LICADD has been named a Finalist in the Rising Star category in The 3rd Annual Long Island Imagine Awards. The Long Island Imagine Awards was created to offer formal acknowledgement to some of Long Island’s most effective and innovative nonprofit organizations. Last year’s event attracted over 300 attendees from the nonprofit and business communities and an even larger crowd is expected this year. Winners will be announced LIVE at the awards gala at the Crest Hollow Country Club on Tuesday, May 5th. Raising Funds The Port Jefferson Middle School student council has raised more than $1,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through a Pennies for Patients fundraiser. During the month of

and, oh yeah, actual missed calls and voicemails, I suppose the easiest course of action for some is to simply “ignore all” and move on. Too bad there are those of us on the receiving end of that dismissive approach – people who, for all our technology and gadgets, actually yearn for that human connection in the form of a personal acknowledgement that said communication was received, processed, appreciated for what it was worth and responded to appropriately. In a timely manner.
MUSIC’S PLACE IN THE DIGITAL AGE looking further into the artists I find interesting. Unfortunately, what I have noticed as a high school freshman is that I often struggle to find people to share discoveries with who are willing to explore new musical grounds. The general trend seems to be that young people don’t recognize music as a main focal point in their lives like past generations have. Instead, the idea of immersing oneself in this highly spiritual, universal experience is being practiced less, which is evidenced by many of my peers. On countless occasions, my parents have recounted their time in high school with stories that can all be drawn back to a mutual appreciation for music.

Although not all friendships were rooted in their love for the same bands or genres (but many were), people could always find a way to relate to one another through this medium. When people my age find themselves without something to talk about, discussion about a new favorite tune is hardly ever even considered. It is easier to simply default to social media or other means of digital distraction to break the tension. There is also an astounding lack of devotion to artists nowadays. With the advent of streaming services like Pandora and Spotify, individual songs are played on stations created by the user. Allowing unfavorable songs to be skipped and offering unlimited access to an endless list of tracks gives young people no reason to purchase a musician’s entire
album. To constantly browse through fragments of what is really a large cohesive work does a great disservice to the listener. In order to allow yourself to grow with the artist, you must see the whole picture. This develops a story that can be interpreted differently for anyone and is what should drive people to become engrossed in other similar compositions. A fast paced society is creating a youth who undervalue music and cannot fully appreciate it. We are neglecting many opportunities for expanding our knowledge of the world of music and are failing to forge lasting bonds with others within it. While this may be very disheartening, popular culture can embrace new ideas very rapidly, providing some hope for fully inviting music into our lives.

As part of the school’s annual month-long reada-thon to benefit the Madagascar/Ankisy fund, students are seeking sponsors to continue the school’s effort to increase
educational opportunities in the island country. Since 1999, JAE has raised enough money to not only build a school in Madagascar but also support it through the years. Throughout the month, students will receive donations from sponsors for the reading they complete. Students who
read 300 pages will be invited to the building’s “Prime Time” reading event in March, which will include several games, reading opportunities and a discussion session with the founder of the Madagascar/ Ankisy fund, Dr. David Krause, a paleontologist/ humanitarian.
Top Honors Rocky Point High School varsity wrestling team have been racking up top honors during this year’s winter season. The talented Eagles won the League 5 Dual Meet title, finishing with a 7-0 league dual meet record for the second consecutive year. The team also finished in second in the Suffolk County Dual meet championship, earning the distinction of being rated #2 Dual Meet Team in all of Suffolk County. Most recently, the Eagles
won their third consecutive League tournament title and several students placed at the competition. These students now qualify for the next step, which is the Suffolk County Wrestling Championship. On Saturday, February 7th, Mount Sinai High School from Mount Sinai, New York competed and won the Bay Scallop Bowl, a regional ocean science academic competition that is part of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB). The Bay Scallop Bowl, which was held at Stony Brook University, tests students’ knowledge of ocean science disciplines through buzzer-style, multiple-choice questions and open-ended, teamchallenge questions. The winning team of this bowl will compete against 22 other regional champions in the upcoming 18th Annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl, which is being hosted by the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Lab on April 23rd-26th, 2015 in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The theme of the 2015 NOSB is the science of oil in the ocean, a timely and relevant topic given that 2015 marks the five year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon
incident in the Gulf of Mexico. “We are excited to have brought the topic of oil in the ocean to our students this year. It is playing a growing role in coastal and offshore areas around the U.S., not to mention our nation’s economy,” said Kristen Yarincik, Director of the NOSB at the Consortium for Ocean Leadership. “These bright students are the future stewards of our ocean, so it is important for them to learn about the applied role of science and the importance of ocean and coastal health considerations when setting policy and making management decisions.” The winning team from Mount Sinai High School is coached by Gina Sing with Assistant Coach David Chase. Teaming Up W.S. Mount Elementary School students and staff got into the football spirit by participating in a two-week Soup-er Bowl food drive for local food pantries. During the event, which was coordinated by the Site Based Management Team and several sixth-grade students, Mount collected more than 550 non-
perishable food items. In the spirit of competition, the donors used their contributions to vote on which team they thought would win this year’s Super Bowl by placing the items on tables that were decorated with each team’s name. To increase participation in the drive, Principal Kathryn White and
Arctic Adventures Assistant to the Principal Brian McCarthy each supported one of the competitors and vowed to donate an additional 100 items if their team lost. Unlike the actual NFL game, Mr. McCarthy’s Seahawks edged out Mrs. White’s Patriots with a final total of 297 to 254 donations, respectively.
Nassakeag Elementary School kindergarten students strengthened their understanding of the arctic by participating in a hands-on learning activity with the help of their classroom buddies. The Arctic Adventure,
which has become a staple in the grade-level’s curriculum over the last several years, provided students with the chance to learn about the animals, environment, people and traditions of the Arctic in a fun and interactive way. In
a classroom transformed into a frozen tundra, students visited seven education stations. They took part in activities such as ice fishing, sculpting animals with clay, and feeling “blubber.”

Staying Heart Healthy
In honor of American Heart Month, Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School students and staff members participated in the annual Jump Rope for Heart event. During the after-school program, the students had the chance to demonstrate their jumproping skills to the beat of popular music, and
through their participation collected donations for the worthy cause. Students participated in an hour of “free jump” before competing in grade level challenges to determine who could jump rope the longest. Under the leadership of physical education teacher Maria Amoscato, approximately 200 students
helped to raise more than $12,800 for the American Heart Association. Jump Rope for Heart is an annual program sponsored by the American Heart Association in an effort to raise not only awareness of heart health issues, but also funds for continued research.

Arrowhead Elementary School students and staff focused on positive character traits during a series of events held throughout the month of January. With the help of talented actors from Theater Three, the Three Village School District students learned how to stand up to bullying during two inschool productions. “Class Dismissed: The Bullying Project,” which was viewed
by the fourth- through sixth-graders, focused on acts of bullying within a school setting and via social media. “Stand Up, Stand Out,” which was shown to the kindergarten through third-graders and involved live actors and puppets, put a twist on familiar fairytales and addressed how the characters dealt with bullying. During the week of the Great Kindness Challenge, students and staff members
dressed according to different theme days and completed as many acts of kindness as possible. These included partaking in activities at the kindness stations in the cafeteria and, working with social worker Judy Forgione, to create outdoor “kindness rocks,” which included each students thumb print symbolizing their commitment to the cause.

Spelling Champion Sahil out spelled the approximate 115 participants at this year’s regional contest, who spanned grades four to eight. Each had qualified for the event by winning their school spelling bee. The regional contest went ten rounds and was noted
to be one of the most competitive in recent history. Sahil will now compete against approximately 300 students from around the county at the national contest this May. The broadcast will be televised on ESPN.
The hard work Rocky Point High School’s robotics team - Quantum Chaos - has displayed since September paid off during the FTC Qualifying Competition, where they won first place and a bid to compete in the NYC/ Long Island Regional Championship.
This year the challenge was called the “Cascade Effect” and called for students to build and program a robot to perform different tasks to complete the overall challenge. The team, which is comprised of students in ninth through 12th-grade, received varying point
values for the activities they completed. The team will continue to practice and prepare for March competition by make alterations and improvements to their robot to maximize its efficiency.

Scoring A Championship Following their February 4th win against McGann Mercy High School, the Earl L. Vandermeulen varsity girls basketball team clinched the Suffolk League VIII Championship. Under the leadership of Coach Ed Duddy and Assistant Coach Allyson Wolff, the Port Jefferson team clinched the win with a final score of 51-31.
The win gave the team an undefeated league record of 10-0. Last season, Coach Duddy’s first as head coach, featured a young team and he had to create a whole new program that included hard work and discipline in practices and in games. “Last year, the team had to learn a new defensive and offensive philosophy,
which is to be aggressive and execute plans,” said Coach Duddy. “They are now reaping the benefits of their hard work and team play. I am very proud of these girls not just because they are winning, but because they care for another, which makes them a special group in my eyes.”

Deadline Extended In 2011, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) unveiled a historic educational initiative called the FASNY Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York. FASNY announced a deadline extension - to February 20th - for firefighters to apply for the new 2015
semester. “FASNY HELP has been a tremendous success and a vital initiative for fire departments to boost their recruiting of the next generation of firefighters,” said FASNY President Robert McConville. “HELP funding comes from our federal SAFER grant, which has driven recruitment initiatives throughout the state. We urge all interested students to sign up, and apply for this tuition reimbursement program
before the February 20th deadline.” Under FASNY HELP, an individual who hasn’t already achieved a college degree, or has not taken 80 or more college credits, is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of academic course(s) that the FASNY HELP studentvolunteer firefighter can
pursue either on a fulltime or part-time basis. Starting with the Fall 2013 semester, FASNY HELP was expanded to cover online courses taken through Empire State College. FASNY HELP funds can be utilized for tuition costs incurred in the fall and spring semesters. Eligible student-volunteers must maintain acceptable levels of training and volunteer activity while attending school and fulfill a service requirement after they
complete their course of study. They must attend the closest community college or one within a 50-mile radius of their residence. Empire State College’s inclusion in the program has expanded students’ options. Due to a variety of factors, many volunteer fire departments are experiencing the need to recruit and retain more members. Tuition reimbursement can be an effective incentive for people to volunteer in
their local community. The deadline to apply for tuition reimbursement for the new semester has been extended to February 20th. FASNY HELP is made possible by a $4.2 million dollar U.S. Department of Homeland Security Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant awarded to FASNY. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) announced the 28th Anniversary Angel Ball Honoree Humanitarian Award is Tara E. Conner, former Miss USA. Tara Conner is a Television Personality and Recovery Advocate. Through her work, she shares her experience, strength and hope with audiences throughout the United States. Conner was crowned Miss USA in 2006. During December of that year, she entered the Caron Treatment Center and completed 30 days of treatment for alcohol and drug addiction. She has since celebrated 8 years of sobriety. Tara hopes to raise awareness that addiction is a disease and that many people go on to lead a healthy, productive life in recovery. She especially wants educators, families and professionals to know that sobriety at an early age is achievable and that it greatly enhances life’s possibilities. Miss Conner states, “It’s so important to understand that addiction is a family disease,” said Conner. “I experienced this firsthand within my own family. But I’ve also learned that through treatment and recovery you can break the cycle.” LICADD is working
feverishly to put a stop to the increase in addiction and the tragedies that result from it. Children and families are being devastated and LICADD offers a solution with preventive education and support services to help break the cycle. Jay has spent over three decades working in our public schools as both a teacher and building leader. Volunteers Needed Family & Children’s Association, Long Island’s leading human care agency is seeking volunteers for its new Friendly Visitors program set to begin in May. Family & Children’s Association serves nearly 9,000 seniors each year providing case management, financial counseling, health insurance counseling and
other support services. They will provide training and on-going support to volunteers enabling them to provide companionship and once-a-week visitation to a local, homebound senior. The Sea Tow Foundation is accepting applications from non-profit organizations and boating agencies throughout the country to host a life jacket loaner program in their local area through a new grant from the Sport Fish Restoration & Boating Trust Fund, which is administered by the U.S. Coast Guard. The Sea Tow Foundation is a non-profit, 501(c) (3) organization with the mission of promoting safe boating practices. To help promote life jacket use, the Sea Tow Foundation stocks more than 250 life jacket loaner stands nationwide
where boaters may borrow life jackets for free for a day of safe fun on the water. The Sea Tow Foundation Life Jacket Loaner program has been funded through donations and grants since its inception in 2008. Since then, more than 28,500 free life jackets have been loaned to boaters through the program. “Life jacket loaner programs are most often used by boaters who forgot to pack their own life jackets or decided at the last minute to invite a friend to go boating and didn’t have a life jacket that would fit him or her,” said Sea Tow Foundation

Life Jacket Loaners Executive Director Gail R. Kulp, CAE. “These new life jacket loaner stations will be open in time for the 2015 summer boating season so that boaters around the country can have the opportunity to borrow a life jacket for a day out on the water.” Life jacket loaner program applications now are being accepted through March 1st, 2015. HEART HEALTH AWARENESS - In recognition of Heart Health Awareness Month, Good Samaritan Hospital hosted a free “Open Your Heart To Health” event in February, at Westfield South Shore Mall in Bay Shore. Shoppers had the opportunity to visit four health awareness stations and participate in blood pressure, cholesterol and BMI screenings. Participants received free gifts at the event which also included Zumba demonstrations, a photo booth, face painting and other children’s activities. It was sponsored in part by an educational grant from Teacher’s Federal Credit Union.
Basketball Tournament Set year at the college’s Ammerman Campus in Selden and livestreamed via SharksTV on the College’s website to hoops-hungry fans. Student camera operators, stage managers, switchers, audio and video technicians are preparing and practicing for the Friday, February 27th to Sunday, March 1st tournament when they will present eight live
games over the three days from five camera positions throughout the Brookhaven Gymnasium; including four instant replay angles. Alan Bernstein, Assistant Academic Chair, Department of Communications said the experience garnered by the students is invaluable. “This is an all hands on deck production and tremendous opportunity for our students to acquire
real life production experience,” Bernstein said. Bernstein said that alumni of his program will also be involved. Among those alumni will be Eric Abram and Rich Ballato, who regularly work on professional sports telecasts in the New York area. Prior to tournament weekend, the students will lay cable, check lighting, conduct sound checks
and create graphics and introductions for each of the tournament’s 16 participating teams. Suffolk County Community College has equipped student-based teams with the skills and systems needed to produce professional, top-quality webcasts, streamed over its website. The college’s remote production van is equipped with state-of the-art Newtek Tricaster
860 production systems and a Newtek 3Play 425 video record and playback system. The student tournament webcast was watched last year by an international audience and by viewers state-wide. This year’s broadcast will be available from the Suffolk County Community College homepage at www. sunysuffolk.edu during the tournament weekend.

Spring Gala Set Angela’s House, a local non-profit that assists over 600 medically fragile children on Long Island. Angela’s House offers programs and supports to families who need care for their medically frail children. Angela’s house will coordinate services
needed to safely care for these children at home. For children who cannot be cared for at home, Angela’s House I, II and III are specially designed homes that provide a warm environment with 24-hour nursing care to accommodate the children’s Complex medical and
physical needs. The Gala celebration will be held at The Watermill in Smithtown, on March 19th. There will be a cocktail hour, a reception and a formal dinner. There will also be various items up for silent auction and raffles. Angela’s House will be

Island’s groundwater, bays and estuaries. Pharmaceuticals have been detected at low levels in New York State waterways and Long Island’s shallow groundwater. Adrienne Esposito, Executive Director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment said, “We are thrilled that DEC was able to provide this critical service, which benefits all Long Islanders and goes a long way toward protecting Long Island’s drinking and surface waters from pharmaceutical contaminants. Giving health care facilities a safe and convenient pharmaceutical disposal option has already reduced the number of institutions flushing unused medications, and now participation in this program needs to be expanded and strengthened in the future.” Participating facilities, made up primarily of nursing, extended care and rehabilitation centers, began storing unused and expired medications in October when they were first contacted by DEC. Environmental Conservation Officers (ECOs) then visited each of the 25 facilities this week to collect the stored medications and brought them to the Covanta Waste-to-Energy Plant in Westbury, which volunteered its services to incinerate the products.
Prescription drug take back efforts began in the last few years. Prior to these initiatives the normal disposal practice was to flush unwanted drugs. With technological advances in analytical techniques, it is now possible to detect very low levels of drugs in surface water and groundwater. Some drugs pass largely unaltered through wastewater treatment plants and enter rivers and other waterways. Drugs from heath care facilities, pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities and farms can also find their way into the water. Flushed medications have been found in New York lakes, rivers and streams which can negatively affect the waterways. A nationwide study done in 1999 and 2000 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) found low levels of drugs such as antibiotics, hormones, contraceptives and steroids in 80 percent of rivers and streams tested. Medications adversely affect fish and other aquatic wildlife and increase the development of drug-resistant bacteria. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) collected over 52 boxes of pharmaceutical medications during the first DEC Long Island Pharmaceutical Take Back Day at healthcare facilities, DEC Commissioner Joe Martens announced today. Twenty-five long-term healthcare facilities throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties participated in the program, which collects and responsibly destroys unused or expired pharmaceuticals. “Health care facilities can produce large amounts of expired or unused medications and many have few options for disposal,” said Commissioner Martens. “The success of this collection by DEC is a positive step that will help to protect the environment by preventing medications from entering waterways. We are grateful to all the facilities that enthusiastically agreed to participate in this event.” DEC received funding through the Environmental Fund for $150,000 to expand the program, which already exists in the New York City Watershed. The program is designed to reduce the amount of pharmaceuticals that are “flushed” by facilities and can end up in Long
