Pumpkin Fest A Success

O

n October 25th, the Village of Islandia welcomed over 600 local residents and children to the 10th Annual Pumpkin Fest on the grounds of Islandia Village Hall. Throughout the event, children decorated pumpkins and took part in a Halloween Costume Parade & Contest.

They also joined their families as they went on hayrides and walked through a chilling Haunted Castle that kept everyone on their toes. Each resident left with a pumpkin.

The perfect dress. Is there even such a thing?

Perhaps. It’s just that, when pressed for time, the search becomes seemingly more futile by the day. Store after store, scanning the racks for something – anything – that stands out and screams you...

I suppose I’m atypical in the sense that I’m part of a rare breed of girl that doesn’t enjoy shopping; that is, not when I need something specific, anyway. Send me on a random shopping spree with all the time in the world, and I have no problem dropping several hundred dollars in a matter of hours. But give me an occasion, a short window of time to find something appropriate and,

can motivate myself to venture out.

Couple that with my deep aversion to being forced to navigate an entire mall, that endless, sprawling layout of department stores and dress shops, and my options become increasingly limited. More often than not, I find myself on the complete opposite side from where I need to be, standing in front of one of the gigantic maps, vainly trying to ascertain the quickest route to my destination.

Once in the store, there’s the matter of locating which floor the department you’re seeking is on, which, oddly enough, some employees don’t even seem to have a handle on. So

each level, I can then get down to the purpose of my mission – actually pinpointing something I like, finding it in my size and then, assuming steps 1 & 2 go as planned, crossing my fingers that said “perfect” dress is somewhat affordable.

Sound simple? Let’s just say my last dress shopping mission, which I began precisely two weeks before the date I needed it, has so far encompassed two different malls, several department stores and random dress shops and resulted in my purchasing two different selections, neither of which I am completely sold on.

Harvest Season More than 20 students from Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School recently harvested over 200,000 clams, which the students had seeded in rafts four months ago at Long Beach in Smithtown.

As part of the school’s Mariculture Program,

Peter Cerreta was an Army pilot who guided his C46 transport plane from Georgia to China over the Himalayas in WWII. He never questioned his duty and completed many dangerous missions. He returned to college after the war and earned his degree as an aeronautical engineer. He continued serving our country in Washington DC, working at NASA, and retired after 40 years in 1982.

Each year on Veteran’s Day our communities pay special tribute to those who experiences inspiring. The Bristal salutes the many men and women among our ranks who dedicated themselves to the cause of freedom. Our thanks should be felt and heard, especially at this time of year.

AFTER SCHOOL VISIT - Recently, Councilman Kevin LaValle (right) visited Dawnwood Middle School to speak with students in the After School Club. He discussed many topics with the group, including Single Stream Recycling, the Animal Shelter, Holtsville Ecology Site and the new Selden Dog Park, a project spearheaded by the Councilman. He also let the students know about other happenings around the Town of Brookhaven. The Councilman answered questions from the students and took suggestions from the club.

PASTORAL APPRECIATION - On October 26th, Supervisor Ed Romaine presented a proclamation to Bishop Ralph L. Jefferson during his 50th Pastoral Appreciation Celebration. Bishop Jefferson, who was born in Southampton, joined the United States Marine Corps after high school and served his country overseas in the Korean War. He was wounded in action and earned nine ribbons, two Battle Stars, a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. In July 1964, Bishop Jefferson started his church in a 12 seat taxi stand and later established churches in Port Jefferson, Selden, Centereach and Bellport.

The inn was also used as a temperance house in the mid-1800s. By 1890, all commercial use ceased and it became solely a private residence. On April 15, 1986, the Brookhaven Town Board designated the house as an official town landmark, citing it as one of the town’s most historic structures. It was declared a New York State landmark in 2000 and a National Landmark in 2001.

After two years of work, in September 2012 restoration of the Davis House exterior was completed. It included roof replacement; exterior

restoration; masonry work; engineering services associated with the completion of the interior structural timber restoration; reconstruction of a new timber framed front porch, and completion of the exterior facade. Once all interior renovations are completed, the Davis House will serve as a multiuse community center for local organizations.

PLAY FOR THE CURE - Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School Ladies Field Hockey team recently hosted league rival, West Babylon for the 2014 Play 4 The Cure, breast cancer awareness game. Both the varsity and junior varsity teams wore pink jerseys, and presented pink roses to players on the opposing team, thanking them for participating in Play 4 The Cure event. On October 25th, the Long Island Chapter of the National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century historic recognition of the Davis House in Coram was celebrated.

The Davis House was built in the 1750s, and for over 250 years it was owned by direct male descendents of Foulk Davis who arrived in Southampton in 1642. According to local historian Davis Erhardt, the original owner of the house was probably Elijah Davis (1727-1802) who kept a tavern-inn.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent.

Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease.

Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease.

That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Prof. Dan Davis, kneelingback to camera, to solve a local mystery: what caused a number of rimmed depressions in the ground throughout the Rocky Point Natural Resources Management Area that includes nearly 6,000 acres of pine-oak forest and open lands.

The students are using

ground penetrating radar to determine the structure of the underlying surface and formulate hypotheses about the possible causes of the not-too-noticeable depressions. The students also assisted in conducting resistivity studies that will be used in conjunction with the results of ground penetrating radar.

Once they are completed they are put on display for all the other staff and
