It’s here! It’s finally arrived!

The moment you all (well I and my Human) have been waiting for! My very first birthday in my bowl, celebrated this past weekend with my Human family. Who would’ve thought this day would come…

Of course, in Betta years, that probably makes me about 47. Not to mention the countless days… months… years… I spent languishing in that tiny Tupperware container they kept me in at the pet store. But, ever since February 16th, 2015, the day my Human adopted me, all has been well.

There was a party, with dinner, and even a few presents!

What does one buy a Betta, you ask? Well, there was the pre-Birthday/Christmas gift of a brand new tank – complete

with a filter and a light and everything – which my Human has yet to transfer me into… something about not wanting to “traumatize” me without consulting with the “pet experts” at the store first.

I haven’t received a scheduled moving date as of yet.

Speaking of, I’m still patiently waiting to be taken on that shopping spree I was promised back in August for my six-month birthday. All the sales that have come and gone… just think what fancy toys and plants I could have accumulated by now! I must have at least enough for a small castle saved away. And pretty gravel… and maybe a leafy hammock to sleep in… and a seashell to decorate…

Tiny brain, big dreams.

The one thing I didn’t get was a fishy friend to play with.

I don’t need anything fancy like me; perhaps just a small

shrimp or a snail to keep me company, and maybe vacuum my bowl now and then. Those long hours spent waiting for my Human to return home each day are awfully boring.

There are only so many laps a Betta can swim around his plant, only so much gravel to push from one corner to another.

Ah, but enough complaining. I’ve decided to turn over a new fin for my new year and focus on being positive and loving toward my Human, my Grammy and any other visitors who might like to visit and gaze upon my beauty. (Hey, I didn’t say I was going to take up modesty.)

‘Til next time, thanks to all the readers for their birthday greetings. And to my Human family, thank you for the best first birthday a Betta could hope to have.

Celebrating Language P.J. Gelinas Junior High School celebrated Foreign Language Week through a variety of interactive activities.

The building’s Foreign Language Honor Society participated in a poster contest, calling all members to create colorful pieces based on the central theme

“Languages Enrich Your Mind.” The entire studentbody enjoyed viewing a traveling mural exhibit on display throughout the week in the foreign language hallways as well as taking part in trivia and door decorating contests.

The week concluded with an international night celebration, featuring five

musical performances and an array of authentic dishes.

Chamber Music Series

North Shore Pro Musica will present the third an d forth chamber music concerts in their 2015-2016 series at the Long Island Museum on Sunday, February 28th and Sunday, March 6th. Both performances begin at 5 p.m. in the Gillespie Room of the Carriage Museum.

The February 28th performance is rescheduled from January 24th, when the Blizzard of 2016 caused cancellations all across Long Island. The performance will feature chamber works of Schubert and Schumann, including Schumann’s Piano Trio in D minor. The March 6th concert includes various works for piano and other instruments, and features pianist Dimitri Dover.

Students and their families at Miller Place High School and North Country Road Middle School recently participated in an internet awareness assembly. Officer Thomas Grimes, a United States Air Force Veteran and retired New York City Police Department detective lead the students in a discussion of the many positive opportunities provided by the internet, but the importance of

using it responsibly.

During this assembly Officer Thomas Grimes shared personal stories, news accounts that demonstrated the consequences of unsafe internet practices and a video message from President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Students had the chance to learn about internet safety and were able to ask Officer Grimes any questions they had concerning threats,

cyberbullying, state and federal laws and more.

Miller Place School District parents and guardians also attended an internet safety assembly to learn about the importance of stressing internet safety, understanding potential life threatening scenarios, social networking and protecting their child from innocent behaviors that predators utilize to plan the perfect ambush.

Tournament Championship

Golden Key Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Chloe Dugourd has earned a Golden Key as part of the annual Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for the Northeast Region.

Jonathan Feldman, chair of Collaborative Piano, as well as staff pianist for Juilliard Vocal Arts and teaching fellow in Keyboard Skills. He was awarded full fellowships to Tanglewood Music Center, Aspen Summer Music Festival, and Songfest at Colburn, where he returned as staff pianist in 2014. He has also attended the Franz-SchubertInstitut in Baden, Austria.

Mr. Dover has performed at New York’s Alice Tully Hall, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, City Center, Symphony Space, and Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, as well as Warner Theater in Washington, Zipper Hall in Los Angeles, and throughout the USA, Canada, and Austria.

On back-to-back

weekends, the team shinned on the mats to earn two consecutive regional titles. During the League tournament, 12 Rocky Point All-League wrestlers competed and four of them captured the

championship. In addition, the entire coaching staff received coach of the year honors.

The team will compete at the county competition this weekend at Hofstra University.

Scholars Program.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program honors some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors who demonstrate exceptional scholarship and talent in the visual,

creative, performing arts, and career and technical fields. Each year approximately 4,000 candidates are identified nationwide.

“Smart Desk,” a school desk with a built in tablet computer. This device would enable students to log onto their student account in the classroom as well as home and would house all note taking, diagrams, sketches and textbooks. This would eliminate the need for physical textbooks, as well as ensure the most up-to-date information was available to students.

Related to this year’s theme, this project would reduce an enormous amount of trash, eliminate the cutting down of over 82,000 trees annually and

reduce pollutants.

The Radical Robotix team did a presentation on a “Hydro Generator,” a small micro turbine similar to large turbines used in dams. When placed in the main water line of a home, this device would generate electricity each time water is used in a home, which would be stored in a battery for emergency use during a power outage.

Thus reducing the energy required by the electric company in producing electricity and creating less pollution, which itself is considered “trash” by definition.

ROBOTICS TEAMS HONORED - On February 3rd, Councilwoman Jane Bonner visited the Rocky Point Middle School Library to meet with the school’s Robotics teams, the Robo Eagles and Radical Robotix. Each team presented their projects and asked for feedback before they head to the Long Island First Lego League (FLL) Competition. Each year the FLL creates a different theme for their robotics competitions. This year’s theme is “Trash Trek.” Included at the competitions is a team project presentation, typically a conceptual idea proposed by the team as a solution to the year’s theme.

Mentors Make Memories Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School students have the chance to establish and maintain a network of support as well as develop valuable social skills through their participation in the building’s Mentors and Mentees program.

The M & M’s program brings together volunteer staff members and students on a weekly basis. During this time, the pairs engage in such things as games and recreational activities each with the goal of improving self-esteem and fostering self-expression.

The mentees recently took time to celebrate their mentors during a winter event during National Mentoring Month. During the event, the pairs gathered together to enjoy lunch and complete a winter craft.

Colors of Long Island Edna Louise Spear Elementary School fifthgrader Dante Cangemi will have his artwork displayed at the Long Island Museum’s “Colors of Long Island” exhibit on March

Cangemi’s unique crayon painting was created in the style of artist Don Marco.

He worked to incorporate artistic concepts he learned from Pre-K to fifth-grade.

The Port Jefferson School District extends its congratulations to Cangemi on his artistic achievement.

Robotics Advances Rocky Point Middle School’s robotics teams recently competed at the FIRST Lego League Qualifying Tournament and took home top prizes.

Going against 34 teams, the two Rocky Point teams showcased their original

projects and demonstrated their skills as they competed for awards and the chance to advance to the FLL Championship Tournament, to be held at Longwood Senior High School on February 28th.

As a result of their

performance, the Radical Robotix team received the “Core Values Inspiration” award and the Robo Eagles qualified to represent Rocky Point at the FLL Championship Tournament.

Debating at State Ward Melville High School’s Debate Team has advanced in the competition and will now be competing at the State Championship.

Novice Public Forum team members Kathleen

Esfahany and Michael Lu captured another trophy at the recent Elimination Tournament held at North Shore High School. They placed seventh out of 36 entrants, with a full qualification for the State

Tournament to be held at Hofstra in April.

This third solid win by the school’s Debate Team marks an extraordinarily successful season in their first year of competition.

This training is mandatory for trips where normal support systems would cause delayed care of fractures, sprains, wounds and illnesses.

King Kullen Raises Funds

King Kullen, America’s First Supermarket, recently came to the aid of Long Islanders in need by hosting a “Check Out Hunger” campaign in its stores, raising $35,000.

The money was donated to the Long Island Cares/ Harry Chapin Food Bank, which has been serving the hungry on Long Island since 1980.

We are pleased to partner with our customers who contributed to ‘Check Out Hunger’ to assist Long Island Cares in its mission to provide emergency food where and when it is needed. Helping those in

need in the communities we serve is a tradition that dates back to my grandfather, Michael J. Cullen, who founded King Kullen in 1930.”

In 1997, King Kullen was the first supermarket chain to participate in the annual “Check Out Hunger” campaign, a unique partnership between Long Island Cares and the shopping community in which customers can make a donation with a coupon when checking out at the supermarket register.

This year’s campaign ran from October through December 31st, 2015.

One hundred percent of all donations go to Long Island Cares.

Training for emergencies while hiking in the woods was offered by the Suffolk County Council (Boy Scouts of America)’s High Adventure Training team on Saturday, January 30th, at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. Seven local adult Scouting volunteers and one Boy Scout participated in the “Wilderness First Aid Training” course.

“Wilderness and Remote First Aid” is supported by American Red Cross and the Boy Scouts of America.

Two trained Leaders are required for their Scout Troop or Venture Crew to participate in a high adventure camping and/or hiking trip.

Prevention Program Available Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Department of Health Services Commissioner Dr. James Tomarken invite residents who are at risk for developing type-2 diabetes to participate, free of charge, in the countyadministered National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP). The program supports moderate behavioral changes and

has proven to reduce risk in those who are at risk for type 2 diabetes.

DPP is based on a research study led by the National Institutes of Health. The study showed that with intensive counseling and motivational support, participants were able to make behavioral changes, reducing their risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes by 58 percent.

Lifestyle changes worked particularly well for participants aged 60 and older, reducing their risk by 71 percent.

“We seek to reverse in Suffolk County the nationwide trend toward increased rates of diabetes. This program addresses the behaviors that contribute to diabetes, a disease that exacts enormous costs to the individual, the family

and the community,” said Executive Bellone, who rolled out “Healthy Suffolk” last year.

“Diabetes puts people at risk for many serious health conditions,” said Dr. Tomarken. “The good news is that moderate changes in lifestyle can help restore blood sugar toward normal levels and result in significant health benefits,” said Dr. Tomarken.

The Diabetes Prevention Program is led by a trained lifestyle coach. It meets one hour per week for 16 weeks, then monthly for the remainder of one year. The Department of Health Services is offering three new sixteen-week Diabetes Prevention series beginning in February and March.
