CHIMNEY SWEEP

Oh, the Places You’ll Go When I graduated from high school, I was given the noted Dr. Seuss book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” as a symbolic gesture of good luck toward any and all future pursuits. I since came to learn that this particular gift has been somewhat of a tradition for those moving onward and upward in life - no matter the age.

Of course, the places outlined in the magical land of Seuss are not so much literal; but, rather, a figurative representation of the adventures which await those on the brink of adulthood, the endless potential for exploration and the Great Places which exist just over yonder. The poem reads like a veritable how-to, designed to assist in navigating the twists and turns life is sure to reveal in the years to come.

Nearly 20 years beyond this stepping stone, the words

ring just as true: “Step with care and great tact… and remember that Life’s A Great Balancing Act.” Indeed it is.

I recently listened to a podcast which analyzed the age-old query of whether happiness leads to success, or vice versa. Like the chicken/ egg debate, there is of course no concrete answer; however, most research seems to suggest that happiness is the starting point from which the greatest success blossoms. To be in a positive state is to have a productive, constructive mindset, making growth that much easier.

Delving deeper into the topic, it was stated that those who attempt to find that tedious work/life “balance” are often misdirected in their goal. In reality, these elements will never truly exist in the perfect proportion we strive for, as our existence - and all the elements which affect

it - are in a continuous state of flux. Rather, the objective should be to find a place of fulfillment within, making the necessary adjustments along the way as we navigate those same twists and turns predicted by Dr. Seuss all those years ago.

Taking this lesson into a geographic territory, it was recently brought to my attention that the passport I obtained some five years ago is nearly halfway to its expiration date, having been used precisely once on my very first international flight - first flight anywhere, in fact - to the Emerald Isle. Where to next? The fact is, it doesn’t really matter.

Anywhere will do, so long as it brings pleasure and adventure and a newfound sense of discovery.

The Art League of Long Island’s 11th annual “Go APE” Advanced Placement Student Exhibition features 2-D and 3-D works by 140 students from 38 Long Island High Schools. This is an opportunity for what may be the first of many times these promising young art students will show their work in a professional gallery setting.

The exhibit is on view in the League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery through March 4th. An artists’ reception and awards presentation takes place Sunday March 4th, 1 to 3 p.m.

HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem.

In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic.

This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can!

There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance

to succeed. Below, you will see a photo of Purity Kanyiri, a 5 year-old girl in need of a sponsor. Purity attends nursery preschool at Gikumene Primary and resides at this orphanage. For further details on mentoring Purity or another child, please contact Aida Mann at AidaMann@ optonline.com. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and Aida often travel to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to come along so they can meet firsthand the child they sponsor.

Growing up on Long Island, I realize it is easy to be misled into thinking everyone lives as we do, but that is not the case.

Purity is much more than just someone in the photo on this page; she is one of many people across the world who is reaching out for help. Although there are plenty of ways we can spend $1 a day, using that money to mentor a child in need is truly a priceless experience!

A Partnership Master’s degree students enrolled in Stony Brook University’s (SBU) Occupational Therapy Program recently kicked off their field placements with Options for Community Living Inc. Options’ operates residential programs for adults recovering from mental illness that provide stability, safety and support enabling them to develop their fullest potential for independent living. The agency currently provides supportive housing for

more than 400 Long Islanders recovering from mental illness.

“They really helped me to see what’s blocking my progress,” said Options resident Matt about his experience working with Kristen Czelusniak (Farmingdale), Lauren Flicker (Smithtown) and Susanne Haaser (Selden) – first year students in SBU’s Occupational Therapy Program. “We are happy to help each person work on their individual goals and work toward greater

independence,” stated Haaser. As an occupational therapist, “you can build a relationship with your client/patient. You get to see their gradual progression. It’s more personal than seeing a doctor once or twice a year.”

This is the second year of the Options for Community Living and Stony Brook University collaboration. As part of their field placement, the Occupational Therapy (OT) students work with

groups of residents and engage group members in meaningful activities to improve their skills.

“We interview, evaluate and assess the physical barriers to individual success,” described Czelusniak. “We then establish an Occupational Therapy Profile for each person that details what we call their roles, goals and barriers. It takes into account their occupational experience and history, their interests, routines and environment.”

At Options, the OT students focused on skill development helpful to all of the group participants.

“Last week, we worked on coping skills. Playing a card game is one way to take your mind away from unhealthy thoughts.

Another technique involves becoming aware of negative thoughts and changing them into positive thoughts using a charting method,” said Czelusniak.

“We are delighted to partner with the Stony

Brook students,” said Options for Community Living Executive Director Yolanda Robano-Gross.

“Occupational therapy takes a person-centered approach to intervention which is vital to helping someone overcome barriers to success. These students are helping our residents grow more confident and independent.”

Food can be used to fend off the flu.

Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

A study published in the American Journal of Therapeutics showed that carnosine, a compound found in chicken soup, can help strengthen the body’s immune system and help fight off the flu in its early stages.

Flu shot and medications Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications — which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms — can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza.

Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off.

Stop germ proliferation Germs can be spread easily between persons through direct contact and indirect contact with surfaces sick individuals have touched. Doctors recommend staying home for at least 24 hours after a flu-induced fever has dissipated. Well individuals should avoid contact with sick people.

Frequent hand-washing with soap and water can stop germs from spreading.

When soap and water is not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers can help.

People also should avoid touching their eyes, noses and mouths after being in public places or around someone who is ill.

Rest and restore Those who feel symptoms coming on should begin drinking more liquids to keep the respiratory system hydrated and make mucus less viscous. Remember to get adequate sleep, as a tired body cannot effectively fight the flu virus.

People of all ages should take steps to protect themselves from the flu.

G

erms have gotten a somewhat undeserved reputation. For decades, people have done what they can to avoid these unseemly organisms, thinking that exposure to germs is the single-best way to get and remain sick. Certainly, there are germs that a person would be wise to avoid.

However, not all germs must be avoided.

Germs are tiny organisms that can enter the body through open cuts, the mouth, the nose and the eyes. Germs are found all over the world. The four main types of germs include bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. Bacteria are a type of germ that often get a bad rap but actually may have benefits that outweigh their negatives.

Bacteria are tiny, one-celled creatures that get nutrients from their environments to live. In some instances, that environment is the human body. Bacteria can reproduce inside and outside of the body. While bacteria that cause repeated infections might be considered bad, there actually are a host of good bacteria. Such bacteria help people digest food and protect against gastrointestinal upset,

such as diarrhea. Some bacteria may help people fight off illnesses caused by other bacteria or viruses, says research published in the journal Best Practice & Research Clinical Gastroenterology.

Beneficial bacteria may help stimulate the immune system so that the body is better able to fight off diseases naturally.

People frequently overlook good bacteria in an effort to eradicate bad bacteria, and that can have serious detriments.

Unfortunately, the “antibacterial” products available for cleaning and medicines used for treating bacterial illnesses do not discriminate between good and bad germs. They simply eradicate them all.

Heathline says that this can create an imbalance of bacteria in the body that may lead to harmful bacteria taking over.

Harmful bacteria also may evolve to resist common treatments because of the overuse of antibacterial and antimicrobial medicines and products.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that antimicrobial agents have been used for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases.

Although they’ve helped treat illnesses, these drugs have enabled the organisms they’re meant to destroy to adapt to them, making the drugs less effective. Some bacteria are even resistant to certain antibacterial drugs. The CDC says each year in the United States at least two million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics — with at least 23,000 people dying as a result of these infections.

Various medical sources urge that regular handwashing with plain soap is enough for cleansing. Consuming foods with naturally occurring helpful organisms, such as yogurt, chocolate, feta cheese, pickles and dark chocolate, can help increase the levels of good bacteria in the body. Taking a probiotic supplement also may help, although researchers at the Cleveland Clinic report that there is not enough proof to say for sure.

People should speak with their doctors before taking probiotics or other steps to increase bacteria to make sure they are a wise decision for each individual.

Discomfort due to PAD usually occurs when a person is walking or exercising, because the muscles are not getting enough blood during these activities to meet their needs, says the American Heart Association. Those with diabetes may confuse pain with neuropathy, and the elderly may think pain from PAD is a normal sign of aging and stiffness.

When undiagnosed, PAD can lead to further complications, including increased risk for heart attack, stroke and coronary artery disease. Even amputation of a limb may be necessary. However, PAD is preventable when taking a few steps to improve diet.

According to new research published by the American Heart Association, eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing PAD, which affects an estimated 8.5 million people

in the United States alone. Researchers examined dietary data from roughly 3.7 million men and women, with an average age of 65. Approximately 6.3 percent of the subjects had PAD, and 29.2 percent indicated they ate three or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The discovery was those who reported eating three or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower risk of PAD than those who reported eating less of these foods. The association between fruit and vegetable consumption and lower PAD risk remained even after accounting for age, gender, race, smoking status and various cardiovascular risk factors.

Saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium can contribute to the formation of plaques that lead to PAD. Replacing these foods with more vegetables and fruits that are naturally lower in saturated fats can help, as can increasing dietary fiber consumption. One way to incorporate these types of foods is to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which offers high proportions of legumes, fruits, vegetables; moderate amounts of fish and dairy; and limited meat and meat products.

Safe ways to deal with sinus pressure S

inuses are bony, hollow, air-filled cavities inside the face and skull.

They are located in the lowcenter of the forehead, behind the eyes and in bones behind the nose. CedarsSinai Medical Center says the sinuses lighten the skull and produce a mucus that moisturizes the inside of the nose. Unfortunately, when colds or the flu strike, sinuses may become one of the first spots affected by these illnesses.

congestion and drainage concerns, people may try certain strategies that include flushing the sinuses and thinning the mucus. It is imperative to use safe flushing methods to keep the sinuses healthy.

When the sinuses are working properly, mucus will drain into the nasal passages or out the back of the throat. Most of this drainage goes unnoticed.

However, the American Sinus Institute says that factors such as allergies, illness, weather changes, dehydration and dry air can make the sinus mucus thicker and drainage more difficult.

This is when problems like infection, stuffiness or throat irritation may occur.

Neti pots are among the more popular methods to flushing sinuses. These small teapot-like devices with elongated snouts have become a fixture in many medicine cabinets. Because they are drugfree alternatives, they can be handy for those worried about antihistamines making them drowsy or reacting with other drugs. Neti pots and other nasal irrigation systems use saline to moisten and clear out nasal passages to promote drainage of sinus cavities. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, using these devices improperly can increase one’s risk of infection.

CBS News says that neti pots have even been linked to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, which is otherwise known as the “braineating” amoeba.

only use previously boiled, sterile or distilled water to irrigate. Tap water is not adequately filtered, says the FDA, and may contain low levels of organisms that can stay alive in nasal passages and potentially cause serious infections.

Those who are concerned about nasal irrigation safety may be wise to skip neti pots and use pre-packaged, sterile saline solutions that are bottled for the purpose of alleviating congestion.

However, when prepared water is used in a clean neti pot or other device, these methods can be perfectly safe.

Sinuses can get clogged for many reasons. To free up breathing, people are urged to consult their physicians to learn more about how to safely irrigate their nasal passages.

epetitive behaviors, depression, anxiety, compulsions and even phobias are just a few of the mental health issues millions of people across the globe deal with every day. Symptoms of these conditions may range from mild to debilitating.

The World Health Organization says that one in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders in their lives. Roughly 450 million people currently suffer from such conditions, which puts mental disorders among the leading causes of ill health and disability worldwide.

The Mayo Clinic says CBT talk therapy is performed in a structured setting, with a limited number of sessions. CBT identifies negative thinking so that challenging situations can be viewed more clearly and perceptions changed. While it is a tool in treating mental health disorders, anyone can benefit from CBT, especially those looking to cope with stress or other hurdles.

Mental health is not something people may feel comfortable discussing.

Problems may go untreated for years, and some individuals may use selfmedicating behaviors such as drinking alcohol or using illegal drugs to alleviate their symptoms. Others continue to persist with illnesses when they do not have to.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the more successful methods to address mental health issues.

Cognitive behavioral therapy was developed by psychiatrist Aaron Beck in the 1960s. Beck was doing psychoanalysis at the time and discovered there was a link between thoughts and feelings. Beck discovered people weren’t always aware of automatic thoughts that popped up in their minds, particularly those negative in nature. By identifying these thoughts, a client could overcome certain difficulties.

The National Association of CognitiveBehavioral Therapists defines CBT as a general term for a classification of therapies with certain similarities. It does not exist as a distinct therapeutic technique. CBT is a short-term, goaloriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a practical form to problem-solving, advises Psych Central. The power is in the hands of the person engaging in the therapy. The therapist simply provides the ideas to get started.

CBT is used to treat a wide range of issues, including insomnia, anxiety, depression, alcohol abuse, relationship problems and more. The process involves

How to avoid muscle soreness

M

uscle soreness can affect people from all walks of life. While exercise enthusiasts who work out several times per week may feel like they should be immune to muscle soreness, this potentially painful condition that can adversely affect quality of life can fell even the most ardent fitness fanatic.

Those who find themselves routinely battling muscle soreness can employ the following tactics to feel better and enjoy the fruits of their labors in the gym:

CBT is a balance between placing personal meaning on things and situations as well as the relationship between problems. Many therapists personalize CBT to meet the needs and personality of their patients.

Listen to your body. Daily exercise can greatly benefit long-term health, but it’s important that men and women listen to their bodies, paying attention to any signs that it might be time for a break. Each person is different, but exercise aficionados who recognize any abnormal signs such as unexplained fatigue or cramps may need to take a day off. Bodies need time to recover after a workout.

Individuals who prefer a nonpharmaceutical approach to treating their mental health condition may find CBT can be helpful. Stress or uncomfortable feelings may arise, but therapists can work to avoid uncomfortable situations.

Finding a therapist with whom they feel comfortable can help people make the most of CBT.

Get adequate sleep. Getting enough sleep provides recovery time. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that adults between the ages of 18 and 64 years of age get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. The NSF recommends adults 65 and older get between seven and eight hours of sleep per night..

Don’t overdo it. Pushing a body too hard increases a person’s risk of injury or illness. Muscles that are overtaxed will very likely begin to feel a type of pain known as delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS. The American College of Sports Medicine notes that any type of activity that places unaccustomed loads on muscle may lead to DOMS, but activities such as strength training exercises, walking down hills, jogging, step aerobics and jumping are known examples of contributors to DOMS. Such activities should not necessarily be avoided, but it’s important that men and women not push themselves to the point of overexertion when performing them.

Stay hydrated. Muscle soreness may appear if men and women are not drinking enough water before, during or after their workouts. A dehydrated body’s muscles do not have enough electrolytes, and that can be contributing to the feelings of soreness some exercise enthusiasts feel.

Drink lots of water throughout the day, and don’t forget to bring a water bottle along to the gym when working out.

Muscle soreness can be painful and difficult to deal with. But the solution to address such soreness is oftentimes very simple.

Can students really appreciate the impact a torrential rainstorm has on the land or the intensity and wide-reaching effects of a volcano just by looking at a flat picture in a book?

“No,” says Special Education Teacher Melissa Fraccalvieri at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Jefferson Academic Center, “That’s why we engage in handson project-based learning.”

The unit they are working on in Science class, Earth’s Changing Surface, provides opportunities for the students to simulate

rainstorms to produce landslides or create edible soil horizons to demonstrate the different soil layers (topsoil, subsoil, parent materials, bedrock, and organic materials).

Students constructed both of these projects in class.

“Students really look forward to attending class and getting involved in the different projects we are learning about. They work together, take notes, refer back to them, and participate in the process,” said Fraccalvieri.

students the opportunity to be creative, practice engineering skills, and be cooperative working in groups.”

Sixty students designed rubber band cars. They had to identify a design, brainstorm, construct and test the design, evaluate, and possibly redesign their car, and share their solutions with the class.

The competitive event allowed the students to learn life lessons about taking turns, winning

and losing, and good sportsmanship.

Not everyone would be receiving a medal or trophy.

After tabulating the results, the champion was Sebastian, a William Floyd UFSD student. His car went 59’. First, second, and third place winners were William, East Islip UFSD (55’); Alex, Three Village CSD (54’); and Ryan, William Floyd UFSD (48’) respectively.

The Penny Project

Student Support The Long Island Museum announced recently that Sterling National Bank, with headquarters in Lake Success, is the sponsor of the museum’s annual student art exhibition, Colors of Long Island. This annual exhibition affords a chance for hundreds of students from across Long Island to display their artwork in a museum setting.

“We’re proud to be a sponsor of this inspiring event, which brings together some of the work of the most talented student artists from across Suffolk and Nassau Counties,” said Brian Edwards, Consumer Banking President, Sterling National Bank.

“We are passionate about

educating and sparking the imagination of the next generation, and are committed to helping children from across Long Island use the power of art to positively impact their community.”

The museum will recognize Sterling’s support, along with all the participating students and teachers at artists’ reception on March 4th and April 8th from noon to 4 p.m. The public is invited to attend either or both events. And on Tuesday, March 13th, when the museum is otherwise closed to the public, seniors 62 and older may enjoy a free, self-guided tour of the exhibition from 10 a.m. to noon. Senior

Enhancing Friendships In their annual celebration of Valentine’s Day and 100 days of school, second-graders at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School in the Port Jefferson School District mixed and mingled through four creative centers for the dual festivities.

answers to “something I will love forever is…” and “Before you speak, think and be smart, it’s hard to fix a wrinkled heart,” and other crafts. A huge heart poster was created with 100 reasons why the students love the school that will be showcased in the school’s entry hall. The spirited and colorful event was embraced by all the students.

District Superintendent of Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) David Wicks was February’s guest speaker at the monthly Community Legislative Committee meeting.

Wicks presented Advocacy 101 to a room of 50 attendees who included students, parents, ESBOCES staff, and members of the community interested in answers to questions such as ‘What is advocacy?’ ‘Who can advocate?’, and ‘How do we advocate?’

Wicks’ presentation was timely as many of the students and staff in attendance are preparing to visit Albany for Advocacy Day on February 28th, and they want their voices heard.

Building relationships, knowledge is power, know the logistics, and communicate effectively were four components of advocating identified and discussed. Students from both the Academy LI and ESBOCES chosen to participate in Advocacy

The wild card is reserved for the top wrestlers in the state who do not win their sectional tournament. Evangelista has more than 100 career victories and is a five-time All-County wrestler as well as a county champion. He was a two-time Armstrong champion, two-time LuHi champion, and a Huntington champion, Bellport champion and West Islip champion.

For the initiative, the Three Village Central School District students gathered shoeboxes

and earned monetary donations by completing various chores at home.

The funds were then used to purchase various sundries for both adults and children assisted by the INN. The Nassakeag students decorated and filled the shoeboxes with those items, preparing them for delivery right before the holiday.

In addition to the community service aspect of the project, teachers also tied the effort into the social studies curriculum, as they discussed community with regard to wants and needs.

This effort has been coordinated by Judy Larsen and Joan Sperry for the past several years.

New Officers Installed

The Great South Bay Power Squadron of the United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club, has installed its officers for 2018-2019.

The “Change of Watch” Meeting was on Friday, February 16th at the RusyBohm Post 411 American Legion, Islip.

John P. Pergola, AP, Patchogue, has been installed as Squadron Commander. Installed to serve with Commander Pergola is James M. Milton, JN, of Islip

Terrace, who is the Executive Officer; Kathy E. Matheson, P, of West Islip, is Administrative Officer; Marie A. Wallach, S, of Commack, as Educational Officer; James F. Milton, JN, of Islip Terrace, as Secretary; and Steve Potestio, P, of Holbrook, as Treasurer.

Commander Pergola is a Squadron Advanced Pilot of the United States Power Squadrons and served as the Executive Officer over this last year.

His previous Squadron

responsibilities include being the Administrative Office in 2016 and was the Co-op Charting Chairman from 2014 to 2016. John has received the following educational advancements and awards in the Squadron: grade of Advanced Piloting, Pilot and Seamanship in 2011, and the Basic Boating Course in 2003.

He has also earned Educational Proficiency in 2013 and successfully completed the following educational courses:

Engine Maintenance in 2011, Weather in 2012 and Operations Training in 2014 and 2017. He was presented with the Skipper Award in 2013 and the Pilot Award in 2015. He also successfully completed Marine Electrical Systems in 2013, Marine Communications in 2014, Navigation Systems and Electronic Navigation in 2015, Marine Radar in 2016, and Leadership Development, Emergencies Onboard, and Man Overboard in 2017.

Commander Pergola has earned six Merit Marks with the United States Power Squadrons, which is based on dedication and work that has been accomplished within the Squadron.

He became a Senior Member of the Squadron in 2017 and has served on the Squadron’s Executive Board for the past three years.

Over 125 Squadron members attended the “Change of Watch” Meeting, along with several elected and governmental officials.

Several proclamations were received and presented to Outgoing Commander Arthur Wallach, AP,

Commack. Proclamations were presented by Mr. Ed Wiggins who represented State Senator Phil Boyle, Mr. Tom Owens who represented Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, County Legislator Steve Flotteron, Sergeant Marco Calise who represented Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon, Jr., and Sal Nicosia from State Senator Tom Croci’s office.

Other letters and proclamations presented to Outgoing Commander Wallach were from President George H.W. Bush, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, County Legislator Tom Cilmi, Suffolk County Legislator Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Preservation Commissioner Rose Harvey, the Huntington Town Supervisor Chad Lupinacci and the Town Board, and Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine and the Town Board, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and New York Senator John Flanagan.

Take 2 Simple Steps To Help Protect Your Family (NAPSI)—Many people may not realize that it only takes two minutes for a house to be engulfed in flames. The American Red Cross and its Home Fire Campaign partners are asking everyone across the country to take the

Select an outside meeting spot at a safe distance

Conduct practice drills at least twice a year.

2. Install and maintain

smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms halve your risk of dying in a home fire.

Put them on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms. Test the alarms monthly and change the batteries when needed.

Never disable a smoke alarm. Teach children what an alarm sounds like and what to do if they hear one.

The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers.

The goal is to improve children’s literacy, strengthen communities,

develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers.

It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America.

Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year.

AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service.

Winter Tourism Campaign Launched On the heels of the successful launch of Discover Long Island’s new off-season campaign that launched in December, Long Island is gearing up for a line-up of winter and spring festivals that will attract locals and visitors from around the globe. The region’s annual Winterfest celebration and new The Hamptons Arts Weekend (THAW) are expected to draw thousands during a traditionally slow period.

Great South Bay Power Squadron of America’s Boating Club is pleased to announce a Coastal Navigation Course for the spring of 2018.The course is scheduled to begin on March 15th, at the West Islip Public Library located at 3 Higbie Lane, West Islip. The course will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday evenings. The course will run around 12 weeks.

The course, “Coastal Navigation – Piloting,” covers the basics of Coastal and Inland Navigation.

The course focuses on GPS navigation as a primary navigational tool while covering traditional navigational techniques using a chart and charting tools. Upon completion, students should expect to be comfortable charting and navigating courses to new destinations as well as using paper charts should their electronics fail. The course includes many in-class exercises, developing the student’s skills through hands-on practice and learning. The exam is a take home, and students will have one week to complete it and return it to the instructor.
