Family & Children’s Association www.fcali.org With locations across Nassau and Suffolk, Family & Children’s Association (FCA) is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to providing help and hope to Long Island’s most vulnerable children, families, seniors and communities. FCA envisions a Long Island where a legacy of optimal health, educational success and economic security passes from one generation to the next; each year it serves 30,000 individuals and families in Suffolk and Nassau counties. Its mission strives to make our island a better place for all of us to live, work and raise a family.

FCA has served Long Islanders since 1884 and today its more than 40 programs fall into five big areas of need: Addiction Prevention, Treatment & Recovery Taking on addiction from every angle, beginning with prevention. Recovery support services are offered Islandwide with offices from Hempstead to Westhampton Beach.

Children’s Mental Health & Wellness This division offers an array of services and supports designed to promote the health and wellness of children and their families. The services are for individuals up to 21 years of age who have or are at risk of developing a mental health diagnosis. Services are always free to clients, voluntary, family-driven, strength-based, and culturally competent, with location and scheduling tailored to each family’s needs. They also provide support for the families of individuals with mental and/ or behavioral health issues.

Prevention & Family Support FCA’s prevention team provides critical services to at-risk children and families including a nursery co-op program,

alcohol and substance abuse and gun violence r e d u c t i o n program, and more, through collaboration, education, and advocacy.

Residential Care FCA operates four residences that focus on quality care, seamless transitions and well-managed aftercare services for youth. Nassau Haven and Walkabout provide emergency shelter and longer term transitional housing for homeless, runaway and trafficked youth. Two other residences support children and young adults with serious emotional disturbances or mental health issues.

Senior & Adult Services FCA believes that every senior deserves to live with dignity, safety and independence. FCA helps more than 10,000 seniors a year with meal deliveries, caregiver support, home visits for companionship, elder abuse prevention and advocacy.

The number of people who turn to FCA for help is growing and with it, the need for donations to close gaps in government funding. FCA’s programs and services are greatly enhanced by the involvement of others, whether through donations of time or money, and welcome the help of all Long Islanders to further its mission. Therefore, if you would like to get involved with this organization, you can!

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School varsity football quarterback Luke Filippi was awarded 1st Team All-State football honors by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

Luke is the first Port Jefferson School District football player to be selected 1st Team AllState since Chris Colmer received this award in 1998. Colmer went on to

play in the NFL for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In addition to his outstanding performance in football, Luke is also a standout baseball player. He will play baseball in his freshman year in September 2022 at the University of Albany.

Luke thanked the New York State Sportswriters Association for selecting him to receive the coveted award. “A big thankyou to my teammates,

especially the linemen. I wouldn’t have received this award without all of their hard work and support throughout the season,” he said.

Varsity coach Andrew Cosci shared his pride in Luke, stating, “This is a fitting end to a great high school career for this young man. I couldn’t be more proud of him.”

ROCKY POINT EAGLE SUCCESS -Rocky Point High School student Alexandra Kelly was named the outstanding individual performer at the 2022 Stanner Games, which were held at the New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory in Washington Heights, New York, on Jan. 16. Alexandra won both the triple jump and long jump at this elite meet venue that boasts an Olympic-caliber track. She also set the meet record in the triple jump with a 40-feet, ½-inch jump.

Port Jefferson Royals On The Mat The Port Jefferson School District wrestling team shined in the annual Armstrong Cup wrestling tournament hosted at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School this past weekend, Jan. 22-23. The Royals came away with four weight class champions: Frankie D’Elia, 110 pounds; Anthony Evangelista, 152 pounds (three-time tournament champion); Anthony Pipia, 160 pounds and Willy Rodriguez, 215 pounds. Pipia also had the most pins in the least amount of time, registering five pins in 7:40.

The Royals also had eight

other wrestlers finish in the top four of their weight class: Nick Rodriguez, third at 102 pounds; Cade Delgado, third at 118 pounds; Chris Lotten, third at 126 pounds; Liam Rogers, second at 132 pounds; Braeden Cesarski, fourth at 138 pounds, Preston Biedenkapp, fourth at 172 pounds; Junior Beltran, fourth at 189 pounds and Jagger Celentano, third at 285 pounds.

“Due to a shortened season and COVID restrictions, we weren’t able to host any tournaments last year,”

said Adam Sherrard, director of health, physical education, athletics and nursing. “It was great to keep the tradition going and host the Armstrong Cup again this year. Our wrestlers certainly did not disappoint, with outstanding performances across the board. With close to 100 wrestlers involved, it was exciting to see Port Jefferson wrestling dominate the tournament.”

The Royals will host a multiteam dual meet tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 2, in which they will highlight their seniors.

New York Farm Bureau Seeking 2022 Scholarship Applicants New York high school seniors who are graduating and interested in pursuing a career in agriculture can apply for New York Farm Bureau’s Agricultural Youth Scholarship. Eligible students can use the financial award for college or advanced training in the skilled trades. Statewide winners can earn up to $3,000 towards their future education.

The applicant or their family must be a New York Farm Bureau member, and the student must live and/or work a farm or be involved

with agriculture in the state. The student must also complete the application which includes writing an essay addressing what they value and stand for in agriculture and life and how these values have impacted their decision to pursue an agricultural career.

Scoring will determine both county and district winners and may include a personal interview. Each district winner will receive $250 and then compete for one of two state scholarships worth $3,000 and $2,000, based on their submitted

applications. Applications must be submitted by March 1, 2022, and the judging will take place prior to April 20, 2022.

Abby is known for resiliency in her pursuit of improvement, not only in herself but also in others.

A member of the varsity girls soccer team, she helped lead the team to the Long Island Championship this past fall. She also helped the varsity girls basketball team win two consecutive Suffolk County championships and has been with the varsity team since she was in seventh grade. Besides demonstrating her leadership and success in athletics, Abby also sets the example of how to deal with adversity. When faced with the conflict of having no high school softball team at the high school, Abby decided to join the

varsity baseball team, taking the challenge headon and earning a spot in the starting lineup.

In addition to her leadership in athletics, Abby is dedicated to her academics and community.

She is a member of several school clubs, has an overall GPA of more than 99 and has more than 500 hours of community service.

“Abby is one of those students who you look at and think, I want my daughter to grow up to be just like her,” Athletic Director Adam Sherrard said. “The way she treats people, carries herself and her tireless work ethic are things that her peers look up to. Ward Melville High School students Amber Luo and Billy Zhang were named scholars in the 2022 Regeneron Science Talent Search based on original projects they completed through the Three Village Central School District’s InSTAR science research program.

The Regeneron Science Talent Search scholars were selected from 1,805 applications received from 603 high schools across 46 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and eight other countries. Scholars were chosen based on their exceptional research skills,

commitment to academics, innovative thinking and promise as scientists, and hail from 185 American and international high schools and homeschools in 37 states, China, Switzerland and Singapore.

With the assistance of professional mentors and teachers, the students conducted in depth, hands-on projects based on two specific scientific matters. Amber’s project was titled, “RiboBayes: A Wavelet Transform-Based Computational Platform to Assess the Transcriptomic Distribution and Regulation of Ribosome

Pause Sites in Ribosome Profiling Data.” Billy’s project was titled, “Hydra: Succinct Pipelineable Interactive Arguments of Knowledge for Verifiable Neural Networks.”

Each student will be awarded $2,000 in recognition of their hard work and novel discoveries. On Jan. 20, 40 of the 300 scholars will be named Regeneron Science Talent Search finalists, who will then compete for more than $1.8 million in awards during a weeklong competition taking place March 10-16.

For those who aren’t fans of the game, Super Bowl Sunday is still a chance to chow down and socialize with friends and family.

There’s no right or wrong way to watch the Super Bowl, but some might consider a Super Bowl soiree without chicken wings a major faux

pas. For those who want to avoid such a misstep, this recipe for “Virgil’s Smoked Chicken Wings With Blue Cheese Dip” from Neal Corman’s “Virgil’s Barbecue Road Trip Cookbook” (St. Martin’s Press) is sure to please.

Virgil’s Smoked Chicken Wings With Blue Cheese Dip Serves 4

Blue Cheese Dip 2 cups blue cheese crumbles, divided 1 cup mayonnaise 1⁄2 cup buttermilk 2 teaspoons hot sauce 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1⁄2 teaspoon kosher salt 1⁄4 cup finely chopped scallions 1⁄4 cup finely chopped celery Marinade 1⁄2 cup vegetable oil 1⁄2 cup hot sauce 4 tablespoons Virgil’s Dry Rub (see below) 1. To make the dip, combine 1 cup of the blue cheese, mayonnaise, buttermilk, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and salt in the bowl of a food processor and blend on low until smooth.

2. Remove to a medium mixing bowl and fold in the rest of the blue cheese, scallions and celery, being sure to break up the larger blue cheese crumbles.

Place in a covered container and refrigerate overnight.

3. Mix all the marinade ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Place the wings in a large container with a lid and pour the mixture over the wings.

Toss until the wings are thoroughly coated. Cover and refrigerate for 2 days.

4. Preheat the grill or smoker to 245 F. 5. Spread out the wings on a sheet pan and wipe away any excess marinade.

Sprinkle liberally with the dry rub, coating the wings all over.

6. Position the wings on the grill away from the direct heat of the coals or burners, and add hickory to the smoker or hickory

7. Cook the wings for about 3 hours, flipping every 30 minutes (their internal temperature should be about 165 F when cooked).

8. While the wings are cooking, cut the butter for the sauce into 1-inch cubes and refrigerate. Whisk the cornstarch into the white vinegar, in a small bowl.

9. In a medium sauté pan over medium heat, bring the hot sauce to a simmer and whisk in the thickened vinegar. Return to a simmer, cook for 1 minute, and remove from the heat.

Greeting cards are popular ways to express love and affection on Valentine’s Day. However, those looking to say “I love you” and much more in a creative way may want to harken back to a tradition that is several centuries old.

Purse puzzles were once an innovative way to send notes and illustrations and express other sentiments. Purse puzzles became popular

around 1720 and remained so until roughly 1840. The puzzles consisted of a sheet of paper folded into smaller parts. When unfolded, the purse puzzle would reveal several messages and handdrawn art.

In the 19th century, purse puzzles were a clever way for lovers to send love notes on Valentine’s Day or other times of the year. Purse

puzzles were a form of paper art, similar to origami.

Origins Of The Heart-Shaped Chocolate Box Hearts abound on February 14, and few symbols (and gifts) are more widely associated with a holiday than heartshaped boxes of chocolate are with Valentine’s Day. Chocolates became trendy in the mid-19th century when the first chocolate bar was made

by British company J.S. Fry & Sons by combining cacao powder with sugar and cacao butter to make a rich, melt-in-your-mouth treat that was markedly different than the gritty and greasy drinking chocolate that was losing popularity in Europe. Within a few years, competitor Cadbury introduced the first box of chocolates. It was called the “Fancy Box” and it didn’t take long to become wildly popular.

The marriage of chocolate and heartshaped boxes seemed a

natural progression, but the National Valentine Collectors Association says that heart-shaped boxes actually predate chocolate boxes.

Various heartshaped vessels, including “betrothal pendants” and silver boxes in the shape of hearts, were popularized a century earlier. There even were heart-shaped porcelain boxes as well as ones for sewing.

Having already introduced a chocolate box, Richard Cadbury marketed the first Valentine’s Day box in 1861. It was filled with delicious chocolates, and later could be saved as a keepsake to store special notes or other mementos, according to the North American Packaging Association. Furthermore, the gift fit with Victorian sensibilities in that it was demurely suggestive, NPR reports. Its introduction
