The Marines live by the motto of never leaving anyone behind. For some that includes a dog they have rescued during deployment, and have bonded with. The loyalty from Captain Dave and his unit and the dog that they rescued goes both ways, and now his wish is to bring her back home to the United States with him when he returns soon. Guardians of Rescue have helped other military members pull off this same mission, and they are seeking public donations to help pull it off again.

to Sox is like no other, and he believes in the idea of not leaving her behind,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We know that we can help bring Sox back to America to live out her life with him, but we need the public’s support, because it’s costly to do. We are grateful to be working with Nowzad shelter in Kabul, because without their assistance this pup would not have a chance of coming to America.”

is scheduled to come back home to the United States in early 2020. He can’t imagine leaving Sox behind because he loves her. He first saw Sox when she was a puppy, finding her caught in concertina wire in their camp. He freed her, gave her food and water, and sent her on her way. However, Sox had different plans.

In the days that followed, Sox started coming back to their camp each day, feeling safe around the unit and seeking food and water. Some of the other men had even seen the dog being abused out on the streets. Soon, Sox began staying by their side all of the time, even tagging along on some of their missions. On a recent patrol, Sox ventured too far away from the unit and was whipped with a stick by a local. It was at that time that Captain Dave knew he could never leave her behind to fend for herself.

“The bond I have with Sox is something I didn’t expect, but I just can’t leave her behind,” says Captain Dave. “If I don’t bring her home with me I am afraid I’ll always regret it and wonder about what happened to her. I appreciate any assistance people can give in helping me to bring her home with me.”

Relocating a dog from the Middle East to America can be done, but it comes at a high cost. Winter Break Workshops!

Two Winter Break Workshops will be offered at Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Educational & Cultural Center with acclaimed puppeteer and artist Liz Joyce from Goat on a Boat and musician and storyteller Johnny Cuomo.

Both events will be held February 18 through 20 from 10 am to 11:30 am.

From shadow puppets to moving mouth puppets, artist Liz Joyce from “Goat on a Boat” fame will guide children from 6 to 11 year olds in creating a Puppet Theatre and Puppet Making Workshops. Their

creations will be used to tell jokes, create short vignettes and also videos. It will be held on the 1st floor of the Cultural Center. The cost for this workshop is $100 pp for all three days and there is a 10 person minimum, 15 maximum.

Music Mornings with Johnny Cuomo offers songs, stories, and movement set to music with activities to celebrate winter. The cost for all three days is $85 pp with a 15 person minimum, 20 maximum. This program is for children 3 to 5 years old of all abilities accompanied

by a caregiver and will be held on the 2nd floor of the Cultural Center.

Individual day pricing is available for both programs. All proceeds go to benefit WMHO’s mission to protect, preserve and interpret its historic and environmentally sensitive properties and to offer future education programming.

LOGUERCIO WELCOMES SANTA CLAUS - Recently, children of all ages came to meet jolly Saint Nick during the Town’s annual “Santa Comes to Longwood Estate” celebration. This fun-filled, family event included sleigh rides and pony rides, hot chocolate, roasted chestnuts, popcorn and a visit with Santa and his “Chief Elf,” Councilman Loguercio (left). Guests also enjoyed the “winter wonderland” inspired model train display with a spectacular Disney World feature for all to enjoy. Councilman Loguercio said, “This was a beautiful day filled with fun and the holiday spirit. Thank you to the Town of Brookhaven Parks Department for all their hard work to make this a magical day for so many children and their families. Spreading Holiday Cheer The Port Jefferson Board of Education’s December meeting was filled with the sounds of the season as student-musicians performed several holiday classics before being recognized for their contributions to the school and community during the holiday season.

Leading up to the winter holidays, students participated in community events, including the Port Jefferson Village’s annual

Dicken’s Festival, performing at local churches and the public library in addition to their winter concert at the high school.

Dr. Michael Caravello, director of music and fine arts, introduced music teachers Maria Diaz and Edward Pisano and students Katherine Ambrozy, Grace Crugnale, Cole Fortier, Katherine Kirsch, Mattea Rabeno, Jack Reilly, Hannah Skula and Peggy

Yin, who were each presented with a certificate of appreciation for their musical efforts.

“One of the core missions of our department is going out in the community and spreading music and art because that is what real artists and musicians do, they give back to their community,” said Dr. Caravello. “Our students really bring that mission to life.”

Cold Water, Warm Hearts With a goal of raising $9,500 for the Special Olympics, the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s Varsity Club has raised to date more than $11,100 as part of the Town of Brookhaven’s annual Polar Plunge recently held at Cedar Beach in Mt. Sinai.

The fundraising record goes hand in hand with

the record number of 68 students who signed up to take part in the plunge, along with co-advisers Jesse Rosen and Deirdre Filippi.

“We can’t even begin to express how proud we are of the Varsity Club members who took the chilly plunge,” Filippi said. “With our incredible donation, we were able to

sponsor 27 athletes for an entire year!”

The Varsity Club members annually engage in projects centered around athletics and work to help others while challenging themselves in the process.

They also run schoolorganized events and activities that help to raise money for various serviceminded organizations.

Annual Blizzard Bags Project

Members of the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Leo Club recently completed their annual Blizzard Bags project for the Three Village Meals on Wheels program.

Their thoughtful project started with fundraising bake sales in the school, shopping for all the food items and assembling the bags for delivery to the organization, which then delivered the packages to the senior citizens who receive Meals on Wheels

services. Each Blizzard Bag contained four shelfstable boxed or canned meals for seniors to have in their home to use when their daily Meals on Wheels delivery is canceled due to poor winter weather.

Last week, an early winter snowstorm forced Meals on Wheels to cancel its regular meal delivery, but the recipients already had their Blizzard Bags in their homes.

“Our students have done this project for quite

a few years, and it was really special for them to be acknowledged with a note of kindness from the organization’s vice president during the first snowstorm of the season,” said technology teacher Brian Chalmers, who co-advises the club with school librarian Mary LaSita. “They learn to understand the impact of their dedication and efforts more fully.”

Portrait Unveiling And Street Dedication

On December 18, Councilwoman Valerie Cartright joined the family and friends of Tech. Sgt. Dashan Briggs for the honorary street dedication ceremony at the corner of Bedford Avenue and King Street in Port Jefferson Station. Tech Sgt. Briggs was killed with six other airmen when their HH60 Pave Hawk helicopter crashed in Western Iraq on March 15, 2018.

He was assigned to the 101st Rescue Squadron, 106th Rescue Wing, New York National Guard in Westhampton. Prior to the street dedication, a portrait unveiling ceremony was held at the Boyle Road Elementary School. The portrait, painted by student Ava Pearl, was installed which will follow Jayden,

and then Ava, in their careers in Comsewogue School District.

Earlier this year, Councilwoman Cartright presented to the Town’s Memorial Review Committee requesting the Honorary Street Name be added to King Street, Port Jefferson Station near the home of Tech. Sgt. Briggs’ widow, Rebecca, and two young children, Jayden and Ava. After approval by the Memorial Review Committee, Councilwoman Cartright presented a resolution to authorize the Honorary Street Name which was passed unanimously at the June 6, 2019 Town Board meeting. Councilwoman Cartright worked closely with family, New York National Guard, Comsewogue School District, and with

the help of the Highway Department to organize this event.

Councilwoman Cartright said, “It was my pleasure to sponsor the resolution to dedicate the Honorary Street Name ‘Tech. Sgt. Dashan J. Briggs.’ We want this sign to serve as a reminder to the community of this tremendous loss, but also of how fortunate we are to have the Briggs family in our community and our responsibility and commitment to continue to support them as they move forward. We hope this will be a daily special recognition for Mrs. Briggs and for their young children that will keep their father’s memory and legacy alive in their hearts and minds.”

DMV Urges New Yorkers To Prepare For Winter Driving Conditions start driving, here are some tips to follow: Before moving your car, be certain to remove all snow and ice from it including the top of the vehicle’s roof. Snow and ice flying off your car can cause driving distractions for you and other drivers.

It could hit and damage other vehicles or cause a crash.

Warm up the car so the defroster has a chance to clear the windows.

Turn on your headlights when you turn on your windshield wipers. New York State law makes this mandatory.

Do not exceed the speed limit and always adjust your speed to the road conditions.

Leave plenty of room between your vehicle and

the one ahead of you.

Don’t try to pass or weave in and out of traffic. Even if your vehicle has good traction in ice and snow, you must be prepared to react if other drivers start to slide.

Familiarize yourself with the vehicles you drive before you take them out in inclement weather.

Do not drive during ice or snow storms unless it is absolutely necessary.

When sleet, freezing rain or snow begin to fall, remember that bridges, ramps and overpasses will freeze first. Be aware that slippery spots may remain after snow is removed.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) joined today in offering tips to winterize your vehicle and to adjust to driving in more challenging weather conditions.
