Dissecting Nonfiction Stories In preparation of the launch of their new nonfiction unit of study, fourth-graders at Arrowhead Elementary School took part in two interesting and interactive activities within their classrooms.

As they dove into the unit, the students’ classrooms were transformed into “emergency rooms” to provide students the

chance to conduct “text feature surgery.” Dressed in hair caps, face masks and aprons, the students operated on different magazines to find helpful nonfiction text features.

Once identified, they collected the pieces and worked to determine their purpose.

The following class, the rooms were once again transformed – this time

into a Book Café. During the event, students “tasted” a variety of nonfiction books and topics, sampling them to determine if they’d like to read them during their nonfiction unit. All dogs that will be considered must be rescued/ shelter dogs, social, healthy, eager to please, good with other dogs and good with people.

You can also donate to Paws of War to help them carry out their mission.

Individuals can donate on their website or by mail. There is truly no donation amount that is too small. They would not be able to carry out their mission of helping both ends of the leash without the generosity of their supporters. All donations are taxdeductible.

Rocky Point Student-Artists As a result of their exceptional artistic talents, Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School students Caliope O’Rourke and John Tringone had their artwork selected for showcase in this year’s Colors of Long Island Art Show through the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook.

Caliope’s piece was a fall landscape refection. Within her art class, she had learned that a landscape is

a picture of land and that reflection is symmetrical.

They had studied Georgia O’Keefe’s works from her paintings of Lake George, in particular her use of warm and cool colors, which were the inspiration for her landscape.

John’s artwork was a water color still life. In preparation for the project, John learned about the concept of perspective in a drawing and how objects overlap in a space

and perceive that idea.

The students had studied famous artist Paul Cezanne and how he achieved the idea of perspective in his works.

Both students created their submissions with the help of school art teacher Laura Goelz. Their pieces will be on exhibit for public view in the museum’s visitors center from Feb. 22-April 7, 2019.

As a way to bring their classroom lessons on satire and comedy out of the textbook and into the real world, Ward Melville High School Advanced Placement Literature & Composition students recently visited with a 2015 alumna and learned about her experience as an intern at Saturday Night Live.

During the event, Ward Melville graduate Rose Kelso discussed the process of bringing the show to

fruition each week, which is a highly collaborative effort between the writers, guest hosts and performers. The class also discussed the elements of comedy and satire, more specifically.

Student Gabrielle Barry asked what Ms. Kelso has learned through experience, and she responded that it is important to be patient with oneself in seeking opportunities, and to be

confident, it’s okay not to know everything right away, but be patient in order to learn and grow.

Another student, Bobby Rau asked what makes the perfect joke, to which Ms. Kelso replied, timing, knowing your audience and understanding the situation.

She added that comedy is based on contrasts (situational, ironic) and that comedic timing is measured in “beats” making the delivery

of a joke as important as what is actually said.

This Vegetarian Reuben Sandwich is a fun take on the traditional Jewish-style favorite, but swaps out fatty corned beef for stir-fried veggies!

Remove swiss cheese covered bread and plate the slices, with each slice facing up. Spread one or two tablespoons of Thousand Island Dressing onto each slice. Scoop sauerkraut onto each slice above dressing. Lastly, scoop drained veggie mixture onto bread and close sandwich.

Preparation Combine diced portobello mushrooms, spinach leaves and sliced onion into a frying pan that has 1/4 cup water at the bottom. Trun on high until stove gets going. Then reduce heat to low

The Right Foods Can Fight Inflammation T he human body and its immune system excels at fighting foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses.

Signaling chemicals called interleukins tell cells whether they are needed to fight illness or they should wait in the wings.

While these immune defenders are doing their jobs, soreness, fatigue and swelling can occur — the natural side effects of an immune system response — but will soon dissipate.

However, many people deal with immune systems that are consistently revved up, even when no invaders are present.

This is the problem with many chronic diseases and immune system dysfunction. Unfortunately, the inflammation that is a hallmark of immune defense becomes a daily problem that may result in chronic pain and other complications. What many people may not realize is that the foods that they are putting into their bodies may exacerbate inflammatory responses, while others may help keep inflammation at bay.

People with rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, Hashimoto’s, and other chronic illnesses may find that turning to the right diet can tame inflammation and other symptoms. Recently, many health experts, including Dr. Barry Sears, founder of the Inflammation and Research

Foundation and author of the “Zone Diet,” and Dr. Andrew Weil, who offers the AntiInflammatory Food Pyramid, have begun to tout certain foods that are purported to reduce inflammatory response over an extended period of time.

As beneficial as some foods can be, it’s important to note that individuals are unique and certain foods may produce a particular response in some but not in others. Systematically isolating certain foods can help paint a picture of foods that can be problematic. But generally speaking, refined carbohydrates, sugar-sweetened beverages, fried foods, and processed meats may increase inflammation, advises Harvard Health Publishing. Conversely, certain foods and beverages that have been identified as reducing inflammation for many people. These include: tomatoes, olive oil, green leafy vegetables and cruciferous vegetables; nuts, like almonds and walnuts; fatty fish, berries, avocados, green tea, peppers, grapes, turmeric and dark chocolate.

Including these foods in one’s daily diet may help to relieve the pain, bloating and fatigue associated with inflammation. It is important to speak with a doctor before

making any significant dietary changes.

Generally speaking, a diet full of diverse, antioxidant-rich foods can provide relief for those with various levels of inflammation.

Explore Benefits of HIIT Fitness T here are new workout programs popping up in fitness centers around the U.S. that are allowing fitness-minded individuals to test their mettle. Recently, one of the more popular fitness regimens is HIIT, and it’s probably available at a fitness center near you.

HIIT is an acronym for High Intensity Interval Training. The American College of Sports Medicine says HIIT held steady among the top fitness trends for 2017 and 2018. The crux of HIIT workout routines are sustained, intense exercise followed by active recovery periods. WebMD says that HIIT can be used with any type of popular cardio workout, including rowing, jumping rope, speed walking, stair climbing, and more. Many gyms also build programs around HIIT that may include “boot camp” type workouts that utilize equipment or exercises using people’s own body weight to burn calories.

A typical HIIT training session lasts about 30 minutes. Workouts are performed at 80 to 90 percent of a person’s maximal heart rate, which is the number of times the heart will beat in a minute without overexerting itself. Recovery periods are not entirely rest. They tend to be shorter than active periods, and come in at around 40 to 50 percent of the maximal heart rate.

In essence, a lower intensity workout as “rest.” The workout will alternate between the working and recovery periods.

HIIT workouts can be effective at boosting your metabolism and helping people burn calories faster. They also help to develop physical endurance. The science behind the workouts has to do with EPOC, or excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. The fitness lifestyle resource Daily Burn says that HIIT will help burn more fat and calories than regular steady workouts because EPOC\0x2008 is an oxygen shortage in the body that occurs during the intense portions of the HIIT workouts.

During recovery, the body will ask for more oxygen, creating an after burn and a metabolic disturbance. The fitness guide, Fitness Blender, states that the intense training will result in the body burning calories at a higher rate for up to 48 to 72 hours after exercising. This means that the benefits of HIIT training continue even while you are, say, relaxing on the couch watching your favorite Netflix show later on that day. This type of workout regimen is especially good for those in relatively good shape, who need to drop a large amount of weight relatively quickly. For example, a new mother looking to drop

her baby weight.

People may see greater results by doing HIIT workouts three times a week for half of the duration than they would if they were performing more typical workouts more frequently. For those whose schedules are already jam-packed, HIIT can be a more efficient way of exercising.

HIIT requires a strong baseline fitness lev-

el, so beginners or those who have been out of the gym for some time are urged to start slowly. Also, since HIIT causes high demand on the heart and respiratory systems, it is essential to discuss the regimen with a doctor to find out if HIIT is a smart choice depending on your personal medical history. Once you are medically in the clear, consult with a qualified trainer at your local gym to find the best routine for you.

eart disease is a formidable foe.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease accounts for nearly 25 percent of all deaths in the United States each year.

Issues relating to the heart affect both men and women, and an estimated 15 million adults in the U.S. have coronary heart disease (although many don’t know), the most common type of heart disease. Heart disease is not exclusive to the United States, as the Heart Research Institute says that every seven minutes in Canada someone dies from heart disease or stroke.

Such statistics are disconcerting, but they can serve as a wake-up call that compels people to prioritize their heart health.

Fortunately, heart disease is often preventable, and people can employ various strategies to reduce their risk.

If you smoke, stop smoking right now.

One of the best things to do to protect the heart is to stop smoking. The Heart Foundation indicates that smoking reduces oxygen in the blood and damages blood vessel walls. It also contributes to atherosclerosis, or a narrowing and clogging of the arteries. Smoking is, essentially, a fast track to heart disease.

Eat healthy fats. When eating, choose polyunsaturated and unsaturated fats and avoid trans fats as much as possible. Trans fats increase one’s risk of developing heart disease by clogging arteries and raising LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. Instead, you want to up your HDL (good) cholesterol with food like: olive oil, avocado, nuts, seeds and some fatty fish like salmon or sardines. Read food labels before buying anything at the store.

Keep your mouth clean. Studies show that bacteria in the mouth involved in the development of gum disease can travel to the bloodstream and cause an elevation in your C-reactive protein, a marker for blood vessel inflammation. Brush and floss twice daily, and be sure to schedule routine checkups with your dentist at least two times per year.

Get adequate shut-eye. Ensuring adequate sleep can improve your heart health. One study found that young and middle-age adults who regularly slept seven hours per night had less calcium in their arteries (a sign of early heart disease), compared to those who slept five hours or less, or those who slept nine hours or more. Your heart craves a level of homeostasis to stay healthy.

Adopt healthy eating habits. Changes to your diet, including eating more fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein, can help you lose and maintain a healthy body weight, improve your cholesterol levels and reduce blood your pressure — leading to a healthier heart.

Embrace physical activity. Regular, moderate exercise is great for the heart. It can occur at the gym, playing with the kids outdoors, taking the dog on long walks or hikes, or even taking the stairs at work.

Any way you slice it, your heart craves a minimum of 20-30 minutes of physical activity per day.

A healthy heart begins with daily habits that promote long-term heart health, and the sooner you begin a heart healthy lifestyle, the greater your chances of staving off heart disease.

Two simple things can go a long way toward ensuring that you’re not sharing bacteria along with your special treats -keeping your hands clean

and making sure you are cleaning them correctly.

Just as important is making sure you are covering the areas of your hands that are likely to have the greatest density of germs. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, these include the area under your fingernails, your palms, the backs of your hands and the

“webbing” in between your fingers.

“Put a squirt of gel or soap in the palm of one hand and dip the fingertips of the opposite hand into the pools before spreading over other areas, then repeat with the other hand and fingertips,” says Cooper. “It only takes a few seconds and you will be getting at where the majority of germs are.”

Proper hand hygiene is one of the cornerstones in preventing the spread of infection in a health care setting. Even if the caregiver says they washed

their hands right before coming into the room, don’t feel embarrassed to ask them to do it again in front of you.
