This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade.

Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness.

These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program.

Too Much Sleep Can Be Harmful

Lack of sufficient sleep is a problem for millions of people across the globe. But what about too much sleep? Though busy men and women might think it’s impossible to get too much sleep, excessive sleep is nothing to joke about.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night (the NSF notes that a small percentage of people may need 10 hours of sleep per night).

People who routinely sleep more than seven to nine hours may have an underlying health concern. For example, the NSF notes that a recent study found that routinely sleeping more than 10 hours per night can be linked to metabolic syndrome. The Mayo Clinic says metabolic syndrome refers to a cluster of conditions that occur together and increase a person’s risk for serious health issues, including heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

Obesity, headache and back pain are some

additional potential side effects of excessive sleep.

The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School notes that genetics and age are significant factors in determining the amount of sleep healthy individuals need.

However, young adults should resist the notion that they need less than seven hours of sleep per night because they’re young, while older adults should similarly avoid thinking that they need more sleep simply because they’re aging. As the NSF guidelines suggest, the sweet spot for healthy adults is typically between seven and nine hours of sleep per night.

A good night’s rest is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. But adults must recognize that excessive amounts of sleep can be just as detrimental as inadequate sleep. Individuals can speak with their physicians to determine their specific sleep needs.

Health & Wellness 3 Tips When Reading Nutrition Facts Labels Much about trips to the grocery store has changed since many adults were children. Many grocery stores are considerably larger than they were as recently as 20 years ago and now sell everything from traditional grocery store fare to clothing to items one might expect to find in a hardware store.

Another aspect of grocery shopping that has changed over the years is the groceries themselves.

Nutrition labels have been around for decades, though today’s labels contain considerably more information than they did in years past. As a result, many shoppers, even those who make sure to read product labels before placing items in their shopping carts, may not know exactly what they’re buying.

Nutrition labels can be complicated, and ingredients that are beneficial for some consumers may be harmful to others. Seniors and people with existing medical conditions should always discuss their diets with their physicians, asking if there are specific foods they should avoid or seek out. In addition, the following three tips, courtesy of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, can help consumers understand nutrition labels and make sound choices.

1. Read the serving size information Serving size information on nutrition labels indicates both the recommended serving size and the number of servings contained in t he package.

The AND recommends that consumers compare the portion size they actually eat to the serving size listed on the label. Some people may consume more than one serving size per meal, and that can affect just how much of each ingredient,

including ingredients like sodium that can be harmful if consumed in excess, a person is eating.

2. Pay attention to calorie count Nutrition labels contain calorie counts, which can help people maintain healthy weights. Being at a healthy weight has been linked to a reduced risk for various conditions, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Nutrition labels list calories per serving, so people trying limit their calorie intake to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight should pay particular attention to this information.

3. Let percent daily values guide you The AND notes that percent daily values, which are listed as “DV” on food labels, help consumers determine how particular

foods fit into their daily meal plans. These values are based on a 2,000 calorie per day diet, though some people may need more or fewer calories than that.

In addition, some people may need more than the 100 percent recommended daily value of a given nutrient.

Consumers should discuss their specific needs regarding calorie and nutrient intake with their physicians. For those advised to heed the daily values recommendations, ingredients that are listed at 5 percent DV or less are considered low, while those that are 20 percent DV or higher are considered high.

The AND recommends aiming low for ingredients like sodium, saturated fat and cholesterol, while high in vitamins, minerals and fiber can be beneficial.

Ward Melville High School’s talented varsity Science Olympiad team recently competed in the Eastern Long Island Regional Tournament, the largest regional competition in New York State, and placed first

Most parts of North America will begin Daylight Saving Time on March 8, 2020, at 2:00 a.m., respective to their time zones. In the European Union, “Summer Time” begins at 1:00 a.m. on the last Sunday in March, which this year will be March 29. The change is made at the same absolute time across all time zones respective to Greenwich Mean Time, which also is known as Universal

Time. One reason DST is still practiced in many areas of the world is to push an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening and make better use of this daylight. There are various origin stories linked to DST, including one that involves Benjamin Franklin. DST also has been touted as a way to save resources during times of war or as a means to helping farmers be more prosperous.

However, despite the

Some of these DST naysayers say switching the clocks twice a year can negatively affect the body’s natural circadian rhythm. A Whole New World at the end of sixth grade students are required to select one of three languages—Spanish, French or Italian—to pursue throughout the seventh grade.

To prepare NCRMS’s young students as they begin their course selections, the FLNHS led in-depth presentations, detailing various aspects of what each language course offers, such as the study of

basic vocabulary and the food and other traditions of the culture. Miller Place’s sixth graders gained valuable knowledge about what each language option entails, providing them with a solid foundation to begin their cultural education and confidence as they finalize their schedules for the 20202021 academic year.

World Languages. She demonstrated how using film/cinema in the classroom can achieve cultural competency and highlighted the United Nation’s “Plural+” youth video organization as a source to obtain materials for classroom instruction.

In preparation for her presentation, she introduced her students to Plural+ which resulted in the creation of the video “Acceptance Has No Language”. This video, relating to social awareness and diversity, was produced in its entirety by

students in Ward Melville’s French Honor Society. It is currently in the final editing stage and will be submitted to Plural+ at the end of the school year.

Ms. Quiros has been a member of ACTFL for the past five years and is currently serving as secretary of the Cinema Special Interest Group.

She believes the annual conference is important for professional growth as it allows the sharing of ideas and resources for teachers and increases their knowledge and awareness of National Standards.

As part of the District’s efforts to create a deeper understanding of and appreciation for humanity and culture,

“Our class decided to help the community this month by collecting for our Souper Bowl as part of

our Character Education program in class,” Mrs. Vieira said of the students who are continuing to learn beliefs and behaviors that are important for them to have as responsible citizens.

Stony Brook Sweeps Ethics Event On Feb. 1, The Stony Brook School Ethics Bowl team won the Long Island High School Ethics Bowl for the third year in a row. This event takes place at Hofstra University annually and challenges students to discuss, and break down, current ethical and real-life issues.

This year, students had to address hotly contested topics such as whether families should be allowed to involuntarily commit

their drug-addicted loved ones or not. “ Remaining unified is especially difficult in the Ethics Bowl,” said team advisor and Academic Dean Dr. Sean Riley, “because it’s a competition designed to force people with different convictions to discuss hotly contested moral and political issues.

Even within our teams, viewpoints can vastly differ; but students had to learn how to humble

themselves, hear each other out, and forge a pathway forward together.”

Both Stony Brook teams went undefeated that day, finishing first and second in the opening rounds and qualifying for the semifinals—setting up an unprecedented sweep of the event by a single school. The team will be heading to the National High School Ethics Bowl competition in April.

Preparing For Lent And Easter The Christian tradition of Lent is celebrated across the globe by many different denominations of the faith.

Lent is a 40-day period of sacrifice that begins on Ash Wednesday and culminates with the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.

Lent is designed to help Christians prepare for Easter through prayer, repentance of sins, almsgiving, denying the ego, and putting and end to sinful practices.

Fasting is a component of Lent, as is abstinence from certain behaviors.

In fact, in some Western countries, Catholics have been encouraged to adopt forms of abstinence that do not involve food and

drink during Lent. All actions serve as forms of self-denial to mirror the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for his people.

Abstaining from alcohol is not mandatory during Lent. That might be traced to ancient times, when wine and other forms of alcohol were safer to drink than pathogen-filled water sources. But many people now choose to give up alcohol for Lent.

Today, fasting is primarily reserved for Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent, including Good Friday. Adherents may opt to fully fast, but most only eschew meat and poultry as a nod to selfdenial, opting for seafood and vegetarian fare instead.

While much focus is placed on what is denied during Lent, it can be an ideal time to reflect on what is gained by living a life in which God is first and foremost. Spending more time in prayer and away from trivial distractions can be a way to live a more faithful life during Lent and beyond. In addition, aspiring to be more Christlike during Lent can make this special season even more powerful. During Lent, Christians can make a concerted effort to help the poor, work with a charity or volunteer at their church.

Lent is a solemn time, but one that can bolster one’s faith.

During the workshop, Judge Mayer discussed criminal procedure, evidentiary issues and other important aspects of arguing a criminal case.
