Greg George, vice president of operations of Panera Bread, presents a check for $28,115 to members of Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition (HBCAC) and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, local breast cancer organizations, on December 17th. The money was raised during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month,

where a portion of the proceeds sold from its Pink Ribbon Bagels, shaped in the form of the iconic pink ribbon, went towards support of research, education and efforts to raise awareness for the cause. Gilda’s Club New York City and Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program were also

recipients of funds raised at 36 participating locations in Brooklyn, Long Island, Queens and Staten Island owned and operated by Doherty Enterprises. In total, 44,790 bagels were sold, providing Long Island charities with a donation of $25,335 and $2,780 to Gilda’s Club New York City.

Top Leaders Each year, Catholic Health Services (CHS) seeks nominations from its staff for the Patrick J. Scollard Award for Leadership. This year’s winner of CHS’s highest honor is Richard C. Bie, licensed professional engineer and assistant vice president, plant engineering for Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, West Islip. Chosen from among colleagues across CHS, he was recognized at the system’s 11th annual leadership conference, held at the DeMatteis Center in Greenvale. “Richard’s commitment to Catholic Health Service’s mission is apparent in both word and deed,” said CHS President and Chief Executive Officer Alan D. Guerci, MD. “He is dedicated to assuring that those who seek care are provided the best possible environment.” Bie has spent the better part of his career applying his unique skills and talents to the health care industry, including the last five years with Good Samaritan.There, he implemented energy efficiency processes throughout the hospital such as operational changes to shut off equipment during unoccupied hours, a house-wide steam trap maintenance and repair program, expansion of a central chilled water distribution system, and replacement of older lighting within the main hospital and off-sites with newer, more efficient LED lighting. Also, he collaborates with others throughout the facility in planning for and addressing complex challenges to improve results, leading to significant cost savings, simpler processes and quicker response times. Bie lives in Hauppauge with his wife Suzanne, and

their three children Jennifer, Jimmy and Kevin. One of the two leading finalists for the Patrick J. Scollard Award is Antoinette Jordan, RN, from St. Francis Hospital, the Heart Center®, Flower Hill. She is the nurse manager of the hospital’s intensive care unit. Jordan supports nurse hand-off communication at the bedside, fostering patient and family education and has worked hard to establish a culture of safety. In addition to her leadership skills, Jordan’s clinical achievements are notable. Under her guidance, her unit achieved the Gold Level Beacon Award in Critical Care

to families in Jamaica, West Indies who cannot afford health care, she traveled there to lend nursing expertise and to live the CHS mission to “advocate for the poor and underserved.” Jordan lives in Hempstead with her husband, Denroy Morris. The other leading finalist for this notable honor is New Hyde Park resident Mary Ellen Conrad, director of the Nassau Day Programs and Supported Housing, from Maryhaven Center of Hope, Port Jefferson. For more than 30 years, she has been a proponent of the CHS mission, developing, implementing and sustaining one of the largest mental health service delivery systems in Nassau County. Her career began when there was little funding to operate programs, so she had to creatively staff and run with both quality and efficiency. Having identified a need for residences for those with a mental health diagnosis as well as an intellectual or developmental disability, she presented the idea to administration. The Key To Keeping Resolutions New Year’s resolutions provide a perfect opportunity to set positive goals for the year to come. Old habits can be hard to break, which can make it difficult for men and women to stay committed to their New Year’s resolutions. But a new year marks a new chapter, and the following are some ways you can ensure this year’s resolutions don’t go unresolved. • Be specific. A resolution that’s too general may ultimately prove ineffective. For

example, if you resolve to lose weight this year, you probably hope to lose a substantial amount of weight over the next 12 months, as opposed to just one or two pounds. If you set specific and periodic goals, such as lose one to two pounds by the end of January, as part of your resolution, then you are building in some measuring sticks along the way, and meeting those measuring sticks can motivate you to stay on course and realize your resolution by year’s end.

• Don’t go overboard. If you traditionally find resolutions hard to live up to, then stick to a single resolution this year. This allows you to focus your efforts more effectively and ensures you won’t be overburdened, which could negatively impact your ability to realize your resolutions. • Use technology. Saving more money is a popular New Year’s resolution, and now men and women looking to save more can employ technology to help them realize their financial

goals. If your goal for the coming year is to save ‘X’ amount of dollars, sit down and calculate how much you need to save each pay period to realize that goal. You can then have that figure automatically deposited into an interest-bearing savings account each time your paycheck is deposited into your account. • Enlist a friend. If your New Year’s resolution is one that others can apply to their own lives, then by all means enlist a friend. For example, men and

women who want to find more time to exercise in the coming year can enlist a friend or family member to exercise with them. The buddy system is a great motivating tool, and enlisting the help of a friend or family member provides the added benefit of seeing that loved one more often in the year ahead. • Don’t let setbacks derail your resolution. Resolutions too often fall by the wayside when men and women experience setbacks directly related to their resolutions. If

you resolved to save more money but had a month when that simply was not possible, don’t allow that to derail your resolution for the rest of the year. Setbacks are nearly inevitable, but they’re never an excuse to give up on a resolution. Say A Good Word Consider carefully before you say a hard word to a man, but never let a chance to say a good one go by. Praise judiciously bestowed is money invested. George Horace Lorimer

Christmas celebrants realize that the holiday season does not end on December 26th or even January 2nd. For many people, Christmas and New Year’s Eve are merely a prelude to the real celebration to come on Three Kings Day. Three Kings Day, or Día de los Très Reyes, is celebrated on January 6th to honor the wise men who visited and brought gifts to Jesus Christ. Also known as the Epiphany, the holiday marks the end of the Christmas season for many practicing Christians. Very little is known about the kings, or magi. These kings, who are only mentioned once in the Gospel of Matthew, are never named. The story says they hail from the “east” and are guided to the manger by a mysterious light in the sky. They begin a journey to bring gold, frankincense and myrrh

to the newborn king. Unbeknownst to many, the popular song “The 12 Days of Christmas” actually marks the 12 days following Christmas, ending on the Feast of the Epiphany, and not the 12 days preceding Christmas Day. Many traditions are associated with the Epiphany. Celebrants in Mexico serve Rosca de Reyes, an oval-shaped cake that symbolizes a crown. The cake has a small doll inside that represents baby Jesus and the hiding of Jesus from King Herod’s troops. Herod ordered his soldiers to seek out and murder all male infants born in Bethlehem in retaliation of the prophecy that a messiah would come and become the new King of Jerusalem. Aside from the pleasure of each other’s company, of course… I asked for a combination DVD/VCR player – one of those retro, bordering-onobsolete creations that I personally feel should be a staple of every household. How else can you view all those old home movies and classic Disney videos? And, in my case, about 20 years’

worth of dance recital recordings… Add to that the fact that, given the option, I would much rather watch a DVD movie rental on a ﬂat screen TV as opposed to my computer monitor. Sure, I realize most people stream media on their laptops nowadays; but I’m not most people, and I would like to have the option of viewing movies on something larger than a smartphone. Hence, my request for this outdated piece of machinery, the gift

that keeps on giving, allowing us the pleasure of reliving those timeless memories on a larger scale. Priceless, if you ask me. So once the winter weather settles in and hibernation starts looking awfully appealing, I plan to fire up the old (new) machine and have myself a minimarathon of movies, TV series I’ve been meaning to catch up on – and of course those classic dance routines. Regular exercise can boost the body’s immune system and help it to fend off foreign invaders, including the cold virus. A recent study found that taking vitamin C in addition to daily exercise can reduce your risk of cold and cut the duration of the cold should you get one. Before taking any supplements, speak with your doctor to make sure they won’t interact negatively with other medications. • Recognize that antibiotics are not the answer. Antibiotics are only effective at treating bacterial infections, not viruses, which means they are ineffective at fighting the cold virus. • If you do get sick, play it smart. Should you succumb to a cold in spite of your best efforts, steer clear of others so you are not spreading the virus. Rest and fuel your body with healthy foods and beverages. There’s no need to visit a doctor for a cold unless you have a fever after several days of being sick. Colds normally last between seven and 10 days. If your symptoms do not improve or if they seem to be worsening, visit your doctor.

Participants in the Coney Island Polar Bear Club’s ninth annual Coney Island Polar Dip will plunge into the frigid Atlantic Ocean on New Year’s Day to raise money to send more New York families to Camp Sunshine. The January 1st fundraising event will test the mettle of participants who must dip into nearfreezing ocean waters at Riegelmann Boardwalk in historic Coney Island in Brooklyn. Registration begins at 10 a.m. with plunges beginning at 1 p.m. Camp Sunshine is a oneof-a-kind national retreat in Maine for children with life-threatening illnesses

and their families. The Coney Island Polar Dip is partnering with TeamRaiser, a popular online fundraising platform, to make it easier to fundraise. Since the opening of the Camp’s year-round campus in 2001, more ill children and their families have come from New York than any other state in the nation. In 2013, 152 families from New York attended the Camp. Even with multiple sessions being added annually at Camp Sunshine, there are still

many more children from New York being newly diagnosed each year, Smith said.
