World Heritage provides academic year and semester exchange programs in the United States for high school students from around the world. Students are 15 to 18 years of age, have passed a series of academic and character requirements and are awaiting an opportunity to embark on their American adventure. World Heritage representatives have the opportunity to support American high school students through this transformative year abroad.

Area representatives recruit and screen prospective host families, supervise the exchange students in their community throughout the year, and interview American students who wish to spend a semester, year or summer abroad.

Peacocks & Pretty Things Beauty. They say it is in the eye of the beholder; but truly, it exists all around us, if we take the time to notice. My love of photography has certainly enhanced my ability to appreciate the aesthetics of my surroundings, from interesting cloud formations while waiting for sunsets, to pretty roadside blossoms that would otherwise be characterized as weeds to the undiscerning eye, to the novelty of light and shadow as it plays out upon a surface. Such is the abstract nature of visual “art.”

And then there are the moments when it appears before you in its most natural, stunningly striking form.

Case in point: several weeks ago, my friend and I enjoyed a late lunch at the famed Milleridge Inn, having both decided that it was the perfect locale after having not dined there in quite some time.

To our surprise, the holiday lights were still on full display, with remnants of the Christmas season in every corner of the restaurant and shops. Having just finished dismantling my own decorations the previous week, I was at once

nostalgic and slightly weary of them.

As we exited the bakery and made our way to the official Christmas shop located on the property, I spotted what appeared to be a large bird sitting on the railing of the ice cream parlor.

“Is that real?” I whispered to my friend, “Or just a decoration?”

We stared intently, only to be instantly startled. “It moved! Oh my gosh, it moved!”

As we tentatively approached, we realized it was a GIANT peacock. And with that, no less than half a dozen others peered out from behind various corners and crevices, along with several chickens and peahens. Unfazed by the humans before them, they moseyed to and fro, pausing briefly to study us. Thoroughly infatuated, we wandered after them, attempting to snap pictures and even a few short videos of these majestic feathered creatures.

As I knelt down and tentatively reached my hand out toward one especially beautiful specimen, my friend grabbed my phone to

capture the sight. The bird cocked his head slightly, examining me carefully, then strode purposefully toward me. Unsure if he was planning to sit on my lap or - more likely - to take a sizable bite out of me, I froze, backing away slightly. “Did you get the picture?” I nervously called to my friend. “Yes, I think I took about 27 of them,” she replied giggling.

Alright then, no sense pushing my luck. I quickly stood up as the peacock stared at me, seemingly perplexed.

“Sorry pretty bird, thanks for the photo op.” And with that, he fluttered his massive wings and took off, soaring to a nearby tree branch. By that point, a small crowd had gathered around us, amazed that this one bird had taken such an apparent liking to me. A little boy exclaimed to his parents, “Wow, they fly???”

Peering up at the bird, now perched overhead, my friend and I looked at each other in utter amazement.

“That,” I said, “was clearly the highlight of the day.”

Beauty. It’s everywhere.

LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone.

If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events.

Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind ~ Smithtown

www.GuideDog.org This organization exists to improve the quality of life for people that are blind, have low vision or have other special needs. They are currently in need of volunteer puppy raisers! Puppy raising is when an individual fosters a guide or service dog puppy in their home for the first year of its life. Although children can be involved in this process, they ask that all applicants are over 18 years of age. All puppy raisers are required to attend monthly puppy raising classes. To be approved for this program, you must undergo a home visit by a staff member or an approved volunteer. “Providing Hope Beyond The Food” . . . this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island.

Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry that reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help.

They operate a very impressive Food Outreach weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.

LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile manner because the Gospel

Caring For Older Adults (NAPSI)—With a growing aging population, the amount of family caregivers in the United States is also on the rise. There are nearly 45 million people who serve as a caregiver for a family member or friend who is 50 or older. Serving as a caregiver can be rewarding but difficult.

Often, caregivers are unaware of local aging resources that might be able to assist them.

The Eldercare Locator is a free, public service that connects older adults and caregivers to information about local resources and services such as meal delivery programs, transportation options, home modification assistance and inhome support services.

Additionally, caregivers can find out about support groups in their community and programs that offer a break from caregiving

responsibilities.

The Eldercare Locator also has free informational brochures for older adults and caregivers on topics such as medication management, preventing falls in the home, transportation options, avoiding financial exploitation, and brain health. Fifth-grade student Isabelle Chen took the Edna Louise Spear Elementary School title of top speller after correctly spelling “massacres.” She will now compete in the 2018 Hofstra Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee on February 4th.

Isabelle, who was

the school’s secondplace winner last year, studied a variety of words and definitions to be competition-ready.

At Hofstra, she will take a written test and if she is one of the top scorers, will be invited back the following week for the traditional oral spell down.

From there, winners move on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which takes place in Washington, D.C. later in the spring.

“We’re all proud of her accomplishment,” said her teacher Christine Wicks.

“We wish her the best of luck at the next step of the competition.”

Musical Accolades Seven Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students in the Port Jefferson School District attended the Long Island String Festival held recently at West Islip High School.

Robotics Teams Advance Rocky Point Middle School’s two robotics teams recently competed in the FIRST Long Island Qualifying Tournament in Smithtown and both qualified for the Championship Tournament in Longwood on March 4th based on their performance.

During the Smithtown event, the students competed against 27 other teams and captured the first three awards.

The Robo Eagles won the Alliance Award for scoring

the highest point total on the Robot Table as a pair in the Alliance Round and the prestigious “Judges Award” for their unique efforts, performance or dynamics.

The Radical Robotix team was awarded the “Project Research Award for their diverse resources to formulate an in-depth and comprehensive understanding of the problem they have identified.” This year’s competition theme is “Hydro Dynamics.” The research project chosen by

drawing from a young age.

Additionally, he showed the students the process for publishing a book – from the development of a manuscript and storyboards to the enlargement process and the role of an art director.

He also demonstrated how to draw some of his favorite figures.

Throughout the month of January, JAE students

have been taking part in a series of activities designed to further promote a lifelong love of reading.

They recorded the number of minutes they spent on independent reading for pleasure as well as took part in theme days such as “wear a shirt with words you can read” and an electronic blackout day.

Love of Programming To help share their enthusiasm for the topic, seven members of Ward Melville High School’s robotics team, the Iron Patriots, recently held its first two-hour introduction to programming class for elementary through high school students at the Emma S. Clark library.

The evening started with the students operating the VEX robots using remote controls trying to navigate a simple course. Once this was mastered, the next task was to use the arm/claw mechanism to pick up and

deliver various foam blocks to different points on the game table. At this point, the remote controls were taken away and the goal was to repeat the course in autonomous mode.

Autonomous operation requires that code be written using a variation of C++ that would enable the robot to travel the distance of the track in a sequence of “basketball drills,” crossing one line then traveling back to the start turn around then travel to a line further down the table. Students were given

instructions on how to write code and then the code was downloaded onto the robots and tested. After each section of code was proven to work correctly, additional code was added until the course was completed.

The evening was a tremendous success, as all the students had a great time learning and sharing their enthusiasm for robotics. The Iron Patriots are currently building the 2018 robot and are eagerly awaiting the completion in April.

Historians Win Big Three Village Central School District’s W.S. Mount Elementary School students showcased their myriad knowledge of historical information when they recently took part in the written stage of National History Bee.

As a result of their performance, 17 students advanced to the next level of the competition – the online contest – for the chance to compete at the regional level in March.

Mount students have advanced to the regional

level for the past two years.

Three Village Central School District’s Minnesauke Elementary School students and staff gathered together this winter for an enjoyable Family Fun Night organized by the physical education department with

the assistance of student, parent and teacher volunteers.

During the event, attendees took place in carnival games and activities in the gym and cafeteria, including face painting, dancing and light

Family Fun Night snacks. More than $1,474 was raised during the event, which will be used to support Minnesauke families in need. This is the fourth year this event has taken place.

United by Knitting Three Village Central School District’s R.C. Murphy Junior High School’s Community Connections Club recently lent their knitting skills to a worthy cause and created 470 caps for neonatal intensive care unit at Stony Brook University Hospital.

The after-school club, which is advised by teachers Ginger Ferraro and Emma Domino, established this project with the hospital three years ago as a way to give back to the local community. Each year, the club members have created and donated at least 300

caps for the cause.

This year’s donation was made extra special thanks to a donation from club member Caitlyn Calise and her grandma, who made more than 200 caps on their own.

Experiencing History

As part of their study on the first Americans, fourth-grade students at W.S. Mount Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District learned about Native Americans during a hands-on workshop called Journey into Native American Territory.

The program brought the history and lives of the

Eastern Woodlands people into the classroom through visual presentations and group activities.

Throughout the two-day program, students were able to travel through a museum of artifacts and learn how to play traditional games that encouraged teamwork and honed survival skills.

Additionally, students

learned about Native American government and created clay duck decoys using traditional techniques and materials.

Throughout the museum tour, the students took an up-close look at animal pelts, musical instruments, traditional clothing, athletic equipment and hunting tools.

Get a dilated eye exam.

Getting a comprehensive dilated eye exam is the only way to know if your eyes are healthy and you are seeing your best. Talk to your eye care professional about how often you should have one.

Live a healthy lifestyle.

Eating healthy foods, maintaining a healthy weight, managing chronic

conditions, and not smoking can lower your risk of eye disease.

Know your family history. Talk to your family members about their eye health history.
