTO with proclamations to praise their success in bringing the vending machines to Miller Place.

Rocky Point’s Soup-er Bowl!

Students in Rocky Point’s Frank J. Carisiti Elementary School participated in a “Souper Bowl Challenge.” Second grade students split into two teams, and the competition was on to see who could collect more nonperishable foods

to donate to a local food pantry. To kick off the event, students listened to a readaloud of the story

“Maddi’s Fridge,” by Lois Brandt, where a young girl learns ways to help a friend whose refrigerator isn’t as full as her own.

During the two-week

event, kindergarten and first grade students were invited to bring in goods as well. The school collected over 1,500 items that were donated to the food pantry at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rocky Point.

IBEW Local 25 Member James Patrick Malley Recognized

Suffolk County Legislator

Sarah Anker presented former Rocky Point resident James Patrick Malley, aka Jim Malley, with a proclamation for his dedication to IBEW (International Brotherhood of International Workers), Local 25.

Jim Malley has been dutifully serving the IBEW Local 25 for 43 years, serving as one of only 5 Financial Secretaries in the history of Local 25, where he served until his retirement.

Jim Malley joined the Electrical Worker Apprenticeship directly out of high school. He rose through the ranks, partaking in additional volunteer work, and held positions including Examining Board member, Secretary of the Executive Board and Vice President. He earned his bachelor’s degree during this time.

“Having known Jim throughout my service as a Suffolk County Legislator, it

is an honor to recognize him for his lengthy union service, as well as his involvement in our community.” Legislator Anker said, “Having been

brought up in an IBEW union family, I recognize the commitment and dedication it takes to serve both the union and our community.”

Students in Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School continue to embrace the pillars of character education throughout the school year. Members of the school’s fifth grade Academic Leadership Club use those pillars in the community when they

volunteer their time after school at Friends Kitchen at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rocky Point.

Under the leadership of teacher Mr. Mark Yashowitz, the students helped to serve meals to local residents in need.

Together, they set the tables, organized food, took out trash and assisted with other details that help to create a warm and caring environment for the organization that has been serving meals for more than 25 years.

Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Independence shouldn’t be limited to those who look or live a certain way, so they are proud to provide their dogs and support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation that operate o of these six core values:

Teamwork: They believe in the joyful and transforming power of the partnership between an individual and their dog.

Compassionate Service: They treat everyone they serve with respect and empathy.

Integrity: They do what is right guided by honesty, accountability and sincerity.

Canine Companions uses Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and crosses of these two breeds. Most of their dogs come from their selective breeding program, but occasionally donated puppies are accepted if they meet the strict qualification requirements. Their puppies are raised by volunteers who selflessly take them to classes that teach them basic obedience and house manners. When

the puppies are old enough to enter their professional training program, they head to one of their six regional training centers, located in Northern California, Southern California, Texas, Ohio, New York and Florida.

The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year. Once a dog has completed professional training, it is ready to be matched with a person with disabilities. The match is made at one of their regional training centers during Team Training, a two-week group class.

During Team Training, students learn to manage the service dog’s behavior, to direct the dog to respond to commands it has learned and to assume responsibility for maintaining the health and well-being of the dog.

Each dog can really make all the di erence in the life of its new partner.

A Canine Companions service dog can not only open doors, pick up dropped items, turn on the lights and alert its partner of important sounds, but they can also increase confidence and independence.

Douglas Elliman Realty, one of the largest independent residential real estate brokerages in the United States, announced that it has promoted its Senior Executive Regional Manager of Sales for Hamptons and North Fork, Todd Bourgard, to Chief Executive Officer of Long Island, Hamptons and North Fork, effective immediately. According to Gallup’s 2021 Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents indicated they planned to retire. Three Village Students Head To D.C. For National Science Bowl

The Ward Melville High School Academic Challenges Club is headed to the nation’s capital to compete in the national Science Bowl this spring. The team, made up of Rithik Sogal, Ben Proothi, Benjamin Zhang, Anna Xing and captain Michael Melikyan, qualified for the national tournament after winning first place in the regional competition held at Brookhaven National Lab on Feb. 3

At the regional competition, the Three Village students competed against 23 other teams. They went undefeated in their first four round robin matches and reached the double-elimination finals where they faced a team from Great Neck. Great Neck gave them their first lost, but Ward Melville High School pulled through during the tiebreaker round where they

surged ahead with a rally of several questions and bonus points – an intense, yet exciting way to win.

“We didn’t really know exactly what the score was,” Ben Proothi said. “We just felt like we were ahead by a little bit, so we took the chance and ran out the clock.”

The first-place win qualified the team for an all-expense paid trip to nationals in April. Students will face more than 60 teams in answering questions on several topics including astronomy, biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, earth, computer and general science. This marks the first time in six years Ward Melville High School has qualified for the national tournament. The district wishes the team the best of luck.
