Nominated by their physical education teacher Jessica Perry, these students are exceptional talents both in and outside of the classroom. As Suffolk Zone winners, these students were recognized by NYSAHPERD for their achievements in physical education as well as for leadership, character and academics.

Only one male and one female student from each Suffolk County school may win the Suffolk Zone Award each year. Eligible students must have earned high grades in their physical education classes and maintain an overall superior GPA. They were recognized at a dinner in December.

Home For The Holidays It’s “Home for the Holidays” in December at the Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center Town Waives Dog and Cat Adoption Fees All Month Farmingville.

The Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center is celebrating the holiday season with its “Home for the Holidays” promotion, featuring free pet adoptions throughout the month of December. Each adoption includes free neuter or spay, vaccinations, microchip, license, heartworm test, flea and other tests. The normal adoption fees are $137 for a dog and $140 for a cat. All are adoptable pets looking for a forever home this holiday season.

Those who are interested in adopting a dog or cat should visit the Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center located at 300 Horseblock Road in Brookhaven. A Step Back In Time

Cherokee Street Elementary School fourth grade students stepped back in time as they recently celebrated a Colonial Day. Inspired by their classroom lessons, the students dressed in traditional colonial attire and hosted family and friends for an informational presentation. To prepare for the cross curricular

project, the students worked in the library to research different colonial occupations. They then crafted informative paragraphs describing the products or services provided by the various trades, the tools used for the job and how the trade was important to the Colonial village.

Additionally, the students designed their own

Colonial signs, just like the ones that were often hung outside each shop.

During the presentation, the individuals shared their research with all who were in attendance. At the end of the presentation, all were invited to join together to enjoy some traditional Colonial food, including corn cakes and cider.

Teachers Present Nationally Based on their professional dedication and teaching innovation to the subject matter, Oakdale Bohemia Middle School teachers Mary McGonnell and Dr. Carmela Gustafson were selected to present at the National Council for the Social Studies Conference in Austin, Texas on Nov. 22-23.

Their presentation, “Bringing History Home: Your School as Historical Inquiry,” invited teachers and administrators to

learn how to plan and implement a collaborative local history project. This presentation was based on the work of the social studies department at Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the school.

For that project, each grade created a different learning opportunity for their students. In sixth grade, the students completed historical research on the history of

the building by reviewing yearbooks, time capsules, and resources from the local community. The seventh grade interviewed former teachers and administrators to create an oral history of the building.

The eighth grade completed historical research on demographic, economic and social changes during the last 50 years in and around the school.

Stay Smart This Holiday Season ‘Tis the season of holiday parties and special events.

The festive atmosphere and free food and drinks can make it very tempting to forsake your healthy eating plan! Try these tips to celebrate the season without overdoing it.

• Keep portions in check.

Put less on your plate and pass on that second helping. Split appetizers, entrees and desserts with others. Use a smaller plate when possible so a small serving will look like more.

• Bring a dish. If the event is a potluck (or even if not), offer to contribute a lighter option. That way, you’ll have at least one

healthy choice.

• Go easy. Avoid loading up on foods that are fried, buttered or have a lot of cheese or cream. Look for fruit, veggies and dip, whole grains and baked or grilled items.

• Be prepared. Have a healthy, high-protein, high-fiber meal or snack before you go to the event.

If you’re not hungry it will be easier to avoid overeating.

• Go slow if you drink alcohol. Drinking plenty of water between drinks will quench your thirst and fill you up so you’ll be less likely to overindulge.

• Treat yourself. Try

bite-sized tastes or split portions of desserts, candy and other treats. Let yourself enjoy some of the indulgences of the season without overdoing it.

• Balance is the key.

For example, if dinner is going to be a feast, opt for a lighter lunch.

• Eat smart at holiday events. They often serve up extra helpings of less-thanhealthy foods. If you’re a guest, eat a healthy snack before you go. New Superintendent For Business And Operations The Connetquot Central School District has appointed Brigid Villareale as its new assistant superintendent for business and operations, effective Nov. 12, 2019.

Ms. Villareale comes to Connetquot from the Hempstead Public School District, where she served as the assistant business administrator for the past two years. Under her supervision, she oversaw the planning, development and implementation of the district’s $221 million budget process which included overall budget strategy, alignment with the educational plan and prioritization of needs.

Additionally, she managed school business office operations including long range fiscal planning, accounting, purchasing, payroll, transportation, employee benefits,

accounts payable and audit preparation. She also prepared and submitted all state reports with the appropriate departments including Every Student Succeeds Act Transparency Form, Tax Cap Form, SED Monitoring Surveys, Administrative Salary Disclosure and the Property Tax Report Card.

Prior to Hempstead, Ms. Villareale worked as the district clerk of BRIGID VILLAREALE the Hauppauge Public Schools System, where she spearheaded the System to Track and Account for Children, which ensured that all private placement costs were accurate.

She also prepared and coordinated all necessary documentation for board of education meetings, including personnel,

financial reports and administrative matters.

In addition, she served as a member of the policy committee, provided drafts and legal updates to the committee team and organized revised policies for board approval.

Ms. Villareale is also a dedicated member to multiple professional associations, including the Association of School Business Officials New York, the Nassau ASBO, and the New York State School Board Association.

She was the recipient of the 2019 New York School Business Official Leader of the Year Award from the Association of School Business Officials in New York and sits on the professional development committee for that association.

The Longwood Central School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Thomas Knott as the new principal at Coram Elementary School, effective November 4, 2019. Mr. Knott replaces Susan Connolly, who recently retired.

Since December 2014, Mr. Knott served as assistant principal at Coram where he worked with the district’s literacy and math team, initiated Coram’s Code of Conduct Committee, increased parent involvement, coordinated STEAM activities, and served as the Campus Leader for the Leader in Me initiative.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Pace University, a Master’s degree in Education Literacy from Dowling College and a Post Master’s Certificate from Stony Brook University.

Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker presented a proclamation to congratulate the Longwood School District Chapter of Best Buddies for being designated “Outstanding Chapter” for the 2018-2019 academic year at the Best Buddies International’s Annual Leadership conference recently held in Indiana.

The Longwood Chapter is the largest out of the 20 active chapters on Long Island with over 200 participating students of all intellectual and developmental abilities.

The Longwood Chapter

was recognized based on the incredible impact that has been made to develop opportunities for inclusion and acceptance in the school and community.

As part of the nomination process, Longwood’s chapter submitted photos and information about their numerous activities, including fundraisers, events, and the Best Buddies Prom, which hosts more than 500 attendees.

“The example of the Best Buddies program sets off a chain reaction of friendship and kindness that extend far beyond the students’ time in the program,”

said Legislator Anker. “I congratulate the students of the Longwood Chapter and their teachers for a job well done in providing a community of acceptance for their classmates and peers.”

Best Buddies International is the world’s largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of those living with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Junior Foreign Language Honor Society students at Longwood Junior High School are raising awareness and funds for artists in Nicaragua and Guatemala through the sale of colorful bracelets called pulseras.

The students joined a nationwide program called the Pulsera Project, a registered nonprofit that educates, empowers, and connects Central American artists with students in more than 1,600 U.S. schools.

“Students were excited to sell and purchase the bracelets after learning their origin and where their money would be donated,” said Spanish teacher and FLHS advisor Kristyn Pellegrini. “I loved seeing the students act as global citizens.”

Organized through the Language Other Than English (LOTE) Department, the students sold 500 hand-woven bracelets and raised close to $2,500. The sale of the bracelets brings awareness

for fair trade jobs, worker rights, sustainability, and education, while learning about the culture, lives, and struggles of Central Americans. During class, the students discussed consumerism and social enterprise.

“Selling the bracelets was a good way to spread a positive message to our school while raising funds for a good cause,” said eighth-grade student Nancy Diep.

PRACTICING DIPLOMACY - The Bay Shore High School Model UN club hosted students from Massapequa, the Knox School, Plainview, Kings Park and Sachem for a conference. The students worked on their diplomacy skills as they solved problems of international relations. For the first time, a problem was included that required the students to solve a problem within the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Gartland, Named To NYS FBLA Board Of Trustees Jessica Gartland, a Longwood High School business teacher and coadvisor for the school’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Chapter, has been elected to the New York State FBLA Board of Trustees. Ms. Gartland will be serving FBLA’s District 1S - Suffolk County.

In this role, Ms. Gartland will assist with the organization of FBLA local and state-level student meetings, oversee regional and state-level student competitions, author exams for the state-level competitions, and assist FBLA student officers with their demanding roles and responsibilities.

Additionally, Ms. Gartland will provide guidance to align New York State

Brookhaven’s Got Talent Student Art Show On October 29, 70 residents attended the Town of Brookhaven Youth Board’s first “Brookhaven’s Got Talent Student Art Show.” Students enrolled in seventh through twelfth grade were asked to submit summer-themed photos, paintings and/or drawings through Brookhaven Town’s website, and entries were accepted from late June through September 27. In total, 19 submissions were received from 15 students. The event took place in the second-floor lobby at Brookhaven Town Hall, where prints of the students’ art work are currently displayed for residents to view.

Supervisor Ed Romaine said, “The goal behind this initiative was to recognize and encourage young, talented artists in Brookhaven Town.

We ended up having an intergenerational event where students were engaging with their peers, adults and seniors, sharing details about their art. It is gratifying to see so many residents coming out on a cold, rainy October night to view the students’ exceptional work and encourage their artistic talents.”

Councilman Michael Loguercio, Town Board Liaison to the Brookhaven Youth Bureau said, “The

Youth Board did a great job of bringing the Brookhaven community together to celebrate the students’ art work. It is encouraging to see students from school districts throughout Brookhaven Town participate. The large turnout and positive feedback we received will certainly encourage these students to continue to pursue their artistic goals.”
