Students throughout Merrimac Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District gathered in excitement for a special assembly that showcased items from a time capsule left

by Merrimac students in 1989.

As part of the assembly,

students reviewed a collection of popular items from 30 years ago such as a Merrimac T-shirt, materials from the nurse’s office and classwork that included self-portraits, students’ wishes for the world and learning activities students engaged in at that time.

Later this year, Merrimac alumni will visit the school to view the materials their class left and view the items current students will be placing within the time capsule to be reopened years from now by future Merrimac students.

Sharing Words Of Wisdom

Sachem High School North freshmen recently gathered for a powerful assembly program led by seniors in Jon Chiaramonte’s peer education class, who shared encouraging insight on managing the emotions students encounter in high school.

As part of the assembly, seniors showed photos from their freshman year and spoke of how they have been resilient and grown during their time as Sachem students, overcoming obstacles in their path.

The freshmen spoke also about how they’ve grown since middle school, and resources were identified that are available to TURNING BACK TIME - Merrimac Elementary School students recently opened students in a time of a time capsule left by students 20 years ago. Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need.

They provide food when and where it is needed, sponsor programs that promote self-sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.

So who faces hunger on Long Island?

More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless.

According to the national study, Hunger in America, here are some staggering statistics that will allow you to better understand the need for organizations like Long Island Cares on our island.

There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year.

That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters.

In honor of Veterans Day, which recently passed, below is a heartfelt story of how Long Island Cares helped a female veteran.

Michelle is a 28 year old veteran of service in the Middle East. As she ended her service, she found integration back into civilian life difficult. Through Long Island Cares, Michelle has been able to access food and support services and comes to their Military Appreciation Tuesdays regularly. Visiting their pantry weekly, she receives food for herself and for her puppy, which eases her financial concerns as she navigates applying for SNAP and other benefits.

So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Additionally, food donations are always welcome. Food donations to Long Island Cares is one of the simplest ways you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors. LOCAL ORGANIZATION HELPS CHILDREN IN NEED - Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Future Medical Leader This past June, Sachem High School North junior Solbright Llivicura attended the National Leadership Academies’ prestigious Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Boston. Students selected to attend the conference are recommended by their teacher or guidance counselor for leadership ability, academic achievement and dedication to science and related fields while also holding a GPA of 3.25 or above.

The three-day conference included numerous invigorating medical seminars, which explored topics such as genetics, biomedical engineering, nanotechnology, regenerative medicine, real-time

Magnificent Musicians On Oct. 24, a number of talented student-musicians were inducted into the Ronkonkoma Middle School’s chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society during the sixth annual Tri-M Music Honor Society Induction ceremony held within the school’s Alice R. Schaefer Auditorium.

Twelve talented students were inducted into the program during the course of the evening, as officers recited their pledges and acknowledged their duties as well as their promise

to support the interests of music education. Now there is a total of 32 members.

Acting Principal Joseph Licato, along with Connetquot Central School District Interim Director of Fine Arts and Music George Rockwin, joined adviser Stacy Stollberger in welcoming parents, friends and invited guests to the evening’s events.

Mrs. Stollberger explained the significance and expectations of membership in the Tri-M

Music Honor Society and congratulated the 12 new inductees, along with 20 continuing members.

Concert Choir Achieves High Honors The student-musicians of Connetquot High School’s Concert Choir continue to make vast strides in the musical world and most recently earned several state honors.

Based on their talents, the student-musicians were selected as the only high school ensemble to perform a featured concert at the New York State School Music Association’s Winter Conference in Rochester in December.

Additionally, the choir was asked to sing at the American Choral Directors

Association’s Conference in March 2020.

In order to be selected for these high honors, the Concert Choir was chosen by a blind panel of experts based on recordings of the ensemble from the last three school years.

According to Concert Choir Director Brad Drinkwater, being selected to perform at the NYSSMA winter conference is the highest honor a school band, orchestra, or chorus can receive in New York State.

“I am so proud that the

Concert Choir was chosen for these opportunities to represent our school and share our music with a wider audience,” said Mr. Drinkwater.

“It is a testament to the quality of instruction these students have received from my outstanding colleagues starting in kindergarten in the Connetquot School District and proof of what our community already knew – that our children are doing extraordinary things as part of our school music program.”

Board Of Education Recognized During the Oct. 23 meeting of the Sachem Central School District Board of Education, the nine esteemed members of the board were recognized for their extraordinary efforts as representatives for Sachem students, staff and community members.

Numerous district organizations, including the Sachem Administrators Association, Sachem Classroom Teachers

Association, Sachem Clerical Association, Sachem Nurses Association, Sachem Supervisors Association, and the Sachem custodial, maintenance, facilities and security unions all presented the board with tokens of appreciation or made donations in their name for their continuous outstanding contributions to the Sachem Central School District and

community.

Among others, a donation was made to the DezyStrong Foundation, a foundation established

by Matthew DiStefano, a Sachem High School North teacher currently battling cancer.

The organization’s mission is to individuals with cancer access to experiences that directly instill mental wellbeing.

Artist Frank J. Loehr Featured Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to announce that the works of Ronkonkoma artist Frank J. Loehr will be on view at Apple Bank, 91 Route 111, Smithtown, through January 11, 2020. The exhibition, part of STAC’s Outreach Gallery Program, can be viewed during regular bank hours.

Primarily a self-taught artist, Frank has studied the work of other artists, painting and sketching countless pictures. “While I respect forms of abstract

art, representational art is my preference. My appreciation of classical art has inspired me to copy old masters such as Vermeer, Rembrandt, Greuze and Vouet. These efforts have helped a great deal in my understanding of painting and applying it to my current work. I paint in oils on canvas or panel.

My goals are to achieve realistic effects in portrait, landscape or still life and for the painting to engage the viewer.”

Frank, born in Brooklyn

and raised on Long Island, was educated at SUNY Farmingdale, N.Y. After serving as a U.S. Army Paratrooper in the 2 /509th Airborne Infantry, he pursued a career in the Aerospace industry for Grumman Aircraft and later Northrop Grumman.

Working and raising a family did not leave much time for art. Frank, now retired has more time for art and paints for fun and relaxation. His current focus is on portrait and figurative work, but also

enjoys landscape and plein air painting. He has worked in all mediums, but oil paint is his favorite and he prefers realism over all other styles.

Frank has exhibited in juried and group shows across long Island.

A recent visit to LIU Post created real-world business management experience for Sachem High School East business students and students who work at the school store, The Arrow Zone.

During the visit, students met with Dr. Robert Valli, dean of the

School of Business at LIU Post, and representatives from the LIU school store management team to share business skills and techniques. Among the topics covered were accounting, fiscal practices, inventory control and pricing strategies.

The partnership created

a plethora of learning opportunities for students at both schools and will continue in the future as the student groups share best practices for how to mitigate operational challenges.
