On November 17th the Connetquot Youth Football Organization (CYFO) ‘Tbirds’ defeated their Sayville rivals in the championship game of the Police Athletic League (PAL) Division I (U13) 2019 final. Connetquot, which completed an undefeated season (10-0) outscored Sayville by a score of 2410 ‘under the lights’ at the PAL field in Holtsville, NY. While the season’s success and championship

outcome were total team efforts, Mike Buttino’s three touchdowns, and Nick Pepitone’s single score proved too much for Sayville in the PAL final.

The night before the championship game the coaches arranged for a team dinner and a special guest speaker who talked about his life in the NFL. Amityville’s Gary Lee Brown talked to the team about their season, and the importance of

teamwork, fundamentals and confidence. Brown would play three seasons for the Green Bay Packers while earning a Super Bowl Championship ring in 1996.

The players were excited to talk to Gary, marvel at his championship ring, and listen to his advice.

Congratulations to the players and coaches of the CYFO ‘Tbirds’ on an outstanding season they can all be proud of.

The Charity of the Month for December is: John Theissen Children’s Foundation www.jtcf.org

John Theissen Children’s Foundation began after their Executive Director & Founder, John Theissen, had stayed at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park when he was 17 years old. John needed to have brain surgery for a brain tumor that he unfortunately developed.

The day he walked into the hospital he met a 7 year old girl named Tasha. She spent many hours with John for the next few days, always trying to make him happy.

Tasha received very little family support, however she expected her family to attend a holiday party that was sponsored by the hospital staff.

Unfortunately they did not attend. John was too ill to take her, so his family did. When Santa asked her what she had wanted she replied, “I would like a teddy bear for my friend upstairs.”

John felt fortunate to be that friend. Tasha’s positive attitude and generous spirit inspired John. Once he got out of the hospital he wanted to help children just like her.

In 1992, John held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

Holiday Season Helping Sick & Underprivileged Children! the beginning of what has become the year round organization, John Theissen Children’s Foundation.

Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities.

However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and childcare facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age and younger) and they assist sick and underpriviledged children in other ways that are needed.

On December 5th at 6:30PM, John Theissen Children’s Foundation will be hosting A Night of Champions Holiday Gala!

This Gala will feature one of New York’s biggest and best live auctions, great raffles, door prizes, gourmet dishes provided by 2nd Street Gourmet, desserts provided

by Francesco’s Bakery and a VIP Lounge Meet & Greet with celebrity professional athletes. Admission is $50 and VIP admission is $350. To purchase a ticket, please visit

Athletes Assist Younger Students On Nov. 4, the Connetquot High School’s Athletes Helping Athletes Club introduced the program’s newest members during a fun and inspirational meeting in the school’s cafeteria.

Throughout the school year, students enrolled in Athletes Helping Athletes visit each of the district’s seven elementary schools to talk to fifth graders about their own experiences of transitioning to new buildings throughout the

years. The AHA members also work with the students in a variety of leadership and team-building activities, in addition to explaining the many advantages of participating in extracurricular programs, such as fine arts, music and sports.

FIREFIGHTERS FOR THE DAY - Students from Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently traded in their notebooks and pencils for fire hats and extinguishers when they became firefighters for the day during their recent visit to the Lakeland Fire Department. After an informative safety demonstration courtesy of firefighter Juan and firefighter Brian, the students were invited to explore three stations at the fire house. The stations included a guided trek through the smokehouse simulator, a visit to the Garden of Heroes to pay respects to 9/11 victims, and an in-depth look into the tools which are housed within the sides of the fire engines. The students and their parents were each given a “Math Night Passport,” which granted them access to explore all of the activity stations in any particular order. Upon successful completion of an activity station, students’ passports were marked off by the station’s facilitator, thus signifying that they mastered the game at hand.

Both students and their chaperones were then encouraged to visit the Mathnasium rewards table in order to trade in their

passports for goody bags and various giveaways for the attending family members.

On Nov. 1, dozens of students and their families from the Idle Hour Elementary School community gathered in the school’s “cafetorium” to celebrate “Math Night,” an evening filled with mathematical fun and learning.

Spearheaded by Connetquot Central School District Director of Mathematics Louise Burger and the Idle Hour Parent-Teacher Association, students were able to engage in a series of 10 activity stations all aimed at enhancing their

On November 2, teachers, principals, administrators and community members from Long Island school districts came out to Half Hollow Hills High School West in Dix Hills to watch the Eighth Annual Half Hollow Hills Invitational, which was presented by the school and SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI).

Now in its eighth year, the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Long Island Half Hollow Hills Invitational has become a staple of the local FIRST Robotics Competition season. The event also signifies the conclusion of the 2019 season. The 2020 FIRST Robotics

Competition season will begin with the kickoff, which will take place on January 4, 2020 at LIU Post Tilles Center.

This year’s event featured 17 teams, which competed using the robots they built for the 2019 SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition that was held in March.

The challenge was dubbed DESTINATION: DEEP SPACESM Presented by The Boeing Company, in which two three-team alliances had two minutes and 15 seconds to prepare the rockets and cargo ship with hatch panels, load as many cargo pods as possible and return the robot to its Habitat.

The winning alliance was

comprised of Sachem High School Team #263 “Sachem Aftershock,” Westhampton Beach High School Team #3171 “Hurricanes” and Hicksville High School Team #1468 “J-Birds” The finalists were Kings Park High School Team #5736 “Kingsmen,” PatchogueMedford High School Team #263 “Mohawks” and Our Lady of Mercy High School Team #6746 “Mustangs.”

The Invitational is designed to showcase the benefits of robotics programs and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education to students, schools, communities and local businesses.

Athletes Promote Positivity Members of the Connetquot High School Athletes Helping Athletes Club promoted positivity, perseverance and resiliency during a recent visit with fifth grade students at the Cherokee Street Elementary School.

“Athletes Helping Athletes had their introductory visit for the 2019-2020 school year,” said Alaina Bennett, who advises the AHA with high school guidance counselor Philip Clark.

“The visit to the fifth grade classrooms provided an opportunity for the Cherokee students to feel comfortable with their new high school friends.”

During the event, the high school athletes shared personal stories about the importance of becoming involved in extracurricular activities such as music, band, various clubs, as

well as sports, and the valuable life lessons they learned by doing so. Each of the visitors talked about how they learned to believe in themselves, and continued to work to reach their goals.

The athletes will be meeting with elementary students throughout the year, and their next visit will cover the important topic of bullying, sportsmanship and civility in January.

Each of their visits will be centered on the themes of promoting confidence, leadership and value-

based messages.

The Connetquot High School Athletes Helping Athletes Club is the largest in Nassau and Suffolk counties. It consists of more than 60 serviceminded students who pledge to stay away from alcohol and drugs, and to share their experiences with elementary school students. Connetquot’s AHA Club partners with Molloy College, and its advocate/mentors consist of caring professionals, including major league athletes.
