This bottom to top tour takes you from the auxiliary generator and the Light Keepers workshop in the basement of the Keeper’s Quarters to the beacon in the lantern room of the lighthouse tower. Volunteers Needed Fresh Air summers are filled with children running barefoot through the grass, gazing at starfilled skies and swimming for the first time. This summer, join volunteer host families in Suffolk County, and open your heart and home to a Fresh Air child. Each summer, thousands of children from New York City’s low-income communities visit suburban, rural and small town communities along the East Coast and Southern Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program. Harlen, age 9, has visited the Tornatore family for two summers. Host dad Albert shared, “Harlen has definitely learned to try new things. I remember our first summer. He was nervous but by the end of the first week, Harlen and my son were having adventures and having so much fun. We went to
the aquarium, amusement park, and the kids love the beach.” “My kids get so excited when they get to see Harlen. This summer we went to a drive-in movie, and we were all in the backseat with blankets, pillows and popcorn, snuggled together. Harlen is simply part of our family,” says host mom Allyson. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New
York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from seven to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. I ended last week’s column hoping that this month of February would bring with it a little more sunshine into all of our lives… While this is a nice sentiment, of course we know that life does not always work this way, and there are plenty of storm clouds to weather along the way. This just reinforces the notion that we must all take the time to appreciate the little things in life, the special moments, those people we love and the many memories we share, as we simply never know when they will become precisely that… just a faded memory among many others. After the passing of my grandfather nearly a year ago, and the subsequent sale of the
house that my grandparents had called home for more than 50 years, there was obviously much cleaning out and sorting through mementos to be done. In some ways, this was the most difficult task of all. To me, nearly everything held some sort of significance, some deep emotional attachment which evoked so many precious recollections of years gone by. Of course, these are just objects, material possessions which hardly make up for the loss of the person they are associated with. But the photographs… those are truly special. And boy, are there photographs. I, being of the slightly OCD nature, coupled with my fervent love of all things photography, volunteered to take on the initial task
of sorting through and cataloging the boxes upon boxes of albums, envelopes full of developed photos and a few dozen or so frames and collages. Several months later, I’ve barely made a dent in the process. But it doesn’t matter. There’s no rush where memories are concerned. They should be carefully recollected, and savored. Every single photograph tells a story; and every story unlocks a treasure trove of feelings and emotions – some happy, some sad, some wistful… all meaningful in their own respective ways. And winter, while it may not bring a lot of sunshine into our lives, is the perfect time to take a moment to appreciate all the memories that do.

The Suffolk Academy of Law leads the way as the Suffolk County Coordinator for the New York State Bar Association Mock Trial for High School Students. The Mock Trial Program is co-sponsored by The New York Bar Foundation, where high school students have the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of civil/criminal law and courtroom procedures. Thousands of students participate each year. The objectives of the tournament are to teach students about ethics, civility and professionalism in the practice of law. The competition promotes the students understanding of the law, court procedures and the legal system, and aims to improve proficiency in basic life skills, such as listening, speaking, reading and reasoning. The Program works to promote better communication among the school community, teachers, students and members of the legal profession and is geared toward heightening the appreciation for academic studies and stimulating interest in law-related careers. The County Coordinators are responsible for fielding teams from the schools in Suffolk County, distributing materials to teams, providing attorney mentors to teams in need, arranging the local tournament schedule, securing tournament space and judges, resolving any conflicts, and collecting all relevant Continuing Legal Education (CLE) information. Volunteer attorneys are able to gain CLE credits for their volunteer participation in the Program. A tournament trophy

As part of their study on the Native Americans, fourth-grade students at W.S. Mount Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District participated in a hands-on workshop called Journey into American Indian Territory. The program brought the history and lives of the Eastern Woodlands people into the classroom through visual presentations and
group activities. Students began the twoday program by watching a video about Native Americans and spent the afternoon visiting a traveling museum of artifacts and learning how to play traditional games that encouraged teamwork and honed survival skills. Throughout the museum tour, the students took an up-close look at animal pelts, musical instruments,
traditional clothing, athletic equipment and hunting tools. They also each took a turn grounding corn and touring a replica longhouse. On the second day of the program, the students learned about Native American government and created clay duck decoys using traditional techniques and materials.

R.C. Murphy Junior High School students and staff celebrated the beauty and culture of three different world languages as they marked “Foreign Language Week.” During the weeklong celebration, students participated in a trivia contest, door decorating contest, a traveling art exhibit was on display in the hallways and music
from different countries played during passing time between classes. Additionally, members of the Foreign Language Honor Society hosted a series of events for the district’s elementary students. They hosted “cooking and culture” classes on three separate afternoons, each one focused on either the Spanish, Italian and
French language. Also, for the first time in over 15 years, the FLHS students visited with the sixthgraders at Nassakeag, Arrowhead and W.S. Mount elementary schools and presented mini-lessons to introduce them to the foreign language options available for study at the junior high level.

Kindness Challenge theme items and students were welcomed to school by special community helper volunteers. Each day of the week followed a different theme, including ones that featured special assemblies and called for students and staff members to wear special coordinated clothing items. Additionally, throughout
the celebration, the students and staff members worked to complete kind act checklists and fill in a large kindness tree painted in one of the school’s hallway with paper hearts celebrating the number of kind deeds they had completed. Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School fifthgraders in Dave Falcone’s class are working to cultivate kindness in the school and community as part of a multiyear initiative they call “Got Kindness?” As part of the project, the class has created bulletin boards highlighting the kind acts of school community members and student writing
pieces. The students are also distributing “Seeds of Kindness” cards to help cultivate kind acts and have created a “No Bully Zone” display that features specific strategies for students to encourage fellow classmates to always be kind and helpful toward others. The initiative is funded through a teacher’s grant Mr. Falcone received from the ReesSpecht Life
Foundation two years ago. The goal of the ReesSpecht Life Foundation is to remind people about the importance of community, compassion and respect. The organization promotes the ideals of cultivating kindness through a memorial scholarship, teacher grants, and an awareness campaign featuring “Seeds of Kindness” Cards and “Pay it Forward” Cards.

Soccer Player Signs With her parents standing beside her, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Jillian Colucci signed a letter of intent to attend Marist College in the fall on a full soccer scholarship at a signing ceremony on February 1st. Colucci, an accomplished athlete, holds a number of titles. She is an All-Long Island Soccer Player,
Suffolk County Soccer Player of the Year and has been named an AllAmerican soccer player by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. She also recently helped lead her school’s varsity soccer team to two back-to-back Class C State Championships. In addition to playing varsity soccer since the seventh grade, Colucci is
a member of her school’s varsity basketball team, president of the Varsity Club, a member of the National Honor Society and treasurer of the Interact Club. “We couldn’t be more proud of Jillian,” said Danielle Turner, director of physical education, health and athletics.
Expressing Dreams In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Kelly Birnstein’s class at Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School in the Rocky Point School District learned about Dr. King’s dream for a better world and spoke about the dreams they each have for
the world and their future selves. The students created a cloud bulletin board to showcase the dreams they shared and multisensory art project to celebrate the diversity that exists in the world. The class invited
members of the school community – both peers and faculty members – to join in the celebration by adding extra dream-filled paper clouds to the bulletin board.

Throughout the month of February, Port Jefferson Middle School students are participating in the school’s second annual Random Acts of Kindness initiative, which aims to promote kindness within
the school. During the month, students will be participating in kindness activities surrounding a theme of “The Power of 1: How one person can make a huge impact for
their local community.” Activities planned by teacher Monica Consalvo include a food drive, locker decorating and a smile day where students will share smile stickers with each other.
Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures
than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should
probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Many doctors are learning more about this testing device at www. hologic.com.

how words and symbols are very powerful. The field trip aimed at inspiring students to bring back what they learned to their home schools and spread the awareness through club activities. The event was sponsored by the Suffolk Center on the Holocaust, Diversity and Human Understanding, the Suffolk County Interfaith Anti-Bias Task Force and the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission.
