In recognition of Black History Month, Optimum, in conjunction with the Smithsonian Channel™, is sponsoring the Make Your Mark video contest for high school students.

The contest provides an opportunity for students to reflect on how they can make a lasting “mark” by submitting a proposal and creating a video that documents their idea on how to incite positive change within their school and community.

Students with the winning video will be awarded $2,500 for a school or community project.

As part of the contest, students will view the Smithsonian Channel documentary Breath of Freedom that details the experiences of AfricanAmerican GIs who helped rebuild Germany at the end of World War II and experienced equality for the first time overseas. Just as the soldiers featured in the documentary helped ignite the Civil Rights Movement, students can document their unique “mark” for positive change in their own video.

Winter Survival Tips Many hazards come with winter driving, but the possibility of being stranded may be one of the worst. If you get stranded while driving, here are some tips geared at helping you survive: Plan Your Route: Don’t use back roads to avoid traffic or save time. Take heavily traveled routes where more people can spot you. Also, main roads are the first areas that rescue workers will reach in emergencies. If you must drive, travel during the day and don’t travel alone. Tell family or friends where you are going, the route you will take and when you expect to arrive.

Stay With Your Vehicle: While it will get cold, your vehicle is your best protection against wind and exposure.

We Are All Destined For Something

Last week, with the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics in full swing, I made the realization that, much like those athletes, we are all destined for something.

Whether it is a Gold Medal or last place, we are all put on this Earth for some reason. We may not always come out on top, but it is crucial to acknowledge that everything happens for a reason.

This same idea can be applied to our everyday lives. Although we may not be Olympians, we are crusaders in our own right. Each day, we are training ourselves to excel much like Shaun White and Shani Davis; we are trying to attain perfection.

There is, however, no such thing as perfection when it comes to humanity. As demonstrated by these two stars, even professionals are mortal.

When we do succeed, it is essential to recognize that we may have gotten lucky. There will always be someone just a little bit faster or a few inches taller. Nothing is certain, and we must earn what comes our way. It is all part of the master plan, and sometimes things work out. There is no such thing as a guarantee. Even Gold Medalists don’t get perfect scores.

With this being said, it is perfectly understandable that we may fail in our

everyday lives. There is no guarantee that practice will lead to greatness. We can still fall short of our goals.

I try to implement this mindset into every facet of my persona. With college decisions steadily flowing in, I realize that I am not perfect. It would be irrational to think that I would be accepted to all of the colleges that I applied to. Rejection is an essential part of life, as losing is a key element of the Olympics.

Much like the Olympians, I know that every failure occurs for a reason.

Although on a much smaller scale, my futile pursuit of excellence is a model of their determination, perseverance and trial.

Submitted By Michael Sceiford - Edward Jones Port Jefferson With tax season upon us, it’s time to focus on your tax return, which is due on April 15. As you work on your return, you may see some areas in which you’d like to make some changes for 2014 and beyond — and one of these areas may be your investments. Specifically, can you find ways to become a more “tax-smart” investor?

You may be able to benefit from taking the following steps: “Max out” on your IRA. Depending on your income level, you may be able to deduct some or all of your contributions to a traditional IRA. And your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis.* (Roth IRA contributions are not deductible, but your earnings and eventual distributions will be tax-free, provided you meet certain conditions.) You can contribute to your IRA for 2013 right up until the tax-filing deadline on April 15. And for 2014, the annual IRA contribution limit remains at $5,500 (or $6,500, if you’re 50 or older).

Boost your 401(k) contributions. You generally contribute pre-tax dollars to your 401(k), so the more you put in, the lower your taxable income. (Depending on your employer, you may even be able to make Roth contributions to your 401(k) plan.) So, every time your salary goes up, you may want to consider increasing your 401(k) contributions. For 2014, you can put in up to $17,500 to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan, such as a 457(b) or 403(b). If you’re 50 or older, you can add another $5,500 on top of the contribution limit.

Consider tax-advantaged investments. If you can afford to put money away even after you’ve reached the limits on your IRA and your 401(k), you might want to consider other tax-advantaged investments. For example, you may be able to benefit from investing in municipal bonds, which provide interest payments that are free of federal taxes, and, in some cases, free of state and local taxes, too. (Some municipal bonds may be subject to the alternative minimum tax.) Another investment possibility is a fixed annuity, which offers tax-deferred earnings growth. Your financial and tax advisors can help you determine which, if any, taxfavored investments may be suitable for your individual needs.

Avoid frequent buying and selling. Many people constantly buy and sell investments, hoping to boost their returns. Such frequent trading is usually ineffective, however — and it can also be “taxing.” If you sell an investment that you’ve held for one year or less, you may have to pay the short-term capital gains rate, which is the same as your ordinary income tax

Remain in your vehicle where rescuers are most likely to find you.

Abandon your car only as a last resort. A single person walking through the snow is much harder to find than a stranded vehicle.

Prepare Your Vehicle: Make sure your vehicle is winterized and in good driving condition. Keep your gas tank full. This will keep the fuel line from freezing and allow you to run the engine for heat for a longer time.

Pack A Winter Survival Kit: The kit should contain nonperishable food, water, warm clothes, blankets, tea light candles (for warmth), waterproof matches, flares, tools or a multi-function knife, a small mirror (for signaling), brightly colored cloth/plastic (for visibility), tow chain/ strap and a small pot for melting snow (to drink).

Use The Heater Sparingly: Running your engine and heater for ten minutes every hour is enough to keep you warm while also conserving fuel. While the engine is running, slightly open a downwind window for fresh air.

Make sure to keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Keeping Moving: At least once an hour, vigorously move your arms, hands, legs, feet and toes to improve circulation and keep warm. Important: Don’t exercise enough to get hot or sweaty. Wet clothes lose insulation value, making you susceptible to hypothermia. Also, avoid use of cigarettes or alcohol as these will reduce your ability to stay warm.

Stay Hydrated: The keys to winter survival are to stay dry, hydrated and warm. Drink fluids sparingly over time to

Lunch Bags Of Love In an effort to bring the comforts of home to those who serve our country, second-grade students in Stacy Iberger’s class at Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School created special care packages for soldiers this February.

During the event, Lunch Bags of Love, the students, with the help of several parents and staff members, filled care packages for two troops serving in Afghanistan and one soldier with a special connection to the Rocky Point School District.

“The project helps the students have a deeper appreciation that the world

is a lot bigger than their local community,” said Ms. Iberger, who has organized the program for six years.

“It also provides them the chance to give thanks to those who help to protect our nation and provide some comforts of home to those serving.”

In addition to its philanthropic benefits, the project also included a literacy component as each package included a handwritten letter from a second-grader. After brainstorming topic ideas, the students crafted letters to the soldiers, thanking them for sacrifices made for their country and

extending their well wishes for a speedy return home.

They then decorated paper bags with hearts and patriotic themes before filling them with valentine candy, pencils, soap and other toiletries. Parents and students donated the items collected for the packages.

As a special token of appreciation for the community service project, Councilwoman Jane Bonner presented each student with a commemorative certificate at the conclusion of the event.

Penning A Winning Essay Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School fifthgrader Elana Gold was named one of four winners in the Take A Duck To Class essay contest sponsored

by TD Bank and the Long Island Ducks. More than 1,000 essays were written and submitted to this year’s contest. Each essay was 250 words or less and focused on “Why My Community Is Important To Me.” In her essay, Elana focused on her

community’s ability to come together to help others, the many support organizations and its schools. “As a community, we make a good team,” she wrote. “We come together as a community, but also as a family. I absolutely love living here and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”

As one of the lucky winners, Elana earned a $50 Visa gift card from TD Bank and a visit from L.I. Ducks manager Kevin Baez and team mascot

QuakerJack. During a special assembly program, Elana read her essay in front of her fifth-grade peers before Mr. Baez spoke about his career and the importance of working hard in school. After the program, Elana’s class had the chance to play whiffle ball with the special guests and received a drawstring backpack and school supplies from the contest organizers.

Alzheimer’s Education present The New LongTerm Care Landscape — Benefiting From The Changes.

This year’s luncheon keynote speaker, sponsored by Royal Healthcare Services, is Emmy-award winner Barry Petersen, CBS News Correspondent and author of Jan’s Story: Love Lost to the Long Goodbye of Alzheimer’s.

Mr. Petersen will be discussing the book and his many experiences while taking care of his wife, who struggled with youngonset Alzheimer’s Disease at the age of 55 before her passing. He is an avid

supporter for Alzheimer’s research and donates 10% of the proceeds from his book to Alzheimer’s programs and research.

Following the luncheon will be more breakout sessions, an ice cream social, and a plenary session showing/screening of the film The Genius of Marian.

The movie documents the filmmaker’s mother, Pam White, through her early stages of Alzheimer’s Disease.

BAND FESTIVAL - On February 2nd, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School band students Joseph Kaming-Thanassi, Calla Kelly-Renda, Troy Lov and David Moir, along with students from the Hauppauge, Miller Place, Patchogue-Medford, Sayville and West Islip school districts, participated in the 56th Annual Mid-Island Band Festival.

The event concluded with an evening performance conducted by David Soto at Hauppauge High School.

Help For Teens Available

Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on teenagers.

Help is available at most public libraries in the form of a DVD. Some libraries have an older video format.

“It’s meant to encourage teens, to tell them that there is hope out there,” said Professor Peter Ramig of the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Ramig is one of three nationally recognized experts appearing in the DVD produced by the nonprofit Stuttering Foundation.

experiences with stuttering and what they found to be helpful. They talk openly about the ridicule they faced from classmates and how their stuttering affects their lives.

“We really try to emphasize the embarrassment and frustration factor, and we think teens will relate to that,” adds Ramig. He appears in the DVD along with speech-language pathologists Dr. Barry Guitar of the University of Vermont and Dr. Hugo Gregory of Northwestern University.

The three experts answer questions about stuttering, refute myths and misconceptions, and present examples of therapy sessions showing how stuttering can be

reduced.

More than three million Americans stutter, yet stuttering remains misunderstood by most people,” said Jane Fraser, president of the Stuttering Foundation.

“Myths such as believing people who stutter are less intelligent or suffer from psychological problems still persist despite research refuting these erroneous beliefs.”

The Port Jefferson School District’s men’s track team captured the League Championship title at the Suffolk County Winter Track League Championships held at Suffolk Community College on January 25th.

The team won with a score of 125 points, defeating second-place Shoreham-Wading River who scored 86 points and third-place finishers Bayport-Blue Point who finished with 84 points.

Seniors Danny Gross and Justin Bove helped lead the team to victory. Danny won the 55-meter hurdles, placed third in the long jump and helped the 4x200 relay team complete a second-place finish. Justin placed first in the 600-meter run, second in the 55-meter dash and helped the 4x400 relay team to a second-place finish.

Junior James Burke was a triple winner with victories in the 1000-meter run, 1600-meter run and the 4x800 relay for which he was the anchor. For the relay, the team finished first and was also comprised of senior John Albinson (who also placed

fifth in the 1000-meter run), junior Matthew Keresztes senior Eric Keresztes who placed fourth in the 55-meter and sophomore Justin Julich. hurdles, fifth in the triple jump and was a member of the 4x200 relay. Junior Alden Mohasci finished fourth in the high jump and took sixth place in the long jump and 4x400 relay. The Port Jefferson Royals will be competing for the County Championship, followed by the State qualifier meet to be held on February 8th. Digital Footprint This February, seventhgraders at Port Jefferson Middle School observed Digital Learning Day, a nationwide celebration of digital learning in the 21st century. Organized by teachers Monica Consalvo and Deirdre Filippi, Digital Learning Day aims to demonstrate how learning can be transformed when the Web and the effective use of technology are successfully incorporated into the classroom. This is the school’s third year participating.

“This year’s theme was

They also wrote reflections that discussed what technological tools they use most, how they have changed the way they study and complete homework and whether they feel those changes are positive or negative.”

Students also examined their digital footprints, studying their personal data trails created through the use of electronic devices.

“Technology helps me tremendously when I am doing research,” said one student. “I can find the information I need in a short period of time, easily make corrections to my writing with a word processor and my final documents are neat and easy to read.”

The automotive technology students at the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology at Ward Technical Center have taken second and fourth place at a recent regional automotive technology competition.

The tournament, entitled The Greater New York Automotive Dealers Association (GYNADA) Automotive Technology Competition, took place on Thursday, January 9th, at the organization’s headquarters in Whitestone, NY, where a total of 13 teams vied against one another for the chance to advance to the state round and for scholarship monies.

Both Ward Tech teams now have the opportunity to battle at the state level on February 11th for the chance to represent New York in the upcoming national championship.

Mind Matters The annual Mind Matters Dinner Dance, hosted by the Mental Health Association in Suffolk, in partnership with Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans was held on January 30th at the picturesque Old Field Club in East Setauket.

A packed hall of attendees gathered to mingle, enjoy a gourmet dinner and dance the night away to live jazz performed by the New York City Police Department Jazz Band. Event honorees Sonia Murdock, Executive Director of the Postpartum Resource Center of New York; and Thomas Ronayne, Director of the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency gave passionate speeches to business executives and non-profit leaders, friends, family, and politicians on the healthcare strengths and needs of people living on Long Island, New York.

Sonia Murdock, an international advocate and educator on mental health related to childbearing, eloquently spoke about the gap in education, treatment and support services regarding postpartum depression/psychosis as well as the support and resources available to mothers and families who are experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, to include postpartum depression.

Thomas Ronayne spoke about the need for advocacy

and casework services for our Veterans, to include housing, career assistance, and academic opportunities.

As administrator of the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Program, Mr. Ronayne spoke on the prevalence of post traumatic stress disorder and the tragic rate of

United Nations Multinational Peace Keeping Forces and anti submarine warfare operations around the world.

The Mental Health Association in Suffolk is an advocacy organization devoted to improving the mental health of the community through education, workforce training, and information and referral services.

MHAS is a local chapter of a statewide and national and network association of local MHAs. Its mission is: “To promote mental wellness by means of support services, education and advocacy.”

MHAS is in the process of a full merger with Suffolk County United Veterans and Clubhouse of Suffolk. SCUV provides emergency, transitional, and permanent housing to at-risk and homeless veterans along with case management, education and vocational services, a food pantry, and a County-wide peer support program, the PFC Joseph P. Dwyer Veteran PTSD Peer Support Project. The grantees selected have the potential for large-scale statewide or regionwide impact on spreading and sustaining

the NDPP, which has been lauded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an effective, evidencebased public health program.

The NDPP is a community-based program conducted by trained lifestyle coaches to teach people with prediabetes how

to modify their eating and physical activity habits, and to sustain those changes over time. Each one-hour class includes lessons on diet, exercise, staying motivated, overcoming stress, and other behavioral changes, all in a supportive group setting. The goal is to help people reduce their

weight through a healthy low-calorie, low-fat diet and by engaging in at least 150 minutes per week of physical activity.

This evidence-based lifestyle intervention has been shown to help participants lose 5–7% of their body weight and reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 50%.

Grant awards to organizations from the Bronx to Buffalo will support a range of activities to help organizations implement and grow the NDPP, including the expansion of existing programs; communication, outreach, and education activities to

obtain a steady flow of participants; and development of business plans to ensure the sustainability of the program.

There is no substitute for human blood, with about one in seven hospital admissions requiring a blood transfusion. Blood is especially important for people with leukemia, other forms of cancer, and of course for trauma victims. With a limited shelf life, supplies must be continually replenished.

Three factors are combining together to prompt NYBC’s emergency declaration:

1. Many blood drives have been cancelled because of accumulated or predicted snowfall.

2. Many donors haven’t been able to make scheduled donation appointments due to the weather.

3. Hospital demand for blood types – notably O-negative, the universal blood type because of its usefulness in trauma

situations – remains high.

If you cannot donate but still wish to participate in bringing crucial blood products to patients in need, please ask someone to donate for you, or consider volunteering at a local blood drive. NYBC also offers special community service scholarships for students who organize community blood drives during summer months.

In the midst of an unprecedented string of winter storms, New York Blood Center is urgently asking donors to roll up their sleeves to replenish the community blood and platelet supply.

Dozens of blood drives have been canceled because of bad weather. Blood drives that are continuing have experienced greatly reduced attendance, while operations at NYBC’s many walk-in donor centers are similarly affected.

“I urge residents to donate to this vital cause,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said. “So many people depend on donations to survive serious illnesses or accidents. Giving blood is an easy way to help others in need.”
