The 12th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive for Island Harvest

The 12th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive for Island Harvest, which took place on November 20, collected 3,157 turkeys, 28,000 pounds of food and raised more than $17,000 to date, to support Long Islanders experiencing food insecurity, an issue which is escalating resulting from the Coronavirus pandemic.

For the first time, this year’s turkey drive was contactless to ensure that community residents and businesses were able to safely drop off their holiday donations.

STUDENTS HELP PEOPLE GET ON THEIR FEET - Two distinguished and kindhearted students from the Middle Country Central School District have been assisting others get on their feet for the winter season through their recent sock drive. Noah Hernandez, a first-grade student at New Lane Elementary School, and his brother Hunter Hernandez, a pre-kindergarten student at Bicycle Path Pre K-Kindergarten Center, are collecting pairs of socks to donate to the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless, a non-profit organization that advocates for effective solutions to the homelessness crisis on Long Island. In only two weeks, the Hernandez brothers have exceeded their initial goal, 750 pairs of socks, by collecting 1,500 so far.

While Orville and Wilbur Wright, otherwise known as the Wright Brothers, may be the most widely recognized brothers associated with aeronautics, a pair of French brothers’ accomplishments in the 18th century should not be overlooked. According to Brittanica.com, in 1782, nearly a century before the Wright Brothers were even born, Joseph and Étienne Montgolfier discovered that heated air, when collected inside a large lightweight paper or fabric bag, caused the bag to rise into the air. Various successful experiments preceded the Montgolfiers’ flight on November 21, 1783. That flight, a 5.5 mile journey over Paris that lasted roughly 25 minutes, was the first manned untethered flight in history, firmly establishing the Montgolfier brothers as true pioneers in the field of aeronautics.

Small business owners no doubt recognize the value of repeat customers, but few may recognize just how valuable such customers can be to their bottom lines. A study from researchers at Harvard Business School found that a customer’s eighth purchase was an average of 80 percent higher than his or her first purchase. In addition, a survey from the strategic planning, marketing and sales consultants Altfeld, Inc. found that the probability of selling to an existing customer is between 60 and 70 percent, while that probability shrinks to as low as 5 percent for new customers.

Customer retention strategies like offering superior customer service and seeking input from customers can help small businesses generate more repeat customers, which can greatly improve their chances for long-term success.

Sachem Welcomes New Executive Director For Special Education The Sachem Central School District is proud to welcome Dennis McElheron as the district’s new executive director for special education, filling the vacancy left by Michael Saidens.

Mr. McElheron, a Holbrook resident, joins the district after most recently serving as the district administrator for special education in the North Babylon Union Free School District for two years. There, he was responsible for staffing, supervision and evaluation of the special education department, including teachers, clerical staff, paraprofessionals, speech therapists, social workers and psychologists.

Additionally, he led the district in the development and oversight of innovative programs to meet the needs of special education students in an educational

and fiscally responsible manner.

Prior to his time in the North Babylon Union Free School District, Mr. McElheron was the assistant to the coordinator of student services in the Sachem Central School District for five years, where he was responsible for the oversight of special education staff,

In a small town in Georgia, where they have no animal services available, a dog that has been named Bam Bam was found badly injured.

He appeared to have been hit by a car and was left without medical care. Bam Bam sustained injuries that have left him paralyzed, but Guardians of Rescue have stepped up to take on the challenge of getting him the medical assistance that he needs to walk once again. They are asking for people in the community to chip in to help make it happen.

“This poor dog was basically left to die after what looks like being hit by a car,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “He struggles to try and move even the slightest bit and it’s heartbreaking to watch.

We know that we can help him, but to do so we need the help of compassionate people in the community.”

Guardians of Rescue have started a medical fund where people can donate to help raise the money necessary to care for Bam Bam. He was found alone and struggling

to move, but could wag his tail. The funds will be put to use providing him with the necessary medical technology needed to help him walk again, as well as help him receive the medical care he needs to recover from his other injuries, and be adopted out. Bam Bam will need a specialist in order to be able to walk again.

During the medical exam, the MRI showed that Bam Bam sustained nerve damage. Even with that, Guardians of Rescue is optimistic that with the right medical care the dog will be able to walk again. He will need costly treatment to help him reach that point, but the signs are there that he will be able to recover with the right care.

“Imagine how frightened Bam Bam must have been to be hit by a car and left with injuries that made him unable to move,” Misseri. “One look at this dog, at how brave and determined he is to move around, and it’s clear that we have to do everything we can to help him.”

Hosted by award-winning comedian, writer, producer, actor and television host Seth Meyers, this year’s Constellation Gala was held in honor of Northwell’s healthcare heroes who have treated more than 95,000 COVID-19 patients — more than any healthcare entity in the U.S. The program featured special performances from award-winning actress, singer and songwriter Cynthia Erivo, Travis Wall and headliner Harry Connick, Jr. Attendees included New York City leaders from various industries and philanthropists and volunteer leaders who support Northwell’s Manhattan care sites.

Small Businesses Remain Resilient Amid Pandemic

Amid the historic coronavirus pandemic, businesses are adapting by making major changes to their operations, including increased use of technology, according to the latest PNC semiannual survey of small and mid-size business owners and executives, which concluded Sept. 8.

Eight in 10 business owners reported that they have made adaptations in response to COVID-19, including safety changes in the form of new procedures or physical modifications, while others have adopted work-from-home policies.

“Business owners have learned that the previous status quo won’t work now.

The majority of businesses have reconfigured their operations and for many, these changes will be permanent,” says PNC chief economist, Gus

Faucher. “Their confidence may be shaken, but we know through the history of this survey that business owners are resilient and they know how to adapt to change.”

According to the survey, half of businesses report increased use of technology since the outbreak began.

Nearly three in 10 have added or increased the use of electronic or touchless payment systems, electronic/website-enabled sales or electronic banking/ cash flow management services and 19 percent increased use of fraud/ identity protection tools.

The pandemic has also forced many businesses to shake up their product lineups to better align with consumers’ new habits. A third of business owners report making changes either to the way they sell or deliver their products

and services or to the types of products and services they offer.

Despite these positive signs of transformation and resilience, the drop in business activity over recent months forced many to take drastic measures through workforce reductions; nearly four in 10 businesses have cut workers since the start of the pandemic, although for 87 percent of those, the decrease is considered temporary or a furlough. In fact, 58 percent of the businesses who had temporary layoffs or furloughs have already begun rehiring.

Faucher said that while the worst may be over and economic activity is on the rebound, the “new normal” doesn’t mean a return to robust job and business growth that existed early in 2020. (StatePoint)

Christmas Tree Project Faces Explosive Need In 10th Year

The Christmas Tree Project began eight years ago in Colorado Springs, and its initial success has attracted national interest from people in other cities wanting to donate, get trees as well as wishing to emulate its success. The project is a local grassroots effort to provide free, fullydecorated Christmas trees to families in need. Last year, requests for trees almost sextupled to 17,500 from 2,780 the previous year, arriving nationally from 47 U.S. states and as far away as from Karachi, Pakistan.

“A beautiful, sparkling Christmas tree can make all the difference in the world to a family going through hard times right now,” according to Michelle and David Fein, who started the project in 2010. “This turned out to be such a happy accident for us, that it’s a thrill to be doing it again.”

“In this season of giving,” CBS news correspondent Alex Wagner explained last year, “One Colorado couple never expected that donating their old Christmas tree would lead to a heartwarming annual tradition.” Watch.

The entire project sprang

quite serendipitously from a simple one-line Craigslist ad the Feins posted to give away their artificial Christmas tree in 2010.

They were contacted by 20 people in less than a few hours telling them their stories and vying for that one tree, that Michelle and David decided they had to try to meet the demand.

They told their friends, and soon the word spread.

The story touched a nerve in the Colorado Springs community, and hundreds of people contacted The Christmas Tree Project to donate and request trees, as well as volunteer to help. By the time the first season it was all over, more than 300 trees had been given away.

In a world troubled economically and divided politically, it may even seem a bit surprising.

“It’s been overwhelming to see the vast reservoirs of energy and generosity that exist today when you simply offer people a chance to become involved and contribute, even in a small way,” added the Feins. “And it’s incredibly humbling to see the gratitude small acts of kindness produce.”

Michelle Fein placed on Craigslist for a single tree, brought responses including: “I have 6 kids and no tree…we would like it if it’s still available.”

“If this tree is still available, I sure could use it. My kids are 6 and 9. We won’t have a lot under it this year but there will be something there.”

“My husband broke his leg 5 weeks ago and we are really struggling. We need a tree desperately.”

“It will be my daughter’s first Christmas and we just don’t have the $$ for a tree.”

“I have a boys group home that really can use it..........Let me know.”

This year, the requests are just as numerous, and heartfelt. This story is not really even about Christmas trees. It’s about an amazing effort that started with a chain of small acts of kindness and blossomed into a citywide effort to help people in need have a better Christmas.

Recovered COVID-19 Patients Battling Long-Term Health Effects COVID-19 has impacted tens of thousands of Long Islanders, and many who have recovered from the virus are now combatting a variety of lingering health issues as a result.

Known as “long-haulers” these individuals are living with the chronic effects of the virus that can include organ damage, poor lung function, fatigue, muscle aches, cognitive slowing and headaches. Also, longhaulers still exhibit various symptoms of COVID even after testing negative for the virus.

“The long-lasting health effects of COVID-19 could affect anyone at any age, but appears to be more likely with those over the age of 50,” said Director of Infectious Disease at Catholic Health Service’s (CHS) St. Francis Hospital Alan M. Bulbin, M.D. “Those with other comorbidities, chronic illnesses or those who have had a more serious acute infection are also more likely to be impacted. But we have also seen younger patients show long-term health impacts after recovering from the

virus.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it is actively working to learn more about the range of shortand long-term health effects associated with COVID-19. CDC officials said continued research is revealing that many organs, including the lungs and heart, are impacted by the virus.

Dr. Bulbin recommends that medical treatment for long-haulers should be managed by an individual’s primary care physician.

He said the challenge currently facing doctors in treating those with longlasting health results from COVID-19 is identifying the proper treatment regimen.

To help those dealing with long-term health effects of COVID-19, CHS’s St. Charles Hospital now offers a Post-COVID Outpatient Rehabilitation Program. Patients who are at least 14 days past a COVID-19 diagnosis are provided medicallysupervised physical therapy for endurance training, strength training and

education.

Recognizing a need to develop a program specifically for patients who are dealing with the aftereffects of COVID-19, the medical team at St. Charles used their experience in working with patients who have respiratory illnesses such as emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
