At the Nov. 18 meeting of the Sachem Central School District Board of Education, three exceptional students were honored for their recent achievement of being named as semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Sachem High School North seniors Nishta Boghra and Mili Das and Sachem High School East senior Natalie Machado were recognized with certificates of achievement from the district and shared information about their academic interests.

In addition, Sachem High School North senior Cameron Lee was sworn in to serve as a student member of the Sachem Central School District Board of Education. Sachem High School East senior Mackenzie Szlosek will be sworn in at a later meeting.

Since its inception, the library has held many community service classes in this dedicated space.

Teens have knitted hats for preemies, created cards for hospitalized kids and veterans, learned about cybersecurity, protecting the environment, the caring of pets, and so much more. Many of the finished projects have gone to local hospitals, animal shelters, or veteran facilities.

Through the hard work and dedication of Teen Coordinator Angela Breslin, teens are offered various programs and tasks to earn community service. The Teen Advisory Board, which began in March 2015, encourages applicants to apply to work on projects, volunteer at library events, and earn community service

credits. Their dedication, creativity, and interest are welcome, with applications accepted every September.

Teens seeking community service hours can also visit the Learning Commons and earn 1 (one) hour of community service per week. Upon completing the assigned task located in the Drop-In Community Service basket, teens will be given a community service certificate to verify that the task was completed correctly.

There are many opportunities to earn Community Service hours from home. Teens may choose a book from our extensive teen collection to read and review. Be a reader, reviewer, and critic while earning credit.

Reviews will be assembled in a binder and online as a reader’s advisory guide to aid other teen readers. The Mutt-i-grees® Community

Service Program is an “exciting initiative that builds on children’s and teen’s affinity for animals and highlights the unique characteristics and desirability of shelter pets. We hope to do this by encouraging teens to participate in projects that will promote awareness about shelter animals and increase their quality of life while in a shelter environment.” Teens may choose up to three tasks per month to earn community service credit.

These projects can be worked on at home, returned to the Learning Commons Services Desk.

We invite teens to participate in our newest community service initiative, “Letters to Veterans Program.”

Showing our gratitude to local veterans who have bravely served our country honors their commitment

and sacrifice. No matter when they served, it is never too late to recognize their spirit and endurance.

Let them know, especially during these extraordinary times, that they are not forgotten. You must write 5 (five) thoughtful letters and return them to the Learning Commons to receive 1 (one) hour of community service credit.

You can do this once a week through March 13, 2021. A flyer is available on our website with further instructions.

“There’s a famous quote, ‘If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.’ It’s so true for me as I find great joy in developing easy, flavorful recipes,” says Cindy Gilbert, McCormick Test Kitchen chef. “My friends have come to me for years requesting tips and tricks, and over 20 years ago, they anointed me the annual holiday cookie exchange leader. This past year has been challenging, but I knew I wanted to keep the tradition alive while following social distancing guidelines.”

Here are Gilbert’s top seven tips on hosting your own virtual cookie exchange, along with her favorite delicious McCormick cookie picks.

1. Keep the virtual guest list small and local. Your family and friends’ safety is the most important thing, and no one wants to bake a ton of cookies. Aim for five to 10 people.

Gingerbread Men Cookies – No winter holiday is complete without gingerbread men. They’re cute and can be decorated with raisins, cinnamon redhot candies or royal icing.

Invite cookie enthusiasts. Invite people who enjoy being in the kitchen and welcome

sharing their recipe secrets!

Tell them they’re going to be sharing the story behind their choice.

Red Velvet Crinkle Cookies – This tasty recipe crinkles from the confectioners’ sugar, and the deep chocolate red color and taste add up to a cookie you’ll be proud to share.

3. Package cookies in separate portions. Ask participants to package each serving in individual containers or resealable bags of six cookies per serving.

Easy Lemon Cookie Truffles – This is a perfect no-bake option. Lemon extract adds a bright citrus flavor to this easy fouringredient treat that starts with store-bought sugar cookies.

4. Arrange the exchange.

About an hour before the virtual get-together, set up a table outside, in a cul-desac or school parking lot.

Everyone can take turns grabbing their cookies quickly and safely. Or, arrange no contact porch drop-offs during a set time.

Holiday Meringue Cookies – These deliciously airy, light, and low-fat meringue cookies are the perfect confection for any holiday celebration. Add your favorite food coloring for a festive twist.

5. Request the recipes. Ask guests to provide a recipe card in their individual packages, or as the host, you can compile the recipes and share through email.

Double Ginger Gingersnaps – A personal favorite of Gilbert’s, these are a ginger lover’s dream! Ground ginger and crystallized ginger make the flavor pop on these cookies, which are crispy on the outside and chewy inside.

6. Share stories via video conference. Many guests like to tell the stories behind their cookies. By scheduling time to connect, you’ll likely hear some heartwarming or hilarious anecdotes and maybe even some helpful tidbits.

Blood Center (NYBC) to increase blood donations.

Temporary blood shortages are not uncommon during summer and winter holidays each year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created a chronic shortage across the country that shows no sign of improving. This reality is particularly dangerous given the looming uncertainty surrounding

the pandemic’s trajectory over the course of this winter.

New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients.

Prior to the pandemic, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations,

but nearly all high schools, colleges, offices and other community groups have had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19.

Blood donors can now make appointments to visit donor centers, but donations are at just 65% of pre-pandemic levels well below what is needed by hospitals and patients in our area.

“The entire foundation

of the way people donate blood has changed. The convenience factor of walking down the hallway while at work, getting out of class or donating after religious services is gone.

Instead, we have to rely on people taking the extra step of proactively seeking out a place to donate. So far, that isn’t happening at the level we need,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive

This Christmas Give the Gift of Saving a Soldiers Dog from being Abandoned Overseas, Time Is Running Out A soldier’s dog is in urgent need of rescue, or he could be left behind as his soldier is being deployed back to the U.S. from serving overseas.

Due to reduced flights and heighted requirements for animal travel there are just days left to make this rescue happen and keep this soldier and his dog together.

“The United States military does not leave best friends behind. We need your help to reunite them here in America,” explains Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War. “Even small donations will add up to help. We want to give Specialist Lucas the great Christmas present of bringing his dog back home with him.”

When soldiers are deployed they can get lonely, miss home, and become depressed. Every once in a while they are lucky enough to come across a stray animal that they befriend, which brings them happiness. That’s exactly what happened to Army Specialist Lucas, when he came across a dog that he’s now desperate to bring back to the U.S. with him now that his deployment is over.

“I noticed his calmness, he just wanted some love and attention. I love all animals but he was special,” says Specialist Lucas. “I can’t imagine having to leave my best friend behind, God only knows what will happen to him and my heart will be broken.”

The soldier saw the dog walking around, lonely and hungry, near the base where he is stationed.

As he considered how he could help, the dog made his way to him, wanting attention. Specialist Lucas decided to name him Boy Dawg, and they instantly made a connection. Each day, the dog would seek

him out for attention and food.

Over time, they created a bond that has helped Specialist Lucas during his time being deployed.

When he got word that he was going to be sent back home to the states, he couldn’t imagine leaving Boy Dawg behind to forage on his own again. By this point, he considered him part of his family. He reached out to Paws of War to see if they could help him bring his dog back home.

Paws of War has helped numerous soldiers to bring their pets back to the U.S. However, this year the mission is more challenging to pull off.

The pandemic has severely limited the number of flights coming from the U.S., especially those allowing dogs. Plus, flights from overseas are costly, and there is a lot of red tape that needs to be addressed and logistics to overcome.

The only way they can successfully bring Boy Dawg home with Specialist Lucas is with financial help from people in the community. They are urgently accepting donations so they can plan
