BABY AND ME - “Babies who learn sign language have the natural ability to express their needs and wants without crying.” On Tuesday, November 28th, Lisa Curley visited the Connetquot Public Library to teach Baby and Me Sign and Preschool Sign and Play. During Baby and Me Sign Lisa teaches basic signs for everyday as well as songs for signing, singing, and playing. During Preschool Sign and Play children learn additional signs, signing games, and even sign some songs as well. These classes are a valuable part of early education, a primary literacy resource and an excellent bonding experience for parent and child.

A Conversation The Global Institute at LIU hosted General (ret.) David Petraeus at Humanities Hall on the LIU Post campus for a conversation with the Institute’s Chairman, former Congressman Steve Israel. General Petraeus is a partner in the global investment firm KKR, chairman of the KKR Global Institute, a Judge Widney Professor at the University of Southern California, a member of the board of Optiv (a global cyber security solutions provider), and a personal venture capitalist. Congressman Israel began the program by discussing the critical role the Global Institute at LIU plays in the region. Congressman Israel explained the deep perspective he gained on global issues as a member of Congress because of the firsthand access he had to world leaders who could explain the complexities of different issues. He noted that when he left
Congress, he wanted to create a forum for our region to have access to that insight that proved so valuable to understand a complex world. “So we set up the Global Institute as a place to understand what is happening in the world and understand it not from whichever tribal media that you happen to watch or listen to, not from tweets and not from Facebook, but from the people who have been at the center of gravity of those challenges and the people who continue to be at the center of those challenges,” Congressman Israel said. General Petraeus spoke with Congressman Israel about the global conflicts that the United States has and continues to face in a lengthy Q&A, including threats from ISIS and North Korea. He noted that ISIS will remain a threat even after they cease occupying physical space because of the threat they pose in cyberspace,
and how we will need to adjust to that challenge. And while he laid bare the stark challenges we face as a nation and a world in light of those threats, he also made a point to discuss how optimistic he felt. “How can you not be optimistic, especially on a college campus on Long Island’s Gold Coast?” he asked. After taking many questions from an audience primarily composed of veterans and students, along with members of the community and political leaders, General Petraeus answered what he believed was the important unasked question of the night: What have we learned from the last 16 years of war since the events of September 11th, 2001. “I think there’s lessons,” he said. “And I think if you accept these, that the policy that falls out is actually very straightforward and this is also a lesson perhaps
for the students in here of why you want to get the overarching big ideas right up front. So, for example with the surge in Iraq, the surge that mattered most was not the addition of forces, but the surge of ideas. We changed all the ideas of what our strategy had been 180 degrees. For one example, securing the people was job one. And we recognized that you could not secure the people by doing what we were doing, which was consolidating them on big bases and getting out of the neighborhoods. We had to go back into the neighborhoods and we ended up establishing seventy-seven more locations.” That adaptability speaks to what Congressman Israel had mentioned in his introduction: that instead of focusing on “hardware,” he instead put resources into feeding the intellectual minds of the soldiers and worked on changing hearts and minds on the ground.
Prior to joining KKR, General Petraeus served over 37 years in the U.S. Army, including command of coalition forces during the Surge in Iraq, command of U.S. Central Command, and command of coalition forces in Afghanistan. Following his service in the military General Petraeus served as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. “General Petraeus is a longtime friend and colleague I am honored to host at Long Island University,” said Congressman Israel. “His wealth of experience in global affairs is virtually unmatched and brings depth and perspective to the global conflicts in the past and how what we’ve learned can help mitigate our involvement in the world going forward.” Congressman Steve Israel is Chairman of the Global Institute at Long Island University, a university Writer-InResidence. During his sixteen years as a Member
of Congress, Israel’s office recovered nearly $9 million in retroactive benefits for New Yorkers who served in the Armed Forces. As a member of both the House Armed Services Committee and the Appropriations Defense Subcommittee, Israel has unique expertise in national and global security issues. He maintains strong relationships with military, intelligence and national leaders at home and abroad. He’s experienced in the areas of missile technology, cyber defense and professional military education. Israel is also a widely sought expert on the National Intelligence Council’s quadrennial forecasts of future conflict. He created the Democratic Study Group on National Security and has lectured at West Point and the National Defense University, and delivered the commencement address at the Navy War College.

GINGERBREAD CREATIONS - It’s that time of year again! On Friday, December 1st and Saturday, December 2nd, preschoolers, school age children and teens decorated Gingerbread Houses at the Connetquot Public Library. Guy from Swan Bakery returned once more to take part in this exciting yearly event. With colorful edible candies and icings, children decorated their festive gingerbread houses. From snow people made of marshmallows to rooftops of “icing” snow, delectable wintry scenes were created. Whether a centerpiece or a delicious dessert, a fun time was had by all. The library thanks the Teen Advisory Board for their assistance and wishes all of our members a happy holiday season.

Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School had students, teachers and parents play games for a good cause during the school’s fourth annual Rock, Paper, Scissors Night. The event benefitted Matthew’s Wish, an organization whose mission is to give back to others. Matthew was a 13year old whose last wish was to fill an 18-wheeler with toys for hospitalized children before he passed
away in 2011. With the love and support of family and friends, his mother made his dream a reality. Cherokee Street Elementary School Student Council adviser Ryan Cavanagh and Principal Jill Lahey, along with student council members, supported the organization this year by collecting toys and providing the community with a fun game night. “Over the last four years, the Cherokee Street
Paws of War
School community has donated more than 1,400 brand new toys and games to be passed along to hospitalized children,” said Mr. Cavanagh. This year’s event in particular collected 300 new gifts which were donated to Matthew’s Wish at the nonprofit’s Parade of Toys event on December 9th. The winner of the Rock, Paper, Scissors tournament was fourth-grade student Jordyn DeMatteo.
You may not know this, but the Canine Careers students at Islip Career Center offer free dog grooming services to veterans that receive therapy dogs through the Paws of War Program. Therapy Dog Visit
Bella, the therapy dog, visited Deborah Neri’s classroom at Brookhaven Learning Center’s included site within Samoset Middle School for the first time. Bella will visit their classroom once a week so the students can learn to be comfortable around dogs and treat them properly, as
well as help them relax and stay calm. Brookhaven Learning Center and the Samoset Middle School locations are both Eastern Suffolk BOCES sites that provide services to students with special education needs. Bella is a loveable Newfoundland and the
students were so excited to meet her. Students were introduced to her and spent some time getting to know her. They pet her and brushed her hair (with some assistance). As they become accustomed to her, they can play with her on the mats in the classroom. Touch and texture help students on the autism spectrum learn, especially students who are nonverbal. Said Special Education Teacher Deborah Neri, “I want my students to feel comfortable so that they can learn to treat dogs properly. They will see that Bella will not hurt them. This is something that is happy and fun, and also therapeutic because it will help them relax.”
Hundreds of students, along with their families, teachers, administrators and friends were recently amazed by the colors, lights and decorations outside of Connetquot Central School District’s OakdaleBohemia Middle School during the second annual “Winter Wonderland” event. Santa Claus arrived promptly at 6 p.m. courtesy of the local fire department volunteers, as he set up his welcome mat inside the OBMS courtyard, which was appropriately renamed the North Pole for the evening. Excited children,
along with their parents, spoke to Santa about their year, made a few requests and took home treats prepared by his elves. Inside the “Wonderland,” entertainment was provided by Mrs. Claus’ storytelling, the OBMS Jazz Band and String Ensemble, the Roseland Dancers, along with Jester Jim and magician Gary the Great. The Reindeer Café provided complimentary hot chocolate and cookies, while pretzels, hot dogs and pizza were available to purchase. Additionally, the indoor Santa’s Workshop provided
opportunities for the children to have their faces painted, create colorful sand projects and work on a variety of craft activities. “The dedication and vision of the PTA and community volunteers for this year’s ‘Wonderland’ exceeded even our own expectations,” said OBMS PTA President Raymond Carta. “The organization’s goal was to create that magical moment from days past where the entire neighborhood would turn out at the village square to enjoy the special atmosphere of the season with friends and family.”
STEAM Finalists Students from John Halloran’s science research class at Connetquot High School were named one of 255 state finalists in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest, a program that encourages students to solve real-world issues in their community by utilizing their STEAMbased skills. A select group of Mr. Halloran’s science research students - Emily Anne Augulis, Sabah Bari, Biproprosad Das, Paige Savannah Dreher, Keith Richard Grant, Sarah
Hussain, Atif Abbas Khan, Melissa Sena Oz and (Alex) Jia Xi Yeung - were chosen based on their proposal to use STEAM skills to address opioid addiction. In doing such, the students are in the process of developing software applications that integrate wearable technology to monitor and assist patients in the recovery from opioid addiction. As one of five state finalists in the New York, Mr. Halloran will receive a Samsung Chromebook to be utilized within the

classroom. Additionally, Connetquot High School will now have the opportunity to advance in the competition for additional classroom technology prizes. If named the New York State winner in December, Connetquot High School will be rewarded with a $25,000 Samsung Technology package. The Connetquot Central School District congratulates the students on this achievement.

KICKING OFF THE SEASON - On December 2nd, Village of Islandia residents came out to celebrate the holidays at the village’s twelfth annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony. “Joe the Singing Bus Driver” performed under the big tent as he played guitar and sang holiday songs, while residents enjoyed hot cocoa, coffee and cookies. After the tree was lit, Santa Claus came down to give out toys to the good little boys and girls of Islandia. The children also received candy canes, courtesy of Mrs. Claus.

Fourth-grade students at Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School recently practiced their spelling skills with the use of hockey sticks. During their physical education class, the students used

On December 7th, Supervisor Ed Romaine thanked members of the Red Knights Motorcycle Club New York Chapter 26 for their heartwarming contributions to the Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE Toy Drive. Each year, the club holds an event to collect Teddy Bears for the drive. In addition to collecting teddy bears this year, the club also raised $750 to be used toward the purchase of toys for needy children in Brookhaven Town. New Member Appointed On Thursday, December 7th, Victoria Molloy was unanimously appointed to the Longwood Board of Education for a term of office from December 7th, 2017 – May 15th, 2018. Mrs. Molloy replaces Board member Philip Reany, Jr. who recently passed away. After consideration of numerous candidates, the Board of Education appointed Mrs. Molloy to fill the current vacancy. Mrs. Molloy is a Longwood alumna, with two children in the District who are in the sixth- and ninth-
grades. Mrs. Molloy currently serves as a legislative aide to Fourth District Councilman Michael Loguercio. “Mrs. Molloy is an excellent addition to the Longwood Board of Education,” said President Frank Muraca. “Her passion and dedication to education, as well as for our students were very evident in the interview process. Additionally, her experience combined with her understanding of the culture of our school district will be a

Musical Makerspace Inspiring ingenuity hit a high note as Lynwood Elementary School fifthgrade students in the Sachem Central School District constructed musical instruments in their makerspace room out of everyday household items. Students in Tara Trimboli’s fifth-grade class
turned ordinary items into musical instruments as they collaborated to build various types of sound-making inventions. They incorporated everyday items found around a home such as paper towel rolls, paper plates, shoeboxes, rubber bands, corn kernels and balloons. Each student was
challenged to construct a functional sound-making instrument using only the items provided. Throughout the activity, students were encouraged to revisit designs to make improvements as they continued through the construction process.

During a recent visit to the Sachem Central School District’s middle schools, Sachem High School East and North students enrolled in the Healthy Schools, Healthy Communities class presented lessons regarding the dangers
associated with drug use to sixth-grade students. As part of the high school course, students are transformed into teachers, equipped with the skills to educate students on the dangers of drugs and the importance of making healthy choices
throughout life. Through the Too-GoodFor-Drugs curriculum, the high school students deliver a series of lessons as they periodically visit the district middle schools, delivering students valuable information to lead healthy lives.

Gaining Knowledge in the computer lab. Ozobots are small, programmable robots that make calculated movements based on drawn combinations of line sequences on paper. Both activities introduce the eager students to the ever-expanding field of computer coding, as they build their own sequences and familiarize themselves with the language necessary to become a successful programmer.
“One goal is for students to gain a deeper understanding of coding and the language of computers,” said Edward J. Bosti Elementary School Computer Science Club adviser Stephanie Gozaloff. “Additionally, students are working on increasing their critical thinking and problemsolving skills by becoming more creative thinkers along the way.”
Letters to Santa In an effort organized by the building’s student council, Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School students showcased their literacy skills as they put pen to paper and took part in a successful letterwriting campaign. The initiative was coordinated
as part of Macy’s Believe program benefiting MakeA-Wish. “Macy’s will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for each letter written by the students,” said Mrs. Kenna. “Cherokee students are expected to exceed last year’s total of 475 letters this year!” As part of the program,
Macy’s has committed to donating up to $1 million to the foundation. The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions, and seeks to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

Last on the List Just five days until Christmas, and I suppose I should begin my shopping soon. It’s funny, with the sole exception of Black Friday when I purchased precisely one gift - I haven’t done so much as compile a list in the days that have elapsed. Perhaps it’s because, save for the usual collection of gift cards and standard annual favorites, there is rarely an occasion when anyone can offer a suggestion of what they would like. Not that I am much better when it comes to this. Most years, a gift card is just as good as any particular object I can come up with, or maybe tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Of course, there are always my two standbys - a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey,” and a puppy. Yes, the 3 year-old child in me hasn’t quite grown
up yet. Alas, my apartment doesn’t allow for a furry fourlegged friend; besides, my little baby betta Spud would be jealous. They say people have become increasingly thoughtless in the age of technology, opting to do most of their shopping online and “mail it in” when it comes to selecting the perfect present. I, for one, still prefer to personally browse the stores, even if I have a fairly good idea of what I want to buy. Nothing quite compares to that personal touch. So why have I barely begun this process with less than a week remaining ‘til Christmas? An excellent question, deflected by a focus on de-twinkling my flickering window lights, decorating my balcony just in time for the annual cleaning-of-thegutters to completely cover everything in a fine black

time. Students created comparison posters showcasing current trends and how they contrasted with ones of the past. The posters were displayed amongst the time capsule artifacts for the visitors to enjoy as they viewed the collection of items. Concluding the special day was a parade throughout the building led by past teachers and staff, followed by each kindergarten class dressed in holiday costumes.
