$23,000 a year in savings* from lighting upgrades means more of this for Long Island.

When the nonprofit Canine Companions requested a free energy assessment, we discovered that installing LED fixtures and other energy efficiency measures could save them nearly $2,000 a month. And with available PSEG Long Island rebates, the installation was affordable. Today, those changes have meant more funds for the mission of providing service dogs to Long Islanders with disabilities. And that means a better Long Island for us all.

Long Island Elite Selects Paws Of War As 2023 Charity Partner

Long Island Elite, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering the growth and development of local Long Island business professionals and emerging regional leaders, has announced they have selected Nesconsetbased Paws of War as its 2023 charity partner. The announcement came at Long Island Elite’s first meeting of the year at The Heritage Club in Farmingdale.

Paws of War is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to train and place service animals and companion dogs to support and provide independence to U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional and physical effects of war. The non-profit also provides animal rescue for U.S. troops who have befriended an animal while serving overseas. The organization also serves

as a community center where veterans and first responders come together daily to build bonds and support each other.

The funds raised by Long Island Elite in 2023 will give Paws of War additional resources to further its mission of “helping both ends of the leash” by providing services to veterans, first responders and their service or companion animals. These activities will support the mental wellbeing of individuals in Paws of War programs, giving back to the heroes who have sacrificed so much for this country. Having service or companion animals has proven to be an effective way to enhance mental wellbeing and reduce veteran suicides. LIE volunteers and funds raised will also assist in rescuing dogs and cats and pairing them with local heroes in the community.

“This partnership

between Long Island Elite and Paws of War will enhance the lives of veterans and lead to numerous dogs find their forever homes. We will also raise awareness in our community about Paws of War’s important mission. Our members will see first-hand the challenges that veterans and first responders face, especially those experiencing the effects of PTSD and the positive impact dogs and cats will provide. As a U.S. Marine veteran, I personally understand the challenges and hardships that our veterans and first responders face every day,” said Frank Morizio, Jr, Long Island Elite President.

During the partnership year, members of Long Island Elite will volunteer their time at Paws of War’s events where they will learn more about the organization, including the cost of training service

animals, the challenges and issues related to abandoned and mistreated animals, animal adoption and rescue and the importance of veterans and first responders gathering to share their stories, comradery and mutual support.

Many veterans and first responders are struggling with PSTD and other mental health challenges. The support and funds that

LIE will provide to us will go toward improving the lives of these heroes and at the same time, find homes for so many dogs that need them,” said Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War.

For over 20 years, Long Island Elite members have supported many not-forprofits. The organization has raised over $1 million dollars for charities and charity partners, including United Cerebral Palsy,

ACLD, SIBSPlace, The Safe Center LI, New Ground and Long Island Alzheimer’s & Dementia Center. LIE members’ efforts have positively impacted thousands of lives on Long Island.

Steven Van Zandt’s TeachRock School Curriculum To Expand In New York Through Partnership With Long Island Music And Entertainment Hall Of Fame

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHoF) recently announced a partnership with rock and roll legend Steven Van Zandt’s TeachRock organization. In recognition for his work to promote music education on Long Island, Van Zandt was presented with LIMEHoF’s Harry Chapin Award in 2016.

“TeachRock aligns perfectly with LIMEHoF’s educational commitment to education and encouraging more music, arts, and culture being taught in local school districts,” said Tom Needham, LIMEHoF’s Educational Programs Director.

“Our shared goal is to encourage more Long Island, Brooklyn and Queens school districts to adopt the TeachRock curriculum and lesson plans for the cultural enrichment of its students.”

“We know that if you want a kid to succeed, you don’t tell her to take her earbuds out,” said TeachRock founder Steven Van Zandt. “You ask her what she’s listening to, and then you trace it back together. Kids come to us with the natural gift of curiosity, and the TeachRock curriculum helps teachers meet them there on the way to meaningful learning.”

Launched in 2002 by Van Zandt and the Founders Board of Bono, Jackson Browne, Martin Scorsese, and Bruce Springsteen, TeachRock.org provides free, standards-aligned resources that use music to help K-12 students succeed in science, math, social studies, and language arts, among other subjects.

TeachRock improves students’ lives by filling every classroom with the sound, stories, and

science of music. Nearly 60,000 educators— representing all 50 states—are registered at Teachrock.org.

One example of how TeachRock has been successfully incorporated on Long Island is in the Freeport School District. Stephanie Arnell, a Freeportbased teacher, has been using TeachRock with her students for years, and she’s now leading professional development sessions with teachers throughout her district.

“Personally, I think every teacher should be using the TeachRock curriculum, and we have found that our Freeport students in all grades LOVE the content,” Arnell said.

LIMEHoF also plans to promote the TeachRock curriculum throughout the Long Island, Brooklyn, and Queens school districts

in a variety of ways. Promotion strategies include the deployment of a LIMEHoF monthly email blast/web, as well as posting a monthly webpage news blast to highlight different TeachRock lessons for each month. Starting in the fall of 2023, LIMEHoF plans to host TeachRock teacher training sessions at its recently opened home base location in Stony Brook village. There is hope that participating schools will be encouraged to visit LIMEHoF via class field trips.

Teachers interested in learning more about the training and in signing up for the newsletters can visit https://www. limusichalloffame.org/ teachrock/ or email info@limusichalloffame. org

“We hear so much about declining participation and engagement, and how

that results in lower math and reading scores,” said Bill Carbone, Executive Director at TeachRock. “But nearly everywhere a TeachRock class is implemented we see the opposite: Engagement and grades are rising, and often the school ends up adding additional TeachRock courses to meet student demand. It’s a paradigm shift: Students aren’t cutting class; they’re clamoring to get in!”

For more information about LIMEHoF’s education programs please visit www.limehof. org

About LIMEHoF

Founded in 2004, the Long Island and Entertainment Music Hall of Fame is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. In 2022 it

Helping You Help Others

Do you know who cleans and maintains many Long Island Courts?

www.thecorporatesource.org

A major vocation for people with disabilities is cleaning, maintenance, janitorial, landscaping and snow removal work. The Corporate Source (TCS) is a Garden City-based non profit organization, which has vendor contract relationships to provide cleaning and maintenance for many of Long Island’s courthouse facilities.

As one example, the Su olk County Court Complex in Central Islip averages visits from more than 1000 people a day, whether it is judges, employees, lawyers, plainti s or defendants. Many of these visitors would not know that this 28 acre campus is cleaned and maintained in large measure by people with disabilities from The Corporate Source. In recognized annual surveys these workers are ranked “well into the ninety percentile”, performing above industry standard.

As a logical progression, in 2000 as construction and development of the D’Amato Federal Court House was completed, the Federal government awarded a janitorial contract to The Corporate Source. By 2003, they were so confident in the work of The Corporate Source that the contract evolved into Total Facilities Management including maintenance, landscaping and snow removal. More than 30 TCS employees work alongside a variety of federal employees, including 16 federal judges. Judges have been so impressed by their work that they held a lunch for these employees to express their appreciation for their commitment and outstanding performance. Michael Kramer, CEO of The Corporate Source, said “Our workers earned credibility for this enlarged opportunity. They proved that they could deliver when given a chance to do a job.”

Mr. Kramer mentioned that often cleaning, maintenance and janitorial tasks are perceived as “jobs of last resort” marked by high turnover and

a casual attitude. In contrast he said, “The workers provided by The Corporate Source are motivated when they are given these jobs. Sometimes this is their first position so they have a desire to prove what they can do. Among the 60+ TCS employees at the court complexes in Su olk, some have been employed since TCS first got the contract more than 20 years ago. The retention rate is well above the industry average and many employees are working there multiple years.”

TCS employees appreciate the stability that comes from work. Matt is a Heavy Equipment Mechanic at the D’Amato Federal Courthouse and over the past 23 years has worked his way up through the ranks of Janitor, to Project Worker and after taking additional training at BOCES, moved into his current role as a Mechanic. Matt is thankful for the support of his managers and supervisors who motivated and encouraged him to learn new skills and expand his role. He is grateful that work has given him the ability to provide for his wife and young children.

Richard, a TCS employee since 2017, reentered the workforce as a Janitor in the Su olk County Courthouse. Work not only helps him pay his bills and save for a new car, but also gives him a sense of pride and community. Richard is glad to complete his routine tasks and jump in when additional help is needed. “The people here are the best part of my job” said Richard. “Everyone is nice and I was really glad I got this opportunity to work for TCS.” His manager regularly hears compliments about his work and positive attitude.

healing process.

According to the National Alliance for Caregiving and the American Association for Retired Persons (AARP), there are 53 million caregivers nationwide. Of that number, 19% are unpaid. However, many of the paid caregivers wind up leaving their jobs.

The National Alliance for Caregiving/AARP poll found that 23% of the healthcare professionals experienced a decline in their health. Other reasons why they quit, according to Sandata, include poor communication, long hours, lack of recognition, long commutes, poor training and low pay.

“On this day, we should take time out and recognize those who take care of our loved ones when we aren’t able to,” Mr. McPeak says. “Their job is a demanding job and many of them work through the day without receiving even as much as a ‘thank you.’ On February 17, let’s take some time to show our heartfelt gratitude for them and the work they do.”

Winners Showcase Fine Art Exhibition at Mills Pond Gallery

Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to present Winners Showcase through Feb. 24 at Mills Pond Gallery. For information or directions visit millspondgallery. org or call 631-862-6575.

Mills Pond Gallery hours:

Wednesdays - Fridays 10 am – 4 pm and Saturdays and Sundays 12 pm – 4 pm. Admission to the Gallery is always free. The gallery is located at 660 NY-25A, St. James, NY.

All parking in rear lot off Mills Pond Rd. (directly across from 199 Mills Pond Rd.)

This exhibit features Winning artists from 2022 Members Showcase (Rhoda Gordon, Karin Dutra, Paul Mele), 2022 Long Island Landscape from Awe to Action (Renee Caine, Catherine Rezin, Angela Stratton)

Holtsville artist Renee Caine is a realist or representational painter who specializes in watercolor and oil paintings. “My paintings are a visual diary of where I have been and what I have seen. Striving to capture the calm and the tranquility of the places I paint, my work focuses on the beauty of texture, light, shadow

and contrast.

Port Jefferson artist Karin Dutra primarily works in pastels and oils. “My inspiration always comes from capturing a moment in time that evokes a special feeling within me. I hope to encourage people to see a more peaceful path through nature’s beauty.”

Port Jefferson Station artist Rhoda Gordon’s art is emboldened with color and textural elements that are both abstract and representational. The artist enjoys painting the local landscape and local street scenes as well as “pop art”, urban street scenes, still life, and floral.

Island Park photographer Paul Mele’s series Confinement speaks to the trials and tribulations Paul faced either physically or metaphorically throughout his lengthy rehabilitation after a car accident. The series takes us through the spaces of Paul’s life during a three-month hospital stay, nine months in a wheelchair and three years of physical therapy. As brief introductions to stories not fully told, his photographs invite us to

explore and reinterpret these spaces and consider the attitudes and state of mind of those who occupy them in a world far less simple than it sometimes seems.

Nesconset artist Catherine Rezin spent most of my career as a Commercial Artist and is now enjoying the freedom and joy of creating art for

her own desire. “Inspired by the beauty of nature, I never run out of sources of inspiration living on Long Island. I am in awe of the spectacular surroundings that are always around me and am passionate in my desire to convey these images in my art.”

Selden artist Angela Stratton was inspired to

become an artist in her early years of employment at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Always immensely intrigued by the great masters, Angela pursued her education in the master’s tradition of academic realism focusing on the Portrait and Figure. but enjoys still life and plein air landscape painting as

well. “I love being able to dedicate each and every day to the art of creating.”

Rocky Point Orchestra Students Selected For LISFA Ensembles

Three orchestra students from Rocky Point High School were selected to participate in the Long Island String Festival Association’s Festival. High School orchestra students Olivia Alabi (violin), Yuuki Donnelly (violin) and Sofia Haviland (cello) were each selected to be a part of the

LISFA Secondary rehearsal and concert, held recently at Smithtown High School. The students worked hard to elevate their musical skills expertise under the leadership of Rocky Point Middle School/High School orchestra director Mr. Nicholas Butcher.

Acceptance into the LISFA Festival is a tremendous honor. Students were selected based on a combination of their New York State School Music Association Solo Festival evaluation scores being the main criteria coupled with teacher written recommendations.
