As part of Connetquot Central School District’s commitment to providing students with enriched learning opportunities, third grade students across all elementary schools have the chance to learn a second language as part of the district’s Foreign Language in the Elementary School program.

The optional program is being piloted this year as a “Lunch and Learn” initiative, which is offered to enrolled students during their lunch periods every other day.

Connetquot High School Spanish teachers William Bedell and Elise Ruyle are spearheading the instruction across the schools, with each teaching at several schools individually.

Students have learned the alphabet, how to make basic introductions, created “All About Me” projects in Spanish and learned about seasonable traditions associated with the time of year.

Dr. Desai earned her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from JK Medical College and Research Center. She then completed her residency and fellowship at Winthrop-University Hospital. Here she was

awarded a First Prize in a research trial involving Rivaroxaban (Xarelto) and Conventional Anticoagulants in the use of newly diagnosed venous thromboembolism.

Dr. Desai is fluent in Hindi and enjoys practicing Indian classical dance, Bharatanatyam. She adores spending time with her family and became inspired to pursue a career in medicine when a relative was stricken with cancer.

“At first it made me angry, frustrated and sad. It had, however, further piqued my interest in finding a cure for cancer,” said Dr. Desai. “This led me to medicine, and eventually to pursue oncology.”

HONORING OUR VETERANS - On Veterans Day, we honor the men and women who have fought for our freedom and the active duty military personnel who continue to fight for us at home and overseas. On Monday, November 11th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined the Middle Island Civic Association, the Middle Island Fire Department, and the Longwood community at Bartlett Pond Park for a Veterans Day commemoration ceremony. The event included a flag ceremony, poetry reading, and wreath-laying. “I commend the Longwood community for recognizing the work of our veterans,” said Legislator Anker. “I am honored to pay tribute to the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve our country.” Pictured center: 99-yearold Would War II Veteran Frank LaMagra. The Zing is an inspirational book written by Licensed Mental Health Counselor, motivational speaker and founder and director of Family & Personal Counseling, Ronald Villano.

Ronald tragically lost his son in a car accident in 1998 and his life changed forever. However, through writing this book, along with working in a field which allows him to help others, he has changed the lives of many for the better in memory and honor of his son. Changing your perspective on your circumstances can truly transform your life.

The Zing was originally published in 2006 but it has regained popularity recently. Author Mr. Villano said, “I believe it’s the only self-help book that doesn’t tell you how to think, it provokes you how to think.” This book will teach you to change your perspective, make healthier decisions in your relationships and reduce stress.

The book also includes pictures and opportunities to journal. Villano values journaling as a way to assist in any healing process.

Teachers Association Donates Blankets

UNITED WE STAND FOR A DRUG-FREE COMMUNITY - In recognition of United We Stand for A Drug-Free Community Week, staff and students from Cherokee Elementary School signed a “One School, One Goal, Bully & Drug-Free” Banner which now resides in the school’s hallway for all to see. Anthony Felicio, Jr., President of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA), recently dropped off 25 blankets to the ‘Connetquot Cares’ coalition.

Raymond Carta of the Knights of Columbus, and supporter of the coalition, thanked Felicio and the members of the CTA for their generous donation of new blankets.

Felicio responded by saying that his members are “… answering the call to help those in need in our community.”

The blankets were

delivered to the Sayville Soup Kitchen by the Knights of Columbus, where they will be greatly appreciated. The Connetquot Teachers Association supports the needs of the community in many ways.

Felicio like to say that the CTA’s “…philanthropic efforts outside of the schoolhouse benefit the entire community.”

For three consecutive years the Connetquot Teachers Association was presented with the NYSUT (New York State

United Teachers) Award for outstanding service, not only to the community, but to organizations within New York State.

The CTA has been an important supporter of organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, the Cohalan Children’s Center, the Bohemia Historical Society, Make a Wish Foundation, Rotary Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ride for Life and have contributed significantly to financial awards for Connetquot students.

Promoting Financial Literacy Connetquot High School National Business Honor Society members along with business teacher and work-based learning coordinator Andrea Pizzimenti recently visited the fifth grade students at the Helen B. Duffield Elementary School to share tips and information about personal financial literacy.

Prior to the visit, the high school students participated in Junior

Achievements High School Heroes program, a servicelearning project sponsored

by Junior Achievement USA that provides high school students with the opportunity to become role models for elementary students. These “heroes” then teach and empower elementary students by using interactive, handson, lessons centered around work readiness, financial literacy and entrepreneurship.

The

“High School Heroes” plan to visit each of the elementary schools within the district during the school year.”

Connetquot High School Heroes are selected based on their leadership and training through the National Business Honor Society.

Mrs. Pizzimenti expressed her pride in the outstanding effort of the students who mentored the Duffield students.

In order to prepare for the project, students watched an exciting video which highlighted roller coasters from around the world. The students discussed what made roller coasters both safe and fun, then shared their own

experiences amongst one another. They were then asked to create a design for their own “roller coasters” using insulated foam tubing, tape, cardboard tubes and other materials which were supplied for the duration of the 60-minute time frame.

Moving Tribute For Veterans Among the approximately forty Veterans invited to the 2019 Sayville Middle School Annual Veterans Day luncheon reception, three—Mr. Donald Decker, Mr. Sal Nicosia and Mr. John Longo—were Veterans in their nineties having served in WWII. Lunch was just the beginning of the special tribute for the Veterans in attendance. Once they had their picture taken at a restored Jeep parked in the Commons (donated for the occasion by Linda Davis), the Veterans were escorted to the main event in the filled-to-capacity auditorium of students and faculty. The Middle School Band played a military fanfare as the Veterans paraded into the auditorium where they were welcomed with a standing ovation lasting several minutes.

Opening the celebration, the students and staff honored the Veterans who were seated on stage with America the Beautiful, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Middle School chorus sang God Bless America.

A moving video tribute to the U.S. Military was followed by a few words from social studies teacher and veteran Major Mike Huggins. Selected

II Veteran Petty Officer First Class E6 Navy Donald Decker, the grandfather of Middle School Assistant Principal Brian Decker. (Mr. Sal Nicosia and Mr. John Longo were specially honored last year.) After sharing his grandfather’s accomplishments (see insert), Mr. Decker presented him with an American Flag plaque (hand crafted by retired teacher Cheryl CallenAdams) to commemorate his service.

The tribute continued with the Sayville Middle School community announcing that as a result of a fundraising activity, they had collected $500 to donate to two local veterans groups— Sayville VFW Post 433 and American Foreign Legion Post 651. In addition, guest dignitaries 7th District

Assemblyman, Andrew R. Garbarino and 4th District, NY State Senator, Phil Boyle shared a few words thanking the Veterans for their heroism and service.

Principal Thomas Murray closed the ceremony with reminders why Veterans Day is important. This very special Middle School Ceremony demonstrated to the students that freedoms we all enjoy are hard won. Veterans Day is one way to acknowledge the service and sacrifice made by these brave men and women in the military who have shown tremendous moral courage to defend our country. To all our Veterans, thank you!

After the concluding video salute of Amazing Grace, some of the Veterans remained to visit the classrooms and speak in smaller groups about their military experiences.

DECKER HONORED - During the 2019 Sayville Middle School Annual Veterans Day Tribute, 97-year-old Donald Decker, a World War II Veteran, was honored and presented with a handcrafted wooden American Flag by his grandson, Sayville Middle School Assistant Principal Brian Decker.

It’s “Home for the Holidays” in December at the Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center Town Waives Dog and Cat Adoption Fees All Month Farmingville. The Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center is celebrating the holiday season with its “Home for the Holidays” promotion, featuring free pet adoptions throughout

the month of December.

Each adoption includes free neuter or spay, vaccinations, microchip, license, heartworm test, flea and other tests. The normal adoption fees are $137 for a dog and $140 for a cat. Pictured left to right are “Fiyero,” “Superman,” “Simba” and “Penelope.”
