Snowmobile Registration As the weather becomes colder, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation are reminding New Yorkers to register their snowmobiles.

S n o w m o b i l e registrations must be renewed annually. You can do so online on the DMV website, by mail or in person at a DMV office. Last year, 106,867 snowmobiles were registered in New York.

“Snowmobiling is one of the many ways residents and visitors can enjoy winter in New York,” said Terri Egan, DMV Executive Deputy Commissioner.

“Before the snow starts to fall, make sure your snowmobile is registered

so you’re good to go as soon as the weather allows.

You and your passengers should also wear a helmet so you can ride safely.”

Members of a New York State Snowmobile Association (NYSSA) Snowmobile Club can receive a voucher that includes an ID number which can be used to reduce your registration fee.

If you are registering your snowmobile for the first time, here is what you need to bring to a DMV office: a completed Snowmobile Registration Application (MV-82SN) proof of identity and age.

The Long Island Board of REALTORS® Inc. (LIBOR) is proud to announce the launch of the 10th Annual REALTORS® Against Hunger (RAH) Campaign, to fight hunger in our local communities.

To recognize the 10th anniversary of this vital program, LIBOR presented a $5,000 donation to Island Harvest, the largest hunger relief organization on Long Island, during their Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive held on November 17th, 2017 in Bethpage.

This sponsorship donation will be used towards Island Harvest’s

Annual Turkey and Trimmings Collection Campaign, which runs between November 1st and December 31st, 2017.

There are various ways to get involved in this worthy initiative program, from donating non-perishable food items, frozen turkeys or gift cards, to volunteering or hosting a food drive, to purchasing a pre-packaged bag of all the trimmings necessary to complement a traditional holiday dinner at Stop & Shop supermarkets across Long Island; your contribution of food and funds will help ensure that

“New York State is an

exceptional destination for snowmobiling, and the best way to enjoy this winter activity is to ride safely,” said State Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey. “As snowmobilers get prepared for the upcoming season, we remind them to exercise caution and follow safe riding practices when the time comes to head out on the trails.”

DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said, “Snowmobiling is an exciting way for adventurers of all abilities to enjoy the great outdoors and have some winter fun. I also want to remind New Yorkers to register their snowmobiles, which supports new trail construction and our ongoing maintenance of more than 1,800 miles of snowmobile trails on state land, and be sure to

follow appropriate safety precautions while enjoying the great outdoors this winter.”

For non-New Yorkers looking to use their snowmobiles in New York State, you can register if your snowmobile is already registered in your home state. Use the NYS Registration for Out-ofState Snowmobile service to get a temporary (15 day) NYS registration and operate your snowmobile here immediately. We will send you your permanent registration in the mail.

Snowmobilers must carry registration and proof of insurance documents on their person at all times while snowmobiling.

Riders must produce the documents at the request of any law enforcement officer or magistrate.

Additionally, riders must produce insurance

documentation at the request of anyone who is injured or suffers property damage as a result of operation of a snowmobile.

Holders of snowmobile safety certificates must carry the certificate when they are snowmobiling.

DMV also reminds snowmobilers that it is illegal to operate one while impaired by drugs or alcohol, and drivers and passengers must wear helmets on the state snowmobile trail system.

The Middle Country Central School District recently welcomed local race car driver Alyssa Paprocky to Centereach High School. Paprocky visited the school to raise awareness of the hundreds of animals that have been transplanted from Florida and Texas to Long Island animal shelters following the regions devastating

hurricanes.

Paprocky discussed the several ways the students could help these animals and volunteer their time at local animal shelters on Long Island.

The event, sponsored by the school’s Youth for Humanity Club, provided students the opportunity to ask Paprocky about her racing career and

The large-scale exhibit at the New York State Museum in Albany opened on November 4th and they created a six-panel traveling exhibition that is displayed on the 2nd floor gallery in the Brookhaven Town Hall. It will be on display through January 1st, 2018 and will return for Women’s History Month in March 2018.

The exhibit was curated

by Jennifer Lemak, PhD,

Chief Curator of History at the New York State Museum. The reproduced panels were covered by a grant from the New York Council for the Humanities.

The full exhibition catalog will be available to view in the Historian’s Office after December 1st.

The exhibit can be viewed Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

During the months of November and December, the Town of Brookhaven presents Votes for Women: Celebrating New York’s Suffrage Centennial, an exhibit celebrating the centennial of women’s suffrage in New York State.

The exhibit aims to raise public awareness of the struggle for women’s suffrage and equal rights in New York State from the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention through 1917 when New York State

challenges.

The first challenge tested accuracy, in which the goal was to launch five cotton balls into a cup. Next, the power of the catapult was tested as the students pushed their catapults to the limit, launching a marshmallow as far as possible. Finally came the tower test, in which accuracy and power were combined to topple a tower of plastic cups using miniature pumpkins.

Furthering the connection to the design principles necessary to construct a successful catapult, students tracked their test launch results and graphed the effectiveness of angle adjustments and how they correlated to launch distance.

Using the data collected from the accuracy test, they also calculated the accuracy percentage derived from fractions.

At the conclusion of the testing phase, the students competed amongst each other in a schoolwide competition.

Design and engineering principles propelled students during a competition at Wenonah Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District in which fifthgrade students were challenged to construct a catapult that could perform best in three challenges, testing distance, power and accuracy.

Separated into teams, the student-engineers participated in an engaging design activity that incorporated several aspects of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). Beginning with design, students were tasked with sketching two separate plans they believed would obtain the best results. Picking one design, the students then constructed their catapults using household materials such as spoons, rubber bands and popsicle sticks.

Once the creations were finalized, they then carefully used their catapults to launch miniature pumpkins and competed in three different

On Monday, November 20th, Ridge Elementary School students participated in a special event to increase their knowledge about disabilities and foster positive attitudes about people living with disabilities. Coordinated

by Ridge Elementary School Counselor Kristen Kopp, Disability Awareness Day provided the students with a unique opportunity to learn compassion and sensitivity when dealing with someone

who looks or acts differently.

Thirteen workstations were located throughout the gym to demonstrate the difficulties and frustrations that someone with a disability may experience in their everyday life.

Students explored different activities across six classifications including, learning disabilities, autism, intellectual disabilities, speech/language impairments and visual and hearing impairments.

Lessons of Acceptance To assist with activities and share their personal experiences, members of the high school’s Best Buddies Club volunteered their time.

Launched in 2016, the Best Buddies High School Club promotes oneon-one friendships between students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and those without a disability, within the school.

The Christmas Closet of cleaning out the house my grandparents had called home for nearly 60 years, I acquired several boxes of cherished holiday possessions to add to my already-growing collection.

Don’t get me wrong: to the outside observer, it probably doesn’t look like much. And, for the remainder of the year, the vast majority of lights and garlands and greens are out of sight. Only I know what lurks behind those closet doors.

(And now, you, dear readers.)

It is only once the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers has been packed away in the fridge and the sounds of Christmas carols have invaded the airwaves that my mind turns to the menagerie that lies within.

Usually, it is a two-week ordeal; one for the random figurines and wreaths, accents and novelties - and the other, for the tree, my skinny, sixfoot tall “apartment tree” that comes neatly folded in a box, possibly the most compact of

all my original purchases. Last year, I kept the decorations fairly low-key, favoring instead only the most special of my grandparents’ holiday mementos, a few white lights and my very own Charlie Brown tree. This year… well, let’s just say the process may need to be expanded to three weeks.

The way I see it, as long as all is completed by a week or so before Christmas Eve, there is plenty of time left to enjoy. I’ve never been part of the crowd that feels the need to put up the nativity as the last of the trick-or-treaters is leaving; nor do I rush to pack it all away before the final present has been unwrapped on Christmas morning. To each his or her own.

However you choose to celebrate, whatever the extent of your decorations… as long as you enjoy them, even if no one else has occasion to see them, that is all that matters.

I used to love decorating for the holidays. Each year, I couldn’t wait for the lights to go up in my neighborhood, the house to smell like pine needles and all the cherished knick knacks to find their way to the shelves. That was, until I began accumulating more decorations than my own little apartment could handle.

To say my closets resemble something out of an episode of Hoarders would be overly dramatic; however, the fact that my coat closet no longer accommodates clothing of any kind, but rather, a fairly hefty collection of boxes piled nearly to the ceiling, tends to give me pause. In order to sort through what belongs to Christmas, specifically, it is now necessary to remove nearly all of these containers, briefly peek inside, and then continue to dig.

The Middle Country Central School District’s Centereach High School was recently transformed into a haunted house, where elementary school students from throughout the District enjoyed the District’s annual Trickor-Treat Street event.

High School students and faculty decorated classrooms and dressed in costumes to haunt the halls while elementary school students stopped

armed forces.

There was a musical performance by the Central Islip High School marching band before the ceremony. Jim Altonji, Deacon, St. Joseph Parish in Ronkonkoma, and Tom Brauner, Chaplain, Col. Francis S. Midura Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12144, delivered the invocation.

During the ceremony,

Mayor Dorman asked those in attendance to remember those local residents who served in the military and have since passed on. He also recognized all the local veterans’ groups that were in attendance.

The ceremony ended with village officials joining war veterans in placing a wreath and bouquets of roses in front of the memorial.

The Connetquot Central District is proud to announce that 138 Connetquot High School students have earned Advanced Placement Scholar awards from the College Board. These honorees include both current students and members of the Class of 2017.

Of the 138 total students, 66 received the AP Scholar title for receiving a score

of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams. Thirtynine were given the title of AP Scholar with Honor, as they achieved an average score of at least 3.25 on all of their AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. Additionally, 33 students were awarded the title of AP Scholar of with Distinction, as they achieved an average score of at least 3.5 on all exams

taken with scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

Four members of the Class of 2017, Anthony Mannino, Vincent Pariso, Mit Patel and Abigail Savit, received the high honor of National AP Scholar. This award is given to students who have earned a score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of those exams.

Headed to Washington

On October 27th, the field behind the Grundy Avenue Elementary school in the Sachem Central School District was blanketed by students and staff members in pink supporting a great cause - raising awareness for breast cancer during a student-organized walk.

Leading the charge during the event was student-

coordinator and advocate Bret Auricchio.

Bret, a Grundy thirdgrader, took the lead on this initiative last month to raise money for the American Cancer Society. After realizing the success these walks have had elsewhere in the district, Bret was confident that his school could make a significant

impact. He developed a plan for the event from start to finish, including creating and reading daily announcements and designing and distributing flyers for the students to bring home to their families.

Reflecting on Bret’s actions, Principal Laura Amato remembered a quote from renowned American cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

As a result of student and faculty participation throughout the building, the breast cancer awareness walk raised a total of $1,100.

Each November, a group of Longwood High School students travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in the Princeton Model Congress (PMC). Located directly across from the Capitol building, students are given the opportunity to put what they’ve learned about government and politics into practice.

Over four days, students assume the roles and responsibilities of elected officials and draft legislation to address contemporary issues.

Model Congress is designed

to help the youth of today become the responsible citizens and leaders of tomorrow.

Model Congress provides high school students with the unique opportunity to participate in simulated legislative sessions modeled after the United States Congress.

Students from all over the country become the nation’s elected leaders, discussing foreign and domestic policy questions and drafting legislation to address contemporary issues. Delegates learn to express their own views on

the challenges currently facing our nation.

The majority of students who attended the conference were part of either the House of Representatives or the Senate. Students were assigned in advance to one of the two houses and then also assigned to a committee within that house. They each did significant research and then drafted a bill relevant to their committee that they hoped would improve the United States in some way.

Building Bridges Third-grade students at Connetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School recently took part in the STEM-oriented “Bridging the Gap” activity, working alongside one another to become architects and engineers for the afternoon as they built their own bridges and support structures.

Prior to their building session, the students were introduced to the history of bridges during a presentation by a representative of the Maritime Explorium in

Port Jefferson. During this information session, the students were made aware of the different building materials which go into the creation of a bridge, including steel, stone and concrete.

Additionally, they were able to compare differences in structure between bridges, noticing the inclusion of cables on some and the size of the guard rails on others.

The young engineers then put their newly acquired knowledge to the test in an activity which asked them to use index cards to support the weight

of 25 small toy bears. They worked collaboratively to construct creative support systems, ultimately arriving at unique designs which were successful in holding the weight of the bears.

Additionally, the students constructed “bridges,” with the goal in mind of allowing toy cars to cross successfully, keeping in mind the width of their bridge, the weight of the vehicle and the number of index cards necessary toward building the perfect bridge.

Veteran Visit Shortly before this year’s Veterans Day, students at Nokomis Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District welcomed past Nokomis student, High School North alumnus and recent U.S. Marine boot camp graduate Amadeus GarayReyes for a special visit.

Over the past few months, third-grade students in Laura Clifford and Tara Erb’s class, including Amadeus’ younger brother

Tyler, have been in contact with the new Marine during his time in boot camp, sending messages of encouragement, along with questions about his experience as a beginning military member. Amadeus replied to students with answers to their questions and thanks for their unwavering support.

During the in-class visit, Amadeus thanked the students personally for their kind words and

encouraged them to always try their best in everything they do. He continued the visit by answering more questions for the students and explained what Veterans Day means to him.

Concluding the eventful day, Amadeus was surprised by a visit from his favorite teacher Bill O’Neil, who was his inspiration growing up.

The Middle Island Teachers Association (MITA) is hosting their bi-annual book giveaway on Saturday, December 9th, at Longwood Middle School from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Families and educators can choose up to 15 brand new books, while supplies last. Since December 2015, more than 90,000 free books have

been distributed to the Longwood community.

The event provides educators, church groups, daycare providers, scout leaders, PTA members, civic organizations, and community members with brand new, free books for the children in their lives. There will be a large assortment of brand new books ranging from preschool to high school.

Through the National Book Bank program, First Book connects publishers with local schools and community programs serving children in need. The nation’s only clearinghouse for largescale book donations, the National Book Bank puts over 8 million books each year into the hands of kids.
