Third grade students in Lisa Scrom’s music classes at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School had a special preholiday treat when members of the Three Village Chamber Players visited the school to perform excerpts from Haydn and

Borodin and some amazing arrangements made of Nordic folk tunes from the Danish String Quartet. “The students especially liked this music,” orchestra teacher Dr. Vanessa Salzman said of the unique arrangements of  Scandinavian songs.

Inspiring Musical Greatness The visit coincided with a chamber festival tour of the local community that the quartet – Kate Dreyfuss, Micaela Fruend Haimov (viola), Stephanie Liu (violins) and Phuc Phan (cello) – were participating in.

TOWN HALL MEETING AND TOUR - On December 27, Councilwoman Jane Bonner (back row, left) welcomed Girl Scouts from Troop 2775 in Miller Place to Town Hall. Councilmember Bonner said, “I really enjoyed my meeting with the Girl Scouts at Town Hall. They were so enthusiastic to learn more about how government works, INSPIRING MUSICAL GREATNESS - The Three Village Chamber Players perform and I was happy to spend the time talking with them. Possible topics include but are not limited to counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry, including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and interpreting graphs and tables. In addition, some questions involve linear or quadratic functions and equations, coordinate geometry, and other topics traditionally covered in a beginning algebra course.

Food Drives Help A Record Number Of Families

Supervisor Ed Romaine has announced that the Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE Program’s 2019 Holiday Toy Drive and Thanksgiving Food Drive helped a record number of families in 2019. The Toy Drive provided toys for 1,416 families in need and a total of 8,008 children. The Thanksgiving Food Drive provided hearty meals to 1,165 families in need and a total of 5,242 residents. Both are recordbreaking numbers for the two programs. In addition to the families served, the Youth Bureau also donated food to several churches and food pantries within Brookhaven Town. Supervisor Romaine

said, “I want to thank everyone who generously donated to the INTERFACE Toy Drive and Thanksgiving Food Drive. These programs are successful because of the thousands of kind-hearted residents and community minded businesses in Brookhaven Town. I also want to thank the Brookhaven Youth Bureau for working tirelessly throughout the year to help our residents in need.” Councilman Michael Loguercio, the Town Board Liaison to the Youth Bureau, said, “Once again, Brookhaven residents and businesses have risen to the challenge of helping those in need. This effort goes beyond toys and

food. It lets residents know there are people in the community who care about them during difficult times. I thank the Youth Bureau for its efforts and for making a difference in Brookhaven Town.” INTERFACE is a partnership between individuals, good corporate neighbors and the Town of Brookhaven united in a common effort to provide help to Brookhaven’s less fortunate residents. It provides goods and services to those in need and addresses social issues. For more information about the INTERFACE Program and Brookhaven Youth Bureau, please call 631-451-8011 or logon to brookhavenny.gov.

The New York Landmarks Conservancy has announced 22 Sacred Sites Grants totaling $316,000 awarded to historic religious properties throughout New York State, including $3,500 to Mt. Sinai Congregational Church in Brookhaven, New York to help fund a conditions report. The New York Landmarks Conservancy’s Long Island Sacred Sites grants are made possible with generous support from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation. The wood frame, three by five bay, two story, gable fronted meeting house, with painted wood shingle siding, was constructed in 1807 by builder Thomas Baylis. The steeple was important to sailors in Long Island Sound as a navigation aid. Through activities such as a food pantry, 12-step meetings, scout troops, and yoga classes,

the congregation reaches 1,900 people a year. “We are very pleased to be able to assist another diverse group of religious institutions,” said Peg Breen, President, The New York Landmarks Conservancy. “Aside from architectural merit, each one is an important community anchor.” The Sacred Sites Program provides congregations with matching grants for planning and implementing exterior restoration projects, technical assistance, and workshops. Since 1986, the program has pledged over 1,493 grants totaling more than $11.1 million to almost 805 religious institutions statewide. Mt. Sinai Congregational Church Receives Sacred Sites Grant City’s architectural legacy for more than 45 years. Since its founding, the Conservancy has loaned and granted more than $52 million, which has leveraged more than $1 billion in 1,550 restoration projects throughout New York, revitalizing communities, providing economic stimulus and supporting local jobs. The Conservancy has also offered countless hours of pro bono technical advice to building owners, both nonprofit organizations and individuals. The Conservancy’s work has saved more than a thousand buildings across the City and State, protecting New York’s distinctive architectural heritage for residents and visitors alike today, and for future generations. ALUMNUS VISITS THIRD GRADERS - Amy Castaldo’s third grade class at Port Jefferson’s Edna Louise Spear Elementary School welcomed Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Class of 2018 graduate Ben Zaltsman who shared a Hanukkah celebration with them. Ben taught the students how to play the traditional game of dreidel after a lesson on its history and meaning of the letters on the four sides of the spinning top. The visit was extra special for student Dean Zaltsman as he welcomed his older brother home for the holidays from Texas, where he is a student at Rice University. crowd favorites on their brass instruments. “We are so grateful for this real-world opportunity for our students, to use a public platform to share in the gift of music,” Rocky Point High School Principal Jonathan Hart said. “We also thank Mr. Ragona for leading and sharing in this memorable event.”
