On Tuesday, October 2nd, the Suffolk County Legislature voted to approve Procedural Motion 13, which authorizes the County Division of Real Property to make an offer to purchase four parcels of land off of Whiskey Road in Middle Island owned

by Stone Point Group, LLC, for open space acquisition.

Legislator Anker moved forward the acquisition process in an effort to preserve this environmentally sensitive property. The preservation efforts are supported by local community members, environmental groups, and the Middle Island Civic Association. The parcels will be purchased in partnership with the Town of Brookhaven with the County contributing 70% of the purchase price and the Town contributing 30%.

Emotional Resilience “Don’t promise when you’re happy, don’t reply when you’re angry, and don’t decide when you’re sad.” - Ziad K. Abdelnour What does it mean to be resilient? For some, it’s the idea of bouncing back quickly after adversity. For others, it is the ability to remain stoic. Some see it as simply ones’ ability to face another day.

My own definition may be counter-intuitive to some, but it is the courage to feel negative emotions, allowing the discomfort to effect you, grabbing the kernels of wisdom a negative experience brings, and then embarking upon the healing process and honoring whatever form it takes.

I think it is a gross human misconception that to cry, to punch a pillow, to feel hopeless, to declare that the world is coming to an end, or any other things you need to do in the midst of grief or profound disappointment, somehow makes you not emotionally resilient.

People have always observed me to be great at “bouncing back.”

What they don’t see is that I took the time I needed to be a complete mess! Yes, I said it. I take the time I need to honor the negative emotions, to give them their chance to have a field day. Then I dust myself off and move forward, feeling cleansed and renewed.

It’s all part of the process. It’s a myth that strong people don’t cry. Can we put that one to bed right now, please? Those heavier, denser emotions are part of the learning experience, and they are necessary. With that being said, so is stacking the deck in your favor toward healing.

Below is my cheat sheet for making it through tough, upsetting or scary times: Take a moment to STOP, look around and assess your immediate surroundings. Ask yourself if you are in any danger right in that moment. Chances are, the answer is no. Next, focus on 5 things you see around you.

Then focus on 3 things you can feel around you (tactile). Third, focus on one thing you can smell.

Fourth, focus on one thing you can hear.

Play classical or jazz music. I find that both of these genres of music have a soothing effect on the emotional part of the brain.

Picture yourself as a character in a movie. The people around you are the supporting players.

Think of the crisis before you as the script (the plot), and you as delivering the ultimate Oscarworthy performance. After all, life is a grand illusion anyway, and it is a safe bet to assume that you have starred in many other dramas, as well as some great comedies, in your lifetime.

Go do something you enjoy.

No matter how despondent you may feel, tell yourself you are going to take a short break from being “you,” and simply go do something enjoyable. Take a run, ride a bike, eat an ice cream cone, watch a funny movie, bake cookies, call an old friend, do something romantic with a significant other. I promise you, your problems can wait an hour.

Lastly, when you do bounce back, pay it forward and use that newfound wisdom to help someone else.

Celebrating the Fall Season

Election Day Content Provided By: Suffolk County League Of Women Voters November 6th is Election Day. New Yorkers have an abysmal record of turning out to vote. In the 2016 presidential election, New York ranked 41 out of the 50 states for lowest turnout. In 2014, which was an off year election, similar to this year, New York ranked 49/50, with only one state having lower turnout than us. What will happen this year in New York?

What will happen in Suffolk County? Will you be making your choice known or abdicating your power to others?

This year we have seen increased polarization and heightened civil discourse throughout the country, in our state and even in our county.

Although all the noise may appear to indicate that most voters are paying attention and interested in politics, this simply may not be the case. Yes, certainly there are more people speaking out. Students in high schools and colleges appear engaged and energized, holding marches and their own voter registration drives. Women as a group are more visible, running for public offices as well as organizing voter registration and voter turnout initiatives.

In celebration of the fall season and Halloween, students at Cherokee Street Elementary School are currently sharpening their musical skills with assistance from music teacher Lauren Isleman by taking part in a fun pumpkin-themed activity.

Sitting in a circle, the students passed along a

stuffed pumpkin around to one another while practicing keeping a proper beat to the melody of the song “Pass the Pumpkin,” which featured Halloweenthemed lyrics and is set in a minor key.

Once the pumpkin landed on a student, they were asked to leave the circle and interact with a

number of instruments which would assist with increasing the musical dynamic of the song. The instruments included were xylophones, metallophones, gongs and rain sticks, which the students highly enjoyed playing alongside their classmates.

We have also seen that voter turnout in the primaries this year was much higher than in the 2014 primary. However, in the 2014 general election, only 28 % of new Yorkers voted. How many of the 72% who did not vote, will this year? We hear from those who are engaged, but what about the silent majority? How many are turned off to politics because of the rhetoric? How many feel that there is no way they can make a difference so why bother? How many have become so mistrustful of what they hear and read, that they stop trying to find out about the candidates, their positions, and decide not to vote?

There are many places where voters can go to be informed, hear from candidates themselves, learn about issues from non-partisan organizations. There are voter guides both paper and online. One example is the LWVNY guide, VotingNewYork.org, which will not only let each voter know candidates on their ballot, but also candidate bios, endorsements, and where they stand on important issues. In addition, it will let readers know their poll site and if desired, send a reminder to vote. Many community organizations are hosting candidate debates as well as some media channels. Voters should listen to what the candidates have to say as well as to questions they avoid. If they have been in public office before what they have done can be compared to what they promise they will do. If they would be new to elected office, learn more about their positions and their abilities to communicate with people of all backgrounds and opinions.

On November 6th, each of us will be voting for our member of the House of Representatives and also one US Senator from New York.

We will also be voting for NY Governor, NY Lieutenant Governor, NY Comptroller and NY Attorney General, as well as our NY State Senator and NY State Assembly member. In addition, the Suffolk County Comptroller and Suffolk County Clerk are also on the ballot.

There are also some special elections in several of our towns.

Therefore, this election is important for all levels of our government.

This outcome will affect everyone, those who vote and those who do not. Not voting is not protesting what is going on. It is giving up. It is relinquishing power and abdicating it to others.

Longwood High School sophomore Esmeralda Acevedo-Velasquez took first place honors in the New York State Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) held at Suffolk County Community College. More than 100 participants competed in the program, which promotes mathematics,

communication skills, leadership, computer applications, and career readiness for students in grades 7-12.

Using batteries, solar panels, wood, alcohol, and a programming tool, her project, How Swarm Robots Function, proved that multiple robots are more beneficial in

detecting chemicals by 35 percent.

The Science and Technology Entry Program develops the abilities and skills of students to prepare them for entry in careers in math, science, technology, and the licensed professions.

Ronkonkoma Middle School recently welcomed family, friends and distinguished guests to the sixth annual Tri-M Music Honor Society induction ceremony, celebrating the accomplishments of a number of talented student-musicians.

Tri-M Music Honor Society adviser Stacy Stollberger explained the significance and expectations of membership in the Tri-M Honor Society before congratulating the new inductees, along with 28 continuing members on their accomplishments.

Former Tri-M Music Honor Society adviser Dr. Frank Saladino went on to explain that the organization promotes student leadership, and its RMS members are the future leaders in the music department, their school and community. Acting RMS Principal Joseph Licato was also on hand to congratulate the students and their proud family members.

Youth Motivational Speaker Nationally recognized youth and motivational speaker Rohan Murphy was welcomed to Connetquot High School on October 12th for the assembly, “Write Your Life in Pencil, Not Pen!” The presentation focused on what Mr. Murphy refers to as “The Four P’s’” - purpose, pride, passion and perspective, along with the importance of inclusivity, and believing in oneself.

Mr. Murphy, a graduate of East Islip High School,

has spoken at school assemblies in more than 40 states. Having lost his legs at birth, he showed his determination and spirit at a young age as he began wrestling in his freshman year of high school. After a successful high school wrestling career, he went on to wrestle at Penn State University.

His inspirational speeches have been featured in numerous publications, including Sports Illustrated.
