Time Of The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And just like that, the holiday season is upon us. It seems like just last week we were soaking up the last few rays of sun at the beach, our toes in the sand, the waves crashing ashore… and now we’re busy digging out boots and scarves and stocking up on all things pumpkin spice. Such is the circle of life, the cycle of seasons and the wonder of Mother Nature.

Speaking of, “sources” claim this winter will be colder than normal, with

record snowfall yet again.

Shocking. Really, do we need to start obsessing about the first flake from now? It is what it is; it will be what it will be – the end.

Deal with it. Or don’t, and hibernate until March. The mass hysteria is beyond maddening, especially since most meteorologists can’t seem to predict the next day’s forecast, let alone an entire season’s worth. Just sayin’.

In the meantime, can we all just enjoy the cool, crisp air of Autumn? Play in the leaves, pick pumpkins and apples, check out a haunted

house or corn maze, create a unique Halloween costume, start planning your Thanksgiving menu ... Save the shovels for another day.

For now, anyway.

And as for those Christmas gift lists ... relax.

There’s something about shopping for the holidays during the actual season, don’t you think? Those who are already finished are missing out on the true spirit in their rush to cross tasks off the to-do list.

It’s not a race. It’s about putting some thought into it and enjoying the experience.

The Connetquot Public Library hosts the Family History Roundtable Series, a series of programs designed to help navigate your genealogical expedition through time and discover the moving narratives of those who came before you.

On Wednesday evening, September 17th, the Connetquot Public Library hosted a genealogical program, “How to Research the Municipal Archives in New York City.” Carol Proven, who has taught genealogy classes at St. Joseph’s College, shared her extensive knowledge of research and record gathering.

Through an informative slide show presentation and discussion, Proven listed the vast collection of records housed in this lower Manhattan location.

Handouts detailed the years of vital records from all five boroughs,

census information, court records, voter registration, coroner’s records and much more.

The lively discussion prompted an exchange of ideas amongst the audience and delved further into the genealogical experience.

Proven offered a case study which demonstrated the steps one may take when reaching an impasse during research.

She detailed relevant websites and explained the process of obtaining records through the Municipal Archives. A brief history of Ellis Island, the gateway

to 20th century migration, was explored and provided a glimpse to the site where many of our ancestors first set foot on American soil.

The Connetquot Public Library offers a Genealogy Blog, rich with information on research, ideas, websites and portals to help solve your ancestral mysteries.

District Awarded Grant

Longwood Central School District is pleased to announce that they have been chosen to receive a School Climate Transformation Grant sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education.

Longwood is the only district on Long Island to have been selected and is one of only 71 school districts in 23 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The $1.7 million, five-year allocation is one of several federal grant programs designed to unify and address the full range of students’ social, emotional and behavioral needs.

Working in conjunction with the Longwood Board

of Education’s goals and objectives set for the 2014-2015 school year, the grant will support and strengthen districtwide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program services, staff training in proactive behavior management techniques, cultural sensitivity training, systems management and school climate enhancements.

Ridge Elementary School Social Worker Stephanie Columbia and Charles E. Walters Elementary School Psychologist Dr. Katherine Drum crafted the grant to support and expand current positive behavior intervention systems within the district addressing

Longwood’s diverse needs both within each building and the community as a whole. In keeping with the Longwood spirit of community unity, the grant will unite the seven buildings with a framework for creating a positive and safe environment for learning.

“Based on The Leader In Me, which is a program centered on Steven Covey’s habits of highly effective people, PBIS teaches children to believe in themselves,” said Assistant Superintendent for Student and Community Services Debra Winter. “The Leader In Me is an evidencedbased program designed to teach our students what it takes to be leaders in their individual lives, and also provides them with the necessary skills to grow to be responsible lifetime learning leaders who are prepared with 21st century competencies essential for student success.”

Golden Gathering

Seniors who attended the Golden Gathering, hosted

by Senator Lee Zeldin at St. Joseph’s College, had the opportunity to receive manicures and blood pressure screenings compliments of Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Adult Education students who are studying for careers in cosmetology and Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN).

The Annual Golden Gathering allows seniors to meet in one location, have access to a variety of information, programs, and services such as those provided by the ESBOCES students.

Adult Nursing Teacher Catherine McLaughlin said, “My students are participating in this event because I want them to learn the dynamics of hypertension. They can speak to the elderly

about how to control hypertension by modifying diets and lifestyles.

Students are connecting with representatives from other agencies and learning about potential services for patients, job opportunities, outreach programs, and how they can be a dynamic part of the health community on Long Island.”

Christina Piazza, a student in the LPN Program, said, “Students from my class volunteered to come to the Golden Gathering and provide blood pressure screenings and educate the elderly because blood pressure issues are prominent in the elderly community and people don’t realize the impact it has on every other body system.” Christina and her classmates gathered information from vendors such as the

Family Service League and Brookhaven Memorial Hospital to take back and incorporate into the LPN Program.”

Cosmetology students had a continuous flow of seniors to their table.

Volunteering at an event like the Golden Gathering provides community service hours to the adult education students and gives them an opportunity to practice their practical and soft skills. Teacher Dorothea LoBiondo said, “My students volunteer their time and skill at a variety of places across Long Island, from spa nights, to doing hair and nails for school district theatre productions. The Golden Gathering event provides an intergenerational experience that benefits the seniors and the students.”
