The Great Kindness Challenge Comes To Rocky Point When visitors enter Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School, they will likely notice many more happy faces and an increase in caring gestures. The school recently joined thousands of schools from around the country to participate in the Great Kindness Challenge.

“We’re so excited to bring this event to FJC,” said guidance counselor Jamie Adamski, who

coordinated the events throughout the week – morning announcements with kindness quotes and messages, and a bingo game, in which each class worked together to accomplish at least five acts of kindness from a checklist. As the students succeeded at bingo, their names were added to hearts surrounding a bulletin board carefully constructed in the main hallway. An

“appreciation station” was set up near the cafeteria where students could write positive messages on Post-it notes. To encourage everyone to show their school pride, staff and students wore their FJC or Rocky Point shirts and school colors, and to culminate the week, the message “Be Kind” took over the building as staff members donned their colorful “Be Kind” T-shirts.

While you and your family are most likely prepared for the winter with warm clothing and shovels, what about your pets? Here’s how you can help your furry family members brave the cold and be safe all winter.

The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.

They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event.

This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole.

This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade.

Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness.

These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program.

The upcoming spring season

for both programs will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet!

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Region 1 I FISH NY program will hold an Indoor Ice Fishing seminar on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, from 7 to 9 p.m., DEC Regional Director Carrie Meek Gallagher announced today. The seminar will take place at the DEC Region 1 Headquarters located at 50 Circle Road, Stony Brook, NY 11742.

“Despite the recent warm

weather on Long Island so far this winter, New York State offers many world class ice fishing locations,” DEC Regional Director Meek Gallagher said. “This clinic will be a great introduction to equipment needed for ice fishing, important safety precautions, and fish handling techniques.”

The seminar is geared for beginners as well as experienced anglers wanting to break into the

great sport of ice fishing.

DEC’s I Fish New York staff will cover ice safety, equipment, fish handling, and rules and regulations.

The course will prepare participants to safely ice fish across New York State.

Participation will be capped at 30 people.

The Studio in Art students, accompanied by art teacher Nancy Randazzo, viewed the works of more than 20 artists who received support from the New York State Council on the Arts and New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships who have recorded significant achievements in their artistic careers.

This past Christmas, the set up what was that of a toy store, both new and used toys were on display and many parents were able to come in and shop. To meet other immediate needs for its neighbors throughout the year, a back corner of the store serves as a food pantry.

The shelves often have bread, cereal, baby food and snacks.

Brittany and Debbie, however, don’t stop there.

They have proactively and aggressively gone to many of our school districts to find the underserved, the hungry and those in need of assistance. They’ve teamed up with some districts to join various programs and are utilizing these opportunities to feed hundreds of hungry children each month.

In 2015, a local grandmother suddenly had to take on full-time care of her young granddaughter and for this, she was not prepared. Debbie Loesch and her daughter Brittany turned to social media to simply ask random people if they had the items that were needed and if they be willing to donate them to this woman in her moment of need. Various people within certain Facebook groups did not take well to these requests and the motherdaughter duo caught some very negative backlash.

Believing that there would be many people willing to help if they knew of the immediate need, they created a new Facebook Page: Angels of Long Island. With the purest of intention, neighbors helping neighbors, once again they asked friends and family “Can you help this woman, a neighbor, in need?” Quickly about 200 people connected to their page and within one week the woman’s needs were meet. And so it began, Neighbors Helping Neighbors.

Knowing there were so many others in need, Debbie and Brittany started collecting whatever people were willing to donate.

They stored it throughout their house and yard. As the

stockpile grew, they used a trailer, sheds, tents and tarps to not allow anything to go to waste knowing at some time, someone may need it.

They were now consistently matching up many people to what they needed and knew they were on to something big.

In 2017 Angels of LI opened a 3800 square foot thrift store located at 350-23 E. Main Street in Patchogue.

Now they have all their donations displayed in a store setting. When someone is in crisis or moving from crisis to something more stable, they can come in and simply shop for what they need. Bed linens, furniture, pots and pans, clothes (within some guidelines of course) but all for free! The thrift store is open to the public to come purchase items as well. The money raised from sales directly supports the many other services their outreach program provides.

With the help of their now over 60,000 followers, the Patchogue location hosts a few annual events all in line with their mission. The Angels, who are run solely by volunteers, turn their entire parking lot into an extension of the store. They set up a system for families during their “Back to School” event to go through and choose many items such as backpacks, school supplies, clothes, and shoes.
