Snowed In Last week’s column was entitled Coming Out of the Cold; this week, Snowed In. Sensing a theme here?

January has always been my least favorite month.

Apologies to those with birthdays and other assorted milestones which fall within this 31 day period; but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, I find nothing particularly exciting about it.

For those who love snow, sure, there’s the potential for a few substantial blizzards to blow our way. But mostly, it’s a month that begins with the daunting process of undecking the halls and ends with faint hopes of a furry critter crawling out of a hole to determine just how much more cold weather we’ve yet to endure until spring beckons. Of course, let’s not forget the seemingly endless parade of holiday bills piling

up in the mailbox as we speak, as the horrifying realization of just how much we spent the previous month begins to set in. Joyful.

But, as with anything, January is something we must contend with, for better or worse. And so, we attempt to make the best of it by cooking up big pots of chili, baking cookies and settling in with our fuzzy slippers and pajamas as we once again pick up that book we’ve been meaning to finish since we started it back on the beach sometime in July. There are the movies we never got around to seeing in theaters that have since found their way to our cable channels, maybe a Netflix series or two to binge watch, even – dare we say it – some long overdue cleaning out of the closets. {But not the dreaded Christmas Closet. No, January is not a long enough

month for such a daunting task.} Thrilling? Perhaps not. But let’s face it – these are the activities we are all the more unlikely to touch as the year wears on, as the snowflakes melt away and reveal the beginning buds and blossoms we so look forward to come spring. And, if you do happen to revel in the cold, blustery weather, this is your time.

Brave the elements, take a hike, build a snowman . . . the white stuff won’t last forever.

Resolutions, abstract goals – whatever form your inspiration takes in 2018 – are best served by consistency, by constant reevaluation and modification, if needed.

January is just as important a month as any to not lose sight of the bigger picture even if it is a bit clouded by the frosted windowpane at the moment.

LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

Providing Hope Beyond the Food ... this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This organization was founded in 1992 by Sister Elaine when she received a vision from God to “Share the Gospel of Jesus and Feed the Poor.” From there, she humbly took to the streets of Long Island with 10 bologna and cheese sandwiches and did just that.

Lighthouse Mission currently reaches 2,000 people per week with the same mission: sharing the Gospel of Jesus and feeding the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is now the president of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.

After recently meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved. I felt excitement for all they are doing and experienced such a renewed sense of hope. They are truly set apart from many other organizations because they purposefully accomplish much more than just feeding the hungry.

Lighthouse Mission operates a Food Outreach as well as a Youth Outreach.

Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays (in Coram and Ronkonkoma), Wednesdays (in Central Islip), Thursdays (in Shirley and Port Jefferson Station), Fridays (in Riverhead and Centereach) and Saturdays (in Patchogue and Bellport).

Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, they chose to go mobile and travel to different locales where those in need can line up and receive plenty of nutritional food, gentlyused clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the

event. While I was speaking with Pastor Jim Ryan, he mentioned the inspiration behind being mobile. He explained, “Jesus didn’t make others come to Him to be helped, He went to them…that is why we operate in a mobile manner!”

Lighthouse Mission’s Youth Outreach operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students and, on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this service for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. Week after week, many youth on Long Island gather for these events and enjoy a wonderful time together; for many children, the meal they receive at an event will be their only meal of the day.

There is an overwhelming amount of people on Long Island who are in need, not only physically, but emotionally as well. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that truly cares for those they serve. They operate 100% on donations, receiving no government help.

If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so! They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are specifically in need of winter coat donations.

As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. All ages are welcome to volunteer! Wrapping Up Kindess Students of the Port Jefferson School District take part in many charitable endeavors throughout the year and the winter holiday season is no exception.

After engaging in Thanksgiving charitable giving drives, students were back in action in early December with lists of specific gifts for local children, organizing bake sales and other fundraisers.

The students volunteered during their lunch periods and after school to assemble care packages, using their artistic skills to

wrap presents and ready them for delivery to bring joy to local children.

At Edna Louise Spear Elementary School, under the leadership of guidance counselor Jessica Peterson, staff, students and parents collected toys and other items and worked along with members of the Port Jefferson Library and the First United Methodist Church of Port Jefferson to ensure a happy holiday for 18 Port Jefferson children.

They credit the high school student organization for donating

gifts for three of the children.

The Port Jefferson Middle School National Junior Honor Society, along with adviser and teacher Philip Giannusa held a festive wrapping event. They and the members of the student council and adviser Allison Giannusa purchased gifts with money they raised from bake sales and also donated gift cards to local families in need.

Their efforts benefited local children and their packages were delivered to the families just before the

holidays.

For more than a decade, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School has partnered with the Rotary Club of Port Jefferson, whose members fundraise throughout the year to purchase toys and clothing for a local

charity. They then bring the hundreds of items to the high school where they are sorted, labeled and organized by members of the school’s Interact Club under the direction of adviser Deirdre Filippi.

“It’s a nice feeling to be

a part of a community that cares so much about each other,” said student Billy Scannel, as he wrapped gifts one day after school with fellow students, Rotary members and school administrators.

Three Village Central School District’s R.C. Murphy Junior High School’s National Junior Art Honor Society members lent their artistic skills to a worthy cause this winter as they designed shopping bags for a food pantry for the holidays.

After discussing the importance of food pantries and the need to donate to them throughout the year, the students worked under the direction of adviser Lisa Cappiello to transform recycled paper bags into unique designs.

The completed bags were delivered to an East Northport food pantry just before the December holidays.

Delivering Holiday Cheer The stages, classrooms and hallways of the Port Jefferson School District were filled with the melodies and rhythms of music at the most festive time of year.

under the leadership of Michael Caravello, director of music and fine arts, and music teachers Edward Pisano and Katherine Butera, entertained the board of education and community members with select seasonal songs at the December meeting. The board honored them with certificates for spreading holiday cheer in the community.

Jump Rope for a Cause Nassakeag Elementary School students in the Three Village Central School District recently showcased their jump roping skills as they took part in the school’s second annual Jump Rope Contest.

The contest was a

culmination of a jump rope unit taught in physical education class, that was also a fundraiser for the American Heart Association. In order to qualify for the schoolwide event, fourth- through sixth-grade students

had to jump rope for a minimum of three minutes continuously.

After starting the contest with 63 qualifiers, fifthgrader Jordan Zezelic outlasted everyone by jumping for 11 minutes and 32 seconds.

Telling the Tale Rocky Point School District’s Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School’s fifth-grade select chorus High Notes helped to set the holiday spirit when they performed “The Lights of Jingle Bell Hill” during two daytime and

one evening performance just before the December break.

The students rehearsed under the leadership of director Craig Knapp to bring the story of how an annual holiday contest that historically has gone

wrong suddenly goes perfectly well. The students each portrayed a series of comedic characters – including Santa’s reindeer, elves and many others as they delivered their lines flawlessly and sang perfectly in tune.

Interface Coat Drive

Competing for a Cause Rocky Point Middle School seventh-grade students in Greg Havranek’s eighth-period class recently won a school BoxTops for Education drive – collecting more than 1,000 BoxTops.

The school has been collecting BoxTops – small

squares located on certain everyday products – since September. The BoxTops are then returned to the company in exchange for special funding for the school. These funds can then be used in ways to improve the building. In the past, the middle school

has used BoxTops funds to support the arcade room in the cafeteria and the garden in the courtyard.

As the winning class, Mr. Havranek’s students received a special treat from Wendy’s.

Supervisor Ed Romaine has announced that the Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau will hold its Annual Interface Coat Drive from January 12th to February 12th to help residents in need stay warm this winter. Donations of new or gently used clean coats, scarves, hats and gloves in infant to adult sizes can be dropped off at the following locations: • Brookhaven Town Hall, One Independence Hill,

Farmingville • Brookhaven Highway Department, 1140 Old Town Road, Coram • Henrietta Acampora Recreation Center, 39 Montauk Highway, Blue Point • New Village Recreation Center, 20 Wireless Road, Centereach • Rose Caracappa Senior Center, 739 Route 25A, Mount Sinai
