Simple Ways To Be Good To Yourself Years ago, I was roaming the aisles of Costco and picked up a book, titled, 101 Simple Ways to Be Good To Yourself by Donna Watson Ph.D. I’ve been re-reading it ever since. As we grow older and our responsibilities mount, we lose touch with our own needs. Children, spouses, jobs (second jobs), mortgages, car payments, friends in need…the list is endless. The weekdays bleed into each other in a frenetic blur, and on weekends we can barely catch up on sleep, catch our breath and take the kids to their weekend activities. Sometimes “adulting” can make you want to cry “Uncle.” Most likely, you’re running on fumes. If your battle cry of the moment is, “Stop the ride, I wanna get off!” a few small adjustments can recharge a burnt out battery.

There are plenty of simple ways to be good to you, which will, in turn, help you be good to others.

BREATHE. Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, stop right there and breathe. Breathe out all of the air in your body through your mouth. Count to four and

then breathe in through your nose, filling up your abdomen (not your chest). Hold for four seconds. Then, slowly let the air leak out through your mouth as your belly deflates. Repeat.

LAUGH. Make YouTube your friend. I personally love the television show, All In The Family. When I need a good laugh, I cue up a full episode on YouTube and laugh myself silly.

Laughing is good for the soul.

LISTEN. Nothing soothes me like Jazz music. Did you know that brain surgeons play their favorite music in the operating room to take the pressure off? Sometimes, in order to do your best, you have to actually place your attention elsewhere to remain centered and focused.

WALK. Take a walk in nature.

Walk briskly, look at the grass, the trees and the sky. Breathe in the crisp air, feel your body move and your heart rate slightly increase.

Feel your muscles working to move your body.

SPEND TIME WITH ANIMALS. If you have a dog or a cat, spend time cuddling and petting your

animal companion. Really take in their energy. If you don’t live with any animals, consider spending time at a dog park to be around animals, or at a local horse stable.

Spending time around animals is healing.

TAKE A LESSON. You don’t have to make a commitment, time-wise or financially. You can simply take a lesson or two for fun. It will bring a sense of play and adventure to your life. Do it by yourself, or bring a friend or family member along.

TAKE A MINI-BREAK. Look for Groupons or off-season deals for short weekend getaways that are within driving distance, and change your environment for 48 hours...or 24 hours if you must.

MASSAGE. Everywhere you go now, there are massage and nail spas. Carve out 30 minutes and go for a shoulder rub or a relaxing foot rub... just because.

These are just a few of the simple things you can do to be good to yourself. Being good to yourself is like saving money in the bank. You can then spread the wealth to the ones you love.

Mid-Island Band Festival Earl L. Vandermeulen High School band students, along with students from Hauppauge, Miller Place, PatchogueMedford, Sayville and West Islip high schools, participated in the 61st annual Mid-Island Band Festival on January 25th and 26th.

Hosted by the Port Jefferson School District, the festival included a performance conducted by Michael Gianetta, a veteran Long Island music teacher from the Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District.

The school district congratulates all of the participating students.

The Suffolk County Bar Association and the Suffolk Academy of Law production "Another Night" won the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) Innovation Award in the Big Bar Category at the Annual Meeting, January 18, 2019.

The dramatization details the journey of 14- and 19- year old siblings who move from legitimate pain killers into addiction to opioids and heroin. The story, spearheaded by SCBA President, Justin M. Block, follows the two siblings’ journey through prescribed medication, to illicit drugs, and arrest through prosecution in the Suffolk County Courts and tackles the increasingly serious epidemic of opioid and heroin addiction in Suffolk County.

The older sibling goes to District Court on criminal charges, while the younger one goes to Family Court.

February’s Charity of the Month is: Paws of War

“Helping Both Ends of The Leash” Paws of War is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military Veterans who suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each Veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love that only a companion animal can bring! Since 2014, Paws of War has supported over 100 Veterans with service dogs rescued from kill shelters.

The Paws of War Service Dog Program relies heavily on the support of their community and volunteers. Through this program they are able to provide service dogs and their training to Veterans in need at no cost, truly providing them with a miracle! A service dog can help combat the daily symptoms of PTSD. They are trained to pick up stress signals and intervene with their owner to direct their focus back to a positive environment. They can also greatly increase the quality of life for someone suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury. Paws of War trains service dogs to combat the daily issues that someone suffering from TBI has.

Each service dog given out is intensely trained before handed off to the Veteran.

The lives of many American Heroes have been changed forever because of what this organization has done for them!

Community Education Program - This program allows Paws of War to work with members of their local community.

Through this program, they are able to provide a direct connection between Veterans and the younger population.

Vets to Vets Medical RV - This mobile RV provides certain medical services for service animals at no cost to Veterans!

( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss—is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives.

Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Easy Vegan Pasta Bolognese

What You Will Need

1/2 cup diced portobello mushrooms 1/2 cup sweet green peas 1 24 oz. jar of Ragu Traditional Pasta Sauce (no sugar added variety) 2 tablespoons red wine 1 pinch of salt 1 pinch of black pepper 1 sprinkle of turmeric 1/4 package of Smart Ground meatless soy crumbles 2 heaping tablespoons dairy-free butter substitute 1 box of your favorite pasta

How To Make It Melt butter substitute in a large or medium sized skillet and add in Smart Ground soy crumbles. Mash up and turn crumbles as they brown (about 4 minutes). Turn off heat and set aside.

Pour jar of pasta sauce into a medium or large saucepan, turn on medium heat and stir in diced mushrooms and cooked soy crumbles. Let sauce simmer and then add in tumeric, salt, pepper and red wine; stire altogether, turn heat to low and cover tightly to re-simmer.

Boil water and cook pasta for approximately 10 minutes until al dente. (soft, but slightly firm). Rinse and drain pasta and set aside.

Steam peas in the microwave or 2-3 minutes and stir peas into sauce.

Remove covered sauce from heat.

Plate pasta, pour sauce over pasta and enjoy!

Rocky Point High School helped to shine a light on a large cause for concern this January as the building recognized Human Rights Trafficking Awareness Day. According to the Department of State, the top three states in the United States with the most human trafficking activity are California, Texas and New York. The Global Slavery Index in

2018 estimates that on any given day in 2016, there were 403,000 people living in conditions of modern slavery in the United States.

In honor of Human Rights Trafficking Awareness Day, Rocky Point’s Human Rights Club spread awareness of this cause and placed small blue hearts (blue being the color that symbolizes human trafficking awareness) on

the doors and doorways of the high school building to show shocking facts and statistics around the school. With the knowledge students gained from the blue hearts, it was the club’s hope to have students want to show their support by signing their pledge to help end Human Trafficking on a large blue heart before and after school.

Middle School Math Masters Students in Port Jefferson Middle School math teacher Matt Garofola’s Algebra 1 class have been involved in the Mathematical Association of America’s American Mathematics 8 Competition for close to a decade. With no formal preparation for the test, just some sample questions provided by Garofola, students applied classroom skills to unique mathematical challenges

in a 25-question, multiple choice format. The exam helps to promote the development of problemsolving skills and an enjoyment and lifelong appreciation for the study of mathematics.

“I have seen more and more students embrace this challenge each year,” Garofola said. “Many of the students are eager to participate and challenge themselves to not only become our school and/

or class champion, but to continue on in their studies of mathematical concepts and confidence in analytical thinking.”

Reading Is Sweet Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School students proved that they have a love for reading as they read more than 500,000 minutes this January during this year’s We Are Reading More initiative.

Throughout the monthlong program, students read independently at home and at school, keeping a log of their efforts, and participated in a number of activities and days.

Keeping with this year’s theme of Reading is Sweet, students decorated paper candies with their favorite book titles and authors and created paper cupcakes with nonfiction facts,

which were displayed in the building. They pledge to stay device free on an electronic blackout day, wore their favorite team shirts on team day and shared their favorite Time for Kids articles and writing pieces with family and friends.

Additionally, special guests, including author Peter Catalanotto and award-winning singer/ songwriter Jared Campbell, shared their personal life stories and words of encouragement for overcoming obstacles.

Mr. Catalanotto spoke about the desire to always be an artist and the evolution into becoming a writer as well while

Mr. Campbell performed a number of songs he has written, focused on the value of creating lasting relationships and embracing the value of others.

Students earned rewards throughout the month, including raffle tickets to become eligible for various prizes to entertainment establishments and stores in the area. Winners of the raffles were announced during the culminating WARM activity. Teachers donned silly outfits and went head to head in grade level races to celebrate all of the students efforts and accomplishments.

Science Olympiad Team The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Science Olympiad team placed fourth out of 52 teams who competed at the Eastern Long Island Regional Science Olympiad, recently held at Ward Melville High School.

Their ranking allows them to compete against the best teams across New York State on March 15 and 16 at Le Moyne College in Syracuse.

The students competed in categories including genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology in active, hands-on group participation – a required skill in their future scientific careers.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the completion of more than $7 million in dredge work as part of the county 20182019 Priority Waterway Dredging Program.

The Suffolk County Department of Public Works has now completed dredge work in seventeen priority waterways across six towns to ensure safe passage for the commercial and residential fishing and boating industries.

“This completion marks an important milestone to ensure that our waterways are safer for boaters throughout Long Island,” said County Executive Bellone.

“Now our commercial fishing and boating industries can have greater confidence when navigating local waterways while also strengthening our shoreline.”

Suffolk County utilized an in-house, four-person dredge crew under the Department of Public Works Waterways section in addition to third-party contractors. All together in 2018-2019, projects where

completed in the Towns of Riverhead, Southold, Southampton, East Hampton, Shelter Island

and Islip.

In total, approximately 167,000 cubic yards of dredged material has been placed along approximately 11,000 feet of shoreline to restore local beaches and increase storm resiliency.

Additionally, the County Executive announced the completion of two restoration projects with significant public benefit: the Meschutt County Park Beach Nourishment and the Coecles Harbor Revitalization project.

The Meschutt County Park Beach Nourishment

project restored approximately 1,300 feet of bathing beach in the park, which is located along the Great Peconic Bay, providing residents with areas for bathing, snorkeling, windsurfing and sailing. In addition, the protective feature design of the newly nourished beach includes an engineered berm that increases storm resiliency. Over the past 3 years this Park has hosted close to 150,000 visitors and yielded over $400,000 in parking revenue alone.

Coecles Harbor, often referred to as the ‘Jewel of the Peconics, underwent extensive shoreline restoration helping address a critical need for the town of Shelter Island. Crews completed dredge work in the Harbor restoring safe passage for thousands of boaters that utilize the harbor annually for public uses such as long-term and short-term transient mooring, and recreational pursuits including boating, fishing, and shell fishing.

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory is seeking nominations for the Suffolk County Office of the Aging and the Suffolk County Senior Citizens Advisory Board’s 2019 Senior Citizen of the Year Award.

The Senior Citizen of the Year Award recognizes a senior citizen who has significantly contributed to other seniors in a meaningful and important way, either as an advocate, role model, leader, or volunteer. This impact can be felt either countywide, or in one of the local communities.

Nominations must include the nominee’s

name, address, phone number and a brief explanation of their accomplishments.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced 30 Suffolk County Police Officers participated in a specialized week-long training program designed to help officers address the needs of individuals suffering from mental illness. The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training program, conducted by the Institute for Police, Mental Health & Community Collaboration and paid for by a New York State Office of Mental Health grant, works to improve the way law enforcement and the community respond to people experiencing mental health crises.

“This specialized training program brings together all stakeholders to guarantee that our police officers have the tools necessary to effectively do their job," said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. "The skills that are developed will better assist those dealing with a mental health emergency and enhance public safety.”

“The Suffolk County Police Department is committed to continuing to ensure that our officers in the field are well-versed and highly trained in as many scenarios as possible, including those pertaining to mental health and crisis management situations," said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart. "With

the continuing goal of enhancing our community relations platform, this training ensures that our participating officers have the ability to efficiently act and communicate with our residents when needed most."

“Crisis Intervention Training will give our police officers the tools and skill set that will enable them to do their job safely and effectively,” said Dr. James Tomarken, Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Services. “Research shows that CIT is associated with improved officer attitude and knowledge about mental illness.”

The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training program has become a nationally recognized model for safely and effectively assisting people with mental and substance use disorders.

CIT training consists of law enforcement, mental health providers and advocates, and emergency services personnel, who provide officers with the knowledge, skills and support necessary to deescalate situations and divert individuals suffering from mental illness from the criminal justice system when appropriate.

The program is built on robust partnerships between law enforcement, mental health providers and individuals and families affected by mental

illness. The goals of the CIT program is to reduce the number of arrests of individuals with mental illnesses, to help divert these individuals to treatment programs or support services, and to eliminate hostile incidents between police officers and individuals suffering from mental illness.

The week long training program provided to the Suffolk County Police Department covered a variety of topics including communication and deescalation, indicators of emotional distress, mental illness and recovery, psychiatric, trauma posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), personality and mood disorders. Other topics included substance abuse, suicide assessment and intervention, officer wellness, anxiety issues, developmental disabilities, dementia, veterans, juveniles & transitionage youth, community resources, and a consumer and family interaction panel.

In February, key staff from the Suffolk County Police Department, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, the Suffolk County Office of Mental Hygiene and local advocates will participate in a kickoff event sponsored by the New York State Senate CIT training program initiative to further expand the CIT response model.
