Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) announced that it has entered into a new partnership with the nonfor-profit BroadHollow Theatre Company in East Islip. The new program will be a symbiotic relationship between the Theatre Company and FREE wherein the theater will receive valuable help with their day-to-day operations and the individuals supported by FREE will gain valuable experience in the community. As part of this partnership, persons with disabilities will be offered the opportunity to explore and develop their full vocational potential.

“We are so excited to enter into this partnership with the BroadHollow Theatre Company, who has long been a friend to FREE,” said Robert S. Budd, CEO for FREE. “We are pleased to be able to offer individuals

who participate in our theatre day program with opportunities to gain real world experience. It really shows them that anything is possible. I’m proud to be able to give them hope and help in making their dreams come true.”

Participants in the program will have the opportunity to engage in local community interactions/relationships with merchants, and working on opportunities that enhance their skills.

Training will focus on helping FREE’s men and women enhance their job skills through a community based initiative and at the same time allow FREE to support a local theater. The BroadHollow Theatre Company will benefit by enhancing the theater going experience for the community. A number of FREE’s men and women have been given the opportunity to work

A WITNESS TO HISTORY SUBMITTED BY: CATE DUNN, AGE 11, FAIRFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Have you ever witnessed history? I have - my school was given a Historical Marker when it turned 90. My school, Fairfield Elementary, has been around for 90 years! Fairfield Elementary was originally called the Massapequa Avenue School. On October 27th, 2015, I witnessed history.

I have learned many things about Fairfield Elementary, and the Massapequa Avenue School, that I didn’t know before. In 1925, the original Massapequa Avenue was completed and ready for students to attend. About 100 students attended daily classes, but throughout the years, many more students enrolled in the school.

Did you know that my school was originally an apple orchard?

Now, my school has changed a lot.

Most grades in my school have about 100 people, while the old school had about 100 in total. I have learned the history of my school.

As well as my school being built in the 1920’s, I have also researched the Roaring 20’s, in particular, an invention. One thing invented in the 1920’s was bubblegum. In 1928, Walter Diemer invented bubblegum.

Believe it or not, it was actually invented accidentally! Walter Diemer was playing around with new gum recipes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the Fleer Chewing Gum Company factory. He ended up with the perfect batch. It was different, less sticky. Have you ever wondered why bubblegum is pink? It is pink because pink was the only color food dye that Walter Diemer had on hand. I love gum and I have it almost every day.

Walter Diemer’s accident turned into a brilliant invention.

In addition to learning about an invention in the 1920’s, we also learned about an event. The event I researched was the tri-

state tornado of 1925. The massive tornado struck the people of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.

The damage of the storm was estimated at 16.5 million dollars.

This horrible disaster changed the lives of many. Many homes were destroyed. Almost 700 people were killed and 2,027 were injured.

I have experienced Hurricane Sandy, another natural disaster.

It changed the lives of many, including mine. The forecast was for showers and cooler temperatures, but what they didn’t know was a tornado was coming.

The Roaring 20’s was a rewarding time.

Although things were difficult sometimes, everything was worth it in the end.

If my school was not built, I wouldn’t be going to Fairfield today.

If gum was not invented, I would not be able to blow the delicious bubbles.

The 1920’s was a time when many life-changing things happened.

the middle of my living room undecorated, but I have barely scratched the surface of my gift shopping. And by barely, I mean I spent the majority of our annual Black Friday trek into the madness that is Roosevelt Field splurging on myself. To date, my list consists of a collection of names to buy for, but no corresponding “perfect” presents as of yet.

I don’t know what it is this year. Thanksgiving came and went, and the transition into the official holiday season seemed to go well enough.

But then… there it remained, stuck between my own haphazard shopping spree and

the massive process of wading through the unpacked boxes of decorations strewn about my apartment. Oh, and then the Christmas cards I decided to order arrived, to be added to the growing pile of things to be done. I suppose I should get them in the mail this week.

Of course, I realize I’m not alone in this scenario. There are those who claim to have their holiday preparations completed by Thanksgiving weekend; but we all know this is highly unrealistic. Just one quick look around the neighborhood tells me that there are plenty of people in the same boat as me, with freshly cut trees strapped to the tops of their cars, and half-strung lights hanging from their rafters.

And the stores. We all know

there are enough last minute shoppers to make Black Friday look like just your average day at the mall. Take the male shopper from last week’s column, throw in everyone else who – like me – just hasn’t had the wherewithal to get it together in the three weeks that have elapsed since the last piece of pumpkin pie was consumed and, there you have it. A society of procrastinators.

It’s funny, since this is the so-called “most wonderful time of the year” that everyone looks forward to; yet all we hear is what a hassle it is to accomplish the long list of tasks associated with it.

When do we stop and enjoy this magical season, exactly?

January maybe? At this rate, I might be done with my Christmas shopping by then.

The Little Tree

To be noticed, it tried many tricks.

With hatchets, workers chopped down all Of the evergreens that had grown tall.

They took away all the towering trees.

Ignored the little one that hardly Reached above their knees.

To decorate houses and halls for X-mas The trees were meant.

All over different cities they were sent.

Proudly, with their needles raised, The wind their “good-bye” to the blue spruce traced.

The grounds yawned where the trees had been.

Only the unwanted little spruce was seen.

Snow soon after began to fall; The little tree dreamt of being strong and tall.

He knew that the trees that had left him Would shine and twinkle when the day got dim.

On the day before X-mas, a father and son For a walk in the snow covered woods had gone.

“Father, oh father, come and see.

Here is a beautiful little X-mas tree!”

The child exclaimed and stroked the tree.

“This is just the right size for me!”

State Champions The Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School (CHS) recently surprised its Ladies Volleyball Team in celebration of the team’s recent New York State AA Championship win.

As the team came home, they were greeted by a cheering crowd of more than 100 fans and two celebratory fire trucks from the Bohemia Fire Department. The fire

department organized a colorful parade of vehicles to congratulate the team and welcome them home.

Friends, family, Board of Education president Mrs. Milynn Augulis and New York State Senator and Connetquot Alum Hon. Tom Croci welcomed the team home with balloons, banners and flowers, showing their tremendous pride in the CHS Ladies Volleyball team’s great

accomplishment.

The 2015 championship win was the first in the school’s history. Cassandra Patsos, Mackenzie Cole and Nicole Migliozzi were selected to the NY State All-Tournament team, and Migliozzi was named Most Valuable Player. All three are underclassmen, and already looking forward to next season!

Freezin for a Reason

Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) staff from special education facilities in Centereach, Oakdale, Port Jefferson, and Westhampton Beach participated in the Town of Brookhaven’s Polar Plunge – Freezin’ for a Reason – for Special Olympics at

Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. Collectively, the four centers raised over $5,400.

Centereach Academic Center Principal Sue Goltz said, “The Polar Plunge is a unique way for the staff to engage in team-building exercises while raising donations for a good cause

like Special Olympics.”

Many ESBOCES staff members participated in the plunge last year. They spread the word about how much fun they had, for a good cause, and managed to convince more people to plunge this year.

On December 2nd, Councilmen Neil Foley and Kevin LaValle met with students from Emanuel Lutheran School in Patchogue to accept donations for the Town’s INTERFACE Toy Drive at the Town’s Vehicle Control facility in North Patchogue. The Toy Drive started on November 30th and will run through December 21st.

On December 11th, all four JVC Broadcasting radio stations will broadcast live from Brookhaven Town Hall to promote the Town’s INTERFACE Toy Drive. All the popular on-air personalities from My Country 96.1, LI News Radio, Party

105 and LaFiesta will be broadcasting from the lobby of Town Hall. Last year, residents donated thousands of toys ranging from stuffed animals, board games, dolls, toy trucks and bicycles. The event runs from 7:00 am to 5:00 p.m. It is open to the public and those who stop by are asked to donate a new unwrapped toy to help bring joy to a family in need.

The INTERFACE Toy Drive is sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau. They will provide presents for over 7,000 needy children from infant to 15 years old.

More than 60 Connetquot Central School District 1st through 5th grade students at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, 5-10 years-old, recently learned fire safety and fire prevention skills from Holtsville Fire Department firefighters Peter Schreiber, Bryan Lopez and Michael Rodrigues.

The firefighters took

turns talking about the dangers of fire, methods of avoiding injuries and how firefighters work to protect the children and community. After answering a series of questions by the excited students, Mr. Schreiber asked for volunteers to demonstrate the correct way to “stop-drop-androll.”

As part of an Edward J. Bosti Elementary School initiative to teach students how to respond in dangerous situations, students were reminded about the safety lessons they learn at school, and were asked to share the fire prevention and safety tips with their siblings and parents at home.

Ms. Phillips was an accomplished competitor in track & field, basketball and soccer. She will join the Bison track & field team at Bucknell, a liberal arts college located in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.

Bucknell competes in the NCAA division-I Patriot League and ranks #2 in

More than 200 Connetquot Central School District Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS) students, 11-14 years old, recently welcomed retired, decorated Suffolk County Police Officer Paul Failla to campus as part of the Connetquot School District’s “United We Stand for a Drug & Bully Free Community” week.

Mr. Failla spoke to the students about his experience serving the community, including how to avoid making destructive decisions, learn conflict management, accept personal responsibility and be a leader. He also spoke candidly with students about the negative effects of bullying, how to avoid bullies, racism, internet

safety and staying away from illegal drugs.

After the presentation, RMS Guidance staff and Principal Charles D. Morea joined school community in thanking Paul Failla for sharing his experience and wisdom to help students protect themselves online and stand up against bullies.

Bringing the Wizard to Life

Having opened on Friday, November 13th and running through Sunday, November 15th, the greatest family musical of all time made its way down the Yellow Brick Road to the Bayway Arts Center.

The FREE Players treated the audience to a familyfriendly musical where they joined Dorothy Gale of Kansas as she dreamt of what lies over the rainbow.

Along the way they met the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion as they were taken on a magical journey through the Land of Oz, complete

with a wizard, witches and winged monkeys. At the end of their trip they discovered the importance of friendship, and realized there really is no place like home.

MENORAH LIGHTING - On December 7th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and members of the Town Council celebrated Hanukkah with the annual Community Menorah Lighting ceremony at Town Hall. The event was led by Rabbi Mendy Goldberg of the Lubavitch of the East End in Coram. Guests enjoyed traditional Hanukkah songs and stories, entertainment and refreshments, including hot latkes and donuts.

Senior Commits Longwood High School student-athlete Alison Johnson officially declared her intention to attend Adelphi University this fall by signing her National Letter of Intent to play lacrosse for the Panthers.

Throughout her high school lacrosse career, Alison has been named All-County, All-Division, Academic All-American, National Tournament Champion and was a member for the AllTournament team. In both ninth and eleventh grade,

she was designated Most Valuable Player.

“Alison has been on the varsity team since eighth grade and has been the offensive leader since that time,” said varsity girl’s lacrosse coach Randall Grossman.

“She was named captain of the team in 10th grade and has led the team in every way possible since then. She is an amazing player that not only plays at the best level possible, but also helps keep the team running on and off the field. She has

a passion for the game that only exceptional athletes show.”

In addition to her athletic achievements, Alison has attained High Honor Roll throughout high school and is a member of the National Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society.

Outside of the classroom, Alison volunteers for the LYSA lacrosse team for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
