At LIHSA, college prep is serious business and students put a lot of work into it. They are guided through the process stepby-step by their program directors, guidance counselors and teachers, who help them with everything from college applications and essays, to portfolio reviews and prescreening of performance recordings.

Once all the applications have been submitted, the process of individualized

scholarship searches begins.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for our students,” Ms. Stencel said of the Fair. “They are able to network with colleges on their home turf, allowing the representatives to see where they perfect their craft. It can be overwhelming at first, but our artists rose to the challenge. Student response was fantastic they really impressed the representatives.”

College Fair Success

Representatives from 26 colleges and universities across the country recently visited Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) and

were impressed with what they saw. More than 100 teen artists met with the reps at this year’s College Fair, making a profoundly positive first impression.

“After the event,

a number of college representatives called and emailed saying how impressed they were by our students’ talent and professionalism,” explained LIHSA

Guidance Counselor Melissa Stencel. “They were equally impressed by how well prepared the students were for the college application process.”

Among the colleges represented were Boston University, Penn State, New York University, Wagner College, Montclair State University, James Madison, Hofstra University, PACE, the Fashion Institute of Technology and several SUNY schools.

“Hosting the annual College Fair provides our students with an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the programs of more than 25 colleges, universities and conservatories,” said Jack Lenson, Interim Principal of LIHSA. “This

The guests have gone. The last of the leftovers have been eaten. Presents have been tried on, shown off, returned; in some cases, re-gifted. The decorations have been packed away for another year. The holiday season, which we look forward to each year with such eager anticipation… gone in a matter of days.

I’m experiencing a little holiday withdrawal myself.

There is something about taking down the Christmas tree, unplugging the lights one last time and surveying a now barren-looking home that just feels… well, depressing is what it feels.

Downright melancholy, in fact. Gone is the sparkle of the season.

Apologies to those with birthdays and other similarly cheery milestones in the month of January, but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, it seems that nothing particularly exciting occurs until the groundhog makes his scheduled appearance on February 2nd – and that, only in the case of his shadow being absent, signaling the coming of spring.

Not that we should be complaining about the winter weather we’ve been having up to this point. A light dusting of snow once, temperatures hovering above normal for much of the last several months – we have been quite fortunate compared to the last several winters. Unless you favor the four-hour commute home

on Long Island’s slippery roadways with hundreds of your fellow drivers, the backbreaking shoveling and the bone chilling frost, we are holding up quite well thus far.

Sure January is the month of new beginnings and attempts to overhaul our lives. What better time to get those finances in order, shred old documents, do some deep cleaning around the house? Of course, none of these things evokes quite the same sense of excitement as celebrations with family and friends, productive though they may be.

Such is January. Such is winter. Such is life. As Billy Joel sang, “It’s either sadness or euphoria.” Rarely anything in between.

Port Jefferson’s role in the American Revolution was brought to life during an assembly at Port Jefferson Middle School on December 22nd.

During the event, seventh-graders listened as Port Jefferson Village Mayor Margot Garant and Historian Georgette Grier-

Key presented an 18thcentury letter confirming Port Jefferson’s role in the Culper Spy Ring, which carried secret messages written in invisible ink to Gen. George Washington.

Students also watched a short video outlining the significance of the historical document,

which was written by a suspected British spy four years after colonists declared independence from Great Britain.

The program was a complement to the grade level’s curriculum, which is currently focused on the Revolution in history classes.

As part of an interdisciplinary lesson, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students used an ancient Japanese gyotaku printmaking technique to create impressions of fish

while also learning about the external anatomy of this marine life.

The students, who are in Jonathan Maletta’s marine science class and Carrie Morgan’s art course, spent

three-days on the lesson where their science unit was reinforced as they used washed fish carcasses, sumi ink and rice paper to make the life-size fish impressions.

Cosmetology students from Eastern Suffolk BOCES and the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology in Riverhead and Oakdale held An Afternoon of Beauty offering special salon services for a $5 donation and a non-perishable food item. Proceeds benefitted St. John’s Nepomucene in Oakdale, the Long Island Council of Churches, and New Beginnings Brendan House in Riverhead.

Over 300 members of the community came for manicures, paraffin wax hand treatments, haircuts, blow-outs, and styling. The event raised over $1,500 and over 450 lbs. of food was donated.

Constance Borny of Riverhead said she saw the event listed in her local newspaper and decided to come down for a haircut.

“The students were very nice. They showed off the skills they are learning.

I enjoyed the experience especially knowing that my donation was going to a good cause.”

Cosmetology Teacher Carolyn McKillop said, “It’s a win-win situation for the students and the community. The students have the opportunity to display their talents, practice their skills and customer relations, and it is good will to the community.”

Giving Thanks Minnesauke Elementary School fourth-graders in Kara Gorski’s class recently completed a community service project aimed at giving back to those in the community who dedicated their lives in service to the

country.

During their traditional holiday party, the class embraced the spirit of giving and created care packages for local veterans.

The packages consisted of toiletry items, such as

soap, shampoo and dental care items, as well as wash cloths and combs.

The completed packages were delivered to the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook.

During the visit, the students received a detailed history of the Garden and explanation of the work of the organization. They also had the chance to tour the Rangers’ and Knicks’ locker rooms, the VIP suites and the famous

Chase Bridge.

The visit inspired students to think critically about the implementation of successful sports and entertainment marketing techniques, as well as business ownership.

Saluting Our Heroes Mrs. Shaw’s second grade class in Miller Place School District’s Andrew Muller Primary School recently opened its doors to United States military veterans to thank them for their service.

After the students and military veterans began the

day by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, the class’s special guests then taught the students about the importance of respecting the flag as a symbol of America and the freedoms they enjoy daily. The second grade students and military veterans then read

“Veterans Day,” by Jessica Hawkins, before each child shared a specific freedom he or she felt fortunate to have and explained why.

At the end of the day, the students presented the military veterans with letters of appreciation and then saluted the heroes.

Rocky Point High School senior Christofer Casswell has been named an Army ROTC scholarship recipient and is one of only three Long Island students to earn the program’s fouryear scholarship so far this

Christofer will be joining the ROTC program at Providence College next fall, where he plans to major in Political Science.

Minnesauke Elementary School’s STARS character education program recently earned national recognition, as it was named a 2015 United Against Bullying Grant winner in a contest organized by Safe Fleet and its subsidiaries.

As a winning school, the building was presented with an anti-bullying

kit, student prizes and a $1,000 grant to be used to further develop and expand Minnesauke’s anti-bullying initiatives. The school’s program works to promote and celebrate the positive behaviors and character traits that students exhibit.

Minnesauke school social worker and Positive, Behavioral, Intervention and Supports (PBIS)

committee member Leia Woodruff applied for the grant. The school staff intends to use the funds to develop events and a reward system aimed at encouraging students’ positive behavior on the school bus, as well as a school bus driver training to prevent incidents of bullying on board the school bus.

Career Internship Special Career Education students in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Health Related Occupations (HRO) Program at Islip Career Center in Oakdale are involved in an internship at the Hilton Garden Inn in Ronkonkoma. They were invited by General Manager Ross Harrison.

The internship opportunity at the Hilton Garden Inn is a crosstraining experience for the students.

HRO Teacher Deirdre Kroupa said, “In the first year of the HRO program, the students are learning how to become professionals and learning

the specific skills to work in various areas of a hospital; they are not necessarily working with patients.”

The internship at the Hilton Garden Inn mirrors the learning experience in a hospital environment, except there are no patients; rather there are guests who need attention and service.

Each student does a six-week rotation which includes working in the laundry, housekeeping, kitchen, dietary, bussing tables, waitressing, front desk, and environmental services.

Kroupa said, “The hotel has allowed the students to decorate the front lobby

which is part of recreation activities, much like the students would do in a hospital environment.”

Amanda, a student from Central Islip UFSD, likes working in the kitchen.

She said, “I especially like the part of doing the dishes. It’s fast paced and it keeps me busy.”

This year, ESBOCES is partnering with students from the Brentwood UFSD.
